A group of progressive Nevadans will be making a trip to Sen. Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) district office in Las Vegas on Friday, and they plan on giving the Senate majority leader a pair of commemorative boxing gloves in honor of his high-profile sparring with Republicans over Mitt Romney’s tax returns.

Reid told The Huffington Post in an interview published last week that an early investor in Bain Capital told him the presumptive GOP presidential nominee didn’t paid any taxes for a decade. Reid’s comments set off a political firestorm, with Romney denying the charge and the Republican National Committee chairman going so far as to call Reid a “dirty liar.” Reid has continued to stand by his story.

James Walsh, a Vegas resident leading the trip to Reid’s office, launched a petition on MoveOn.org’s petition site, SignOn.org, to support the Nevada senator in the spat and to push Romney to be more transparent about his taxes. The former Massachusetts governor has only released one full year of tax returns, opening himself up to charges from Democrats that he’s hiding something. On his petition, Walsh writes:

My Senator Harry Reid has challenged Mitt Romney to release 10 years of his tax returns, like his father did (12 years) and Mitt has refused. As an American citizen, I think it is our right to see how a person who is running for President of the USA has paid their income tax. When he ran for Governor of Massachusetts he insisted that Ted Kennedy release his tax returns. So please Mitt don’t be a hypocrite, release your tax returns.

The petition has more than 35,000 signatures as of this posting. Walsh’s group plans to deliver Reid a copy of the petition along with the boxing gloves.

A little insight, Hans is Bloomberg WH correspondent.

ROMNEY HASN’T CLOSED THE DEAL WITH CONSERVATIVES

The lesson of Mitt’s new attack ads: He still has to win over the right

    BY MICHAEL COHEN

    —————————————–

This sort of mendacity is pretty much par for the course with the Romney campaign, so in of itself lying about Obama’s record is not new or unusual.

What is more remarkable about these ads is how demonstrative they are of Romney’s larger political weakness. These are not the sorts of ads that are intended to appeal to undecided voters, but rather to those who tend to get energized about welfare cheats and attacks on religion, i.e. base Republican voters. Both ads ironically activate Romney’s political weakness with minority voters (those depicted in the welfare ad as working are coincidentally all white) and female voters.

Indeed, what is most striking is that three weeks before he is to be nominated by the Republican Party as their presidential standard bearer, Romney is still focusing his campaign on reassuring conservative voters rather than trying to broaden his message to a broader swath of voters. It begs the question: Will Romney at some point move his message more to the political center, or is he so constricted by his conservative GOP base, which doesn’t fully trust him, that he will campaign for President as a hard right conservative? Increasingly it looks like the latter.

We got that message loud and clear from Ann Coulter’s meltdown. They aren’t backing him because he’s the better candidate or is offering the people anything good. They’re just backing him because their party leadership told them to. It was hilarious.

There’s a right winger who Ed has taken to having on his show. She’s very good at deception and phony outrage – but I can’t recall her name. She was on last night, hyperventilating over the Priorities USA ad with the man who lost his wife after Romney’s Bain closed down his plant. She was asked multiple times by Ed last night whether she thinks Paul Ryan will make a good VP pick. She prevaricated and ducked and dove all over – but she couldn’t support Paul Ryan as a VP pick – claiming that Paul Ryan would shift the conversation to topics that shouldn’t be discussed. I don’t even think she knew what she was saying. To me, that was even more revealing and more dangerous than what the Romney spokesperson said. Everyone knows already that Romney did Romneycare. Everyone knows already that Romney defended the mandate, and thought that Romneycare should be extended nationwide. Not everyone knows that Paul Ryan’s plan is not the “brave” and “courageous” plan that the GOP have made it out to be. Not everyone knows that Romney has sworn to implement Paul Ryan’s plan within his first 100 days. And not everyone knows just how damaging to the middle class the Paul Ryan plan will be! The GOP don’t want that truth getting out there – and they certainly don’t want anyone opening up the Paul Ryan plan for discussion.

One of the pundits (or their guest) said last night that Romney seems to be running to be the figurehead President, and if he chooses Paul Ryan, he will expect Paul Ryan to actually be the head of government – like Cheney was. The whole prospect is frightening.

I was just listening to a caller on the Ed radio show. He’s from North Carolina, makes $10,000 a year and don’t believe that Romney will raise his taxes. He told Ed that it’s just the campaign saying that, but it’s not true. What a sad state of affairs that we live in. Facts mean nothing to some people.

  23. August 9, 2012 at 3:06 pm

Here’s my thinking on the media’s collective meltdown over Dem attack on Bain

The Bain ads were initially simply an irritant to the corporate paymasters and their journo lackey when they first started in March/April this year. They assumed that they would be a passing curiosity with no real holding and narrative changing power.

Unfortunately for them, they did not know that Dems were working on a long game carefully crafted spiral choreography. The spiral or corkscrew choreography refers to the way Dems seized:
    1) The focus on Middle Class from President Obama’s Sept Jobs Act speech & promo
    2) Serendipity of Occupy Wall Street recasting national conversation on Income Inequality 99% versus 1%
    3) The attention & reinforcement that Pres. Obama’s Kansas economic speech in Nov. 2011 targeted Economic Inequality
    4) Refusal of congressional Democrats to yield any ground on Middle Class payroll tax cut extension — w/ $40 paycheck slogan
    5) recess Appointment of Cordray to head Consumer Finance Protection Bureau & NRLB appointments => fighting for Middle Class
    6) Congressional Dems standing their ground on Budget Fights, Did not blink during sequestration compromise stalemate
    7) Steady stream of White house We can’t Wait initiatives plus veterans jobs/welfare initiatives & loudly proclaiming them
    8) The fight over contraception provision was deliberately publicized loudly to focus women voters attention on GOP destructiveness => Democratic Base consolidation of women voters
    9) Pres. Obama’s Gay Marriage statement => Democratic Base consolidation & simultaneous neutering of religious conservative Dems + AA voters
    10) Pres. Obama’s Dream Act Lite Executive order kills Rubio’s dressage prancing on the issue & bamboozling of Latino voters => Latino Vote consolidation

So having laid the above mentioned groundwork Dems have now sequenced their election campaign in an unpredictable order. Bain ads initially focused on outsourcing to perk up the ears of industrial belt workers (i.e. so-called Reagan Democrats). Without Kansas speech and OWS laying the narrative groundwork these ads would not have been that effective. The corporate paymasters did not realize at that time that the bloodstream of the White working class that they have lied to for so long was being infused with truth-telling about Vampire Capitalism. Well Gingrich & Perry did give us a godsend assist when they thought they were inoculating Romney when they introduced Bain & vulture capitalism in their primaries. Instead they laid the groundwork for defining Romney negatively be4 he had a chance to puff himself up

Then Democrats shifted to Romney monies in offshore accounts simply by mining his 2010 tax returns. Romney thought he could use “class envy” plus monthly jobs reports to deflect those and stall answering probing questions. Unfortunately for him Pres Obama knows how to use the calendar to killer effect. The day after the low June jobs report, the devastating “Firms” Ad was released. Firms wrapped up Romney in phony patriotism, vulture capitalism, offshoring money & jobs while raising tax dodge questions in a zinger of an ad. Nobody was talking after that about jobs report (Romney should have remembered what happened to Hilary Clinton in 2008 the night she won the West Virginia primaries by 41% difference. Candidate Obama chose that very night to announce John Edwards’ endorsement with much pomp and pageantry. No one remembered Clinton’s victory).

As the “Firms” ad was simmering along nicely Romney did us all a favor scoring an own goal by traveling abroad where he everyone saw him in all his diplo-disastrous vainglory. He saved us one week of ad $$$.

Then no sooner had Romney’s wheels touched home ground than the Incredible Hulk Harry Reid came with his uppercut blow from left field on Romney paying zero taxes in ten years.

Then wham Bill Burton brings Bain back with a new vengeance reinforcing more viscerally the REAL EVIL that the particular Bain-iteration of capitalism today is unleashing on ordinary people. It is no longer a productive or creative capitalism. It is Dystopic. while congressional Dems get GOP on record voting against Middle Class tax cuts. (Harry Reid is reloading for future delivery)

The corporate paymasters and the MEDIA no longer find this funny because the American people have become responsive to Democrats’ core ideological argument AGAINST the Republican model. People are waking up to the fact that Vampire capitalism is not like the industrial capitalism of Henry Ford, Hershey’s, or the railroad or contemporary tech giants. This is a capitalism that kills people and brings zero utility to society. It is a malignant cancer. The Media is apoplectic because if Dems succeed in fundamentally changing the American narrative about wealth, Middle Class & the mirage of success, then the Permagov class that subsidizes their careers will be rendered powerless. And that is a no no. This is what we are up against.

The Income Inequality narrative that Democrats are laying out is very lethal because it shatters the mirage of the American Dream at its very core. The idea that Americans are an aspiration people is true, but it only holds if ordinary people see an attainable path leading to that Dream. But the focus on Romney and Bain provides the clarifying optics that the path to the American Dream has been nuked by people like Romney.

This argument is placing Democrats on terrain that has not existed since FDR. It is one that according to Bill Burton a few months ago, they were trying hard to find a way to nudge Americans to focus on. It’s hard he said , because polling told them Americans flat out did NOT believe that Paul Ryan, Romney & the GOP budget plans would SERIOUSLY set out to HARM them. They did not believe the planned radical Social Security, medicare changes were true even when told that GOP had voted on those plans.

WE still have a long slog to reach Americans’ minds, but I must say, Democrats up and down the food chain have impressed me. So lets do everything we can to get/retain them in power

Yeah, well send this to Axelrod. That was great!

    • August 9, 2012 at 4:35 pm

      Lovely analysis. Two additional points:
      1. Romney’s only courageous act (enacted against his will, apparently) was Romneycare. He shot himself in the foot by denouncing Obamacare and threatening to “Kill it Dead”. There’s no way that he can appease his rabid base now by trying to move to the center on health care, after announcing so prominently on the steps of the Capital that he’ll be the one to do what the Supreme Court failed to do – within his first days in [fantasy] office. And now, when President Obama and his posse attack Romney for creating Romneycare – the prototype of Obamacare – the right wing loonies go apoplectic, because they can only see it as a slur.
      2. Romney’s never built anything. His money was made making absolutely nothing. Taking people’s pensions. Killing their futures. And so when he tries to take credit for Staples success, the truth comes out about how Staples really only became profitable after Romney left, and that when he sat on the Board, he was a non-executive board member. Then, introduce this potentially illegal question about when Romney left Bain -and he shoots off the other foot. He can’t claim Staples as a success, because then that puts him back in charge of Bain when many of the worst atrocities were committed. He can’t leave Staples out of his story, because then he has absolutely nothing positive to show for his time at Bain, except for his bulging bank accounts as company after company went under.

      In essence – he’s screwed.

Additionally, Romney DID NOT SAVE THE OLYMPICS! The American taxpayers saved the Olympics to the tune of $1.3 Billion. McCain’s speech on the Senate floor, following the Olympics, should be showcased to illustrate how the former GOP standard-bearer described Romney’s “saving the Olympics.”

Yes, I agree with you, HE’S SCREWED.

      ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

i take exception with the notion of African-American voters being…as you call it “Neutered”…

even for those Blk folks who do not agree with the President on same sex marriage…they are not willing to as my sister says….”throw the baby out with the bath water”…For some in the Blk community, the President’s position gave them room to go along with same sex marriage…..

African American people have a rich and unceasing history of struggle….and the President’s positions on health care, women, workers ,family, voter suppression and community involvement…etc…..are relevant to most in the Black community..Blk folks are not a single issue electorate.

when the President is called “foreign”…out of touch….tar babv….monkey….the food stamp President….and now the lies about his record on welfare……when folks ask for his birth cerrtificate…his grades….etc….when they disrespect the First Lady…

WE feel that same pain….WE feel this because WE know they feel that way about all Blk folks…

SO WE HAVE NOT BEEN NEUTERED…..WE ARE STRONG….WE ARE A FORCE TO BE RESPECTED…..

I can’t imagine any sensible Black person voting for Romney just because President Obama supports marriage equality. While some Black Americans may still be cool toward gay marriage, they’re not going to abandon President Obama to vote for a party which is so openly hostile towards them (and women and other minorities). Just not happening.

        • 67 joyfulmeme
          August 9, 2012 at 8:37 pm

There is a group of pastors in NC that have waged an all out war on the president against same sex marriage. They are trying to mobilize and encourage black folks not to vote. They say they are not supporting Romney but they don’t want AAs to vote for Obama.

I find this appalling. I think they are playing into the rw plan to keep minorities away from the polls.

          • 68 gn
            August 9, 2012 at 8:54 pm

There are pastors all over the country, including President Obama’s personal pastor, who have varying levels of disagreement with PBO re: SSM. The country is split down the middle on this issue, with people of faith less likely to agree with PBO. This shouldn’t lead to rhetoric such as the claim that AA voters were “neutered” by PBO’s same sex marriage announcement. And if the group of pastors who you’re referencing are who I think they are, they’re not Dems in the first place and are indeed part of a right wing attempt to depress black turnout (or in my opinion, more nefariously, provide cover for voter suppression by claiming that a decrease in black votes is not due to the multi-state attacks on voting rights taking place right now but to same sex marriage).

        • 69 gn
          August 9, 2012 at 8:45 pm

There’s not a lot of depressed support. Passion for the issue of SSM exists on the right wing primarily. Certainly there are outliers, but Democratic SSM opponents don’t tend to feel that strongly one way or another and certainly don’t think that it trumps bread and butter issues. If black voters were so hostile and needed to be “neutered,” the AA voting bloc wouldn’t be such a dependable and reliable base of the Democratic party in the first place (and make absolutely no mistake, AA voters are an enormous component of the Democratic base, far more important than ows/netroots if we want to start to keep it 100). I have always found it curious that black people are singled out on the issue of SSM when the far more obvious correlation to opposition to SSM is faith, not race.

      • 70 gn
        August 9, 2012 at 8:37 pm

Totally agree. “Neutering AA voters”?? As a pro-SSM black voter, I yet and still take very strong objection to the concept that this was a goal or effect of PBO’s SSM announcement. And that SSM is invariably cast in such divisive tones closes ears, tags the black community as a monolith, and unnecessarily depresses support.

The irony is that of SSM opponents in this country, those who are AA are LESS likely to punish politicians for pro-SSM stances than other races. There simply isn’t the passion for or against SSM. Which is why a chocoloate city like DC has legalized SSM. And which is also why PBO’s announcement had its greatest effect on the religious right, not the Democratic base. Love the comments here, but had to speak up here seeing ows cast in completely unmerited heroic terms while black voters who have formed such a backbone of progress in this country were depicted otherwise (probably not intentionally).

      • August 9, 2012 at 11:35 pm

I agree it was poor choice of verb. I did not mean “neuter” in the veterinarian sense. I meant that Pres. Obama had eased any misgivings AA folks might have had in supporting him even if they did not personally agree with Marriage equality. I’m sorry.

Zizi2 this is an excellent in-depth post on the GOP and media meltdown, re the Bain Ads.
Bill Burton’s super-pac was not even remotely expected to make a dent in the political argument
considering how small it is compared to the mega-pacs on the right. It’s the typical ‘ David vs Goliath’ situation.

But, he did not sit back and wait for the big giants to play their cards. Instead Burton went on the offensive
and released powerful ads like ‘Firms’ which seems to have had a devastating effect.
The GOP and media lackeys were totally thrown off balance because they are not accustomed to a Dem party
that has a spine. Then good ole Harry Reid got into the mix and ran with the baton…

Your piece deserves a FP. posting. Fantastic write-up.

Zizi2, this is a brilliant analysis and post and you have summarized everything beautifully. The Republicans have always underestimated Barack Obama as a candidate and president and they’ve done so to their peril. PBO is a unique personality in history and his is so many steps ahead of them that they not only can’t keep up, they’re losing the path. They’ve had it easy for too long and now that a far more brilliant fighter is beating them on the head every day, they don’t know how to react.

    Will Conservatives Reject Obamacare’s Rebates?

    By E. J. Dionne

    —————————————

Oh yes, and if Romney thinks Obama is gutting welfare reform, I anxiously await his criticism of Brian Sandoval of Nevada and Gary R. Herbert of Utah, GOP governors who requested waivers. If Romney means what he says, doesn’t he have to condemn those who asked Obama to do what Obama did?

Political commentary these days is obsessed with the triviality of this campaign. Most of it is rooted in the refusal of conservatives to be candid about the implications of how their beliefs and commitments would affect the choices they would have government make — and how these differ from the president’s.

In Romney’s case, this often requires him to invent an Obama who exists only in the imagination of his ad makers. So they take Obama’s statements, clip out relevant sentences, and run ads attacking some strung-together words that have a limited connection to what the president said. In the welfare ad, Romney lies outright.

    Good Afternoon,

I believe some of you were outraged as I was this morning at the rant spewed by Morning Joke and Mika. I want to share the note I sent to them.
    ————————————–

Every night I generally end up sleeping with the TV on and wake up listening to Morning Joe. So today, it was not surprising that I woke up with the channel dialed on MSNBC. How much I regretted not having turned off the TV or changed the station last night!

Joe Scarborough’s faint chock at the Priorities USA’s ad about Romney’s Bain’s business practice against the vulnerable was quite a show. Indeed, both Joe’s fake indignation and the 30 second ad devoured most of the first full hour. It is true that one cannot link Mr. Romney’s hands directly into the death of the woman; but it is a fact that the healthcare insurance that she and her husband no longer had allowed her to go unchecked until it was too late. It is also a fact that Romney as the CEO of Bain couldn’t care less about former employees’ well-being, or whether former employees had medical insurance once they were laid off.

But you see, Mr. Joe Scarborough, for poor people – working class people who lose their jobs as those jobs are shipped overseas – that is the very issue.

How to go about keeping medical insurance for the family?
How to go about paying their bills?
How do they find a comparable job that will allow them to maintain their lives?

I must say that while Joe’s phony anger was stretched to the maximum until even a child could see through it, it was Mika that provided the chock I got this morning. I never knew that she could speak in complete sentences. In lieu of the Oh!, Ah!, Euh! she usually utters while rolling her eyes, this morning she engaged on a long rant about the inaccuracies of the ad, defending Mr. Romney’s Bain record, even going at length to show a timeline where Mr. Romney was when the woman was dying. My world!

Where are both Mika and Joe when Romney shamelessly puts false ads after false ads about the President’s records or what he says? Why are Mika and Joe finding it acceptable that Romney would distort every word of this President?

Please, save me your faint obfuscation. For all the pretense of speaking the truth, both you Mika and Joe are nothing than devoted Republicans pundits in a channel other than Fox News. Fair mindedness and impartiality remain foreign qualities to your coverage.

I have a low tolerance for bigots, idiots, narrow minded people and GOTP, even though I respect people’s opinions, as long as they don’t hope to force it down my throat.

    • August 9, 2012 at 4:44 pm

      Well done!

Their timelines mean nothing. Romney/Bain made out like bandits, while the workers did not. Period. How many people who lost their insurance in all the companies that Bain raided were relying on that insurance for ongoing medical care? How many of those people who lost their insurance might have missed a valuable checkup where cancer might have been discovered early enough – while Romney and Bain put millions by raiding their pensions? They can be as outraged as they want to be. The truth is still the truth. Romney’s involvement with this man’s company did not enrich the man’s life. It harmed his life. Bain and Romney were the only ones who were enriched. And if we could see Romney’s tax returns, we could see exactly how much his life was enriched by robbing this man and his wife of their lives.

This poll is actually very consistent with the recent polls released in the last week or two. It is also very consistent with the electoral votes models. Secondly, CNN does not have history of weighting their samples in favor of Democrats or liberal voters. It’s the other outfits like Quinnipiac, ABC/WaPo, and CBS/NYT who weight their sampling towards conservative, older and non-minority voters.

    RICK SANTORUM WAS RIGHT

A bad time for an intra-party fight over Romneycare

    By Steve Benen

    ——————————————-

All of a sudden, conservatives are starting to point at the elephant in the room all over again. The Republican National Committee held a conference call with Rick Santorum today, and when Saul’s comments came up, he laughed inappropriately.

Santorum, you’ll recall, said Romney was the worst Republican in the country to run against Obama precisely because he has no credibility on health care.
    .
    .
This isn’t going away. Several leading right-wing voices are livid and both Romney and his campaign team no longer have any idea what to say about the subject.

Maybe Republicans should have had this conversation during the primaries, instead of 89 days before the election?

Oh. My. God. Just the couple of seconds with Romney looking very nervous… worth a thousand words. The Obama campaign has it easy lol… You just put footage of Romney on the camera and you don’t need a lot more. ANY voter, even those who don’t follow politics, just can see how uncomfortable Romney is.

I can’t help feeling a bit nervous that the GOP will be tempted to abandon Romney if he implodes too soon before the convention. But I keep telling myself that the Obama campaign is very competent; they KNOW what they’re doing.

        • August 9, 2012 at 5:24 pm

I have to admit – I’ve been getting nervous about that, too. But the good thing is that anyone they put up will still be proposing failed GOP policies – including the Paul Ryan plan. Still the same opponent, just a different character playing the lead role.

I have been fearful of Mitt not making it out of the GOP Convention ever since he won the nomination. As the GOP primaries clearly illustrated, Mitt is plain unlikable, (which, like it or not, is very important in US presidential politics). I think most of the “stars” of the party view PBO as unbeatable and are happy to see Mitt serve as the sacrificial lamb in 2012. Thankfully, anyone who would be chosen at the Convention would have to be extreme enough to placate the Tea baggers and would be unelectable.

I would expect the White House to be involved in providing loans to burgeoning industries. Isn’t that what they’re supposed to do? Support risky ventures that might provide value to the entire country and create new sources for competition? Some succeed – some don’t. And the fact that the Administration has provided more funding for green technologies than ever before, I’m thrilled. I wonder if Issa will investigate all the billions (trillions?) that have been supplied to the oil industry, especially given the damage they’ve left in their wake when things go wrong? Now, that’s an investigation worth pursuing!

I think it has now been surmised that Palin’s approval ratings were rigged by her much as her daughter’s votes on DWTS, etc. And, at the point that she was selected as the VP candidate, she had just become involved in the “Troopergate” scandal and lawsuit, and her approval ratings were taking a dive.

Actually, the more chaos right before the convention, the worse it’s going to be for the GOP. It’s not often that a nominee is replaced right before or during a convention. There’s a reason. It’s very HARD to do, and ultimately doesn’t benefit the party or the nominee.

And Reid is not giving everything way. He’s simply letting it drip, drip, drip…

“As I reported earlier today, MSNBC is putting together documentaries about both Romney and Obama that will air prior to the Republican and Democratic conventions. But in an unexpected twist, the Republican presidential candidate is the only one who agreed to grant the LIBERAL NETWORK an interview.

“Mitt Romney: The Making of a Candidate” will feature an exclusive one-on-one interview with Romney that was conducted today with Chuck Todd, who in addition to his duties at NBC News hosts MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown.” Todd also interviewed Romney campaign advisers, past and present, as well as a partner at Bain Capital and a high school classmate.

But “Barack Obama: Making History,” which is being led by MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, will not feature an interview the president. Instead, Matthews will interview Vice President Joe Biden, Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod, Caroline Kennedy and others.

The Obama campaign declined to comment on its decision not to make Obama available for an interview. The Romney campaign declined to comment on its decision to make Romney available”

Romney Has Criticized Every Other Member Of The G-8
Mitt Romney has taken some heat today for comments at a fundraiser this morning calling Japan, an American ally, a “nation in decline and distress.” But Romney has criticized every other member of the G-8 group of developed economic powers over the years as well.

In a rumor started at Old Orange, it’s now all over Twitter that Jon Huntsman Sr. is Reid’s source of info about Willard’s taxes. Apparently, there has been bad blood between the Huntsmans and the Romney’s going way back to the Utah Olympics. Then Jon Sr. was not happy with how Jon Jr. was treated by the GOP during the primaries. But why didn’t he release that information then?

    • August 9, 2012 at 9:31 pm

hf, because I’m sure Jon Sr knew two things: 1. Jon Jr had zero chance of receiving the nomination this cycle given the rabid #teabagger crazies and that Koch, Adelson, et al were going to pour their $$ into supporting a candidate that would appeal to those crazies; and, 2. timing is everything. If Jon Sr really wanted to put the knife to #RomneyHood, Senator Reid’s announcement could not have been more strategically timed 🙂 You want these last 3 weeks before the convention to be absolutely miserable for Mitt and Senator Reid contributed substantially to that misery and he’s not backing down – because he’s got the goods 🙂

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — President Obama made an unannounced visit Thursday to the Olympic training center and he couldn’t help gushing about the U.S. women’s soccer team.

The president told reporters accompanying him that he “could not be prouder” of all of America’s athletes in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“We have to give a special shout out to the  women’s soccer team today avenging the loss in the World Cup,” he said, according to a pool report. The USA beat Japan 2-1 in the Olympic final at London’s Wembley Stadium.

The president stopped at the training center here in Colorado Springs on the last leg of a two-day campaign swing through the state. He greeted athletes such as Michael Prout, a Paralympic swimmer who won Gold and bronze in Athens and is about to go to London for the Paralympic games. And he took pictures with a group of athletes in the gym who were practicing for sports like the Modern Pentathlon.

Stop Blocking VAWA (Violence Against Women Act)
    August 9, 2012

    By: Terry O’Neill, NOW President
    http://now.org/issues/violence/080912StopBlockingVAWA.html

House and Senate GOP leadership have made their position on VAWA strikingly clear: They remain determined to block this lifesaving legislation. It’s not about procedural problems. It’s not entirely about election year politics, either, though conservatives have demonstrated that they’re willing to go to extremes to stop Democrats and especially President Obama from achieving legislative victories. No, what’s going on with VAWA is far more sordid: The GOP leaders are determined to replace VAWA with a bill that excludes certain types of people.

The Violence Against Women Act has, since 1994, represented Congress’ best effort to stem the tragedy of domestic violence. But after 18 years, victim advocates, police officers, courts and legal service providers tell us there’s more that VAWA can do. Serious gaps in services have come to our attention through talking to more than 2,000 service providers, justice system personnel, and state and county executives. So when VAWA came up for reauthorization, participants across the field thought it was right to fill the gaps and provide services for those who have not had the same access to VAWA’s protections over the past 18 years. We all thought it was right to commit to providing broader, more carefully targeted services to LGBT and immigrant victims, as well as victims of these violent crimes on tribal lands.

So that’s what we asked Congress to do. Serve the most vulnerable populations. Don’t say that one victim is more deserving than another. Let’s make sure VAWA serves them all.

Two years ago, representatives from the field went to all members of Congress to make the case for a more inclusive VAWA. We went to both Democratic and Republican offices. We went to the leadership of the Senate and House Judiciary Committees, showed them the results of our surveys, and asked them to honor the evidence-based request from the field to ensure that VAWA serves all victims.

One of the offices we went to first was Senator Grassley’s office, as he is the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. We showed our data to his staff; some of us even met with the senator in person. We told Grassley and his staff two years ago that three serious gaps exist: a dearth of services for LGBT, immigrant and tribal victims.

So imagine my surprise last week, when I heard Sen. Grassley, on behalf of Senate Republican leadership, complain on the floor that the addition of protections for these three populations was the result of Democrats’ “election year politics.” You read that right. Charles Grassley whined that these provisions were included in S. 1925 to make Republicans look bad in an election year.

Wow. Did Grassley forget that he and his staff spoke with dozens of national organizations about these needs two years ago? Did he completely block out the fact that these populations were included in S. 1925 because the experts in the field made the case for such protections two years ago? Is that why he stood on the floor of the Senate, huffing and puffing that he doesn’t want to look bad while throwing up a bogus procedural hurdle to stop the Senate-passed bipartisan, inclusive VAWA in its tracks?

Grassley’s obstructionism is calculated to achieve passage of a truly dreadful version of VAWA, which passed in the House on a party-line vote, 222-205, with 23 Republicans voting against it. That bill has rightly been called racist, exclusionary and homophobic because it turns its back on the underserved populations addressed in the Senate bill. It also undermines VAWA’s essential purpose and is so bad for women that President Obama has already promised to veto it should it reach his desk.

It’s not the Democrats who are making Republican leaders look bad. Senators Grassley, McConnell and some other Republican leaders are doing that all by themselves.

The reality is that 68 senators, including 15 Republicans, decided a victim is a victim, and all victims should be served, when they voted for the inclusive version of VAWA. It is past time for Senators Grassley and McConnell to stop playing fast and loose with the facts and cease playing politics with women’s lives.

    Stop blocking VAWA now.

Take Action: If you care about protecting all women from violence, call your Congress member during the August recess, and urge them to support the Senate’s bipartisan, inclusive version of the Violence Against Women Act.

ROMNEY GOES FROM THE ECONOMY STUPID TO BIRTH CONTROL, WELFARE, AND ISRAEL

    ============================================================================

Rachel Maddow just did a terrific segment pulling back the curtain on the fact that Mitt Romney still has not won over his conservative base. She reviewed his June and July ads which were devoted to wishy washty gibberish on the economy and bashing of President Obama. But suddenly August has turned into WHO SHARES YOUR VALUES. That’s right, the burning issues now are birth control, welfare and Israel. Sounds like a pivot back to the GOP primaries not the general election.
