Instead of talking to economists like me, we need to be talking to psychologists and sociologists to try to get at the root of this problem.

    BILL MOYERS: Are you pessimistic?

BRUCE BARTLETT: Oh, absolutely. I’m very pessimistic.

BILL MOYERS: What makes you most pessimistic right now?

BRUCE BARTLETT: The gridlock in Congress. Or I don’t know. It’s the lack of willingness to discuss issues in a reality-based way. We just seem to live in a zone in which people no longer really seem to care about facts or analysis. And we talk in sound bites.

And the media of course contribute to this. The decline of the major media. People don’t want to read magazines. They don’t even want to read a newspaper article if it’s more than a couple of inches. And if it doesn’t mention Lindsay Lohan, they move on.

Clearly people don’t seem to know as much. And they don’t seem to care that they don’t know as much about public policy or just the basic facts of, you know, how much does the government tax, how much does the government spend? What does the government spend money on? I’ve seen more than one poll that shows people believe that 20 percent of government spending goes to foreign aid.

20 percent. It’s actually one percent. But of course if you believe a huge percentage of government spending is going to just giveaways to foreigners then why not cut taxes and slash spending? It’s not coming out of anything that matters to you. People have to be given the factual information they need to make decisions. And they’re not getting it. And they may not even want it.

BILL MOYERS: I just read a summary of a study done at the University of Michigan that over a period of time shows that people have confronted with facts they believe to be true will reject them nonetheless if they offend or undermine their belief system. That their beliefs — our beliefs are more important to us than the facts.

BRUCE BARTLETT: Oh, I think we need some — instead of talking to economists like me, we need to be talking to psychologists and sociologists to try to get at the root of this problem.

They only gave an excerpt, not the full interview. It’s very typical of the MSM to break up PBO’s interview over two or more days to milk the ratings as much as possible because people tune in whenever the President is on compared to the GOP.

Dear Mitt: *You* Don’t Get to Say That

    By Juan Cole

    Dear Mitt Romney:

Your so-called Medicare reform is just a way of shifting health expenses from millionaires (whose taxes you want to lower) to middle class and working people (with whom you want to stick the bill). A 48-year-old today, who starts getting Medicare in 2030, would have to pay an extra $124,600 under your plan! Meanwhile, your running mate’s tax plan would reduce your own income taxes, as a multimillionaire, to less than one percent a year. You don’t get to say that!
After campaigning for months on repealing Obamacare, you suddenly say you want to keep “parts” of it, including preventing insurance companies from declining to cover people for pre-existing conditions. The way Obamacare allows that provision, however, is to make all the healthy young people get insurance or face a fine, thus increasing the pool size so as to allow those with known health conditions to also join the pool without bankrupting the companies. I mean, this is flip-flopping on an epic scale. First you invented Obamacare in Massachusetts, then you repudiated it as a national program, now you are embracing the key “parts” of it while pledging to repeal it! You don’t get to say that!

    More examples here……….

Mitt Romney needs to sit down with Paul Ryan and remind him who’s really at the top of the ticket. Ryan was on This Week and Romney was on MTP and they kept contradicting each other. Romney refused to eliminate deductions for the wealthy. Ryan says in a Romney administration, he’s going to make sure as VP he gets congress to eliminate tax deductions and loopholes for the 1%. Romney doesn’t plan on ending the Afghan war soon. Ryan on This Week said he and Romney support Pres. Obama’s 2014 Afghan war deadline. Romney says he would keep some provisions of ObamaCare but still completely eliminate ObamaCare. Ryan says he and Romney would 100% repeal ObamaCare. Ryan said Pres. Obama has no foreign policy record. Stephanopoulos had to remind him about Osama Bin Laden. Romney says he’s not running to slow the rise of the oceans or heal the planet. He’s running for people. Hahahaha….what a moron. People don’t live on planets huh? If the planet goes kaput hey that’s the price we pay for a Romney presidency. Does he not have a filter?

It was so freaking hilarious. Paul Ryan is clearly more interested in himself and 2016.

Cutler’s analysis — based on Rep. Paul Ryan’s latest budget — found that people who turn 65 now would end up paying, in today’s dollars, about $11,000 in extra retirement costs, while people who are still 54 now would pay an extra $59,500. Seniors who qualify for Medicare in 2030 would see an increase of $124,600.
“Gov. Romney and Rep. Ryan claim that no one over 55 will be affected by their health care plan,” Cutler and his coauthors wrote. “This claim is false. Their plan would harm all seniors.”

Wow! Apparently the big news coming out of the MTP interview is the Robot is now flipflopping on Obamacare!

Mitt Romney said Sunday that he likes parts of ‘Obamacare’ and will keep key provisions involving pre-existing conditions and young people.

“I’m not getting rid of all of health care reform. Of course there are a number of things that I like in health care reform that I’m going to put in place,” he said on NBC’s “Meet The Press. “One is to make sure that those with pre-existing conditions can get coverage. Two is to assure that the marketplace allows for individuals to have policies that cover their family up to whatever age they might like.”

What happened to “I’ll repeal the whole thing on Day One”? How could any voter trust anything this man says?

President Barack Obama and his Florida bus tour made an unscheduled stop this morning in downtown Cocoa  where the president went into the little Ossorio Bakery & Café, ordered some breakfast, and spent some time chatting, shaking hands and signing autographs.

Obama sat down and had breakfast with Gerry Clark, a retired minister, and his wife Jan, and John and Shirley Hill. They made small talk and discussed Medicare and health care.

Outside, he encountered were two teachers, Cheryl Turner, 49, a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher at Educational Horizons Charter School in West Melbourne and Candice Shreve, 47, a 2nd grade teacher at Stevenson Elementary on Merritt Island. The pair were having breakfast with Turner’s brother Tim Austin, 47, of Rockledge and Shreve’s friend Chris Marriott, 49, of Melbourne, after biking for 30 miles this morning.

Obama made the stop while the bus tour was heading from Orlando to Melbourne, where he is giving a late-morning speech. He arrived at Cocoa’s artsy Cocoa Village neighborhood around 10:05 a.m. and stayed more than a half hour. Ossorio offers indoor and outdoor service and tables and the president visited people at both.

Turner said her class was studying the election, and the president signed autographs on White House cards for her and Shreve to share with their students. The two said they were Democrats, Austin a Republican and Marriott a Canadian.

“This is the highlight of my life,” Shreve said, holding up her card.

“It was by accident we were here and we’re so thrilled,” Turner said.

  50. 125 proudmemberofglobalzero
    September 9, 2012 at 12:24 pm

Just want to say…i was watching his speech. I live in the rather confusing state of Florida now. In my neighborhood I loose power just because it is Tuesday. No rhyme but the reason is lack of a good power grid. I have had to call FPL about 10 times in the last few months. The transformer behind my house blows up and power lines drop in my back yard. This transformer was replaced just 6 months ago. I call FPL so many times for a problem…I am now a priority case for them. Usually when you call for an outage you get a recording telling just how many homes in your area are out and the estimated time to repair them. The last time, last weekend by the way, I did not get that recording. My account number sent me to a real person that said our house is a priority, as well as my neighborhood.

What I cannot understand is…..we have solar panels powering every street light from east to west of Alligator Alley. Every house here should have solar panels not generators when the power goes out. WE have enough sun EVERYDAY to charge and store in a great solar panel. To m aned most in our state….this could be our “Manufacturing” base.

    • September 9, 2012 at 12:36 pm

I’ve wondered for a long time why we can’t rent solar panels like we used to rent hot water heaters from the electric companies. There are some companies (not utilities) that make that possible, but not in my state. Imagine what would happen to manufacturing of photovoltaics if that happened.

Not political news, but cool just the same. A while back, I was wondering is Sean Connery was alive, I think I was watching a James Bond marathon or something. Everyone told me that he was still alive, but even if they hadn’t, I need wonder no more.

Connery and Fergie surprise Andy Murray

Sir Sean Connery and Sir Alex Ferguson shocked Scottish tennis star Andy Murray by making an appearance at his after-match press conference in New York.

Murray had just won through to the final of the US Open when the two Scottish legends gatecrashed his news conference, much to the tennis player’s delight.

    This is a huge flip!

On ABC’s “This Week” roundtable Sunday, conservative columnist George Will questioned the mathematical soundness of the Romney-Ryan tax cut plan. It’s estimated to cost trillions of dollars but Mitt Romney vows that it will be revenue neutral by closing unspecified loopholes on high-income taxpayers.

“There is uncertainty surrounding the Romney-Ryan tax cut plan, because they have not specified the deductions that will be closed,” Will said. “And we know where the big money is: mortgage interest deductions, charitable deductions, taxing that’s compensation, which it is, employee-provided health insurance, and state and local taxes. All of those, you either hit only the rich, in which case you don’t get much money, or you hit the middle class.”

Asked to provide details of their plan in separate interviews on Sunday talk shows, Romney and Paul Ryan repeatedly declined.

What these people are saying to the American people is…they don’t DESERVE TO KNOW !!!

OMG! R/R have fallen off the cliff. Politico–that’s right, Politico–is implying that Romney is a liar!

Romney was asked by Gregory about the last time he “really got to spend some quality time with somebody who was out of work.”

“Well actually just last night… I was with a person who is facing some challenges,” Romney said. “We spent some time together and shared our personal experiences in an effort on my part to point out that we can make it through tough times.”

Romney had no public events the evening of Sept. 6, and spent it at his Lake Winnipesauke home in Wolfeboro, N.H. At the time, the campaign did not advise that Romney had any visitors there.

      Mitt “the Liar” Romney.

    • September 9, 2012 at 1:56 pm

I didn’t see any implication that Romney was lying. It noted the press wasn’t informed of any visitors to the Romneys. Too bad Gregory didn’t follow up on the question he asked.

      September 9, 2012 at 4:34 pm

another interpretation of this little scene is that myth was talking with someone working there, not a visitor.

i can just picture it: myth says to the chauffeur, ‘you’re fired. well, maybe you’re not fired. i just like firing people. okay, yes, you are actually fired. oh, that’s a hardship for you? let me tell you a little story. i had to make do once. yes, miss ann and i were young, just making do on a few investments and some money our parents gave us. it was hard. but we overcame that through smarts and some stocks that were successful. so shop around, see if you can strengthen your portfolio. that’s my advice to you. and hey, you don’t have to thank me–no actually you do have to thank me. hey, where are you going? i didn’t hear those magic words…’

That video is from late July 2012. There should of been an uproar about this at the time, when their book came out. Our Bob has been pushing this message of the inauguration ploy to defeat our President…yet this message is lost on most Americans. There should be true outrage on what the GOP has done to our country. I wish President Clinton would pounce on this and “explain” it to America. Perhaps then people would listen. How can we get him to look into this? Anyone know?

So you never worry how you would put food on the table for your kids, you never worry how the rent would get paid, or with no health insurance, how you would take you and your kids to the doctor. You never worry about how you were going to get school clothes for your kids, or Christmas gifts for your kids. You never worry about if you can afford to send your kids to college. But Ann and Mitt Romney know what it is like to struggle. Bullsh*t.

possibly she’s referring to her struggles with cancer and m.s. and of course we all appreciate that those are terrible diseases to endure.

what we don’t really believe she understands, though, is that 99% of americans also struggle with devastating health issues in their families, but we also have to worry that the medical bills will bankrupt us.

we have to worry about getting to a job every day to pay the bills, even while we fight for our lives against a deadly disease. we have to worry about losing our health insurance, and being refused services we desperately need to survive.

you’re right anniebella, they don’t know what it’s like to struggle, because they have no empathy for others.

Romney says he spoke about Afghanistan at the American Legion (which he feels absolved him of ever commenting about the war in Afghanistan again), note his remarks:

“…and we are still at war in Afghanistan. We still have uniformed men and women in conflict, risking their lives just as you once did. All of this is happening around the world right now” Romney told the American legion. “And yet, for the the past four years, President Obama has allowed our leadership to diminish. In dealings with other nations, he has given trust where it was not earned, insult where it was not deserved, and apology where it is not due.”

From Booman on the structure of the debates:

Domestic policy (Oct 3, Jim Lehrer) and foreign policy (Oct 22, Bob Schieffer) will follow the same format: “The moderator will open each segment with a question, after which each candidate will have two minutes to respond. The moderator will use the balance of the time in the segment for a discussion of the topic.”

Veep (Oct 11, Martha Raddatz): “The debate will cover both foreign and domestic topics and be divided into nine time segments of approximately 10 minutes each. The moderator will ask an opening question, after which each candidate will have two minutes to respond. The moderator will use the balance of the time in the segment for a discussion of the question.”

They’re only trusting Candy Crowley with the townhall format (Oct 16): “Citizens will ask questions of the candidates on foreign and domestic issues. Candidates each will have two minutes to respond, and an additional minute for the moderator to facilitate a discussion. The town meeting participants will be undecided voters selected by the Gallup Organization.”

Interesting discussion on OFA’s use of symbolic imagery:

How One Hard-to-Spot Visual Detail Could Help Shape Voter Perceptions
The most interesting thing about the Democratic National Convention’s logo isn’t obvious at first — but that doesn’t mean it won’t have impact.

The Obama campaign is famous for the quality of its visual imaging. In 2008, graphic design played a bigger role in introducing and selling the Democratic candidate than it had in any campaign in the past two decades. This year, one of the most striking visuals was on prominent display all last week: the Democratic National Convention’s logo.

This logo, in fact, can tell us a surprising amount about the way the Democratic National Committee is positioning the party going into the election.

The Republican Party and the Chinese Communists agree on this principle: when you are pregnant, the pregnancy is the government’s business, not yours.

orking on this principle in China, the Communist government may order a pregnant woman to abort. However, in the US, if the Republicans have their way as announced in their party platform, if you are pregnant, the government will order you to carry the fetus to term, no matter what the circumstances. And it seems that the Republicans are having their way, as evidenced by the well advanced whittling down of Roe v.Wade.

The statist principle endorsed by the Chinese Communists and the Republicans is this: a pregnant woman is not in charge of her pregnancy, the government is, and the government will tell her what to do about it. So the word is: get pregnant, and you are no longer in charge of your body. The State is…the government is….and you will take orders either to deliver (the US) or to abort (China). After you deliver or abort, you will then resume control of your body, but only for as long as you are not pregnant.
