Washington Post: “Today, government at all levels consumes 37 percent of the total economy or GDP. If Obamacare is allowed to stand, government will reach half of the American economy.” — Mitt Romney, economic speech, June 7, 2012
This is a startling assertion by the presumptive GOP candidate, which he has made in several forms in recent weeks.
David Corn of Mother Jones first spotted it when Romney made a victory speech in New Hampshire, arguing, “With Obamacare fully installed, government will come to control half the economy, and we will have effectively ceased to be a free enterprise society.” Corn quoted a number of economic experts finding fault with Romney’s reasoning, such as former Ronald Reagan advisor Bruce Bartlett saying “this analysis is so stupid it is hard to know where to begin.”
FactCheck.org then weighed in when Romney had tweaked the language somewhat, but also found it wanting, saying it was “a pure partisan fantasy” and “patently false and misleading.”
With such harsh reviews, one would think that Romney might drop the assertion from his speeches. But now a new iteration has appeared, so we will examine it.

Bloomberg: Employers in the U.S. said they planned to boost hiring in the third quarter, a survey showed.
Manpower Inc. (MAN)’s employment index for the period from July through September climbed to 11 percent, the highest reading in four years, from 10 percent in the second quarter, the Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based, staffing company reported. The measure was at 8 percent a year earlier.
For the first time since 2008, employers held positive outlooks on hiring in consecutive quarters in all four regions of the country and in all industries. The figures may ease concern that the job market is faltering after Labor Department data showed employment rose in May at the slowest pace in a year.

Morning everyone 😉 I’m about, oooooh, five days behind on answering emails, but I promise I’ll get around to them asap. Thanks to you all for getting in touch. Things are still a bit bonkers busy on the work front, so I haven’t been able to chat the last few days, but hoping to get back to normal soon-ish.
Can’t wait to hear the President speak today, CNN and CBS have his 3:45 and 7:45 speeches in their live streaming schedules.
Morning, brave hearts. xoxo
Morning Sarah, morning Arnie, morning everyone. I’ve missed you all the last few days, have you been behaving yourselves?? 😕
Good morning. I’m being good, I promise.
I’ve been very, very good, Chips, mostly because my computer hasn’t let me do much more than lurk! I’m still good when I can de-lurk! It’s all good. Good morning to ya!
😆 So Jacqueline, you’d have been bold if your computer allowed – is that what you’re telling me?
Uh, yes. Quite. In fact, I’m controlling myself right now, because you’re lookin’!
P.S. Quit lookin’! (Just kidding.)
Chips? If you have a minute, could you define ‘ behaving ourselves’? Just kidding! 😆 mornin’ all!
Pamela – I love how we’re all telling Chips, “Just kidding” ! (Methinks she knows everybody better than that!) Mornin’ !
It’s hard to define, Pamela – the key thing is keeping your clothes on! 😆
Huh? lol
YIKES! oh dear…..
I missed you and I missed Snark….Knoller was having a meltdown yesterday…..haha.
Another Knoller meltdown?? 🙄 I’ll have to try and wake Snark up soon, he’s a lazy bugger. Hiya ChristiMTL!
Sorry to say, I was misbehaving a little last night.
But my fellow TODers set me straight.
As I feared. You left a right mess too for me to clear up this morning:
Disappointed in you Japa, but not altogether surprised.
Drowning my sorrows.
Sober up young man, there’s work to be done!
😀
heheeee
Congrats on 1st, Sara!
First?
Whoops, guess not. Congratulations and good morning, Sara and all.
Mornonfg TOD. Second?
Guess not second. Congrats on 1st Sara.
Good morning all.
Good Morning Chips, TOD, lurkers, etc! 🙂 Congratulations to both Sara & Arnie on #1, and Jackie on #2!
Thank you kindly.
Hey Hope, good morning! You weren’t that far off after all yesterday….did you see that it was ”shrinks”….I would have never guess, never.
WOW..Interesting…you know what made me think “doctor?” when he said the “huge waiting room!”
I thought about you right away…..like omg Hope was pretty close……lol……..as usual, I was way off!…..I’m so bad at guessing.
Good morning everyone. Congratulations Sara Chumley Carter on being first.
The employment data flies in the face of the doomsaying CW that gets repeated again and again. Good news.
Morning everyone…..
When context isn’t king
By Steve Benen
——————————
Obama wasn’t “touting” the fact that government employment had fallen on his watch; he was criticizing the factor that has held back economic growth. The Romney campaign sees a contradiction between the May and June quotes from the president, but the context obviously shows the two comments are making the same argument.
This isn’t a close call. BuzzFeed conceded yesterday the Romney campaign took Obama “wildly out of context.”
So, here’s a question to ponder: did the Romney camp deliberately try to deceive reporters and the public, or is the Romney camp so confused by the basics of economics and jobs policy that it didn’t realize the two Obama quotes are complementary?
——————————
http://maddowblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/06/12/12183282-when-context-isnt-king?lite
It’s both! And they live in a Pro Business/wall Street mentality.
Today’s email the Robnry camp sent to reporters, Obama can’t win because he will not get enough White Voters! And that the Presidents scorched Earth policy is not working.
I shit you not.
And Halpein thinks this email means that the GOP has confidence.
I think it means they are insecure!
Imagine if the PBO campaign sent out an email saying Romney couldn’t get enough non-Morman voters.
Right! They are trying to change subject off of Robney losing Hispanic vote by 40!
Romney better take another look at those PBO rallies. There’s a lot of White voters there.
Good Morning Chips. Good Morning TOD. Congrats Sara.
I turned on the TV to watch Stephanie Miller, but the TV was tuned to MSNBC. Whom should I see but Chuck Todd who was asking Stephanie CUTTER what had she and the Obama Administration learned from the President’s kerfuffle last week (…….the private sector is doing fine….) She said, “WE LEARNED THAT THE PRESS AND MITT ROMNEY TOOK THE PRESIDENT’S STATEMENT OUT OF CONTEXT!!!. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Chuckie looked like he wanted to choke.
I.
Love.
Her.
BOOYAH!
Good morning, Chips and TOD family,
I hereby resolve to get employment by the end of this month – which happens to coincide with the unemployment of Dylan RATigan!
Hope everyone is having a good morning and congratulations Sara!
That is a very good goal! We’ll all celebrate with you.
NYTimes, Nate Silver, and Chuck Toad will call New York a “swing state” since PBO has slight edge of 25 pts, 59-35. Today’s poll.
😆 He’s doomed!!!
I mean, if New York has “swung,” well then. Something, something. (None of it will be true, but Chuckie will swear to it.)
Well, NY *is* kind of a swingin’ place…! 🙂
It’s way too close…..lol
I made mistake on those poll numbers. It’s actually 28 pts. 63-25 . http://www.pollheadlines.com/election-polls-6-2012/ny-2012-senate-gillibrand-63-turner-25-siena-college-06032012-06062012.html#.T9dBWu2tAH8.twitter
They did try to go after her initially with Jodi Kantor, the silly rumors about her buying $50K worth of lingerie, the 1700 calorie meal, etc, etc, but all of this backfired because we O’bots, the people, Twitter briggade, etc pushed back aggressively and promptly.
The ”whitey” tape in 2008….proud of her country for the first time……etc……they went after her big time in 2008…..no way they can’t do that this year….no no no….
The more rabid elements of the GOP (just about all of them) will try to go after her. They can’t help themselves – they’re just twisted and evil.
And by this…he means the media will ignore it. THE RACE MUZ BE CLOOOOOSSSEEEE
I’ve heard it all over the media. This is quite damaging. He called Mitt out by name and said he was doing a bad job trying to appeal to the teabutts. They are throwing in the towel on Mitt and looking forward to 2016.
And yet many will vote for Mitt, no matter who he is (or, in his case, isn’t). Unbelievable.

Will Romney change his narrative?
Not a chance of course.
IT’s so funny how the press tries to fashion a narrative out of thin air. The Obama had a horrible turrible week crap they pulled last week is not showing up in any of the polling (state or national). Reminds me of the “secret weapon” Ann Romney—that never came to past AND the Obama is doomed because Biden came out ahead of him with gay marriage AND the Catholics will abandon Obama because of the HHS ruling. Take home message…the press aint worth a damn.
Oh yes, that’s all we heard….the horrible week…….mmmm…50% in Gallup…..
A horrible week based on one quote taken out of context.
That’s why I don’t understand folks who hang onto every word uttered by the MSM and then do the ‘oh lawd help us’ routine. If we don’t know them (the MSM) by now, we will never, ever, ever know them. Why the wasted energy is beyond me.
DETROIT (TheStreet) — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says the government should sell off its GM (GM) shares soon, even though that would involve a $16 billion loss.
The story, posted Monday, said Romney would “sell the stock quickly if he wins the White House.”

still trying to make money for his investor friends, I see. So who’s in the best position to buy up all those stocks?
The President will raise mire than 3.6 million, at tonights fundraisers.
And Joe is going to UTAH to raise mullah-

UTAH?
Was monitoring a bit of Romney’s Florida event while waiting for Holder’s Senate hearing to start. Connie Mack introduced him and Mack was given a very cool reception. It’s on Obamacare so I expect he’ll repeat his usual lies. I’m not going to listen to find out. Funny though in his introductory remarks while talking about all the people looking for work, he cited a “teacher” he met who was looking for a job. How did that happen?
Grassley is getting all hot and bothered about Fast and Furious. But Holder should get better treatment than what he gets in the House hearings.
Grrrrr. I so wanted to see PBO in Baltimore tonight. First I hesitated when I should have just dived in and bought the $250.00 ticket. Then two days later when I finally decided to buy one ALL the tickets at every price level were ALL SOLD OUT. I got on the waiting list and hoped something would open up but no bites. I guess the other way to look at it is that Maryland if FIRED UP for PBO!!!!
“ALL the tickets at every price level were ALL SOLD OUT.”
You must be wrong about that Donna, I keep reading there’s no enthusiasm out there. 😆
That’s ok Donna, I’m holding a campaign fundraiser called “The Next Best Thing”. It’s for people like you who missed out on seeing PBO in person. There’s no waiting in line, nor getting on a wait list. All you have to do is click on this link and you’ll have The Next Best Thing to being there yourself. PS: There is no price, you just pay what you feel it’s worth, for being a part of The Next Best Thing!!
https://donate.barackobama.com/page/outreach/view/2012/cookemom
Ummmmm Ms. Cookemom, I plan to give you a nice Birthday donation this Friday. You see in order to get on that “waiting list” I still had to make the $250.00 donation 😉
Oh yeah Chips he was so not able to raise any money in these here parts. He sold the darn place out cause folks are just not interested 😆
Oh you had to pay for the waiting list? Oh my, I didn’t know that. Hmmm….
Oh, Donna, I feel your pain! I got the invite but couldn’t figure out how to clone myself, leaving the clone @ work & all!
Morning family….Oh, P L E A S E!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Romney Reverses Course, Claims It’s ‘Completely Absurd’ To Say He Doesn’t Want To Hire More Teachers
There is something mentally wrong with this man. I mean it.
Well he’s partly right. This statement just released by Robme campaign on what was said: “It is absurd to say anything about what he said, cause he stands by what he said, whatever it was he said. He said so himself. It goes without saying that what is said by him, just shouldn’t be said.”
Nice.
You mean apart from being a pathological liar with sweating issues?
Betty meets her President. This pic says it all!
She absolutely adores him. Great pic. Chips should put it up there.
Just did amk – Hopefruit and myself clearly have magnificently similar minds!
Excellent. It’s a trifecta of mind meld. 🙂
“Hopefruit and myself clearly have magnificently similar minds!”
PBO just sent a text saying that’s the whole damn truth and that’s what his ’12 campaign is all about 🙂 🙂 🙂
Woooooooot! 😆
How sweet……why was she there ?
hf, how did you post a pic directly here ?
I got it from someone’s tweet 🙂
(I interfered with Hopefruit’s comment, amk, and used my pic-posting super powers)
Ah, the good old favoritism/nepotism/girlsstickingforeachother.
Exactly 😆
You know i thought something strange went on there for a minute. Because I know I posted someone’s tweet, and not the straight pic!
You thought you had magic fingers, right? 😆
I did!
Ha! Ms. White is rapt in this picture. Now where have I seen that look before? Oh that’s right at every single event our President gives. 🙂
That’s right donna – she IS rapt! 🙂 🙂
And with her hands clasped together over her heart! Keeps the energetic cycle flowing…. Opening that heart center wide! Oh my goodness! What a wonderful photo!
I love this photo. Both so adorable. And you can see the love Betty has for him. I can so relate.
Chris Rock on Jimmy Fallon tonight to speak about Robme and PBO. Well, this oughta be good.
Hope chips/tod’ers will post a youtube linky later.
This analysis means absolutely Nothing.
This is so sophomorish, that it can’t be, it just can’t come from a trained Political Mind. And yet…-
http://thepage.time.com/2012/06/12/fall-preview-2/
What utter nonsense. I had to laugh.
He is unbelievable sophomoric in all of his analysis. It’s not deep nor insightful. What it is…is if a 16 year old watched CNN for an hour and wrote an analysis. As if a debate is not a conversation?!?! You can get away with that talking points BS on an interview or a commercial, but in a debate they expect you to expand on your thoughts. And pray tell, WHY is it that the media has not gone after Romney for ONLY doing Fox news. Seriously, when was the last time he was on a Sunday show? And they treat him with kid gloves. I remember when PBO hadn’t gone on FOX…and those morons had the nerve to have a “Obama watch clock”. Seriously? Jake Tapper, Chuck Todd, even Fox News Ed Henry has not gotten an interview yet, but they are so deferential to him. Going on Fox and Friends to gab with morons who are further to the right than you are is not an interview. Neither is hamming it up with Kudlow on CNBC…the same guy who was going to run for the senate seat on the Republican ticket in Connecticut.
Because the Left is Stupid, Too

Any administration wants to leave certain distinct impressions with different audiences. They will all want to make their own core constituencies happy, while convincing the media and the broad middle of the electorate that they are more pragmatic than ideological. They all want to make their political opponents fearful of opposing them. They will all want to look tough on defense, even if some administrations are most interested in making diplomatic breakthroughs. So, it’s not easy to know what any administration or president “really” feels about things. Making things more complicated, each administration inherits a bunch of ongoing programs and problems from the prior administration, meaning that that a huge portion of their initial agenda involves stuff they didn’t even initiate and might not want to continue. Finally, whether an administration is mainly ideological or mainly pragmatic doesn’t matter a whole lot. The balance of powers and the rules of the Senate assure that no president can do anything overly ideological unless they have supermajorities in Congress, and even that might not be enough if their own party is divided.

I am very happy that these election supervisors are sticking to their guns. If only the fucking media isn’t covering for gop, the thugs will be in gutter.
Any of our AZ friends out there (df?) the polls are open.
Morning, hopefruit:) Unfortunately, I don’t live in Tucson….the good people of Tuscon will make this happen, though. Feel it in my bones:)
Oh that’s right. I stand corrected! Anyway I am just as hopeful about this as you are. The MSM’s silence is a good indicator that it’s not “bad news for Obama/DEMS.”
That, and most of the mailed in ballots have Barber ahead. I think I read that he already has like 58% of the votes….something like that, anyway. Jesse Kelly is batcrap crazy
ThinkProgress: This number SHOULD be higher! But they’re STARTING to get a clue…
49 percent of voters believe Republicans are “intentionally stalling efforts to jumpstart the economy” in order to win the White House in November, according to a new poll by Public Policy Polling.
This how Willard treats the press – and they accept it and just move on. But they can’t accept and move on when PBO sneezes or burps.
Nope! He Re-directs every question…
For example: why is the Sky Blue?
Well, Obama is a nice Guy but His Policies on Clean Air Act is giving us Blue Skies, we want Grey and Black Skies!
LOL!
That is exactly what he does. He’s a dirty snake!
I read the AP article about his secrecy and how the press has little access to him, so why do they keep covering for him? I can not recall any Presidential election where any candidate, D or R, would get away with ignoring the press, much less have them cheer-leading for him.
And they let him get away with this every single friggin day. Instead they dissect and sensationlize everything PBO does just to try and drive his favorablity down. As much as they try it just ain’t gonna happen. Romney is a low count, sell your soul to the devil, win at all cost, coreless human being. It’s about time our worthless media let’s the public know just that!
2 hints to #NEWSTAINER Emily ….

Actually, I like this. They are starting to get pissed at Romney. First not really giving any press conferences and leaving the reporters to be at the ropeline. Then not answerign any questions. The bosses may still be pushing Romney, but the reporters are starting to get fed up and that will start to show in the actual reporting.
We need to goad them and put them in a spot.
Doing that everyday 🙂

Yikes, what’s happening Desertflower?
Romney reacts:
Actually it should be a hair-pulling pic.
Speaking of hair: I just got your message alleging my Wayne has a “rat-nest on his head”. The nerve of you. Study this photo please:
That is a majestic mane right there, majestic.
yeah, a majestic mane, just that queen of his. All those gazillions of pounds, the guy still shows his widow’s peaks.
That was what the french did to the brits y’day ?

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/06/12/romney-blocked-anti-bullying-guide-over-terms-transgender-and-bisexual/
White he was governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney’s administration blocked the publication of a guide on preventing bullying in public schools because it included the words “transgender” and “bisexual,” according to a new report.
Emails obtained by The Boston Globe showed that a Romney official in the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, which was the primary sponsor of the guide, effectively prevented the document from being published.
“Because this is using the terms ‘bisexual’ and ‘transgendered,’ DPH’s name may not be used in this publication,” then-Deputy Commissioner Alda Rego-Weathers wrote, adding that he had been in consultation with the governor’s office.
“Stifling the guide’s publication was among steps that Romney and his aides took during his last year in office to distance the Republican governor from state programs designed to specifically support gays, lesbians, and bisexual and transgender people,” according to the Globe.
The 120-page guide (PDF) was eventually printed with the terms “transgender” and “bisexual” during Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick’s first term after Romney left office.
“Romney put his own political interests ahead of the safety of vulnerable youth,” LGBT rights advocate Don Gorton explained.
I seem to remember a little “prank” he pulled on a terrified kid in high school……
New Mexico and Colorado are burning. Houses and business’ have been lost. I wonder…does Willard want to tell the people in those states that they don’t need more FF??? From his time as gov:
I somehow doubt those people who have already lost homes and property in these fires feel that way. I would like for Mitt Romney to make these comments while he stands in front of their burnt-out, smoldering homes that once held memories and safety for them.
What they may not realize is that Mitt Romney has a long-standing crusade against firefighters. Salon reports:
In 2004, when the city of Springfield was facing bankruptcy, Romney proposed a $52 million bailout package that included suspending collective bargaining and civil service benefits for the city’s unions, including public safety officers. “He hates us,” Robert McCarthy, the president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts, told the Associated Press at the time. “Unions are what made this state what it is,” he said, but Romney “won’t even talk to us.” Romney spokesperson Nicole St. Peter defended the suspension of union benefits, telling the AP that the “control board” the governor appointed to oversee the city’s finances “needs maximum flexibility to restore Springfield’s financial footing.” The Democratic-controlled state legislature eventually overrode Romney and preserved the bargaining rights, though the control board remained controversial in the city.
It’s worth noting that stripping the union rights of firefighters was farther than Wisconsin Governor Walker was willing to go — he exempted public safety workers from his reforms. But when Walker’s fellow Republican Governor John Kasich of Ohio went after police and firefighters’ union rights, he was rebuffed by voters in a referendum last year.
http://crooksandliars.com/karoli/romney-should-explain-colorado-and-new-mexi#comments
Also ask him why America had to bring in Canadian firefighters to help us.
There are currently 20 fires raging in this country.

Romney Confirms He Will Deny Insurance To Millions With Pre-Existing Conditions If Obamacare Is Struck Down

I am astounded that anyone would vote for this man. If the republicans didn’t have Obama-Derangement-Syndrome, I think 2012 would be a repeat of 1964, when Goldwater carried only 6 states. That was the first election after I turned 18, and it was wonderful the way Johnson ‘ran the table’.
Go Holder, tell them GFT.
Did Cornyn ask Alberto ” I don’t recall ” Gonzales to resign ?
Jessie Ventura has another book out…..he calls it DemoCRIPS and ReBLOODlicans
I guess the CRIPS wear Blue and the BLOODS wear Red. He says they are at War. Red States vs Blue States..
And everything is a conspiracy, everything!
Didn’t this brave ‘fighter’ run off to some south american country just after one term as govnor of some gawd awful red state ?
He was Gov. of Minnesota and he lives in Mexico 6 months during our winter.
But yes…he is a conspiracy theorist. I just got a chuckle from the title.
He lives off the grid, so the Government does not know where he Is. Oooooooooooo!
There is a catch. Find out if you can.
Great News. Let’s see if walker will still walk his union busting walk.

A contributor may designate his or her contribution for a particular participant. The allocation formula above may change if following it would result in an excessive contribution. Contributions will be used in connection with a Federal election.
Bush and his lingering mess:
Bruce Bartlett tallies it. The damage this single president did to the core of the country’s fiscal health – and our ability to weather a storm like 2007 – 2009 – is hard to find parallels with. Money quote:

Tweeted CTgirl. Good find.
Excellent tweet!
PPP has Willard leading by 2 points in N.C. now with 20% of AA’s supporting Willard. That doesn’t seem to be believable.
🙂
it was also racist that AAs were shunned and considered irrelevant by his Morman faith until the late 70’s, well after Mitt reached adulthood.
PPP is slipping. They were way off in Wisc right up until the end.
They are saying it’s because of the gay marriage stance. Really?
This is one of those polls that doesn’t disturb me too much. 2% is well with the margin of error. The 20% of AA supporting Romney is quite possibly part of the same sex marriage backlash, but that is something that I don’t expect to mean anything come November. Third, PBO doesn’t need NC to win, although I still expect him to win it. In fact, on election night, if he wins NC, I will consider that a predictive moment.
BATTERY BREAKTHROUGH: A123 — a lithium-ion battery maker that was awarded nearly $250 million in stimulus funds but has laid off workers amid other financial woes — will announce a technological breakthrough today, The New York Times reports. “The success or failure of the new technology may well determine the fate of A123. It will also render an early verdict on Mr. Obama’s broader push to promote electric cars and build a domestic industry to develop and manufacture advanced batteries to run them.” NYT: http://nyti.ms/LOzgvD

The money question …
#FORWARD
Bobfr, That is a great question. I think you are talking about big bucks. Norquest probably raises money from groups such as the Koch brothers, Art Pope, the Chamber of Commerce, libertarian groups, and corporations. I have heard call-ins on CSPAN ask him, and he will not answer. Luntz is paid by FOX and probably the RNC and individual campaigns. I’ll bet they both make millions a year, but we will never know.
Hi Bobfr, you twitter legend you!!! What kind of responses do you get when you go on your “Tweet Missions” ? Have any of the “evil empire” ever responded to you? What about the good guys? Axe? Messina?
No responses but my list of followers seems to grow … 🙂
My objective is to keep stuff in their faces and enable others to do so by simply RT’ing …
Cheers!

I don’t do much but retweet. I tweet here and there, but mainly I retweet. I’m assuming it’s reaching a larger audience all the time. Thank you for all you do, Bobfr
Oh, one of them, Ed Henry, (@edhenrytv) answered (lame) and he didn’t not enjoy how I turned it on him so he quickly blocked me 😀 😀 😀
Fool doesn’t realize that all my followers see every one of my tweets to him and they can RT, etc. By now, he’s probably had to block a bunch of folk 😀 😀 😀

Smug…oh yes…..I don’t like him
I’m mad at what Republicans (with the help of alleged Democrats like Bill Clinton) have done to decent commerce in this country. I live in Chicago and I have the choice of creaky old AT&T for my internet. Why creaky? because shareholders and CEO’s come before the customers and dividends are paid instead of improving their infrastructure for the 21st century.
My only other choice — literally — is Comcast. They screwed up the order. They screwed up appointments. And now they tell me I have to wait a month for a return of my $100 deposit. Get your brain around it: I gave them $100 which they have had use of and I have no product that I bought. I cancel because I cannot get them to get anything right, and I have to wait for the return of my money. I’ve spent no less than 8 hours on either the phone or online trying to deal with these idiots. Now, they are staffed locally and well trained as to how to be nice to a customer. that’s wonderful — but if they’re incompetent in delivering the product I ordered, then let me tell you where they can shove their politeness……..
It’s the great City of Chicago, for God’s sake. The ‘free’ market doesn’t give you ‘choices’. Public utilities used to have to operate in the public interest. In fact, Alexander Hamilton’s original vision of what would become the modern corporation included a provision that corporations had to behave in the public interest in addition to making profits. That has been destroyed by 100 years of Supreme Court decisions — every time there’s a new regulation it is litigated based on this body of law that a corporation’s fiduciary responsibility is to the stockholder, NOT the customer.
Starting with Reagan, there is no longer any enforcement of the anti-trust laws. So what we’re left with a recombination of mega corporations who can fight every regulation based on the ‘fiduciary responsibility’ of the corporation to the shareholders (read: deregulation of the banks and the media — thanks Bill Clinton). There is no longer any public interest activity on the part of corporations. Any consumer protections are fought by Republicans.
And. There. Is. NO choice.
Okay. My rant for today.
BOISE, Idaho — Former Republican U.S. Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho was sued Monday by federal election regulators who contend he misused some $217,000 in campaign funds for his legal defense after his arrest in a 2007 airport bathroom sex sting.
Federal Election Commission officials said in their complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., that Craig should repay the money and pay a fine.
The FEC contends the three-term U.S. senator’s campaign account, Craig for U.S. Senate, paid at least $139,952 to the law firm Sutherland, Asbill and Brennan in Washington, D.C., and $77,032 to Kelly & Jacobson in Minnesota for legal services related to his guilty plea to disorderly conduct.

CALL TO ACTION: Here’s something for the TOD Twitter-Brigade to disseminate to the masses! This important story from the June 2012 AARP Bulletin really needs more exposure! People need to be aware that they can stop the lying political ads!!!

Be a Super PAC Watchdog
YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT MISLEADING POLITICAL ADVERTISING
http://www.aarp.org/politics-society/government-elections/info-06-2012/be-a-super-pac-watchdog.html
When the fire broke out, there wasn’t a moment to spare,” said 78-year-old Ohioan Marlene Quinn in a Web video last October. “If not for the firefighters, we wouldn’t have our [great-granddaughter] Zoey today. That’s why it’s so important to vote no on Issue 2.” Within days, her video had been repurposed by a group favoring the Ohio ballot initiative to make it appear she supported the law that she wanted repealed. “She’s right,” said the deceptively edited ad. “By voting no on Issue 2, our safety will be threatened.”
What happened next is a tale of the system working. Because that misleading ad was made not by a candidate but by a third-party group, a category that includes political parties, interest groups and super PACs, Ohio TV stations had a right to refuse it. When they learned about the duplicitous editing, a number of them did exactly that. Their actions remind us that although, with few exceptions, broadcast stations have to air ads sponsored by federal candidates, they can reject outside groups’ ads or, if they choose to air them, insist that they stick to the facts.
This year has seen an unprecedented amount of third-party advertising. By May 10, 534 groups organized as super PACs reported receiving $204,323,416 and spending $99,803,597 in the 2012 cycle, according to OpenSecrets.org. The level of inaccuracy in the third-party presidential ads has been high. As an Annenberg Public Policy Center study shows, from the Iowa caucuses through the Wisconsin primary, almost 57 percent of the $41.1 million deployed by the four highest-spending third-party groups was devoted to 19 ads containing misleading claims.
The deceptions were of the sort that shift votes. Imagine a potential supporter of Mitt Romney accepting at face value the false implication in an American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees ad that he engaged in Medicare fraud at a company owned by his Bain Capital firm. Or imagine a person who opposes abortion mistakenly believing a pro-Romney super PAC’s false allegation that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich supported legislation facilitating abortion in China.
It’s not hard to imagine a voter, misled by such claims, rejecting a candidate she would otherwise support.
Because they can charge more for third-party ads than for those by federal candidates, stations earn a windfall airing them. As CBS President Les Moonves told an entertainment law conference in March, “Super PACs may be bad for America but they’re very good for CBS.” But by taking seriously their right to insist on the accuracy of third-party ads and regularly debunking deceptive political ad content, stations can translate some of those profits into protection for the public served by their stations. That is what a new campaign by the Annenberg Public Policy Center (APPC) of the University of Pennsylvania is asking them to do.
Go to the “Stand by Your Ad” page at APPC’s FlackCheck.org and email your local station managers. Encourage them to protect their viewers from air pollution. The process takes less than two minutes. More than 900 of the 1,047 station managers have already heard from their viewers. Please make your voice heard now.

I post the FlackCheck.org link about twice a week. It’s something that we can all do personally, it doesn’t take much time, and it is the definition of grass roots, IMO.
