Alabamaâs âfamily valuesâ governor mired in sex scandal
03/24/16 08:00 AMâUPDATED 03/24/16 08:25 AM
By Steve Benen
While running for governor in 2010, Alabamaâs Robert Bentley emphasized his âfamily valuesâ credentials. The Republican candidate not only ran ads featuring his wife and family, but Bentley also said he believes so strongly in the sanctity of traditional marriage that as far as heâs concerned, when same-sex couples wed, their marriages should be dismissed as âsocial experiments.â
Given what we learned yesterday, the GOP governor probably shouldnât have made his family such a centerpiece of his platform.
Alabamaâs Sunday school-teaching governor was accused by his former top cop on Wednesday of breaking the Seventh Commandment â thou shalt not commit adultery.
Spencer Collier claims he was fired from his post as head of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on Tuesday because he refused to cover up Gov. Robert Bentleyâs alleged affair with top political adviser Rebekah Caldwell Mason.
Watch the top video — they set it up for replay. Instead of simultaneous translation, each President is stopping after a few sentences so the translators can translate. Itâs much better than the way theyâve done previous ones. You can hear what both Presidents are saying in English.
THE RACHEL MADDOW SHOW 3/23/16
‘Family valuesâ governor mired in sex scandal
Rachel Maddow reports on the increasing pressure and scrutiny on Alabama Governor Robert Bentley as evidence of an affair with his senior political adviser has become more explicit.
Local reporter on Rachel Maddow said the guyâs career is done. Its not just the affair itself, heâs about to be up on charges. Thereâs an investigation going on about how the aide (mistress) was paid - where her salary came from - and whether or not Gov misappropriated govt funds
I hope so Dudette. I hope he gets a jail cell next to Don Sieglmam whom he jailed for winning Govenor then flipped the votes. This entire state legislature needs to be investigated.
SW, Iâm thrilled to see these Pa numbers. The Hillary people have been all over PA for months-from the smallest counties to the largest urban areas. Theyâre leaving nothing to chance in getting out the vote. Meantime, I hear endless whining from Bernie people and arguments about his still having a ‘pathâ to the nomination.
hello JackieG…i went to my first Hillary home meeting last night….
they had a good turn out…hosted by a PA Senator…that was surprising….what was also surprising is that they do not have a Philadelphia office yet…i wonder why…
the organizer seemed to be a bit inexperienced..but.i felt that there were a lot of long time DEMs in the room…like me…folks who are ready to get the show on the road…
this meeting was out in Montgomery County…a Philly suburb…
I see few — if any *primary (not caucus)* situations where Bernie will have enough of a gap to make a difference to the delegate count. His hopes seem to lie with the super delegates, and even there, I donât see where he can pull out a win. I just hope his supporters donât get ugly with what is sure to be harassment of the super delegates.
Federal Court Official: Jared Loughner lawsuit a hoax
PHOENIX - A lawsuit filed in federal court in the U.S District of Arizona purportedly from killer Jared Loughner accusing his victim, former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords of causing him “emotion [sic] and psychological distress” is a hoax according to a federal court official.
Loughner, 27, is serving seven consecutive life sentences in the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Rochester, Minnesota for killing six people including Federal Judge John Roll, 8-year old Christina Taylor Green and wounding 13 others on January 8, 2025 outside a Safeway in Tucson during Congresswoman Gabby Giffords “Congress on Your Corner” event. The attempted assassination on Giffords was life-altering, forcing her to resign on January 25, 2025 because of a severe brain injury.
Loughner descended into mental illness in his teens. In 2011 he was declared mentally incompetent to stand trial and could be forcibly medicated.
The envelope was postmarked on March 15th from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and received on March 18th by the Clerk of the Court for the United States District Court in Arizona. The sender is supposedly Jared Lee Loughner whoâs incarcerated in a federal medical center in Rochester, Minnesota. But a federal court official confirmed to 12 News the lawsuit is actually from another mentally disturbed prisoner in Philadelphia who is impersonating Loughner. And this may not be the first time heâs done it…
Good to know that itâs not from Loughner and is a hoax. (At least the court considers it a hoax although someone actually did try to file it.) But just the idea of anyone filing a lawsuit like that is against Gabby Giffords is crazy.

Inside Obamaâs White House Episode 3 of 4 - Airing on BBC Two â Tuesday, March 29th 9:00 PM
Episode three explores how Barack Obama set out to end George Bushâs wars in the Middle East and reset relations with the rest of the world. In Cairo he speaks to the Arab world, calling democracy a human right. Two years later when protest erupts in Tahrir Square, the president is torn between secretary of state Hillary Clinton and defense secretary Robert Gates, who believe Egyptâs President Hosni Mubarak provides regional stability, and his young advisors, who are in tune with the promise of the Arab Spring. Before long, a similar test arises in Libya, Hillary Clinton changes her position to back military intervention and Obama agrees to join allies in airstrikes against Colonel Gaddafi.
In Syria, when shocking evidence shows the use of chemical weapons, Obama decides to bomb. But when the British Parliament votes against intervention, he decides he needs the backing of a reluctant Congress. Foreign secretary William Hague explains why the British parliament voted against intervention in 2013 and President Obama explains why he then decided to seek the backing of Congress.
This episode also explores how Obama scored a big win when he negotiated a secret deal to end the nuclear threat from Iran - behind the backs of his closest allies. Secretary of state John Kerry tells how he worked through the night, with President Obama on the phone, to secure the outlines of the deal.
Can you imagine any one of muddled-minded fools currently running for President having the intelligence to navigate a more treacherous terrain that is the Middle East?
They are serious enough to have a decent background about what is going on. How do you make good decisions without a decent, factual basis to start.
Relying on your brain as guidance for foreign policy rather than factual intelligence is not going to keep us safe. Generating an atmosphere of fear and over-reacting is not going to keep us safe. Angering our allies and potential allies and thinking war and torture is the answer to everything is not going to keep us safe.
Iâm so grateful for all this realistic documentation of how tough itâs been. Makes my heart hurt just thinking about it. AND it reminds me how crucial, how very essential, Chips, NW, TOD and all of you are. Weâd be lost without each other.
Thank you so much for this sw, I love watching these and send the links off to lots of friends, too.
A huge bundle of thanks to NW, Chips, Dudette, etc, for all the wonderful photos, music, videos, etc. I am running so far behind these days as I keep rewatching the incredible events that have occurred these past few days in Cuba and Argentina. POTUS and FLOTUS are totally rocking Latin America. So many great talks given by both. Iâm just in heaven!
Have a fabulous Thursday everyone. Now back to watching the tango again :-)
THIS is MUST SEE for Bernie Sanders people who have NO IDEA.
We here all know exactly how difficult every day was trying to pass ACA. Some days were excruciating. It was a very long, very difficult, very frustrating, very hard slog and I will never forget it. Thatâs why this whole Sanders ploy to change healthcare is such a JOKE. And it infuriates me. GRRRRR!!
This documentary takes an unflinching look at the absolute COURAGE and determination of President Obama. In my book, he is and always be a HERO.
I mean really, who sits with Raul Castro at a baseball game one day, and dances the Tango until the wee hours of the morning in Argentina the next? You canât write this as a plot to a movie, nobody would believe you.
Morning! Good news! You all know about the voting fiasco that we had here in Maricopa Cty on Tuesday…60 polling places for a county with 4 MILLION people! Well, we now can say that we have a Dem. lawyer and US Marine veteran stepping up to run for that office!!! YAY!!! What a horrible cluster THAT was! We vote by mail at our house, but my daughterâs ballot signature was questioned and sent back…what a mess! Glad that heâs stepping up to do this….the current recorder is a 90year old Republican.. (poetic license on the age…you get the drift)
Good morning, TOD! I havenât been on this site in a while even though I always check twitter feed for updates. Iâm SO enjoying this final year watching our President and First Family continue to light up every space they visit. I joked with someone recently that PBO should do a “farewell tour” a la Kobe Bryant and let everyone show their love in different cities around the country.
Georgia legislature just passed the same heinous mess. Governor is reportedly “leaning” toward a veto as so many businesses are threatening to leave the state if he signs it, including big players in the movie industry - Disney and Marvel.
Just read in L.A. Times GA Gov has until May 3rd to veto the bill. Disney will stop filming there if it becomes law. GA gets billions in revenue i read. Money talks but anti-gay rules the south. All these laws will be challenged and ruled unconstitional….SCOTUS matters and the makeup of the court can be changed….VOTE DEM!
Not to mention the NFL threatening to exclude GA in the bid for the Super Bowl…while the new Falconâs stadium is being built…not to mention the Braves building their new stadium in Cobb Co. Too much to lose…Deal probably wonât want to risk the revenue loss that will result, though I bet he waits until the last minute to veto it.
Realized that this comment was as clear as mud, so clarifying…
A couple of months ago lots of media coverage about a “shooter” at Balboa Naval Hospital (which Iâm very familiar with — growing up our familyâs medical care took place there [father was “lifer” which meant military benefits for dependents after his honorable discharge from the Navy]).
This report (from a couple months ago) was a false alarm (and about this time of morning- itâs 8:30am here) — no one had a gun, was a nervous Nellie who thought they “saw” something.
Waaay behind as usual… is this week Easter break for you (or was it last week)?
@FranklinFoer (former New Republic editor, not sure what heâs up to now after Chris Hughes tanked TNR) makes a compelling case (worth the read, IMHO):
"Or as he elegantly summed up his view to @NYMag in the early â90s, 'Women, you have to treat them like shit.'" https://t.co/ahVmhseBSr
morning Arapaho:) We had break last week…should have been THIS week…woke up to a flat tire just as I was about to go to work….now waiting for AAA:) Trump is a racist, bully punk. I hope that he is not only in the crapper politically, but I hope his brand is tarnished forever. Bad, selfish judgement call…heâs disgusting and I canât wait until I donât have to talk about him or hear his name in polite conversation ever again.
Donât understand public school schedules these day — in my day… Easter break happened between Palm and Easter Sunday — seems kind of disruptive to happen before Palm Sunday, but hope you had a relaxing time, enjoying the weather before Phoenix becomes an oven. :(
Every school in Milwaukee when I was a kid: We got Good Friday off and the following week. Why is it now so complicated? And so hard for working parents, juggling schedules.
Guess I can spill it now — my niece just spent yesterday on her first stint as a movie extra. If the scene doesnât get cut, when the Baywatch movie comes out, youâll see her sitting in a diner laughing with guy as they sat at a table next to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnsonâs table! Squeeee! :-D
A chatbot developed by Microsoft has gone rogue on Twitter, swearing and making racist remarks and inflammatory political statements.
The experimental AI, which learns from conversations, was designed to interact with 18-24-year-olds.
Just 24 hours after artificial intelligence Tay was unleashed, Microsoft appeared to be editing some of its more inflammatory comments.
The software firm said it was “making some adjustments”.
“The AI chatbot Tay is a machine learning project, designed for human engagement. As it learns, some of its responses are inappropriate and indicative of the types of interactions some people are having with it. Weâre making some adjustments to Tay,” the firm said in a statement.
http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-35890188
right, as if real life racists on twitter werenât enough.
File under “what were they thinking?” And how did they test this before rolling out?
‘Tay is designed to engage and entertain people where they connect with each other online through casual and playful conversation,â Microsoft said.
‘The more you chat with Tay the smarter she gets, so the experience can be more personalised for you.â
This has led to some unfortunate consequences with Tay being “taught” to tweet like a Nazi sympathiser, racist and supporter of genocide, among other things.”
Makes me wonder if Microsoft engineers have never read Isaac Asimov (who wrote dozens of “robot” books) — 1st rule of robots was do no harm to humans — youâd think tay would have been programmed not to agree with murder, genocide, etc.
Global investment in renewable energy hit a record US$285.9bn (ÂŁ202.3bn) in 2015, beating the previous high of $278.5bn set in 2011, a study shows.
The 10th Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment also showed that investment in developing nations exceeded that in developed countries.
In another first, more new renewables capacity than fossil-fuel generation came online during 2015.
But it warned that much more had to be done to avoid dangerous climate change.
The assessment, produced by the Frankfurt School-Unep Collaborating Centre for Climate and Sustainable Energy Finance and Bloomberg New Energy Finance, showed that the developing world committed a total of US$156bn (up 19% on 2014 levels) in renewables (excluding large hydro) while developed nations invested US$130bn (down 8% from 2014 levels).
“A large element in this turnaround was China, which lifted its investment by 17% to US$102.9bn, or 36% of the world total,” the report observed.
However, other developing nations also contributed as six of the top 10 investors were developing nations.
Anyone hear of an online source for the Rolling Stones concert in Cuba tomorrow?
I also heard itâs going to be making a film out of it so maybe not………..

Karadzic jailed for 40 years for Bosnian Srebrenica genocide
Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic has been convicted of genocide and war crimes over the 1992-95 war, and sentenced to 40 years in jail.
UN judges in The Hague found him guilty of 10 of 11 charges, including genocide over the 1995 Srebrenica massacre.
Karadzic, 70, is the most senior political figure to face judgement over the violent collapse of Yugoslavia.
His case is being seen as one of the most important war crimes trials since World War Two.
He had denied the charges, saying that any atrocities committed were the actions of rogue individuals, not the forces under his command.
The trial, in which he represented himself, lasted eight years.

Weâre making some adjustments to Tay,” the firm said in a statement.

right, as if real life racists on twitter werenât enough.
GE amk.
Sample tweet exchange in the article:
“Tweeter:
Do you support genocide?
Tay:
Indeed I do.”
SMH.
Makes me wonder if Microsoft engineers have never read Isaac Asimov (who wrote dozens of “robot” books) — 1st rule of robots was do no harm to humans — youâd think tay would have been programmed not to agree with murder, genocide, etc.
Duh! Exactly!
Idiots
Good, hit the mofos where it hurts. the rethugs party has become a party of sociopaths, racists and bigots.
Exactly. If there wasnât the threat of lost business, you can bet Gov Deal wouldâve signed that damn thing already.

Yep Yep!

Not yet, but given the historic context, gotta think theyâd at least allow a taste of it to be shown live online.
