A take on President’s farewell speech. Worth a read.

    http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/lead/Obama%E2%80%99s-act-of-departure/article17036644.ece

A moment of departure is a moment of remembrance. As applause punctuated literally every sentence, Mr. Obama recollected that he began his career in Chicago working with church groups “in the shadow of closed steel mills”. He enacted his biography as the biography of all migrants, renewing America’s openness to all oppressed people. For him, two magic words sustain the miracle called America: people and change, both working through the institutions of democracy. For Mr. Obama, democracy is the force of alchemy which sustains both individual dreams while creating a notion of the common good.

Yet democracy, he claimed, for all its vitality can never be taken for granted. An act of indifference is an act of betrayal because democracy demands perpetual participation. The ritual of citizens’ participation is the only perpetual machine that keeps democracy as faith and action alive. Living democracy and dreaming democracy helps recreate democracy. The renewal of faith and the reinvention of citizenship are continuous in a functioning democracy.

The power of his narrative was moving. It was as if he had the vision of the founding fathers in his blood. The audience was touched, even moved to tears as acclamation became a ritual of solidarity. The impact was charismatic, folksy, everyday and one sensed that no demagogue or dictator could achieve this music of democracy which one calls trust. The American dream has moved migrants, refugees, pioneers, slaves, women to organise.

I agree. The writer did not need to drag Dubya’s mess into this. It was between the daughters and should have been left at that. However, I do feel that the letter and accompanying pics were more about the Bush girls’ attempt to boost their (and their family’s) image.

I appreciate all they did for Malia and Sasha - but it would have been better if we heard about it from a source other than them. E.g., if the Obama daughters had published the photos, and spoke of the kindness of the Bush daughters, then it would have seemed more sincere.

But so far, all the information is coming from the Bush daughters…and both letters they sent to the girls were “open” letters that were blasted through the media outlets.

I think they should have kept the whole thing private. They seem like decent women but there’s no need to pat themselves on the back and have the media fawn all over them for writing a letter. Wonderful that they have well wishes for our girls but keep it private.

It has been years since I posted here but I read it everyday.

      Just a few questions;
      1) Why did the GOP kill everything in the ACA that we loved and leave the tax if you don’t have insurance?
      2) Wouldn’t it be funny in our beloved President stepped down on the 19th and let Joe Biden have a day as President? It would ruin in the Inauguration, Brumps place in history, and make Joe’s day?

I am so terrified of the next four years.

I saw this movie last night. Powerful. I lost it when I saw a picture of MLK with John Lewis next to him. Then again when a picture of Katherine Johnson (one of the 3 women in the movie) was receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama. The arch of history from the fifties to present time is all there. Please see this movie. So proud to be a Democrat..this movie shows us Dems at our best.
President Kennedy, Civil Right activists (love to Rep John Lewis), John Glenn (a future Senator (D) from Ohio, to President Obama.

    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/report-cia-set-task-force-162553783.html

A US counterintelligence task force was established by the CIA in 2016 to investigate possible Russian funding of President-elect Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, the BBC reported on Friday.

The task force included the FBI, the Treasury and Justice Departments, the CIA, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the National Security Agency (NSA).

It was set up after the director of the CIA, John Brennan, received a recording of a conversation about money from the Kremlin going into Trump’s campaign coffers, the BBC’s Paul Wood reported. The recording was apparently passed to the CIA by the intelligence agency of one of the Baltic States.

On October 15, the task force was granted a warrant by a judge in the FISA court — named after the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act — to intercept the electronic records from two Russian banks that may have been implicated in the money transfer, a senior intelligence official told the BBC. Trump was not named in the warrant, but three of his associates were the subject of the inquiry.

All three associates contacted, but not named, by the BBC, denied the allegations. The current status of the investigation is unclear.

The BBC report comes amid claims, contained in a dossier written by former British spy Christopher Steele, of Trump’s extensive ties to Russia.

Should be: am. The executive families and all of their staffs have made a herculean effort for all of us (even those who “despitefully use them”) that will continue to bear fruit long after they must leave this particular time of service.
I know that many of the young staffers will be joining the resistance is smart ways that will help to continue to move the country forward, rather than backward in the abyss. They have the knowledge, skills, and passion that we will need. They have learned from the master and will be able to use and to pas on what they have learned from working by his side.

Current research says the best places for Black expats are SE Asia for those who are still building careers; Dubai and New Zealand made every list for quality of life, acceptance and work. I am concerned about Dubai because 71% of the population is made up of foreigners, most of whom are British, and this to me seems a recipe for future resentment and possible instability. I like the idea of New Zealand, common language, world leader in eco-investment and creativity, and their work on recognition and reconciliation in regard to the Maori people. There was an earthquake there a few years ago that they are still recovering from, but things are well on their way. Costa Rica is another mention, but too many white American, Canadians, and Brits (these people never stay on their own damn island) are there. One European city that got high marks was Edinburgh. It is a bit more difficult for A-A people to travel and live outside of the country because many have picked up the prejudiced attitudes of Americans and other Western countries. I never considered an African nation because they do not have that sense of kinship toward A-A that so many want and go looking for (I was never a member of this camp).
My personal dream is that one day I can just Be. An individual who lives and dies only by the choices I have made. To not have to always be on guard; to not to have to always put other people at ease or to explain myself just for living. In other words, I just want to be free.
