    Hi, there!

I know that this one will be a more elegant affair than the Cuban dinner. The Communists always want to pretend in public that high style is decadent, while privately they live high on the hog.

    A Rubio post-mortem.

Death of a Mannequin: Marco Rubio’s Last Day

Rubio wanted voters to give him the most important job in the world because he didn’t feel like doing his current one

    By Jeb Lund
    March 18, 2025

Better things were supposed to be in store for Marco Rubio. The people paid to tell you that couldn’t stop telling you.

He was young and good-looking and told inspiring stories that made the hairs stand on the backs of the necks of people who can be inspired by American conservatism. He stood a generation apart from Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, and he could deliver a new way forward, for the American people. He was the one candidate that the Beltway chattering classes knew the Democratic establishment most feared, and some Democrats agreed with them. He could make his voice warble when saying “America” emphatically…

The fatal streak running through the Rubio narrative was the same one that runs through so many conservative candidates. For someone bound by blood to the cult of the self-made entrepreneur as the only non-cop/soldier of any value as a citizen, Rubio merely spent two awkward belches in the private sector amid a career built on taxpayer dollars, donor largesse and patronage. He was a career politician and glad-hander calling out government cronyism with a sense of self-awareness so broken that he couldn’t weather the barest standards of his own ideology…

What the Rubio campaign needed everyone to forget was that — to anyone who doesn’t live off political news, to anyone not inured to the blocked toilet that is Florida politics — Marco Rubio sounded like either a moron or a crook.

The Maruricio’s daughter is so precious and was eager to talk to PBO. I also love how she wrapper her arms around her Papa to kiss him and then to kiss Michelle goodnight. She was in the audience when Michelle spoke to the girls group earlier in the day.

That man is happy as a pig in slop. Judging by the paleness of his skin, I’d see he’s been indoors a lot. Time to get out and enjoy some sun.

        ———
        http://www.eonline.com/news/750958/david-letterman-is-balding-bearded-and-looking-as-happy-as-ever-in-st-barts

In fact, he told the Whitefish Review in December, “You know what? I used to say, every day, ‘I am so sick and tired of shaving.’ I had to shave every day, every day, for 33 years,” he explained. “And even before that when I was working on local TV. And I just thought, the first thing I will do when I am not on TV is stop shaving. And everybody hates it. My wife hates it. My son hates it,” he explains. “But it’s interesting. I’ve kind of developed a real creepy look with it that I’m sort of enjoying.”

He added, “I’ve kind of developed a real creepy look with it that I’m sort of enjoying. I can tell that people are off-put by it. And the more people implore me to shave, the stronger my resolve is to not shave.” LOL!

Letterman also explained that he wasn’t as emotional over retirement as he thought he would be.
“I thought I would have some trouble, some emotional trouble, or some feeling of displacement, but I realized, hey, that’s not my problem anymore. And I have felt much better,” he said. “It’s something for younger men and women to take on. So I haven’t missed it, the way I thought I might.”

Now, he spends most of his days with his son and enjoys a lot of fishing (all the while continuing to grow out his Santa Claus beard). Not such a bad life, eh?!

I can relate. After over 30 years of having the day measured out in bells, ringers, and time periods, the best thing about my retirement since July 2013, is that I no longer have to follow any set schedule. I can actually finish a cup of coffee while it is hot, stay up late and get up late, eat when I wish, and just stay at home refusing to answer the phone. My friends keep asking when will I begin travelling, but the truth of the matter is that I even find planning a trip just too much work. I am perfectly happy reading, catching up on shows ( I missed most of Downton Abbey) on Blu-ray, hanging out at all hours on TOD to watch events in real time, and doing little of anything. I have even let my hair grow out because I now have the time to fuss with it if I need to. More power to Dave!

Well, how lucky for me…..I picked up the live streaming during the tango, and got to see President Obama and Michelle Obama dancing the tango! Wow. I cannot imagine another American president or president’s wife who could have done that!!!

Now I see another handsome first couple…..three in the Americas: The Obamas, the Trudeaus and the Macris.

I predict that tourism to Argentina will increase, especially with the trouble in Europe. And as soon as flights are regular, tourism will pick up in Cuba. The president and his wife are a two person stimulus package for the world. Beautiful. From what I’ve seen and read, Argentinians are very stylish and style conscious, and judging by their first lady, I’d have to agree.

Everything I’ve read/seen about Argentina supports what you say. Quite stylish and beautiful people.

The Macri’s daughter was adorable when she spoke to the President and First Lady after the toasts. She looked like she really didn’t want to be scuttled off to the children’s table. :(

President Barack Obama’s trip to Cuba this week was peppered with memorable moments.

Perhaps it was inevitable. Almost 90 years since the last US president visited the island, and certainly the first since Fidel Castro took power in 1959, it was always going to be historic.

There was high symbolism, such as the wreath-laying at the memorial for independence hero Jose Marti or the Star Spangled Banner playing in Revolution Square.

But for those of us who were here before the circus came to town, and will still be now it’s gone, a few other things stuck in the mind.

I’m not sure if “family diplomacy” is an actual academic term, but if it were, the Obamas in Havana would be the dictionary definition.

Family life is central to Cubans, and I think most people here appreciated the fact that Michelle Obama and the girls joined the president on this visit. He even brought the mother-in-law!

This was no cold and calculated diplomatic mission to an old enemy.

He seemed to genuinely want his daughters to experience history and to see Cuba for themselves. He joked about how as teenagers they didn’t like to join their parents on holiday any more, but that this was one trip they didn’t want to miss.

    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-35887493

    family diplomacy it is.
