Reuters: President Barack Obama said on Wednesday he still wanted to close Guantanamo Bay prison but said the plan had been tougher to achieve than he had hoped due to resistance from Congress. “We cannot have a permanent outpost in which they are being held even as we are ending a war in Afghanistan that triggered the capture of some of these detainees in the first place,” Obama said at a joint news conference in Berlin with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“We must not be so driven by fear that we change the fabric of society in ways we don’t intend and we do not want for the future. I think closing Guantanamo is an example of us getting out of that perpetual war mentality,” Obama said. He added that the United States was not using Germany as a launching point for unmanned drones as part of efforts to combat terrorism.

Hey Hope. Good morning. This is indeed, an excellent post. Hey, have you seen the latest from Donna Brazille giving PBO low marks for not bringing the country together printed in the New York Times?

        • 11 anniebella
          June 19, 2013 at 9:11 am

What is going on here, even people you expect to have some common sense seem to have lost it. How in the hell do Donna Brazile blame POTUS for not bringing the country together. This is just plain stupid B.S. from her. And I would love to tell her that too.

        • 12 forus50
          June 19, 2013 at 9:15 am

Judge not lest ye be judged…maybe as his Campaign Manager if Donna Brazile had suggested that Al Gore spend some time in Tennessee in 2000. Note to Ms. Brazile; we call him President Obama and not former VP Gore…

Plus, are they that hard up for news? This is a dumb story as President Obama has done TONS to bridge the divide. Suggesting that a president representing all 50 states by visiting every state is like saying you don’t like French food unless you go to France.

        June 19, 2013 at 9:05 am

Donna must be looking for some tv air time, Africa. With this piece, she’s guaranteed the talk show circuit. Nothing more appealing than a high name minority Democrat trashing the president. Funny how she couldn’t think of anything else to write about after weeks of the GOP pushing faux scandals and an IT twerp stealing US security data. Donna also wants a prominent role in the Clinton campaign, so this is part of her positioning.

      • 16 hopefruit2
        June 19, 2013 at 9:23 am

Donna brazille is angling for a position in the Clinton campaign/presidency. I guess bashing PBO is one way towards beefing up her credentials – or so she thinks.

As I wrote previously, I’m covering the German part of the European trip. I have included links in the post for late comers who want to view the posts that they’ve missed of the German trip. There will be another post on Germany after Pres. Obama has delivered remarks at the Brandenburg Gate. If you have pictures, videos, articles that will enhance the coverage, as usual, leave them in the comments. Thanks!

Coverage of Pres. Obama’s remarks at the Brandenburg Gate has already begun. You can view the links here and in the post.

Good morning all TODvillians and any visitors who have decided to increase their knowledge of the actual facts in the world by coming here.

I have a hunch that today is going to be a momentous day in many ways, not the least of which will be PBO’s speech today.

As yesterday showed, the media is doing its best to downplay his trrip overseas and the reception he receives. They won’t succeed. Americans will know without a doubt how much respect and love the world has for this man. They see, without the ideological blinders that are so present here, just what kind of man he is and what he has done for the world. The rest of the world knows that he has been hamstrung throughout his Presidency and yet has marched on to get the things he knows are needed accomplished.

I doubt there are many countries where the population would not prefer his leadership over the current leadership in those countries.

It’s my personal pet peeve that on this side of the world so many generally make such a fuss about learning another language. I so wish I had been exposed to several – particularly because I’m really nosy and hate not knowing what people are talking about when they speak loudly in public.

The only thing I know about this Syria war, if we wanted to, it wouldn’t be hard to overthrow Assad with ALL our mite.
But that would cost about 1 trillion dollars and a couple years of war.
The cost would mean we would have to offset it, bc congress will not approve.
So, that would mean the repeal of medicate in order to pay for the new Syrian all out war.
Nope! The President is correct in being restrained and Tweety is lying his ass off about it.

Just a little something from a German native speaker.
The chancellor uses the more informal form of “you” around him. The one you use around friends or family or peers.
She did that in the press conference too. there was a double question from some journalist, the second being about Gitmo and she said she´d answer the first, turned to PBO and said “and maybe the one about Gitmo goes to you”. In case you wondered why that was followed by cuckling: she used the buddy / family /friends form of “you” –> du

The man founded the company in 1973 and have featured himself in just about all the ads…..now, they have let him go. The guy owns the company.

Men’s Wearhouse ousts founder and exec. chairman

    June 19, 2013 09:28 AM EST |

NEW YORK — Men’s Wearhouse Inc. says it has dismissed its founder and executive chairman George Zimmer.

In a terse release issued Wednesday, the company didn’t give a reason for the abrupt firing of Zimmer, who founded the chain in 1973. It said that the board expects to discuss with Zimmer the extent, if any, and terms of “his ongoing relationship” with the company.

Zimmer was seen as the face of the company, appearing in many of its TV commercials with the slogan, “You’re going to like the way you look. I guarantee it.”

POTUS wanted to get in that crowd to shake hands so bad, but the Secret Services said No No Mr President.

Another German bit: When he quoted JFK´s famous quote….he got the pronunciation right 😀 Unlike JFK who pronounced “ich” like “ick”, PBO managed the ch sound. Which I maybe heard a handful of Americans do so far. He must have been practising that and insisted on being taught how to do that, because that´s not how americans would instinctively pronounce it.

The crowd seemed to appreciate it, too.

The crowd freaks out whenever an American president uses a German word 😉 Because we think that´s cute 😉

Also nilliathiel, his sister, Auma speaks fluent German. I love listening to my brother who studied German in high school and college. Then went on to Germany to live and study there. We have some beautiful and very dear friends who visit from time to time. However, I do not speak German but I love it when he speaks with his dear friends. Such a joy to watch. HZ

It’s our stupid media who want to criticized . It’s funny they fine it so easy to criticized POTUS, but regardless what the racists women hating Republicans do, the media let them off the hook.

Thanks for letting us know. There were some catty remarks when he apparently did not get the Gaelic quite right a few times in NI.

this is what they- the gop, the media hate- that he stirs the people- that he continues to put the power to change this world for the better into our hands… it is always about ‘we the people’ for President Obama… which is exactly what they fear. He never fails to move me, to motivate me.
