As to Kelly, I have despised him since he was at HS and the way he used ICE to go after immigrants. It was pretty clear then he is as racist as DT but I kept my mouth shut. I never had any respect for him and I no longer have to be silent about it. He showed his true colors today. Doesn’t mean I don’t value his service or the loss his family has suffered. But as COS he is as bad if not worse than DT by lending his rank to this idiot’s administration. He is no better than DT and his actions today were just as despicable. DT started this, including using Kelly’s son against PBO. He needs to be reminded of that fact.

I think John Kelly is just as you indicated. Cruel and bigoted. Also I wanted to shout at him, has he heard of Joining Forces? President Obama and Michelle as well as the Bidens worked tirelessly to encourage civilians to get involved in sharing the burden with military families. I know because I took that up as our county OFA service project. Along with another OFAer whose son had served in Iraq, we became involved with the outreach efforts in our area, educating people about where to plug in. I imagine John Kelly never looked into any of this since he acts like it never existed. To him I think President Obama should be disappeared. Right now I think Kelly is part of our national problem and not someone who has a part to play in the solution.
The media is falling for this oh great hero Gen. Kelly bologna. As I have said before yes I have sympathy for Kelly losing his son. I have sympathy for all of the families who lose their loved ones. But attacking that Congresswoman, no I do not respect Kelly for that.

Good morning TOD. Thanks always to Nerdy for keeping this much-needed haven up and running for us! SO energizing to see PBO on the campaign trail. I hate that he has to do that when he should be able to just enjoy being away from all of that, but obviously he too is very concerned about the direction the country has taken and the destruction that has already occurred. All the tweets from Nerdy and meta and Dudette were SO refreshing! I sometimes fear that instead of the current nightmare administration motivating people to mobilize and register and get out and vote, they instead have become even more cynical to the point of giving up on democracy. Really hoping that’s not the case. PBO said that Dems get sleepy and complacent when it comes time for midterms. That’s an understatement. 😦 I’m beyond the point at which I wonder whether enough Americans even know what midterm elections are for, and just how freaking important they are to their day to day lives, their personal rights, and their quality of life.
The scary thing is, as CEB mentioned yesterday, the average person is completely oblivious to the scale of incompetence and corruption in the present administration, and to the havoc and destruction they’re wreaking behind the scenes. Not many people follow along quite as closely as we at TOD do, and the mainstream media sure doesn’t help with getting any hard facts out there.
Anyway, enough of that. Happy Birthday to Don! (my birthday twin!) 🙂 I know I wished for “one annulled 2016 US presidential election” for you a while back. That’s still the case. It can’t come soon enough.

Donald Trump was today accused of peddling ‘fake news’ and stirring up hate after he wrongly linked the rise in crime in England and Wales to ‘Radical Islamic terror’.
The US president sent a tweet referring to figures out yesterday showing crime increased by 13 per cent last year and warning ‘We must keep American safe’.
But British MPs tore into Mr Trump for talking ‘nonsense’ and said he is ‘spreading fear and xenophobia’ by wrongly blaming the rise on terrorism.
Others accused him of peddling ‘fake news’ and pointed out terrorism accounts for a ‘tiny’ proportion of crime in Britain and the rise is down to increases in offences such as stalking.
Jo Swinson, deputy leader of the Lib Dems, accused Mr Trump of being ‘misleading and spreading fear’ while Labour MP Stephen Doughty said he is ‘talking nonsense’.
Mr Trump wrote on Twitter: ‘Just out report: “United Kingdom crime rises 13% annually amid spread of Radical Islamic terror.” Not good, we must keep America safe!’

Last night listening to President Obama speak gave me a new sense of hope. I truly believe that we will survive President Trump and flourish, but getting back to President. Good morning TOD folks! yesterday’s event with PBO was a balm to the soul from all the crap from WH.
I was furious last night about Kelly’s remarks from the WH podium-as well as the media’s reaction to them-and I woke incensed this morning. There are SO MANY things wrong with the whole spectacle you could go through line by line and criticize all of it. But a couple of additional things I’d like to point out:
First and foremost, when Kelly got news of his son’s death, he was active duty military who had served his entire life. WHY would he or anyone else think that what comforted him would comfort a civilian family with nothing like his experience or background? Again, just complete lack of empathy.
Second, watching this last night, we once again have a privileged white male bemoaning the changes in America and wanting to go back to the days when “women were sacred”, religion was sacred and military families were sacred? EXCUSE ME! This is the same old same old keep women barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen days “sacred” and POC facing discrimination in every aspect of their lives days sacred. Not to mention the Jews, Muslims, Buddhists religions sacred? I am sick to death of seeing photos of this administration in all its white male glory.
Third, the utter hypocrisy of his whole attack on Rep Wilson being on the call is mind boggling. HE was in the call on DT’s end, how was that any different than Rep Wilson who was there at the family’s request? Moreover, it was HIS BOSS who made this whole thing political and has continued it for five days now.
Fourth, his refusal to take any questions from reporters unless they personally knew someone who was part of a Gold Star family is another attack on freedom of the press and our First Amendment rights. It is despicable. Under his reasoning, no one should be able to question anything not in their personal sphere of knowledge. Under that rationale, he should not be COS given it is not a military position and he has no other experience.
Again, I cannot stand this man, have despised him since he was head of Homeland Security. As a soldier his entire life, he thinks DT’s calls to families who have lost loved ones is brave? About the most idiotic statement I have ever heard. This is what his boss signed up for, to use his words.
If this is what we have protecting us from utter catastrophe, God help us all.

Okay, maybe that’s a little overstating it, but what can I say, we’ve been severely lacking in hope and here we have Mr. Hope himself back on the national political scene campaigning and reminding us what it was like to have an actual honest-to-God adult speaking to Americans. He campaigned for Democrats in both New Jersey and Virginia and in the process threw some political elbows at his successor and the depressing state of the American political landscape. You know how when you used to wake up, and check Twitter it was kind of fun, but now it just feels like someone spitting directly into your face first thing in the morning? Yeah, these speeches were the first things in a while that don’t make me feel that way. …
