President Barack Obama tangoed. Donald Trump tweeted.

That about sums it up—not just the predictable pundit pile-on, but Obama’s and Trump’s radically different postures to the world, and the world’s toward them, forced into focus by a week of reopening in Cuba and terrorism in Brussels.

Trump is playing the part of angry isolationist. Obama’s the guy doing the wave at the baseball game with Raúl Castro. Trump called for the borders to be closed. Obama got in his plane Tuesday night and flew to his second big foreign stop in a week, taking him further away from Washington than he was when the bombs blew up in Belgium.

      GE Ladyhawke.

Isaac Davore’s articles this week have actually been readable — before this week, all others written by him have been snarky and spun to be as negative as possible about PBO. I wonder if this is the Trump effect — MSM realizing that GOP are actually about to nominate the worst possible candidate ever.

Did learn from this article that PBO is expected to attend NATO Summit in Warsaw Poland (Jul 8-9). The last NATO Summit was in Wales 2014. We at TODville LOVED that visit!

As PBO’s time in office edges nearer, I expect that world leaders will be clinging ever more desperately to PBO — unless the country has a dictator or RWNJ, all world leaders must be horrified at the thought of Donald Trump as POTUS.

President and Mrs. Obama are making friends wherever they go! They are loved. In the process, the opinions of the U.S. are raised, and we are no longer the pariah of the world, like we were during GWB’s admin.
We were in England in May 2001, for a college literary trip. One of the adults who went was a GWB fan…….we took a train to Wales from Bath and he sat next to an English woman. She asked him why we had elected Bush after Clinton who was so good. He gave the lame excuse that Clinton had had an affair. She laughed out loud…..”All politicians do that! That is not what counts.” She proceeded to tell him that no one could understand how our country could elect someone so stupid. I loved it!
What is sad, is that many people in the world outside the U.S. are more informed about our leaders and what they stand for and are than our own people.

Save your $$$ folks! Just saw Batman vs. Superman…..and sadly it was terrible :( It tried being ~4 movies in one (imagine the spawn of Inception, Mad Max, Transformers, and a Ben Affleck P90x infomercial) ….on top of that it was worse than the product placement of a Bond movie (If you are interested in a new Jeep Wrangler, like using Dove body wash, love Jolley Ranchers….all in the first 20 minutes)…then this is your flick! If you are into comic/DC/Marvel era movies go see Deadpool…10x better. Good news though (not a spoiler in any way) seems Sen. Stabenow decided being Gov. of Metropolis is a much better gig than representing Michigan in Congress  ….ok, that was my review.

I watched parts of PBO’s press conference in Argentina, and noticed he is doing something else for Argentina. By what he said, the way he respected President Macri, he is pulling Argentina out of their dark dictatorial days, and helping to edge them into the first rank of nations….making them a partner in fighting terrorism, promoting educational exchanges with them…..he has a way of always lifting up, not putting down. People now will know who is the President of Argentina, and it will be a favorable knowledge. He does only good when he travels, wherever it is. President Macri was just beaming and basking in the glow. In a way, PBO legitimized the Argentinian government to the world by this trip. (and he always pronounced his name correctly too!)

  14. March 24, 2025 at 9:58 pm

Is anyone sitting here watching the Argentinian news and wondering what on earth they’re talking about?

I’m going to make a bold prediction - when Hillary’s President, we’re not all going to be sitting here for 17 hours waiting for a 30 glimpse of her and Bill on the tarmac in a far flung country. :???:

Thanks LH. This is watch TV talking head miss.

      From the article:

“Because of the embargo, the Castros are able to explain away Cuba’s terrible poverty as a result of foreign oppression, and justify their repressive political tactics as a means of national self-determination. Obama brought Raul Castro onto a stage and stripped away those justifications in front of the whole country.”

      snip /

“Through this series of tiny gestures, Obama achieved what 50 years of American resistance to Cuba was not able to. He defused any lingering military tension. He showed the Cuban people that America has good intentions. And he managed to humiliate the Castros, utterly, without appearing, even in the slightest, aggressive. He did all that in a couple of hours. There’s only one word for it: genius.”

      March 24, 2025 at 11:19 pm

Article ends by summing up the feeling of everyone here in TODville. :(

“Unfortunately, whoever comes next, whether Democrat or Republican, will have nowhere near the skill that Obama has at making meaningful gestures like those he showed in Cuba. Whoever wins in November, the next American leader will inevitably be less effective—whether it’s Hillary Clinton with her compromised inertness or the impotent savagery of Trump or Cruz. Whatever the strengths and weaknesses of the Obama doctrine, in 2017, the United States will be missing its greatest foreign policy asset: the man himself.”

Maybe after Hillary four years we can convince that other fantastic Obama to run for President, Michelle Obama. Just kidding, she wants nothing to do with politics and I can’t blame her. But a girl can hope for a Yes We Can Part 2.

A big Amen, HP2! I am very much older than you, and I never imagined that the United States had the capacity to elect a President Obama’s caliber! As a student of history I an savoring all of President Obama’s historical accomplishments! But history also teaches us that progress can be easily followed by regress.”

I really hope they enjoy their time today. And POTUS owe FLOTUS a trip to India and Alaska. To the Taj Mahal, the last time they were in India they had to cancel the visit to the Taj Mahal because the King in Saudi Arabia had passed away and they went to pay respect.
