Straits Times: US First Lady Michelle Obama Visits Qatar; Makes Stop At United States Air Base In Qatar
First Lady Michelle Obama visited the largest US air force base outside the United States Tuesday on the first full day of a Middle East tour. “This isn’t an easy post; you guys are doing the tough work,” she told the assembled servicemen and women at Al-Udeid base, the forward headquarters for the US Central Command outside the Qatari capital. Obama is in Qatar as part of a seven-day regional tour during which she is expected to focus on the issue of “cultural beliefs” obstructing girls’ education.
She is set to make a keynote speech at the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) in Doha Wednesday, as part of her well-publicised efforts to promote girls’ education globally. In an email ahead of her trip, Obama wrote that 62 million girls across the globe are not going to school at all, urging support for the Let Girls Learn initiative that she launched with President Barack Obama earlier this year. Obama was accompanied by late-night talk show host Conan O’ Brien as part of the morale-boosting visit to troops. O’Brien, whose Conan programme airs on TBS cable television, put on a show for the troops, part of which will be broadcast later this year.
Thank you, Shonda Rhimes for reflecting the world as it should be. Also, the 3 women of color who have won Lead Actress at the SAG Awards have all come from Shonda Rhimes’ shows. She has forever changed the face of TV and if you aren’t watching any of her shows, you need to correct that mistake
The LOVE that Taraji P. Henson showed the Black actresses who won last night is beautiful. She gave them standing ovations and led the cheers and made sure the audience recognized such huge accomplishments
That vine of Viola and Taraji hugging is a masterclass in how to be ambitious, excellent AND supportive. vine.co/v/ePMbV6OxBAn
“It’s a day that’s been months in the making: On Tuesday, Gov. Bill Walker’s Medicaid expansion program began accepting applications. With the official rollout, more than 20,000 Alaskans who previously did not qualify for Medicaid coverage became eligible”
This from a Bernie Sanders supporter. This is not just one or two or three supporters. Increasingly, a large number of his supporters sound like this when they open their mouths, and it’s disturbing. Message to the other Democratic candidates:STOP TAKING BLACK VOTERS FOR GRANTED
The #AllLivesMatter hashtag is such dehumanizing BS. It’s not just conservatives promoting it, but also progressives. You are not the one being murdered everyday. You are not the one facing the horrors of institutional racism, yet you want to derail a movement by centering yourself. Selfishness in a nutshell
