‘How Republicans Sabotaged The Economy’

Foreign Policy: Imagine, for a moment, how difficult it would have been to land a man on the moon if half of the U.S. Congress had believed that the sun revolved around the earth. Or consider how the War in the Pacific might have progressed if half of Congress had still thought the world was flat. Or whether polio would have been eradicated if half of Congress insisted that the best cure was bleeding using leeches. Unfortunately, this was the situation the United States in January 2009, when Barack Obama assumed the presidency. The nation was trying to climb out of the deepest economic hole since the Great Depression, but the Republican Party had about as scientific an approach to the economy as medieval alchemists did to the periodic table.

Sometimes, mistaken ideas can be harmless or even humorous. But in a crisis, they can be downright dangerous. By the time Obama took office, Lehman Brothers had failed, and the Treasury was already trying to prop up banks and other financial institutions to prevent a complete collapse of the economy. In addition, the nation had undergone a tremendous fiscal transformation. Back in 2000, the United States had expected to rack up more than $4 trillion in budgetary surpluses over the coming eight years, but the Bush administration enacted tax cuts that brought the tax burden for upper-income Americans down to the lowest levels since the 1940s. These cuts, combined with two expensive wars and a short recession, sent the nation into deep deficits. The new president faced an enormous task to revive the economy — one that he could not complete without Congress’s help. Together, they would have to protect Americans from a prolonged economic slump while attempting to chart a course toward a more fiscally responsible future.

Not everyone in Congress was in a mood to cooperate. Stung by their electoral defeats and facing Democratic domination of both houses, the Republicans did everything they could to slow the new president’s agenda, from filibusters and procedural votes to delayed appointments and partisan bickering….

BRIDGE BRIEFING: Romney’s Record On Veterans

Romney’s Budget Plan Cuts $176 Billion From Non-Defense Discretionary Spending By 2016, Including Veterans’ Health Care. According to the Center on Budget And Policy Priorities, “Non-defense discretionary spending would be cut by $176 billion in 2016 — and $1.7 trillion through 2022 — in addition to the deep cuts already reflected in the budget baseline as a result of the caps in the BCA and the appropriations bills passed during 2011. This category of spending covers a wide variety of public services such as aid to elementary and secondary education, veterans’ health care, law enforcement, national parks, environmental protection, and biomedical and scientific research.” [Center on Budget And Policy Priorities, 5/21/12]

Romney Proposed Cuts To Veterans Disability Compensation. According to the Center on Budget And Policy Priorities, “The cuts that would be required under the Romney budget proposals in programs such as veterans’ disability compensation, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for poor elderly and disabled individuals, SNAP (formerly food stamps), and child nutrition programs would move millions of households below the poverty line or drive them deeper into poverty. The cuts in Medicare and Medicaid would make health insurance unaffordable (or unavailable) to tens of millions of people.

14 reasons why this is the worst Congress ever

    By Ezra Klein

This week, the House of Representatives voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act. On its own, such a vote would be unremarkable. Republicans control the House, they oppose President Obama’s health reform law, and so they voted to get rid of it.

But here’s the punchline: This was the 33rd time they voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Holding that vote once makes sense. Republicans had promised that much during the 2010 campaign. But 33 times? If doing the same thing twice and expecting a different result makes you insane, what does doing the same thing 33 times and expecting a different result make you?

Well, it makes you the 112th Congress.

Hating on Congress is a beloved American tradition. Hence Mark Twain’s old joke, “Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.” But the 112th Congress is no ordinary congress. It’s a very bad, no good, terrible Congress. It is, in fact, one of the very worst congresses we have ever had. Here, I’ll prove it:

That’s fine. The President is the commander-in-chief that presided over the capture of Osama bin Laden, and the toppling of Hosni Muburak and Moammar Ghaddafi, all with minimal drain of troops and treasure.

If a veteran chooses to admire Romney more, a man with no foreign policy experience and a man who dodged the Vietnam draft while rooting for that war to be waged, and a man who is using Bush’s foreign policy advisers, then so be it.

Just got word that a wonderful person passed away yesterday. His name was Bud Silberman. I worked with him at my first library. Then at my current library, I work with his grandson. Then when I was deployed to a new library in the system to help get it up and running, I worked with his daughter. And his wife is treasurer of our Friends group. He was from Brooklyn, and had an amazing, wonderful life. And when PBO was elected in 2008, he said that it was the first time in years that he’d been proud of his country. Here’s to you, sir. You can rest now.

I just love watching PBO’s arrivals in new cities, every chance I can get. The officials on hand in every city are so excited to have him there and all the regular people are lined up to see him and it’s (presumably) a high point in their lives. Yet to PBO, it’s just routine and yet he makes it seem like he’s delighted to be there and shake hands with these particular people and run across the tarmac to the crowd each time. The locals are always amazed that he does that and yet, I always expect him to! Of course, this time was extra special to watch because FLOTUS’s brother the BB coach was there to greet him too! JPMorgan Chase settles with credit card customers for $100 million

JPMorgan Chase & Co has agreed to pay $100 million to settle litigation by credit card customers who accused the largest U.S. bank of improperly boosting their minimum payments as a means to generate higher fees.
The class-action settlement resolves a three-year-old case stemming from Chase’s decision in late 2008 and 2009 to boost minimum monthly payments for thousands of cardholders to 5 percent of account balances from 2 percent.
It comes as JPMorgan, like many of its main rivals, addresses a wide range of litigation over its banking practices, such as whether it conspired to overcharge retailers on card transactions, or manipulated benchmark interest rates.

Obama held assignments on the Senate Committees for Foreign Relations, Environment and Public Works, and Veterans’ Affairs through December 2006.

In January 2007, he left the Environment and Public Works committee and took additional assignments with Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.[89] He also became Chairman of the Senate’s subcommittee on European Affairs.

As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Obama made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa.

For a person who complains when he is attacked and says it could be all about the issues, one would think Mitt Romney would not refer to the president as “corrupt,” but that’s just what he did while speaking to the VFW when he said, “A healthy American economy is what underwrites American power. When growth is missing, government revenues fall, social spending rises, and many in Washington look to cut defense spending as an easy way out. That includes our corrupt president.” The Las Vegas Sun reports he meant to say “current president.”

I was half listening because it was too much for my nerves, I must have missed it.

VFW hears two very different perspectives

    By Steve Benen

In Romney Land, it makes sense to condemn timelines in Afghanistan, then promise to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan “by 2014.” In Romney Land, it makes sense to blame a Democratic president for budget cuts demanded by congressional Republicans. In Romney Land, as American prestige and credibility is on the rise around the globe, it makes sense to say America’s image has been “diminished.”

But it was this line from his speech that I found especially hard to stomach:

“This is very simple: if you do not want America to be the strongest nation on earth, I am not your president. You have that president today.”

Think about that for a second: in Mitt Romney’s mind, as of today, the United States is no longer the strongest nation on earth. He felt comfortable leveling this attack against American strength to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, no less.

VFW is a strange organization. From what I’ve seen they are a lodge for old men who like to wear hats and talk about war experiences. Notice the make up of the organization…..old white men. Young vets do not join that organization. My son would never think of joining it, even my husband who is a Korean War vet would never think of it. They must be placated and made to feel important every year, but always vote against their own interests.
This is funny…..Mitt spoke to the NAACP first, and we all know how that turned out, then the Vide President spoke. The President spoke first to the VFW, then Mitt spoke today. The VFW is not a big vote getting organization. Someone from VoteVets is trying to set them straight on Twitter, but I doubt those old guys even know what it is. Tomorrow the President goes to the Urban league, Mitt won’t do that.

These old guys probably want the “fed’rul gubmint” out of their lives too!!! They all draw social Security, Vets’ retirement benefits and are on Medicare. This is mean, but the faster they die off the better for the country. President Obama is very kind and complimentary to them. I don’t have to be.

AG Holder is holding a press conference right now (CBS) along with city officials of New Orleans about new policies being put into place to reform the police department there–after a long investigation. One even thanked President Obama for his hard work in helping New Orleans come back. He will be there tomorrow–addressing the Urban League.

I would like to caution some about reacting so strongly to the reports about the “warmer reception” that mitt the serial liar reportedly got from VFW.

    notice who is reporting these?

also remember that the media got their memo earlier to push this theme for the day? why are we surprised when the MSM does what it has always done which is to push rightwing talking points?

of course the people who are pushing this anti-PBO theme are expecting us who support PBO to be critical of the veterans in these “reports”. they will then turn around and say PBO-supporters “insult” veterans.

and the outrage will feed on from one or two obscure comments – we know the drill here so please remember that

The opposition will try to wring hope out of not-much-at-all. We need to stay positive. The ## especially the Electoral College give our President a tremendous advantage.
A poll or a paidoff pundit here and there cannot change facts on the ground.

Yes and if his solid leads in PA and MI hold up the election is PBO’s. We need to remember there is no national election or campaign. There are state electoral elections.

    • 151 Lorraine
      July 24, 2012 at 5:49 pm

As far as I can remember the election is a state by state effort; and President Obama is leading handsomely in those states with 333 electoral votes to Romney’s 190 something.

A federal appeals court upheld a South Dakota law on Tuesday that requires doctors to tell women seeking abortions that the procedure causes an increased risk of suicide.

The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the provision is constitutional by a vote of 7-4. The seven judges in the majority were all appointed by former President George W. Bush.

      July 24, 2012 at 5:40 pm

the doctor’s will never tell the women that. They can make it a requirement all they want but unless they are going to set up cameras in the examination room and have a government official standing there while they are having the discussion this is a waste of time and hopefully tax payer dollars didn’t go into pursuing this garbage.

I listened to both speech (barely could contain myself from retching at Mitt’s hate filled tirade) but Romney was not received more warmly. There was one guy close to the microphone that would yell loudly but that was about it. The organic applause were about the same. Actually, at some point people were clapping out of politeness for Romney. Side note WTH is up with Romney? All he does is bash, bash, bash. Obama this, Obama that. I frankly have no idea what he would do, except it is the opposite of whatever Obama is doing.

Side note WTH is up with Romney? All he does is bash, bash, bash. He can’t do anything else. He can’t run on his record as an outsourcing pioneer. Or his 47th out of 50 job creation record. So being the rich bully grown up he can’t do anything else but carpet bomb his opponents with negative ads.

Here’s the thing. During the debates he has to debate the President face-to-face. And contrary to the weak, vulnerable opponent Romney fantasizes the President is, he hasn’t really had to deal with the actual President face to face yet.

I am going to enjoy that day.

OK, this is off topic but here’s what some folks are doing this week: 10,000+ bike riders crossing Iowa (approximately 472 miles, give or take) in July heat and humidity. And is is the 40th year they’ve officially been doing it! We call it RAGBRAI (Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa).

Here’s our current coverage: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/ – top of the page link.
    Here’s our Wikipedia listing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ragbrai
    There’s even a Twitter hashtag of #RAGBRAI.

We’ve been known to get quite a few politicians in the past – I thought Mitt’s missionary bicycling skills could be useful here, but thankfully we haven’t seen him. When I say “we”, of course I don’t mean “me”.

This is very simple: if you do not want America to be the strongest nation on earth, I am not your president. You have that president today.”

I have already planned to no longer frequent Chik-Fil-A. I have a number of good friends, co-workers, and loved one who are gay. Any business that would willfully discriminate against people I love are no good to me. If they are willing to openly discriminate against one group of people they will be okay with doing it to other groups and I don’t need to spend my money there. My money, my choice. Even if I wasnt’ gonna stop, I’m def stopping now. No one lies about “The Muppets” and gets any of my money…lol.

This sign was in a Chik-Fil-A today. This is a lie BTW. The Jim Henson Co parted ways with Chik-Fil-A over Chik-Fil-A’s CEO comments on gay marriage. Rather than being upfront with their clientele they posted this sign as way of explanation of why they won’t be having anymore Muppets toys.

    New Obama ad?

So this ad is in addition to “Choices” where POTUS spoke directly to camera? I think the Obama strategy is to put POTUS upfront since whatever policy disagreements, moderates and independents still like the POTUS personally.

I don’t understand why everyone is getting upset about Romney. He is a natural born liar even those in the media know this. They just want a close election (something the might get in percentages, but not in the electoral college) and will sweep Romney’s lies under the rug until they get to big to cover up. Romney is a pathetic juvenile who spews hate and lies for a living. He doesn’t have a plan other than take up back to the future with Bush tax cuts, no healthcare for millions that need it and repealing women’s rights. We should be grateful when Romney bashes President Obama that lets the voters know he has no plan from which to work with.

The President made an unscheduled stop at the Gateway Breakfast House… The neighborhood greasy spoon is known for its huge portions and great service. He greeted diners and bantered about what he was going to eat and how everyone was doing…

President Obama sat at a table with three veterans… They appeared to talk about health care issues and expenses and at one point the president said emphatically with a smile, “That one we can do right away. You heard it from the Commander in Chief.”

The President managed to get in a bite to eat as well. What did he order? A cheese sandwich, split pea soup and iced tea. (Onlookers said he didn’t finish the soup.) … http://www.nwcn.com/home/?fId=163596366&fPath=/news/local&fDomain=10202

Folks, less than 24 hours ago, our very own lovely Ms. Chips posted 6, count ’em 6 pictures of our POTUS getting mobbed by VFW vets (including the”old white ones”) after his VFW speech yesterday including getting a poster from one of them as a present. Go back to the This and That thread from last night. Are you going to believe your eyes or the tweets from Repug reporter and our lamestream media about Mittens’ was better received. Come on. Go back and look at those pictures again, take some deep breaths and calm down. Please and thank you.
