Morning all! What a wonderful photo to wake up to. I’ve been MIA (except for a few tweets here and there) preparing for my House Party to celebrate PBO’s 50th. We’re gonna have about 15 people. Yay! That’s 15 Obamacrats to work for 2012.
Chips, just love the photos in the behind the scenes post. Our President and VP and Minority Leader are just the awesome. And Pres sure looks fine in those casual clothes. (Sorry, Lisa. Gotta tell the truth.)
Hope the Pres and all TODers have a spectacular day.
That’s great Proud! Have a wonderful day. Enjoy your party – have a nice glass of wine and hope the festivities mark the beginning of a productive year of working on behalf our People’s President!!!! 🙂
i will be attending on here in Philly…i am soooooooo excited….Here we gooooo
Good luck with the party, Proud of Obama.
No problem saying that Mine and Miche’s man is cute. That’s why we married him 😉
Here’s another interesting article on the deal from the LA Times.
Thans, POB. Soon, people are going to see that this president once again was and is always thinking long term.
THIS——“That’s why the party that can do well without a deal almost always does better with a deal.” – THIS is exactly what has been going on in every negotiation. Republicans can walk away, blow everything up and STILL not suffer for it with their base. To the rest of America, they will lie shamelessly and the media will let it slide.
Thanks proud of obama for providing a link to the op-ed in the LA Times. Good luck with the 50th Birthday Party for President Obama that you are hosting. Can’t wait to here about the details later. I’m hoping I can get a ride to where my local OFA is having their party. They are having it in a pub that isn’t close to where I live, and I don’t drive.
I bet if you contact a host, or another attendee, you will be able to get someone to pick you up. That’s just how we do! I hope you get there and have fun!!!
Thank you, The event host was indeed trying to help me get a ride, but my husband is able to take me after all. I wasn’t sure because we just got back from vacation on Sunday, and I wasn’t sure how much work he had to do and if he would get home in time. It should be great. According to the host there will be a lot of people attending. I believe that it includes four groups from South Jersey.
Thank you Lord, for once again you have blessed the world. Fifty years ago you had one of your best plans in motion and because of you we have our wonderful president Barrack Obama. you knew then that he was the one born for these times. we thank you so much for your grace and mercy . we don’t deserve him but we pray that he lives a long and strong life. Amen Happy Birthday Mr President.
And thank you Lord for keeping watch over President Barack Obama, his Family, and his Administration. We give thanks to you Lord for protecting and keeping him from all harm and danger. Lord Jesus, we just thank you for having the whole World In your hands. Lord Jesus we just thank you this morning for keeping your promises, we thank you LOrd for never leaving or forsaking us. Lord you are worthy, and there’s no one like you Lord God. Thank you, In Jesus name, Amen
Amen, joyce and luci .
I remember that Chicago Sun Times newspaper: Mr. President. Boom! No other words needed. It packed a wonderful and delightful punch and it still does everyday. I hope he enjoys himself even while he’s selling the debt deal and talking about jobs. This is what a lot of people need to understand about the debt deal. On the surface and the way Boehner has been smiling like the cat that got the cream; it seems like repubs won. They didn’t. It might not look like the best deal now, but in the long term view, dems protected a lot of Americans and got a lot of leverage in the deal. As more and more people begin to digest it and as days pass and the “experts” peruse the deal, they’ll actually see that PBO and VP Biden were skilled negotiators. If dems are smart, they’ll corral together and sell the true message of how they protected vulnerable citizens in this deal. They’ll hammer repubs everyday about lack of promises kept in the way of jobs. For example, they could be like Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Steve Israel who have immediately started pounding repubs in the house of reps hard for not passing a measure that allows the FAA to function, thereby causing a furlough of 4000 administrative workers, losing the federal government $1 billion in tax revenue (yep you got that right; $1 billion), halting contractors in their tracks when they could be hiring workers to rebuild runways, planes, and airports. They could tell the Americans the true reason why the repubs are screwing with the FAA and the economy. It’s all down to petty politics. Repubs are screwing with the FAA because they want to cut off subsidies for rural airports in 13 cities. Why do they want to do that? All those rural airports are in democratic controlled districts and they know that if they cut off funds, local and state governments lose tax revenue, people lose jobs, and who do they blame? Yep you guessed it: The dems who represent them in the house of reps. If democrats could keep talking about these and many more ills perpetrated by the repubs while hammering the repubs about lack of jobs bills, they have a firm footing for 2012.
In news from our neighbors across the pond, another Murdoch top brass has been arrested and charged obstruction of justice and wiretapping. The plot thickens.
In other news due to the calls, emails, and tweets that MSNBC got about Pat Buchanan referring to President Obama as “your boy” on the Rev Al’s show yesterday, Buchanan on Morning Joe this morning didn’t offer an apology, instead he tried to justify what he said. Yup. Tried to justify it. He said that it wasn’t a racially tinged or denigrating slur, that it was a boxing terminology. He also tried to drag Rev Al into the mud with him by saying that Rev agreed with him and also used a boxing terminology called the rope-a-dope. Rev Al did use the word rope-a-dope but he used that when he told Pat that President Obama had bamboozled the GOP and the American people now realize how dangerous the teapartiers in congress are. When Pat called the President “your boy” Rev Al had a shocked expression on his face and he called Pat on the mat for using that term. The point is that it though he did not apologize ( which we should not let go unscathed) our calls, emails, and tweets made a difference. I just wanted everyone to know that it was because of the backlash directed at MSNBC that Pat even addressed the issue. Our VOICES do matter. Never think that the networks aren’t paying attention to viewer feedback. They do. So keep on hammering them and calling them out when they out and out lie. Call, email, send a letter, send a fax, and tweet. IT MATTERS. Once again let me repeat this: IT MATTERS.
Yes, ut, our VOICE does matter. I’m happy to hear that Pat feels the HEAT enough to try and put a spin on what he said….NOT GOOD ENOUGH! We want him GONE BABY GONE. I’ll be sending another email and calling to say Pat…HAS…TO…GO! Thanks for the update ut. WE’RE FIRED UP AND NOT TAKING IT ANYMORE!!!!!!
Thanks Utaustin for another excellent summary. The Pat Buchannans out there are breathing their last gasps because they are watching their precious past disappear right before their eyes. And yes, phone calls, tweets, faxes, emails DO matter.
Does anyone have the full text of Rep. Lamborn’s apology. My take away is that in fact it was a non-apology apology. I am planning to call his office again and want to be precise. I understand he sent a letter to the President, referring to “a term that some people find insensitive”
—-He needs to go on record as to if he believes that term is racist.
Still waiting for Buchanon to apologize…..I think the heat needs to stay on until he does, and a lid is put on his bullshit, racist commentary.
Called MSNBC several times to register complaints and request a full apology from Pat Buchanon to the President and the country be made on Rev Sharptons show. I also conveyed that Starbucks was next on my call list and that MSNBC’s cavalier conduct would be impacting Starbuck’s bottomline as well.
Rep. Lamborn’s D.C. office is not currently staffed and his mail box is full. Off to write a letter, I personally don’t feel he has taken responsiblity for his racist comments so feel his half-assed attempt to apologize still comes up short.
As a former staffer, I can tell you that the “office is not currently staffed” is bull. Congressional offices are open except for national holidays whether the member is in town or not. Summer is the busiest time of the year with lots of families in town looking for tours and information. How you gonna close your office? Naw, they’re just not answering the main numbers — and that is a measure of how overwhelming the calls have been. Either fax them or get a hold of a direct number for a staffer.
A BIG thanks Anna Luc for that “inside tip”. 🙂
I resorted to e-mail, which he limits to his Colorado constiruents. I just borrowed a zip and area code to get over the hurdle….I didn’t like doing that, but I feel strongly those elected to federal positions represent all Americans. I’ll try calling his Colorado office direct. I want to see his full apology, what has been conveyed in the press doesn’t measure up to him either taking responsiblity for the offensive and demeaning impact of his comments, or a sincere attempt to make amends for his conduct. I am not done with him yet.
I really appreciate your insights and background….
Lamborn Issues President an Apology
Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05) today sent a personal letter to President Barack Obama apologizing for using a term some find insensitive. Lamborn was attempting to tell a radio audience last week that the President’s policies have created an economic quagmire for the nation and are responsible for the dismal economic conditions our country faces. He regrets that he chose the phrase “tar baby,” rather than the word “quagmire.”
Sonjia, that is what I had read…doesn’t truly acknowledge the import of his choice of words, or make amends to the people he demeaned.
I wrote him and asked him which camp he belonged in. The camp that thought it insensitive, or the camp that did not. I suggested he might need to reconsider how many people he has offended, the reasons they are offended, and what he has revealed about himself in the process.
I said until he was more definitive and accountable for his comments, he impressed me as being cowardly and bigoted, and attempting to cover for an inconvienent truth.
Congressional Democratic leaders spoke about the failure of Congress to reauthorize the FAA.
Forget what the GOP and media is reporting. This is all about Delta not wanting their employee to have a union. Check out the video.
I will not fly on Delta until they get a union.
This has cost one billion in tax revenue, this is not about cutting cost. The GOP lies.
Delta was sending their own employees to lobby congress against unionizing some time ago and I wrote to them. I got a reply so it helps to contact them and let them know that you will not fly with them. It’s been awhile ago. I went to the Delta web site and found someone to contact about it then.
I was Northwest before the merge with Delta and glad to say I left before that marriage was consumated. The only thing that marred my many years working for the airline was the attitude of management towards it’s unioned workers. It was IMO a detremental, counter productive energy that undermined the potential of their human resources.
Good morning TOD family and Chipsticks. Thank you Chipsticks for that beautiful photo of our beloved President Barack Obama. And thank you TODers for these wonderful prayers this morning. God bless!
Good Morning to all what a great day to celebrate number one the President’s Birthday and to keep working to give control back to sane people in Congress. The Countdown goes like this there are 462 Days: 11,088 Hours: 66 Weeks to get it done.YES WE CAN DO IT AGAIN
Chipsticks thank You for giving me the possibility of sending the most beautiful bouquet of roses to my overall favorite politician President Barack Hussein Obama. Congratulations Mr. President!
Landslide Obama/Biden 2012!
Morning all. Gosh I love his eyes. One more day until his big 50th and two more days until mine (not my 50th but my b-day hehe)
Happy birthday in advance Kay! It must feel good to share the same birthday week with our Commander-In-Chief.
Happy birthday in advance of your day collegkay….hope your day is special.
I am a Leo too, funny, I feel really proud(very lion like) to share the same birthday month and zodiac sign with our wonderful President. My great grandfather was an August 4th baby…..he was an activist too, and responsible for writing important education reform legislation enacted by the South Dakota Senate in the 1920’s. I am also proud that my relatives united with members in their little rural So. Dakota community, stood down the Klu Klux Klan when they tried to to infiltrate their community, and ran them out of town. As the story is told guns where in hand, but never engaged. The cowards ran, with their pathetic tails tucked between their legs. Sadly racism is still a battle that is ours to fight.
Happy Birthday Mr. President, tomorrow the world celebrates you!
Happy Birthday @collegekay…many blessings for a wonderful day
Good morning TOD friends. Right after the election, I put this photo on the wall in my office at work and it remaind there until I retired. I have that newspaper in my Obama collection. 🙂
The administration has announced that it expects lower fundraising this summer than expected because the Presient had to cancel at least ten crucial fundraisers due to the debt crisis issue. Le’ts try to fill in some of the gap with the President’s Birthday fundraising. It sure would be a hoot if we could scare the bjesus out of those who thought they could stronghold his efforts on this. I just sent in my donation and I plan to send in more before the end of the month. YES WE CAN DO MORE!! OBAMA 2012!
I’m going to send in what I can. Now.
Same here. Also now.
Will do likewise.
I’m in for another donation, too. Great idea for the timing of it.
Morning every one. Too bad about the fundraisers being canceled. We will have to do our best to make up the difference.
A little OT, but this a very good read by Booman.
Does anyone know how I can find a copy of the actual debt ceiling bill — not the fact sheet.
I’ve worked for lawyers and I have a terrible time reading these bills — thank God for the excellent analysis from Deaniac and others cited here. But I’d like to look at the exact bill.
I have a couple of questions I’m sure you guys can answer for clarity:
Is it true that the walling off of the Big Three is in the first phase cuts, the trigger, but anything goes for the commission? Before I tell my doubting friends that SS, Medicare and Medicaid are virtually safe no matter what, I want to make sure I’m correct.
Deem and pass the 2012 budget — in this deal or not?
I found the bill. Now to try to read the darned thing.
Good luck 🙂
Like I said, I’ve worked for lawyers. I was a real estate paralegal who drafted complicated construction lending documents (okay, 35 years ago but I still did it!) I’m not intimidated by legal jargon but I have a hard time figuring out what I’m reading.
There may be some misconceptions flying around and I want to make sure I know what I’m talking about.
And I just got stumped: I’m trying to determine if the Big Three are essentially walled off throughout the process, or just the initial cuts and the triggered cuts — meaning anything is on the table for the commission. I was referred back to ‘paragraph 2’ but paragraph 2 of what?
Yeah, like the tea party freshmen have a clue what they’re reading, if they bother to read at all. Or is reading elitist?
Deaniac at TPV would probably be the best person to ask.
For some reason, Deaniac actually has a life and can’t always answer every dumb question I have. Go figure.
That being said, I went back to what I consider the best summary out there: http://www.thepeoplesview.net/2011/08/paul-krugman-is-political-rookie-or-how.html We’re all aware of it but it bears re-linking. It’s that good. I’m assuming the actual bill tracks with the summary of the fact sheet — if there are significant differences I would expect Deaniac and others to bring that to our attention.
Entitlements (GOD I hate that word but it’s the word in the bill) and revenues are on the table for the commission. The Big Three are virtually walled off in the initial phase and in the trigger but it appears that everything is on the table for the commission. We still have a battle ahead of us between now and the fall.
The commission, by the way, can hold hearings and we should push for transparency in these negotations as much as possible. It’s not all the backroom deal as it’s being portrayed. Or doesn’t have to be.
Committees of the House and Senate can make recommendations to the commission — so Thom Hartmann and others were lying that there is no input from Congress to the committee. I sometimes love Thom, I sometimes loathe Thom, but I never thought he was a liar and he lied yesterday. Shame on him.
Good morning everyone! I love that picture!!! Also BWD over at TOAITR has a wonderful picture of the POTUS and VPOTUS. It actually brought tears to my eyes. You need to check it out.
I am really looking forward to our party tonight. I know we will be meeting others who support this President. Looking forward to seeing that beautiful smile on the Presidents face!
Well I would hope that the people that were planning to attend the fundraisers and were planning to give money, and knowing that it was cancelled due to the theatrics of the republicans refusing to raise the debt ceiling, would give anyway. They could reschedule the President’s visit at a later date.
I think it’s still a great idea to give if you can for the President’s Birthday Fundraiser.
And I just think I found another lie of omission by Thom Hartmann yesterday. He said the commission would come to its conclusions behind closed doors with no chance of input from the rest of Congress.
“(ii) RECOMMENDATIONS OF COMMITTEES- Not later than October 14, 2011, each committee of the House of Representatives and the Senate may transmit to the joint committee its recommendations for changes in law to reduce the deficit consistent with the goal described in paragraph (2) for the joint committee’s consideration.”
Regular committees of Congress can submit to the commission, their ideas for deficit reduction. Am I wrong?
That’s what it looks like, but even if that was not written why in the world would Hartman think these committee members wouldn’t talk over the details or proposals with other members of the party?
He made a big deal yesterday that no one else in Congress would have a say. He was making a big deal about not allowing amendments because the vote on the commission is fast-tracked. So let them hash it all out before. There will be no filibusters either — an up or down vote.
He also conflated some nonsense of his own fevered brain about the House being able to do something with revenues and the Senate couldn’t. Randi Rhodes ripped him apart on that one, using the bill itself. Now, Hartmann is one of the most intelligent guys around. He had to know that the clause he quoted (because that’s what sent a bunch of people over the edge) said that something had to originate in the House. All the section did was clarify that if revenues are involved, the first vote has to happen in the House because all bills of that nature must start in the House — it was just reiterating the Constitution.
I think Thom Hartmann lied to me, deliberately. I never expected that from him.
I was listening on WWRL and I felt a *little* bad for the confused guy that called in to Randi Rhodes. He obviously trusted Thom Hartmann to tell him the truth (and do some of his thinking and research for him). I don’t listen to his show very often, but this incident makes me less inclined to listen at all. 😦
Just got this tweet from TIME.com. It’s a “photo-card” to POTUS..I know ya’ll got photos of our President on lock, but I figured ya’ll would enjoy this like I did.
ETA: The pics of early life with him as youth, and with Michelle and the weeMichelles are the better one. The political ones are meh.
He looks like Sasha in pic #5. Or she looks like him. purpose of #10 is what exactly?,
No purpose other than race-baiting and provocation on the part of the media. It never ends….
What a great timeline of his life AND his achievements. History will be kind to his accomplishments. I pray the economy gets better so he owon’t have to put up with the BS of the Teabaggers and the media. I think his sense of history and looking at things from above give him a sense of calm that sometimes can come off as aloof when people want rhetorical passion, but overall, I think he has a good handle on perspective.
Creating JOBS JOBS JOBS. His next legacy.
Good morning everyone,
Inspired by P M Carpenter’s typically cogent analysis, the following letter was sent to the President a few moments ago. I also sent a copy to VP Biden, Leader Pelosi and Leader Reid requesting that they read the letter and discuss it with the President.
Letter to the President on 3 August 2011:
Dear Mr President,
How can Congress take a vacation while FAA inspectors are asked to work the month – without pay?
How can Congress take a vacation while the jobs crisis – you know, the real crisis is allowed to get worse? Tens of thousands of airport construction workers are on idle because of Congress’s inaction.
So, the hostage takers (aka the Radical Republican T-Party), having created a serious, self-inflicted denigration of the credibility of the USA now go on vacation.
Those same T-Party folk – who campaigned on ‘jobs’ and have only managed to lose jobs while asking others to work for nothing and charge their work expenses to their personal credit card – now take a months paid vacation.
Mr President – please call a special session of Congress to convene immediately to begin addressing the REAL crisis in America – 9.2 % unemployment and all the resultant implications.
The last people to be receiving government pay checks, let alone taking a paid vacation at the expense of tax payers, are members of the Legislative and Executive Branches of Our Government.
Thank you for your exceptional leadership and endurance,
Yes.We.Can. … DO.More.Together!
Bobfr …great letter, and precisely the right questions we should all be asking.
Off to parrot these same points to the WH, and letters to congressional leaders as well.
Bob….always on the mark! Another brilliant letter. The level of hypocracy is stunning….I’d sure like to find some town halls to go to and call these guys out in front of a crowded room! Great letter.
Thank you, Sue and desertflower!
I’ve also been forwarding deaniac’s fine analysis and the ‘Edited For Clarity devil in the details’ analysis to folk.
You are a PR Machine! Love what you do!!!
I appreciate your letter to the President Bob. The only problem with him calling a special session of Congress is that he would have to stay in Washington. No time off with his family. To chance to relax in the non stop drama. And if he even thought about looking at a golf course, he would be crucified. No human can keep up with the pace he’s been keeping and stay healthy.
And that’s where we the people come in. We need to be more active in harrassing these welfare recipients that now occupy the legislative branch of government. President Obama can only do so much by himself.
It would be nice if some one had the power to just shut down all of the airports then watch how fast Congress would return to vote on the clean bill.
Wow — that’s just great, even by your already high standards.
Press Secretary Jay Carney briefs the jackals momentarily 12:00 PM EDT.
Special guest today is Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on the failure of the FAA legislation. I hope this will be the new model for bringing attention to the obstruction and intransigence of the Republican Party.
I wonder who will be the first jackal to question the optics of President Obama doing fundraisers and horror of all horrors, actually celebrating his 50th birthday.
For all you twitter-ers out there, looks like some teabaggers have started up the hashtag #obamabirthdaypartygames ; as can be predicted, their attempts at wit are painfully bad and uncreative. I wonder if some folks from our side can co-opt this hashtag and show ’em how ‘clever commentary’ is done.
Tell these nasty baggers to focus instead on their GOP welfare recipients in congress who are collecting their six-figure annual welfare payments, while squeezing the economy of jobs and robbing American citizens of their livelihoods.
I can’t believe they’re going on vacation while thousands of people’s livelihoods (not to mention our convenience as travelers) is put at risk. This administration needs to BLAST them, not just politely encourage them to do their jobs. The public (continually) needs to be shown the utter destructiveness of the current GOP.
These republicans in congres are not President Obama’s personal hires. They are elected officials who were hired by the American people to do the people’s work. They are just as accountable to us as they are to anyone else and along with the administration, we also have a responsibility to harass them and flood their offices with calls, emails, faxes, tweets, etc.
They are petulant and childish. I’ld rather ignore that crap and come from a positive direction. There is so much to celebrate in President Obama…we should really be tooting our horns.
Good Afternoon folks,
I’m sick of seeing someone like Pat Buchanan given a platform where he is allowed to spout off his hatefilled rhetoric.
We have to do something to get him and his way of thinking off the air once and for all.
He had the nerve to justify his horrible remarks and they let him do it. How do we boycott cable news and make enough of a stink where they will actually send Pat Buchanan and Mark Halpern to Fox news where they belong?
What do you think about turning cable news off for one symbolic day maybe September 11th?
Any ideas how to get their attention? Thanks
As long as people watch these shows they will continue to impose their will on the public. One day won’t make any difference.
I am in your camp Leslie, I think the MSM is a very large component of the dysfunction in our political process.
I think one day isn’t enough…..and yes I think an organized boycott could have an impact. I have already personally boycotted them and ultimately cancelled our cable. Today I left several messages requesting MSNBC require Pat Buchanon make a full aplogoy to President Obama and America on air, on Rev Sharpton’s show. I called Starbucks and registered complaint and renewed my commitment to not purchase their products. I reminded them that this began with Halperin demeaning the President on the same show. I then called MSNBC and advised them that their programming practices were impacting the sales of their corporate sponsor Starbucks.
If anyone has ideas as to how to go further…I am all ears, willing and able.
NAN has a march/rally August 27th…..jobs is usually one of their central issues. This could be an opportunity to enter the public square, make our voices heard and support both the President , the issues facing the middle and poor classes, and the minority communities who bear a disproportionate brunt of America’s economic pain.
OH, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. PRESIDENT!!!!!! LESLIE
Here is a sobering read on the damage that the Republican Party manufactured crisis has already caused.
BECOMING THE TARGET OF INTERNATIONAL MOCKERY
There’s some irony to this. The right has been obsessed for some time with the notion of “American exceptionalism,” and yet, these same conservatives have been eager to make the United States an international laughingstock.
As we talked about the other day, I don’t know if Republican lawmakers are aware of any of this. Worse, I also don’t know if they care. But American leadership on the global stage rests on certain pillars that took generations to build and strengthen — credibility, reliability, stability, the integrity of our institutions, sound judgment. The Republican Party severely undermined these pillars in the Bush era, most notably in areas of foreign policy and the use of military force. The Republican Party has now severely undermined them again.
The world has been watching and thanks to GOP madness, the sanity of the world’s greatest superpower is very much in doubt.
In politics, disputes come and go. Some missteps, however, are difficult to forgive.
Thank you ladyhawk. I not only watched the entire thing, but I sent it off to others.Good job finding that. I was taken by the way the “media” framed their questions…which was why the Senators and Hoyer called them all out. Proof positive they are off base and one sided. Thanks so much for that.
Opps! Meant to reply to hopefruit! I can’t listen to Randi and type at the same time, I guess! Sorry ladyhawk
OKAY I URGE EVERYONE TO WATCH THIS 35-minute SEGMENT if you have the time and means: IT INVOLVES A TESTY EXCHANGE BETWEEN SENATE DEMOCRATS AND THE MEDIA on the issue of the FAA bill game playing by the Republicans.
This clearly shows that the senate Dems, Harry Reid, Barbara Boxer, Hoyer, and Schumer are rightfully calling out the Republicans and the media on their unfair and outrageous hostage taking behavior. CSPAN very conveniently and sneakily slipped this segment under the “debt ceiling” headline in order to turn readers off. Click Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer and the others were not playing with these media thugs who tried to change the topic away from the outrageous GOP behavior by focusing on other nonsense. Senator Reid and the Dems kept refocusing on the issue at hand – John Boehner’s nasty and thuggish game playing.
After you click on the link you must then click on a second link under the “video list” that says “Sen Reid and others on the FAA bill” The 35-minute video will commence. Just so you are aware, the media probably doesn’t want anyone to see this.
God. We’ve got to get rid of these repugs. They’ve got to go. We’ve got to make sure that all the teapublicans who gained seats in 2010 lose them and soon. How much damage must they inflict before we trash them? Bastards.
Thanks for sharing, I am glad they challenged the media for their ineptness during the course of this press conference.
Thanks for the link. This really shows how uneducated and clueless the “journalists” are. They just can not get past their republican talking points and their “both sides do it” BS.
Thank you hopefruit…I replied to ladyhawke by mistake. Great link.
Pres Obama is at Good Stuff Eatery taking debt-weary staff to lunch. Includes Gene Sperling, Jack Lew, Nancy-Ann DeParle, Rob Nabors, Reed.
President Obama is such a kind and thoughtful man!
One of the posters on TOAITR (dscandy) commented that her sister’s friend happened to be at the restaurant when PBO came in. The ss guy asked the friend “would you please save this seat for someone?” And then in walks PBO!!!!
I have been linking a lot to Andrew Sullivan lately, because he has been in our corner (plus, I like his blog even if I disagree with him).
I found this post heartening. Mind, it applies to favorability, not job approval. But an important metric for the campaign.
Sullivan is a conservative. He is reasonable and argues his points of debate like an adult. You don’t usually catch him with his hair on fire.
As it should be.
Bill Clinton is starting to get the Ronald Reagan revisionist treatment. I was over at Taylor Marsh’s blog and I couldn’t believe what I just read. I’m not linking it here, but if you dare, go over there and read the article, “Bill Clinton Played Hardball and Won, Obama Paid Ransom and America Lost”-I kid you not, THATS THE TITLE!!! I mean really I would have chose Clinton over Bush in 1992 and Clinton over Dole in 1996, but REALLY?!,you are going to say the guy who passed DADT, DOMA, School Uniforms, etc. is more liberal than President Obama. Kiss my ass on that bullshit.
This is nothing more than a cynical attempt to divide the Democratic party by pitting former Clinton supporters against current Obama supporters. It’s a ploy to get Americans focused off the outrageous TEABAG Republicans who are putting this country dangerously at risk, and instead caught up in some petty contrived “competition” between Obama and Clinton that has no bearing on what’s going on right now.
Bill Clinton does like to keep sticking his nose in – he shouldn’t have commented on how he would use the 14th amendment. Clinton had the benefit of a great economic bubble and basically an administration of no big wars and he still screwed the economy with NAFTA and repealing Glass-Steagall.
StR, I had a different take on Clinton that you did. To me, Clinton was legitimizing the use of it, if President Obama wanted to. He came out before hand. He’s a former President who is still respected. And he said it was legitimate for a President to us it if it was needed. It’s not the way President Obama wanted to go, but I didn’t take it as criticism.
Fair enough. But it also gave the nutroots the ability to hate any deal other than a clean one. “If Bill Clinton said he’d use it, than why doesn’t President Obama walk away from the table and use it as well?”. Because even if the GOP wasn’t bluffing, President Obama had an ultimate out.
The Nutroots profoundly misunderstands the relationship between Obama and Clinton, just as they misunderstand a lot of things. They see it as a rivalry – I see it as collaborative. I strongly suspect that Obama dispatches Clinton to give an “opinion” to test the reaction out there. President Obama has essentially rehabilitated Hillary Clinton’s image (and to a certain extent Bill’s) and forgiven her since 2009 , and I do think they are grateful for this. At one time both of them were considered toxic to the point where Al Gore and Bill are not even on friendly terms. Now, they are treated as statesman/stateswoman and remembered fondly.
Totally agree. Bill Clinton is always eager to give his advice. Given the current political environment, given the fact that the wounds of the primary battle have never completely healed ( and in my opinion it’s an important factor in President Obama’s difficulty with his party AND with the media because the Clintons have so many friends an allies …) Clinton should know better and keep his mouth shut. I wish he would keep his ego in check. His presidency was a PICNIC compared to what Barack Obama has to deal with. Rahm Emmanuel, who was in the inside for both, said it very clearly. If Clinton was as good a man as Barack Obama is he would never miss an occasion to point this out. But he’s so happy to be put on a pedestal… Jeezzz I so cringed with this “President of the World” stuff on Hardball… I think the ad is still on the web page of Matthews show…
I have to say I’m not surprised by the Clinton nostalgia that is being peddled. I’m concerned by it and while showing respect for the good things Bill Clinton did , we have to push back hard against people who want to make him a liberal hero.
I don’t think it was appropriate for an ex-President to weigh in so recklessly and publicly during such a delicate and turbulent time. I don’t think Clinton was dispatched by the President to add legitimacy to the 14th. Not the way he said it. It felt to me like so much of the PL, saying what he would do with the clear implication that the POTUS was doing something wrong by not following his advice. It was inappropriate at best, in my opinion.
It helped drive the meme that if the 14th was invoked all our problems would go away. there is no way Obama wanted that message and he shouldn’t have. The legal challenges alone would not have calmed the bond markets and we still would have had serious economic consequences. To do so calls into question if the POTUS has the right to order borrowing, that is the purview of Congress. A nightmare scenario that would have accomplished nothing. The government would have ground to a halt. It would have been catastrophic.
It was Bill Clinton doing what feels good with no regard for the consequences. Again.
Now if we want to challenge the debt ceiling law in court on 14th Amendment grounds, I’m all for that. Let it wind its way up the courts in an orderly, thoughtful fashion.
Bill Clinton can, with all due respect, STFU.
May I say as an Obama supporter from early on, I would have been so over 2008 if Hillary had been elected. I would have supported my Democratic president and done everything I could to see her succeed. The hatred from her camp of followers, fostered during the primaries by the Clintons themselves, has soured me on them forever but I would have shelved my personal feelings and done anything and everything I could do to help her succeed. She’s a fine SoS but I think we had better talent for that job, frankly. I’m glad he reached out to heal the wound. I’d like to see Bill Clinton tell those followers to get behind our Democratic president, instead of saying Obama should use the 14th and in essence shove it down their throats, daring them to fight him in court. That’s a school yard brawl, not governance.
Clinton is still jealous. He can’t stand the fact he is out of the lime light. He tries to undermine President Obama whenever he can. It is not like President Obama was not aware of the 14th amendment. This is the same Clinton who asked Paul Ryan to call him about his social security plan. Clinton behaves like a dougle agent What reputable person would do that. Clinton wants to be the only two term democratic president. Could you guess, I don’t trust William Clinton.
Taylor Marsh is the mother of all PUMAs and spewed nothing but hatred toward PBO during the primary and the general. She lives in a Clinton fantasy world and is a complete waste of time.
Her b.s. made it to gos today via slinkerwink. Of course.
Hamsherite Puma Slinkerwink posted the exact same garbage over at Daily Koch. She’s so damn transparent to anybody who is paying attention. She’s too young to have been politically aware during the Clinton Administration, so she just reads about something or hears a fact like “Did you know Clinton stared down the Republicans on the debt ceiling and they blinked” and she run a fluff piece on how brave, corageous and strong Clinton was. I don’t know if I’m more embarrassed for the shallowness and utter transparency of her arguments or for her twitter/facbook followers who actually believe she is anything other than full of shit and trying to use them to become the next Jane Hamsher. Her pandering replies to their gushing over her diaries surely sets their hearts aflutter “Slinkerwink talked to me, I’m going to screencap this page and set it as my wall paper”.
I started to comment to that diary and I just left. Congress was completely different then. In fact, let’s remember that because of the Telecom bill, we have a complete monopoly of the airwaves.
Oh, why preach to the choir. You guys get it.
I don’t know how you can stand to read Slink or Hamsher. I joined DK in 2009, read a couple of Slink’s diaries, looked at FDL and that was enough for me. Chipsticks has exposed Hamsher for who she is.
They are not contributing to the solution. They won’t be remembered. They are not important.
I got sucked back in when Swing State Project was bought by Kos and moved to the site.
I started at dkos right at the time that the Hillary people ‘went on strike’ and left kos. We supported Obama throughout the primaries and the election. dKos understood that the enemy was Republicans. So I can only assume that the Hillary supporters who went on strike, came back. They were probably always out there spewing this hate, it just wasn’t on my radar when I first started reading blogs.
St R, I voted for Clinton and did campaign work for him so I have a question for the young woman (whose name I prefer not to type) if Clinton played hardball and was so successful at it what happened to health care reform in his administration???
Bill Clinton is a brilliant but reckless man. Sometimes recklessness works for you, sometimes it gets you impeached. Barack Obama is a very different sort. Equally brilliant, but much more sober and deliberate, which is exactly what is needed in this era. I admire Clinton, but I prefer Obama.
well put and I agree.
Stinker-Wink is an ignoramus. PERIOD.
Let’s not forget the Telecom Bill of 1996 that turned over the airwaves to the right wing. The Gramm bill in 1999 that led directly to the collapse of the economy in 2008. Welfare reform.
The only time Bill Clinton is progressive is when he’s campaigning.
If Bill Clinton had thought about how his personal actions would affect the country, we never would have had W.
Bill Clinton is now the progressive hero to slinkerwink and the other firebaggers.
If HIllary had done exactly what Obama has done, they’d be cheering her political prowess. Un-freakin’-believable.
ans clinton did not have to deal wihth the tea party
Nixon, and even Ronald Reagan are getting the same treatment.
(early) Happy Birthday, Pres. Barack Obama!!! I’m sure you’ll get some sugar from your girls when you get back to DC tomorrow!!
(early) Happy Birthday to Pres. Barack Obama. I’m sure you’ll get plenty of sugar from your girls when you get back to DC!!!
I also want to wish an early Happy Birthday to your wonderful President Barack Obama, he deserves a relaxing and happy day.
I hope all here who are having House Parties to celebrate PBO’s 50th birthday have a great time. I so wish that I could contribute towards his re election campaign but I shall be celebrating his Birthday with my family and friend who is staying with us. We celebrate every year and this year is no exception. I am ignoring all the negative bullshit around and concentrating on the greatest man who has ever held the office of President of the United States. All I can say is let the haters hate as is their want but in the end goodness shall prevail and President Obama will come out of this looking good. He is light years ahead of those blinkered biggots who can not see beyond their hand.
God bless President Barack Obama
SIGH 🙄 ………Think I will take a break from the BLOGS. Too much pessisism for me. There is a HUGE backlash over this deal coming form all angles cause once again the PREZ has outsmarted everyone in the ROOM. You won’t see it SPUN that way in the MSM though. See Ya’ll!! Have a nice and productive day. Obama/Biden 2012!!
I have to join you. Tonight it has all overwhlemed me and my heart aches at the pettiness, divisiveness and self serving nature that is on full display in our culture.
President Obama has my complete faith, trust and support.

Hey DesertFlower that’s the comment I found on DU with someone with the same user name as yours, I know you are two different people.
Shut the front door! THAT IS NOT ME!!!!! Thanks for showing that to me….whoever that poser is…they have been busy with the 1000+ posts! That has to be bogus…I notice they ALL say that. Thanks, Me4Obama. Let’s listen to Randi:)
Almost Randi Rhodes time!!!!!!!!!!!! noon – 3pm pacific
randi talking about how Pat lied on Mourning Joke about the “your boy” comment. Wow. what a fricking liar!!!
Desertflower thank you thank you THANK YOU for the link. I’m getting a chance to listen to Randi and she is (excuse the language) FUCKING FANTASTIC!!!!!!!! 😀 I sent her a tweet the other day for her take on the debt deal and for calling out the PL and emoprogressives who kept saying President Obama had screwed America. I’m going to be sending her a tweet again.
Desertflower, if you want to go read the comment yourself it’s on the thread titled,
“oh SHIT!!! Keith O was on fire tonight with the special comment, did you see it, then that’s the reply Desertflower gave.
You know what, I just really don’t want to argue with someone like that…rather just let you all know that isn’t not me, and move on. Thanks for letting me know where I could find it though
“I’ll tell you what the president doesn’t need. He doesn’t need liberals nipping at his heels over shit he can’t control. Go ahead. Make the case for Keynesian economics. Lord knows, someone needs to talk some sense around here. But stop asking the president to do things he can’t do and blaming him for not spending all his time asking for things that will be simply and flatly denied.
It’s not only tiresome, it’s destructive.”
Bravo Booman! Bravo! http://www.boomantribune.com/story/2011/8/2/214920/4633
That’s the distinction that’s lost completely. Well-said.
Booman is a reality-based progressive. He’s also an intelligent, analytical and pragmatic thinker. I don’t always agree with everything he thinks or says, but then again, total agreement 100% of the time is unrealistic and unhealthy. But Booman has this President’s back and is not afraid to stand up to the extreme left nuttery AND the Teathuglicans.
Thanks for the article and the link Bobfr. I just tweeted it. 🙂 More people have to be made aware of the truth.
FYI – CNN is listing PBO’s fundraiser tonight on their livestream schedule:
Oh thanks Meta. I will share this. Yes, yes, yes. 😀
Thanks for this meta. Please give us TOD’ers another heads up when the time for the event draws near. 😀
I called the WH comment line to thank the President for his negotiations on the debt deal, wish him a happy birthday, and to say that I am fired up to work for him. The lines are busy so they must be getting a lot of calls.
Comment line: 202-456-1111
“I’m so disgusted,” he told a reporter about the protracted negotiations. “I mean, no, I don’t know what you do in the face of that kind of intransigence. So, my heart does go out to the President. He is dealing with a lot .
Those words where spoken by, take a deep breath!!!!! MATT DAMON. I guess the bitch slap he received at the WHCD put some sense into him.
Get out! Glad to see he is waking up to the reality.
See, this is what Obama accomplished — he stripped the Republicans of any cover they had about who they are and what they are willing to do in the country in order to defeat Obama.
They. Are. Dangerous. More Americans know that now than did 4 weeks ago. And because there’s a second tranche to the debt reduction deal, we will continue to have this conversation and educate the American people.
McConnell spewing that he’ll be sure his side of the commission is full of crazies just proves the point, doesn’t it?
Matt Damon? Wow, did he get hit on the head or something recently?
I would imagine that He’s hoping to be selected to play the role of Secretary Gates or one of the Seal-six in the OBL movie….
Isn’t that interesting? Compassion is a very good lesson.
was that in an article or is there video of that?
WHOAH!!! it’s official. he is now forgiven.
Russia has issued a commemorative stamp for PBO’s 50th:
America, wake up and give this GREAT MAN the respect he deserves. Thank you Russia.
EXACTLY. My heart hurts for the way this brilliant man and great president has been treated day after day. But I will always hold great hope that he will be celebrated by the world for decades and centuries to come for the true gifts he has given all of us.
I think the haters and naysayers realize what a historic presidency this is. They realize that President Obama is a giant amongst men and a brilliant LEADER and that’s why they try sooo hard to drag him down into the mud. But he is the titanium man and it nevers dents his armour. It just goes to show how well loved he is all over the world that Russia takes the time out to commemorate his birthday. Pretty freaking cool! HAPPY BIRTHDAY in advance President Obama. You rock!
what a lovely thing to do. Hope they sent that gift to PBO signed: From Russia, with love 😉 hehe 😆 — I love that movie. 🙂
President Medvedev did call him this morning to wish him a Happy Birthday!! I think they have great admiration and affection for each other.
And as long as we’re on the subject of loveliness, check this out:
I love it when the WH can use small U.S. based businesses for projects and events.
Thank you Meta for the post; I made my $50 donation to celebrate President O’Bama’s B-day! I donated $13 to celebrate Malia’s B-day too and will continue doing so for the whole family and our country.
When is (grandma’s) Ms. Robenson’s B-day? I’ll make a donation honoring her too on her B-day.
My donations go to OFA of course.
THANKS for your donation, Maritza!!
Mrs. Robinson’s birthday is July 30th.
Thank you Meta for the info.
WOW – very nice. Thank you Russia for recognizing our great President.
Something tells me this won’t be the only commenorative stamp POTUS face will ever be on.
MUST READ! http://www.examiner.com/liberal-in-chicago/republicans-fit-the-profile-of-a-classic-abuser
This is a very relevant analogy. And a tough dynamic to up end. I believe the author is also right that reclaiming powers means voting these jackals out of office.
Heard Randi read this……. it’s so true. We need to make this go viral someway.
Totally. now we’re talking about birth control…these crazies make me want to scream.
I hear that PBO is trying to find a way to force R’s to deal with this FAA crap….even BEFORE THE END OF VACATION!
Do you have linky goodness for that?
I saw it in a tweet from Mark Knoller:
“In fact, Pres Obama says all of Congress need not return if the leaders agree to pass the FAA funding bill by unanimous consent.”
I’ll try to find a more definitive link.
I heard it on the radio as I was listening to Randi Rhodes…I don’t know if it was CNN or what. You can check there:)
Found this http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44006072/ns/travel-news/
Carney has Sec. Lahood with him at the daily presser today.
PLANE AND SIMPLE: President Obama says he’s called leaders in Congress to urge them to resolve the impasse at the FAA.Obama said at a Cabinet meeting Wednesday afternoon that members of Congress don’t even need to return from their break to deal with it, but instead can solve it “through unanimous consent.” He called it a “self-inflicted wound that is unnecessary.””I made calls to the leaders and am urging them to get this done, but this is, as I said, not the kind of situation that is complicated,” Obama said in response to a question from a reporter. “All they have to do is do what they’ve done 20 times since 2007. There’s not a big issue in terms of drafting the legislation … just do what they’ve done in the past to make sure these folks are on the job.”
No link yet.
I hope Randi Rhodes is correct — she’s saying that from the time the commission makes its recommendations and the time it’s voted on, the President can come in and negotiate changes to the ‘recommendations’, revise the recommendations before they come to a vote a month later. Anyone know if that’s accurate? Because that would indeed be AWESOME.
I love her, she’s a major advocate that we should celebrate. But she has said repeatedly today that the Big Three are sequestered, without saying that the commission can do whatever it wants to whatever it wants. The Big Three are protected in the initial cuts and in the trigger, which is still great but they are not off the table for the commission.
Let me tell you. Randi has read that whole bill…she would NEVER say something that wasn’t true. Never. Not how she does things. Did you hear that someone took her to court over something she said….the court sided with Randi because she was factual.
Deaniac’s summary from his reading of the fact sheet, says entitlements and revenues are on the table for the commission. I just emailed Randi to ask her so I’m sure.
If I’m going to tell my very nervous senior friends and family that there is no threat to the Big Three, as negotiated by the President, I just want to be sure I’m right.
Randi is HUGE on accuracy, I hope to God she’s the one who’s right.
“Deaniac’s summary from his reading of the fact sheet, says entitlements and revenues are on the table for the commission. ”
entitlements on the provider side, not on the benefits side.
There you go! Randi talking about the importance of facts! Trust her:)
PBO and Miche made Vanity Fair’s Best Dressed Couples List, according to Politico. I won’t link it but this is what it says:
Looks like Vanity Fair has forgiven the president for his 2009 dad jeans moment. The mag put both Barack and Michelle Obama on the International Best-Dressed list this year.
The mag teased the list online on Wednesday, writing that it was the Obamas “first appearance together on the Best-Dressed Couples list.”
The better together list is not to be confused with the lists divided by gender, which the first lady has graced for the past four years.
Does anyone know if the Senate fully adjourned so Obama could make recess appts if necessary?
here’s what Matt Damon said it’s also from politico:
Last week, Ben Affleck briefly became part of the conversation about the debt ceiling. And now his longtime buddy and fellow actor Matt Damon has weighed in on the debate.
“I’m so disgusted man. … I don’t know what you do in the face of that kind of intransigence. You know, so my heart does go out to the president. He is dealing with a lot,” Damon told video journalist Nicholas Ballasy on Saturday. The actor, who’s rocking a shaved head these days, was in Washington to take part in the Save Our Schools March.
Asked is he supports tax increases for the wealthy, Damon said, “Yes, the wealthy are paying less than they’ve paid in any time else, certainly in my lifetime. …It’s criminal that like, you know, so little is asked of people who are getting so much, I mean, I don’t mind paying more. I really don’t mind paying more taxes.”
Damon went on to call the tea party “completely intransigent” in the debt negotiations, explaining: “They are absolutely willing to drive it all off a cliff.”
