Spent my morning cooking things to take to a friend. ……frozen……have more to do in the next few days. Our dear friends in Fairfax (VA). Husband has Azheimer’s and a number of other health issues. Betty is trying to keep him at home as long as possible. In August, they moved to MI (outside Toledo, OH) to be near only child/son. It just hasn’t worked out for many reasons so this weekend, they are moving back to VA. She had house sitters in the house (until they could move into a new home). When I asked if there is anything I can do, she said, “Come and help me unpack.” (She had only unpacked 50 boxes in MI.) It was very difficult for her to say/ask that. There’s a BIG support system in VA, as well as all the doctors they’ve had for years, but she (and Bob) are only comfortable with us going, being in their home and helping unpack. So that’s the plan……Nov. 1 we will go up for 4 or 5 days. I’m taking as much prepared things as I can. We can eat on them while there and there will be plenty left for them.
Just finished cutting down my day lilies and hostas and picking up a few leaves. Now gotta shower, eat lunch and run a couple errands.
The only one missing (out of the gazillions of lovelies available) is the photo of the Obamas with the Queen of England! I don’t think ol’ QEII wants trump anywhere near her. Nor can I blame her.
It’s been a long time, but I’m so very happy to hear from Obama again. A light in the darkness-one of many.
If I read about one more person saying that Obama should have come out sooner, or in a different way, I’ll scream. Every other speech, Obama kept insisting that “we are the ones we are waiting for”. And he also led by example-training camps for volunteers, encouraging people to work on their own, and so forth. He’s the reason we can have a resistance-there was a critical mass of people who were trained with his two Presidential campaigns as well as inspired by them. They knew enough and had enough connections to each other to get going.
Also Biff (Bob Cesca’s nickname for the orange toddler) wanted desperately a foil. By Hillary and Obama going on with their lives, there isn’t a narrative he could use, a target he could fix on. He’s flailing in the face of an opposition that’s faceless, that’s big, that’s decentralized. It’s all over and all under.

The movement has many moving parts, gears working on various parts of the multi-faceted resistance. If one head is cut off or derailed, the rest carries the battle forward. Because there is no one leader to be hunted down and taken down to demoralize and stop the others, the resistance is unstoppable. The DNC can not and should not be the voice of the resistance, if they ever get their shit together they have a role to play in cultivating progressive democrats and supporting them as they run for various offices locally and nationally if they choose. But this job is being done by other groups, many of them female, without the bullshit male posturing and with more success. With its many moving parts and so many different kinds of people involved all over the country, the resistance is more able to stay alive and effective. In this case, the fact that democrats are not a monolith will be to our advantage.
I remember what happened to the Civil Rights Movement when King was killed. Since it was centralized in a few people, a lot of progress got stalled. Maybe it was the only way it could be done then, but having a lot of groups working on various facets would have helped keep something together. The marches could have continued, some people who were disengaged could have been working on local issues.
Also, I’ve been reading about how some people are getting frustrated and tired with all of the organizing and such. One advantage of a broad-based movement is that people can take time off to heal without missing a beat. I wish MLK could have been able to hand off leadership-the public face-to another charismatic person who could keep things going while he took a vacation or just slept in a few days.
