Nice collection! Love is so complicated.

Congrats on #1, Vitivera. Looks like we both crossed the finish line at the same time. Yes I love the topic about love. I recommend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s book: “Strength to Love,” which brilliantly discusses the different levels of love. Most of us focus on romantic love and love of family and friends. Great souls like Gandhi, Dr. King, Nelson Mandela, and others are also vitally focused on love of humanity. This love of humanity is, without a doubt, one of the most challenging love that very few of us ever attain.

Thanks UT! I got introduced to “Another Love” through BBC 2. It was the first time I’d heard of Tom Odell, then I started hearing more of him. Lovely artist.

Indeed! And not only Rick Perry, but almost all the members of the Republican party currently holding political office. They’ve all made “a career of” denigrating women.

Last puzzle (I swear) of the day.

You are given two ropes and a lighter. Each of the two ropes has the following property: if you light one end of the rope, it will take exactly one hour to burn to the other end. It doesnโ€™t necessarily burn at a uniform rate. How can you measure a period of 45 minutes?

Gunnite folks. May you have fire-y dreams.

    • 39 utaustinliberal
      July 8, 2013 at 10:21 pm

Well, what you have to do is light both ends of the first rope and only one end of the second rope. After about let’s say, thirty minutes, the first rope will be completely burned up and there will be just approximately thirty minutes of the second rope left. So you light the other end of the second rope and it will pretty much burn up in fifteen minutes. So your total elapsed time since setting the ropes on fire, would be forty-five minutes.

I ain’t never doing any more of your puzzles – I begin to feel as dumb as a GOPer – and that is seriously a worry. Send them all to Rick Perry – he always answers – doesn’t give a damn that his answers are always wrong.

Here’s why the Koch’s think spending millions to slam the Affordable Care Act is a good investment. With all the good the law is doing, public opinion is still not where it should be. We’ve gotta fix that!

ON TAP TUESDAY: The House will take up its proposed energy and water spending bill, a measure that takes a whack at the clean-energy priorities of President Obama and Democrats.
Tuesday starts what figures to be a free-wheeling amendment process and floor debate that could carry on for two days.
The GOP-crafted $30.4 billion fiscal 2014 Energy and Water Development appropriations bill is ideologically far apart from the budget Senate Democrats and the president have put together. House Republicans say the bill reflects a tighter fiscal situation, as Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) argued that it “gets back to the basis.”
The House bill nearly halves clean-energy spending from last year’s enacted levels. It also aims to restart using Yucca Mountain as the nation’s sole permanent nuclear waste repository โ€” Obama pulled the plug on the Nevada site in 2010 โ€” despite White House and Senate resistance.
Those differences will make it tough to negotiate a spending plan with the upper chamber, and Obama threatened to veto the House bill Monday. The House plan will probably pass regardless, with a bulk, if not all, of the support coming from Republicans.
Overall, the bill is $2.8 billion less than what was set aside for the Energy Department, Army Corps of Engineers, Nuclear Regulatory Commission and other agencies in fiscal 2013 โ€” and $4.1 billion less than what Obama recommended for 2014.

    Jeesh!

Great tweet! Thanks Dudette for sharing it. I hope it’s re-twitted over and over again. I have a very dear nephew, an Econ major. We were discussing debt and deficits, he thought I had totally lost all my marbles when I pointed out that St. Ronnie Reagan set the record in increasing govt. deficit.

My wife and I have very strong feelings about the idea that there is anything mystical or magical at all about love. In fact, we believe that the idea that two people were ‘meant for each other’ or that ‘there is a right person out there for everyone’ or that someone is ‘god’s match’ for someone else greatly diminishes what love is and also decreases the chances that it will last as a happy experience.

We believe that every person you meet is an opportunity to love. The question is whether it can be romantic love and whether you will be good to each other and whether they will do the same back. Here’s the thing. If I spend my time deluding myself that we were ‘meant to be together’ or that ‘she’s the one special person that is supposed to be for me’ then I am telling myself that I am automatically entitled to her treating me accordingly. Also, what we are calling love will be built on mystical assumptions. Instead, we spend our time endeavoring to be worthy of each other’s special treatment. I do my best every day to be deserving of the treatment that I would like from her and she does that same too. The result is that we both wind up getting fantastic treatment. In the meantime as a result, we have learned that we can trust each other, the we can depend on each other, that the other is consistently a team mate and not a free agent out for their self. We wind up taking very seriously the role of lover, confidant, best friend, and trusted rock in each other’s life. It is very easy to treat her like the best thing in my life because she IS the best thing in my life. I do my damnedest to be the best thing in her life too. In this way we have built love based on very real and extremely valuable things. Doing so only serves to make the value of that love a continuously growing thing.

We also try to remember that if there is to be a day when we are old and sitting on the porch swing together watching our children play with our grandchildren and great grandchildren and I put my arm around her and think about all of the stuff that we got through together, all of the challenges, tragedies, and hard times conquered as a twosome (in my view this is the pinnacle of human connection), then we’re going to have to actually encounter and get each other through those struggles. We try to remember in the midst of those times that this is going to be another item to add to that front porch moment. It will make sweeter our reward on that day when we have had an entire life to become so close to each other and so much more in love.

I can’t imagine anything in life before my end, that will make seeing that day without her a worthwhile choice.

I know what I’ve just said is really cheesy, but it has worked very well for us for 15 years so far and we’re very serious about it. I am the most happily married man that I know.

But a senior Democratic aide said Democratic chairmen are concerned a partisan blowup over rules reform this month could imperil the chances of passing major reauthorization bills, such as the Strengthening Americaโ€™s Schools Act and the defense authorization bill.
Reidโ€™s biggest obstacle is Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), chairman of the Armed Services Committee, who is in charge of shepherding the defense bill through the upper chamber. Levin has staunchly opposed meaningful limits to the minority partyโ€™s right to filibuster and helped derail reform efforts in January.
