ah yes, choi….

November 2010:

EqualityGiving.org: In its first 25 months, the Obama Administration…

Signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which expanded existing United States federal hate crime law to include crimes motivated by a victim’s actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability – the first positive federal LGBT legislation in the nation’s history

Signed repeal of Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell

Signed the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act

Reversed an inexcusable US position by signing the UN Declaration on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

Extended benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees in 2009 and, further, in 2010

Lifted the HIV Entry Ban effective January 2010

Issued diplomatic passports, and provided other benefits, to the partners of same-sex foreign service employees

Committed to ensuring that federal housing programs are open to all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity

Banned job discrimination based on gender identity throughout the Federal government (the nation’s largest employer)

Eliminated the discriminatory Census Bureau policy that kept gay relationships from being counted

Instructed HHS to require any hospital receiving Medicare or Medicaid funds (virtually all hospitals) to allow LGBT visitation rights

Required all grant applicants seeking HUD funding to comply with state and local anti-discrimination laws that protect LGBT individuals

Adopted transgender recommendations on the issuance of gender-appropriate passports that will ease barriers to safe travel and that will provide government-issued ID that avoids involuntary “outing” in situations requiring ID, like hiring, where a gender-appropriate driver’s license or birth certificate is not available

Extended domestic violence protections to LGBT victims

Extended the Family and Medical Leave Act to cover employees taking unpaid leave to care for the children of same-sex partners

Issued guidance specifically to assist LGBT tenants denied housing on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity

Cut back authority to discharge under Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell from hundreds of generals to just 6 civilian appointees, effectively ending discharges while working toward a permanent end to the policy.

Launched the first-ever national study of discrimination against members of the LGBT community in the rental and sale of housing

Determined that Section 3 of DOMA is unconstitutional, that discrimination against LGBT citizens should be subject to “heightened scrutiny” and that it will no longer defend this portion of the law in court.

Vacated a court order that would have deported a gay American’s Venezuelan partner

Endorsed the Baldwin-Lieberman bill, The Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act of 2009, to provide FULL partnership benefits to federal employees

Released the first Presidential PRIDE proclamations since 2000

Hosted the first LGBT Pride Month Celebration in White House history

Appointed the first ever transgender DNC member

Testified in favor of ENDA, the first time any official of any administration has testified in the Senate on ENDA

Hired more openly LGBT officials in its first two years – more than 150, including more than 20 “Senate-confirmables” – than any previous administration hired in four years or eight

Named open transgender appointees (the first President ever to do so)

Emphasized LGBT inclusion in everything from the President’s historic NAACP address (“The pain of discrimination is still felt in America. By African American women paid less for doing the same work as colleagues of a different color and a different gender …. By our gay brothers and sisters, still taunted, still attacked, still denied their rights.”) … to the first paragraph of his Family Day proclamation (“Whether children are raised by two parents, a single parent, grandparents, a same-sex couple, or a guardian, families encourage us to do our best and enable us to accomplish great things”) and his Mothers Day proclamation (“Nurturing families come in many forms, and children may be raised by two parents, a single mother, two mothers, a step-mom, a grandmother, or a guardian. Mother’s Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate these extraordinary caretakers”)

Spoke out against discrimination at the National Prayer Breakfast (“We may disagree about gay marriage, but surely we can agree that it is unconscionable to target gays and lesbians for who they are – whether it’s here in the United States or, as Hillary mentioned, more extremely in odious laws that are being proposed most recently in Uganda.”)

Dispatched the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to call on the Senate to repeal Don’t Ask / Don’t Tell

Publicly invited the shunned Mississippi high school prom student to the White House

Successfully fought for UN accreditation of IGLHRC (the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission) – against Republican attempts to block it

Awarded $13.3 million to the LA Gay & Lesbian Center to create a model program for LGBTQ youth in the foster care system

Hosted first-ever White House transgender policy meeting

If you’ve had the misfortune to visit PL sites recently you’ll have seen how much the ‘Obama-is-a-Homophobe!’ crew hate “the list” (as they call it) because …. um ….. dunno ….. maybe because it just proves they’re a bunch of lying turds? Or maybe they just think a McCain/Palin administration would have done so, so much more for LGBT rights?

*****

Wouldn’t it be nice if Dan was honest? eg “Sorry guys, I have no choice but to ignore the facts and continue labeling Obama as a homophobe who is the worst President in American history when it comes to LGBT equality – despite his record being pretty remarkable – because if I did I wouldn’t be a professional left hero any more and my media invitations would dry up. Hey, gotta stay in that spotlight!”

****

But hey, he’s a ‘progressive’!

November 2010 – C.D. Kirven (co-founder of Get Equal Now): An appeal to Dan Choi: Stop the gender baiting – Dear Dan: As a member of the LGBT community fighting against bigotry, I understand the depth of your passion….

….A large number of those targeted by the policy (DADT) are women. In 2009, women made up 14 percent of the Army, but accounted for up to 48 percent of DADT’s discharges.

Your comment after the failed DADT vote in the Senate last month – “Harry Reid is a pussy. … He’ll be bleeding once a month” – is almost too insulting to take seriously….

…. I’m a woman before anything else, so I refuse to tolerate anyone publicly demeaning women. Personally, I’m very hurt and disappointed in you as a leader. This truly breaks my heart.

Unfortunately, this type of misogynistic behavior is nothing new in the LGBT community …You should lead our community by opposing gender baiting and understanding that those kinds of comments are unacceptable.

…As efforts to improve race relations within the LGBT community are almost non-existent, and as sexism slowly leaves the shadows, you as a leader will hopefully seize the opportunity to unify us instead of dividing us along gender lines.

My plea will most likely go unanswered because I’m a middle-class lesbian of color who can’t afford to pay to play….

This pathetic piece of garbage needs to be arrested for something. It can’t be legal to be that stupid. He’s such an attention hog, plus, he gives his Republican roots away when he uses Republican talking points. I wonder how Rachel will defend him now.

Rachael is pretty good at twisting herself in knots to defend the indefensible. Did you see her this week, going to bat for Weiner even after he had resigned? Like any good PL, she knows how to create an alternate reality to push an agenda.

Relative to living in the real world, Dan Choi is an attention “hopojoe.”

I don’t like Republicans candidates running for president but when Don Choi compared them to HIV on Lawrence Odennel he reenforced by belief that he is mentally troubled. May be from the War OR from HATE.

Aravosis and Choi will call homophobe no matter what is done because that’s all they have. Aravosis was pissed not to long ago because a National LGBT group came out in support of the President and he said that the President only acts when pressure is put on him and they gave their endorsement too cheaply.

No matter these lists – it’s always the next thing that makes them call “hater/homophobe” and if there was marriage equality tomorrow they’d find something else to call “homophobe” on.

They’re crying wolf – it’s long past time to start ignoring them because they’re full of shit.

Indeed, StR! Choi and Aravosis are so delusional and we need not waste time and energy on them. I think any Objective person knows that they are full of BS! Any fair minded person, who objectively evaluates the President’s policies on gay/lesbian issues, knows that you are absolutely spot-on: “they’re full of shit.”

He said he will not endorse this president if PBO doesn’t come out for Marriage Equally. Really, choi? This President will never ask for your endorsement. No way in Hell.

He said the same thing about DADT. This loon will just find something else to grandstand about to keep the PL enthralled with him once there is marriage equality. He’s a mentally unstable huckster.

he never voted for PBO to begin with, so who gives a flying Frack? He can take his buzz cut and stick it up the RNC’s a**

I watched LO tonight and when he asked Adam Green did everyone who attended the nutroots event agree with what they were spouting….he had to admit that NO there were people there of varying opinions……….So I gathered there were people there who refused to fall in line with these attention seekers.

    • June 17, 2011 at 10:33 pm

My question is why would Lawrence have that idiots Choi, and Green on his show, specially without having anyone there to respond to their B.S.

Because he’s just another player in the right wing pro-Republican agenda pushing mainstream media. He’s not a journalist. He’s an entertainer on an entertainment network, MSNBC.

I don’t want to speak for a community I’m not a part of or closely affiliated with, but it seems to me, from reading comments throughout the web, that many trans individuals really appreciate this list. Several have expressed feeling ignored or even discriminated against at times by those fighting for LGBT rights, so they appreciate what Obama has done.

Before the Obama Presidency, I had no idea how bad at everything the far left flank is. They’re bad at proposing realistic, achievable legislation. They’re bad a negotiating and finding common ground within their party and outside of it, even though that is the only way to achieve progress on the issues they claim to care about. And they are horrible, abominable, hideous judges of character. These people want recast the Democratic party in their image but have you taken a look at the characters they choose as the idealized versions of themselves? John Edwards, Alan Grayson, Anthony Weiner, Lt. Choi, Arianna Huffington.

Who in their right mind would want Lt. Choi to represent them in anything? Genuinely honorable people, with honest disagreements, extend mutual respect as they attempt to find common ground. Not Choi. He chains himself to a fence. He dramatically casts off his West Point ring. He tweets on more than one occasion that the President that has done more for gay rights than any other, is the worst President in history.

Not one of these narcissistic stunts did a damn thing to dismantle DADT or the Defense of Marriage Act. Nothing he did influenced Robert Gates or rank and file soldiers. The members of the professionally pessimistic progressive echo chamber are delusional to think that hecklers and Dan Choi caused the end of DADT. That is not how the real world works. Do they really think that Robert Gates and the entire military chain of command was influenced by a single utterance this man has made? They pick the worst people, with the worst character flaws and want the rest of us to worship them, then accuse us of being starstruck bots. No wonder they weren’t ever able to get anything significant done for decades. They are too arrogant to ever admit that they may be wrong about the strategies and politicians they support no matter how many times it results in failure. Arrogant ignorance is not the path to progress, but they’re too many hard headed, narcissists who won’t listen to anyone but themselves, so they’ll keep doing the same thing, keep alienating potential allies, keep going all in for jerks like Weiner and Choi and keep on achieving nothing and wonder why.

Quite eloquent and you’re spot on. In my view, Lt. Choi should have been stripped of his military rank. Anyone who would put on full military dress and hang from a pole is not fit for service. Choi wants equality – you’ll get it, you either show some respect for the military and your role in it and keep your private political pursuits separate or you’re out. I wish someone in the military would challenge this buffoon. This is getting old….I personally think he is a disgrace. I so tired of different political sects trying to bully the president the OLD civil rights guard, Tavis Smiley, Choi, Cornel West, Professional Left – it’s all so pathetic and sickening.

I think Choi is a perfect example of a Republican tea-bagger, sorry- but nothing will make me believe he has a democratic or liberal bone in his body. I’m not buying it. This ‘tweet’ is so ridiculous it’s laughable.. ANYONE that takes him serious on any level of politics at this point is a fool. I have nothing but scorn for Choi and anyone that follows him.

The entertainer Rachael Maddow takes him seriously. And this is one of the reasons I can never take her seriously. For a Rhodes Scholar, she is a total underachiever, but that’s typical of the professional left. Instead of using her smarts for good and actually getting into public service or being a real journalist in the old tradition, she plays host to fools like Dan Choi, Adam Green, Cenk, etc. I am not at all impressed with Rachael. I don’t care if she gets it right some of the time. She too is a petulant child who ought to be ignored.

These types of “progressives” have never ever accomplished anything in this country. They were the privileged fools hanging out in coffee houses and jazz clubs in Greenwich Village bitching about civil rights, but would never ever join the Freedom Rides. They’ve always existed and they’ve always been a non-factor because they’re sanctimonious cowards. They don’t give a rat’s behind about the middle class and poor people. In their minds, these folks and their struggles exist simply to be used as pawns against conservatives so that they can feel like they’re the good guys. They don’t actually care if folks can afford healthcare or if urban and rural schools are up to par. They don’t care about progress. That’s not even on their radar.

Hey, thanks for the list of all the things the POTUS has done, and please keep them coming. People over at barackobama.com are in dire need of lists.
