Willard’s London Trip … An Olympic-Sized Calamity

****

The Guardian: …. Mitt Romney has told London it is not ready to host the Olympics. The statement has drawn catty rebukes from the highest levels, i.e. Prime Minister David Cameron….

…..  Cameron was asked about the comment this morning. He sounded insulted. “We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world,” Cameron said. “Of course it’s easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere.”….

….

…. It is unknown whether Cameron objected in person to Romney’s assertion that London appears unprepared to host the Olympics.

Whatever Cameron said, Romney did not return to his theme of his host country England’s near-sure impending international embarrassment. Instead, in a rare reversal of perspective, he showered praise on the 2012 Olympics effort.

****

“D’oh”

….. barely having exited the threshold of the prime minister’s residence, the American candidate blurts that he is now in the club with British intelligence…..

…. For our American readership, this isn’t like bragging you just met David Petraeus. The British take on the national secret intelligence service comes with an extra-heavy dollop of the whole secret thing…

Good luck, Romney handlers: this is only stop No. 1 on a three-stop international tour. What will he say in Jerusalem?….

Read the full Guardian blog here, it’s a hoot.

****

Telegraph: Romney is now addressing the press outside Downing Street… rather strangely he just said it was a thrill to “look out the backside of Ten Downing Street and see the Olympics.” Odd choice of words and proof that Britain and the US are divided by their common language.

Now, if I remember correctly, the word backside is /was a dirty word in my day when my island was a British colony. ” Me backside!” was something you said when you were startled or surprised. I just saw a clip earlier of PBO visiting 10 Downing Street when he was still Sen. Obama in 2008. He mentioned going out with the Prime Minister through the back of the house and how the view was lovely but the Secret Service people (Brit and US) wouldn’t let them walk farther. Romney’s comment seemed to me an ungainly way to echo that remark.

Has anyone seen any of the media running calculations on how much it cost to fly them and their security detail and the press that’s following them?

As someone pointed out somewhere yesterday, Romney is just keeping his private equity/consulting/takeover personna in place because he doesn’t know any other way to act.

Treat everybody as if they are stupid and incompetent and you are there to save them from themselves. That is how he has been his whole live and he has no ability to make any changes.

It works with people who tend to think they are really in need of his brilliant business sense, but it doesn’t work when you are trying to make friends and influence allies.

Nobody in companies Bain has taken over would ever dare to say something like what Cameron did. Nobody would dare to challenge his purported expertise the way Obama has. Nobody would dare to ask about his financial history, that was his job to ask theirs.

He has no reservoir of experience to call upon to edit his language or actions to fit into this new world he is experiencing.

“Not content with upsetting his British hosts, Mr Romney has now also managed to enrage the travelling American press corps, who pay tens of thousands of dollars to follow him around the globe. After his meeting with Ed Miliband, the Republican presidential challenger apparently took questions only from British reporters.

The gaffe-prone Mr Romney is so rarely made available to these media “embeds” on the trail that his campaign has been nicknamed the “Mittness Protection Programme”. So his decision to ignore them during one such “avail” went down predictably badly. ”

Bring over my comment from the previous post, just that I am so glad my President is home safe. I love the receptions he receives in other cities and that he loves to meet with the people, but I do like knowing he is in the White House, in D.C., safe, and has Michelle, Sasha, Malia and Bo, and daily or frequent meetings with Joe Biden, and that business comes to him! And now Romney is over in our mother country messing up our good relations with the U.K. and who knows what will happen next? Oy vey!

He does not have enough influence or credibility to cause much havoc. After this trip to London and both feet in his mouth at once, no one will take him seriously. He succeeds only in showing his true colors, and what he really is, unacceptable as a world leader.

He’s managed to collect 2m dollars from Barclay’s while over there, however. Though Barclay’s was given particular hell about it, running a fundraiser for Romney instead of working on a fix for their huge financial problems.

I love this. These are the words of someone who sees the value and strength in a community of people working together to make a safer, more prosperous (in the truest sense of the word) and healthy environment to nurture the next generation. President Obama takes this seriously.

      • July 26, 2012 at 1:10 pm

My favourite quote from the Bible is Jeremiah 29:11, and whenever I feel discouraged or like my life isn’t going the way I had hoped it would, I repeat this to myself over and over again. I always think that to “prosper” really means to be able to fulfill my potential, not just financially, but with all my talents. This is what I think a community should do for a child. This is what I think the President was talking about.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”.

Team Obama To Mark 100 Days Until Election With 4200 Events

President Obama’s campaign plans to mark 100 days until the election with a massive grassroots effort this weekend. From an Obama campaign email to reporters Thursday:

[T]he campaign is planning more than 4,200 grassroots events in states across the country. This weekend’s efforts will be branded around First Lady Michelle Obama’s new grassroots organizing initiative called “It Takes One,” which asks everyone to commit to taking at least one action to help reelect President Obama – from registering one more voter to recruiting one more volunteer to anything else that helps the larger effort. The weekend will include events focused on voter registration, recruitment of new volunteers, and gaining commitments from undecided voters to vote for President Obama, among others.

IT’S ROMNEY WHO SHOULD BE SACKED

Romney Plays Loud American Tourist in London

    ———————————–

Romney tried to make amends. “Of course there will be errors from time to time, but those are all overshadowed by the extraordinary demonstrations of courage, character and determination by the athletes,” he said at a press conference, Politico reports.

But that wasn’t Romney’s only trouble on a trip that just began Wednesday. The British newspaper The Telegraph reported that a member of Romney’s foreign policy team told him that Obama didn’t appreciate the “Anglo-Saxon heritage” the U.S. and U.K. share. In case you didn’t get the implication, reporter Jon Swaine prefaced it by saying, “In remarks that may prompt accusations of racial insensitivity…” Swaine’s colleague Tim Stanley followed up on the resulting outrage, saying, “Someone on the Romney staff needs to be sacked – fast and publicly.” On Thursday, Swaine reported a Romney foreign policy staffer complaining that Cameron snubbed Republicans on his visit to the U.S. in March. “‘It was unprecedented,’ said one member of Mr Romney’s foreign policy advisory team. ‘It wasn’t just one more visit with the same treatment. It was very different. So why now?'”

I have been thinking of my trips abroad and about us understanding the GOP legislators are nuts these last couple years, but the people in the other countries of the world are judging ALL of us in the US by them. We think the world’s citizens will automatically understand the GOP is whacky now, but they do not. They look at all of us as crazy.
The difference when I traveled during GW’s time in office then during Obama was so evident. Our esteem rose in their eyes. Now I am seeing Romney’s little trip chipping that esteem away. We should all be embarrassed of Romney’s mannerisms. He who is NOT apologetic by his own criticisms of PBO.

Mitt Romney’s London visit is not going well. After insulting the Olympics (a grave crime apparently) and forgetting Miliband’s name, Guido learns that tonight’s fundraiser is struggling to get the numbers.

From that hilarious guardian liveblog on mittbot’s gaffes

London blogger Guido Fawkes reports that organizers of a Romney fundraising reception in the city this evening have slashed the original $2,500 ticket price to $1,000 for “a few last minute guests,” in an effort to drum up participation.

    • 104 amk for obama
      July 26, 2012 at 12:48 pm

Fawkes quotes an email from organizers:

      From: XXXX
Subject: romney dinner…..reduced price for last minute guests has been negotiated

Good news: The Romney dinner in London on Thursday, July 26th is reaching an all time record for a one event fundraiser. In order to get us over the top, we have been allowed to invite a few last minute guests at 10,000 [sic] per ticket vs 25,000 [sic] per ticket.”

We’d like to know the nature of that all-time record for a one-event fundraiser. What’s the data pool? Thursday night events featuring at least one internationally competitive heptathlete?

      Surely athletes get in free.

ALL OUT OF CONTEXT, ALL THE TIME

    By Steve Benen

    —————————————

    Let’s start a running count:

    1. The Romney campaign took Obama out of context in its very first television ad of the race.

    2. When the president told business leaders that U.S. policymakers have been “a little bit lazy” when it comes to attracting businesses to American soil, Republicans took that out of context and launched a series of attacks.

    3. When Obama said private-sector job growth is “fine” relative to the public sector, Republicans took that out of context, too.

    4. Obama said public institutions help businesses succeed, and Republicans continue to take that out of context.

And 5. Obama said Clinton’s tax policies were better than Bush’s, which the RNC is taking out of context.

    http://thinkprogress.org/election/2012/07/26/590521/heavily-edited-romney-video-targets-black-voters-shows-naacp-audience-applauding/

Mitt Romney’s speech at the NAACP was defined in the media by the resounding chorus of boos he elicited from the crowd. Campaign staffers had a different interpretation, insisting that he received “thunderous applause over and over again.”
Reflecting this idea, the campaign’s new video targeting African American voters, “We Need Mitt Romney,” rewrites history by splicing together Romney’s speech with shots of a couple audience members nodding as if in agreement. While Romney received a polite standing ovation when he was done speaking, the video has been edited to make it seem like the audience rose to their feet to applaud him mid-speech.

Was watching Bruce Springsteen at the 2009 Glastonbury festival last night, and he broke midway into his song and preached this:

“We’re here with a mighty purpose in mind! We’re gonna rock the house! But we’re not only going to rock the house, we’re going to build a house. We’re going to take fear and build a house of love; we’re going to take sadness and build a house of joy; we’re going to take doubt and build a house of faith; we’re going to take despair and build a house of hope.”

Needless to say, it’s becoming a piece I’m writing now for TPV.

How can this ever be a contest ?

Or are Americans used to Presidents apologizing for their opponents gaffes in foreign politics ?

    • July 26, 2012 at 1:28 pm

Yes – you know the State Department is going to have to follow the trail of disaster that Romney leaves behind and clean up that mess. How does someone who had anything to do with organizing a huge event like the Olympics go to another country and insult that country’s efforts? Clearly, Mitt probably had little to do with the actual organizing of the Olympics, in order to make a gaffe like that.

For those who love to follow the GOP lead and call President Obama’s minor misstatements a “gaffe”, take a good look. This is what a REAL gaffe looks like!

I was reading about his meeting with the head of the MI6

it is extremely rare for Sir John Sawers, the chief of the Secret Intelligence Service, to share details about British intelligence with a politician who is not a head of state.

The unusual briefing prompted speculation that it was an attempt by the UK to win Mr Romney’s backing for a more interventionist role in Syria if he wins November’s election.

Mr Romney disclosed that the pair had discussed “at some length about Iran, Syria, Tunisia, Libya, as well as Pakistan [and] Afghanistan”.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/mitt-romney/9430076/Mitt-Romney-is-given-his-own-intelligence-briefing-by-MI6-chief-Sir-John-Sawers.html

If it’s extremely rare, why the heck did he meet with that loser…..

”your leaders”……”submit themselves to questions…he forgot to add FROM US”

He was just angry that Romney didn’t ask the US press….he took only 2 questions anyway.

Piers was just glowing about Willard. It was sickening. He said Willard was impressive in making the case that Obama is against biz success and Willard is for it, and it will be interesting to see how that plays out. He said Willard used Rubio as an example, who said when he was growing up they saw people who had more money and never thought that the rich people should give them some money, that they just felt grateful to be in a country with rich people. It was just stupid and dishonest and ugly, and Piers should be getting paid by the Romney campaign.

There have been a lot of questions about fundraising overseas. You can fundraise for a Presidential election anywhere in the World as long as the people donating are legal citizens of the United States that actually make the donations.

In acutality most of our foreign vistors to this blog can fundraise for the campaign as long as the people they solicit donations from are legal citizens (could be Americans Abroad or supporters right here in the USA).

On the OFA blog during the 2008 campaign we had many supporters in France, Germany, Spain and the Bahamas that raised thousands of dollars for the Obama Campaign.

Hint Hint Amk and others… 😉

Can someone here please TWEET THIS!!!!!!!!!! These are Romney’s friends…the crooks and liars.

  47. July 26, 2012 at 1:42 pm

According to the results of our recent tracking polls in Colorado, Nevada and Florida’s Orlando and Tampa media markets, the SEIU / Priorities Spanish-language independent expenditure campaign targeted at Hispanic voters has made a clear impact on the dynamics of the Presidential contest. This, despite the fact that the independent expenditure campaign engaged while Romney was rising in other national and state polls after securing the GOP nomination, communicated on Spanish language media, and delivered a well-publicized speech at NALEO. In each state, President Obama continues to dominate over Mitt Romney among likely Hispanic voters and is performing at or above 2008 exit poll levels; in Colorado he leads by 45-points, 70 to 25 percent; in the Orlando market he leads by 34-points, 64 to 30 percent; in the Tampa market he leads by 33-points, 63 to 30 percent; and in Nevada he leads by 45-points, 69 to 24 percent.

More importantly, these surveys demonstrate that this campaign has had a real effect in framing and discrediting Romney among Hispanic voters, resulting in a clear upward trajectory in Mitt Romney’s negative personal ratings across each of these states. While the impact is visible overall, it is far more profound among those who get their news about politics in both English and Spanish. Indeed, the trends are particularly marked among the consumers of Spanish language news, as unfavorable ratings of Romney have spiked in each state among those who report that they get their news on elections in the U.S. from both English and Spanish sources. Moreover, we see a significant uptick in the intensity of Romney’s negatives; his strongly unfavorable ratings have increased by 10-points in Colorado (from 46 to 56 percent), by 19-points in the Orlando market (from 29 to 48 percent), by 9-points in the Tampa market (from 33 to 42 percent) and by 4-points in Nevada (from 42 to 46 percent). In total, the results of these surveys suggest that Romney’s communications have proven completely ineffective.

  48. July 26, 2012 at 1:42 pm

More on Romney’s charm offensive, with the emphasis on “offensive”, from the “Telegraph” liveblog:

About Ed Miliband meeting with Romney: “As it is he will send a signal that if he’s not quite prepared to shake hands with the devil in his pursuit of power, he is prepared to shake hands with one of George W Bush’s GOP successors, which to many on the Left amounts to the same thing”.

    And…

An excerpt from Romney’s book called “No Apology”: “England is just a small island. Its roads and houses are small. With few exceptions, it doesn’t make things that people want to buy. And if it hadn’t been separated from the continent by water, it almost certainly would have been lost to Hitler’s ambitions”.

That makes it hard on US citizens and foreign leaders. Being a liar is its own problem and is akin to the boy who cried wolf story. My hope and prayer is that Mitt will do his self in and enough of a majority of people will not vote for him enabling PBO to have a second term. The voter suppression work, tons of undisclosed funds to the GOP, potential computer vote fraud and GOP leaning Supreme Court will not offset the real results handing the election to Mitt,

The Obama campaign is marking 100 days until the presidential election by holding more than 4,200 grassroots events in states across the country, campaign aides say.

The events for the 100-day marker, which falls on Sunday, will be “branded around” first lady Michelle Obama’s new grassroots effort called, “It Takes One,” which asks supporters to do one thing — such as registering a voter or recruiting a new supporter — to help the president’s reelection campaign.

    • July 26, 2012 at 1:55 pm

      Here you go:

The Commission on Presidential Debates reveals the formats for the fall’s four 90-minute debates.

First presidential debate (October 3, 2012, University of Denver, Denver, CO)
The debate will focus on domestic policy and be divided into six time segments of approximately 15 minutes each on topics to be selected by the moderator and announced several weeks before the debate.
The moderator will open each segment with a question, after which each candidate will have two minutes to respond. The moderator will use the balance of the time in the segment for a discussion of the topic.

Vice presidential debate (October 11, 2012, Centre College, Danville, KY)
The debate will cover both foreign and domestic topics and be divided into nine time segments of approximately 10 minutes each. The moderator will ask an opening question, after which each candidate will have two minutes to respond. The moderator will use the balance of the time in the segment for a discussion of the question.

Second presidential debate (October 16, 2012, Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY)
The second presidential debate will take the form of a town meeting, in which citizens will ask questions of the candidates on foreign and domestic issues. Candidates each will have two minutes to respond, and an additional minute for the moderator to facilitate a discussion. The town meeting participants will be undecided voters selected by the Gallup Organization.

Third presidential debate (October 22, Lynn University, Boca Raton, FL)
The format for the debate will be identical to the first presidential debate and will focus on foreign policy.

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/07/26/1113809/-Netanyahu-Romney-Lying-About-Their-Friendship

    Bibi Netanyahu told Vanity Fair

“I remember him [Romney] for sure, but I don’t think we had any particular connections, I knew him and he knew me, I suppose.”
~Bibi Netanyahu, July 2012 in Vanity Fair Interview

But, to hear the pathological liar, Mitt Romney, tell it the two were as thick as thieves (no pun intended) while they both worked at Bain Consulting Group in the 1970s (not to be confused with Bain Capital.)
Romney to the New York Times:

ROMNEY: “We [Mitt & Netanyahu] can almost speak in shorthand. We share common experiences and have a perspective and underpinning which is similar.”
In December GOP Debate regarding how America should handle Iran:
ROMNEY: “I’d get on the phone to my friend Bibi Netanyahu and say, ‘Would it help if I said this? What would you like me to do?'”

    Gonna be SOME fun!

Morgan interviewed Mitt and Ann Romney and will roll out the conversation in full on his show this evening.

Romney said he is being attacked for being rich but the attacks won’t work because that’s not the American way.

“There are people who are trying to attack success, and who are trying to attack our success,” said Romney. “That’s not going to be successful. … That’s not America. … We’re an achievement-oriented and -celebrating nation. That’s what lifted us, and will continue to do so. … People want more success, they don’t want less success.”
