    Call to ACTION

I believe the Senate is voting on gun violence today, event if they have postponed it, please call your Senators today.

If you are willing to call Senators in neighboring areas here is a list of all Senators with their DC and one local #

To find their email, or twitter accounts visit

OFA had planned phone banking to senators on Tuesday but it was cancelled due to the Boston tragedy. We had been asked to call into AZ. I was thinking of Desertflower when I read this. We could all start by calling Jeff Flake

Because we need a bit of silliness today.

The Three Hundred and Thirty Five Years’ War (Dutch: Driehonderdvijfendertigjarige Oorlog) was a theoretical state of war between the Netherlands and the Isles of Scilly (located off the southwest coast of Great Britain). It is said to have been extended by the lack of a peace treaty for 335 years without a single shot being fired, which would make it one of the world’s longest wars and a bloodless war. Despite the uncertain validity of the declaration of war, and thus uncertainty about whether or not a state of war ever actually existed in the first place, peace was finally declared in 1986, bringing an end to any hypothetical war that may have been legally considered to exist.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said Monday that the Voting Rights Act is an “embedded” form of “racial preferment,” according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

He later criticized United States Supreme Court precedents that expanded the number of minority groups, positing that “child abusers” could be a minority, but do not deserve special protection.

Scalia’s remarks, made at the University of California Washington Center, echoed his description of the voting act as “racial entitlement” during arguments in Shelby County v. Holder in February. The case challenged Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, which requires several states with a history of racial discrimination — mostly in the South — to pre-clear their voting laws with the Justice Department.

Scalia was also asked about whether the Constitution should recognize same-sex relationships. “I don’t consider homosexuality a new phenomenon,” he responded, saying that it was a crime at the ratification of the 14th Amendment.

This man is very dangerous to our Democracy……..

And yet Democrats choose to withhold their votes for ‘perfect’ candidates.

Allowing a small, virulent minority to decide who is elected to office results in – SC Justice Antonin Scalia. And Roberts. And Alito.

    • 50 Lovepolitics2008
      April 17, 2013 at 1:38 pm

I pray that the suspects are white far-right anti-government types. This would be the best scenario for America to make progress. If , God forbid, it ended up to be some black man (men), it would fuel the racial anxieties that unfortunately have been rising after the election of President Obama. In the case that the culprits would be some jihadists, the right wing will have a new excuse to peddle hate and xenophobia.

      • 51 hopefruit2
        April 17, 2013 at 1:40 pm

I’m not praying one way or the other for the suspect to be of any race or ethnicity. I’m hoping they find the right person, and that the media reports accurately. That’s all I’m asking.

This is so silly. Like the police or FBI or ATF is going to tell CNN, “Well, we have an ID on a specific suspect, but all I can tell you is that he is dark-skinned.”
Unless they want to make the real suspect think they have it wrong so as not to alert him.

Bobfr……the GUN Bill had a senate agreement fro 60 vote threshold. Many Red states were pushing for a Conceal and Carry. They were looking for a federal bill to legalize C&C in the 50 states and DC. It was a rotten deal…..but coming from a state where C&C is now the law since 2005……..I understand why they made the deal.

Note. I am not excusing them…..especially Dems…….but those were what stopped the C&C…..eventually as the bill comes up, it will be voted down.

I didn’t say or imply you have an agenda. I’m simply saying that at this point I would take anything from the MSM with the appropriate amount salt – especially from a CNN source who has known to be inaccurate with reports on previous occasions. You and Nena both hinted that because he’s from the Boston area, his reports should be afforded greater credibility than other reporters. I’m saying that’s not necessarily true.

Speaking of the “people of Boston,” and to try to lighten the load a little … just saw this old story about correspondence between Rose Kennedy (whose father was at one time Mayor of Boston) and her son, President Kennedy. I like to think this same jovial relationship would have existed between President Obama and his mother, were she here with us to see him in the White House. While we all move forward after Boston, as best we can, thought you’d enjoy looking to the past just a little …

Rose, the student, wrote delightful prose. Rose, the nonagenarian, wrote a beautiful but poignant memoir. Having read great literature, she instilled the joy of reading to her children. Her quick Irish humor served her well.

When Premier Krushchev signed photographs of himself and President Kennedy and returned them to Rose, she sent them to her son with a note about her plan to have the photographs signed by him and then make the exchange with Krushchev.

“I received the following letter from (Jack): ‘Dear Mother: If you are going to contact the head of state, it might be a good idea to consult me or the State Department first, as your gesture might lead to international complications. Love, Jack.’”

    Her reply:

“Dear Jack: I am so glad you warned me about contacting the head of state, as I was just about to write to Castro. Love, Mother”

Can’t believe all the conflicting info—-Reuters saying there’s helicopters and sirens at the fed. ct. house, CNN saying fed officials have brought suspect to ct. house. Other news outlets more cautious in their reporting. Now it’s sounding like CNN is qualifying their excited breaking news saying arrest has been made. Now CNN has live aerial shot of courthouse.
