Okay, I’m stupid when it comes to sports: why are the 1972 Dolphins important?

The were undefeated . They went 17-0 that year.

    • August 20, 2013 at 2:04 pm

They never lost a game during the season or post season. Only team to ever do it. Patriots came close a few years ago, but I think they lost to Giants in Superbowl. They played twelve games regular season, now they play sixteen. Would be hard for anyone to do it again.

Actually it was 14-0 in the regular season and then they won three playoff games beating my Skins in the Superbowl. 😦

Found the info. She’s over a year old.

She was born in June 2012. 😀

    • August 20, 2013 at 2:24 pm

When they did a closeup of her face I thought she looked like a little bear cub. I remember FLOTUS saying they would hear Bo making noise in the hall and he was playing with something by himself. He must have a lot of energy. I doubt if the two of them will be quieter tho.

        August 20, 2013 at 2:42 pm

Two dogs are not quieter – it’s louder. I cannot believe the noise my bichon/maltese mix and my yorkie can make when they play. But it’s a joy to watch, particularly since my yorkie had been a puppy mill breeder who we adopted when they threw her out at 7 years old. But you should see that little old broad play with her ‘brother’ who is half her age.

    • August 20, 2013 at 2:39 pm

White House dogs would have to be so well trained and socialized, especially since the Obamas use them almost as therapy dogs. I bet they were trained and socialized for part of that year.

        August 20, 2013 at 2:43 pm

Exactly. they seem really comfortable together and that doesn’t happen overnight.

        • August 20, 2013 at 2:54 pm

I have a friend who works with Paw for a Cause, an organization that provides service dogs to people who need them. She takes a puppy every year, gives it basic training, brings it to work and as he does her errands, plays with them, gets them used to being calm and focused around strangers. She brought one dog to my classroom to explain the program because we were having a fund-raiser. Tivo (the dog) answered all her commands, and then lay down and slept on his back, legs stretched out and flopping while she talked to the 25 kids that were within touching distance of him. Talk about calm! After the year he was accepted for further, specific training and has been placed in a facility where he will work with therapists. Seeing the way Bo acts with a strem of White House visitors I think he must have had similar training.

            That is so fantastic!

So, getting these dogs to obey commands is part of the deal? My dogs would be EPIC fails!

            • August 20, 2013 at 3:11 pm

I know! May friend, Kathy, is a wizard, and if I ever get another dog, I think I will ask her to raise it for a year and train it for me 😉 One dog I had, a corgi (love them!), was very smart but used his intelligence for evil purposes. If he was outside and told to go in he would fake going it and then run off. He was amazingly adept at taking food right out of my children’s hands as they were eating it without spilling a spot or laying a tooth on them.

The horrors of smart dogs who use their genius for evil. Well, done, little corgi!

I have NO IDEA what you’re talking about (ahem). I’m just happy this current crew enjoys playing together. I’ve had dogs who wouldn’t be caught dead looking like, well, a dog.

      • August 20, 2013 at 2:55 pm

She wasn’t complaining, just joking about it. I’m sure they are well trained.

        • August 20, 2013 at 3:08 pm

No, I realize she wasn’t complaining. I had the same thought myself – big puppy! I was just sharing my thoughts on why she was already a year old. 🙂

          August 20, 2013 at 3:11 pm

I remember when they got Bo, he didn’t go to live with them until he had been well trained, so I’m sure Sunny has gone through the same regimen. The trainer at that time said that the hardest part is training the owners how to take over and continue the skills. Those two look like well behaved, well trained, happy dogs.
I also read that POTUS and FLOTUS made a donation to the D.C. Animal rescue and shelter in Sunny’s honor. Because of Malia’s allergies, they couldn’t take a chance on getting a dog with fur. It is the dander in dog fur which causes allergic reactions in some people. Portuguese waterdogs, poodles, and one or two other breeds have hair, therefore do not have the dander, therefore are good for people with allergies. Also, they do not shed, like dogs with fur. This is what makes their grooming quite an expense. If the PWDs are like poodles, their hair grows fast!

The Obamacare Opposition Has Finally Caught Its Own Tail

It’s time to pop the champagne and blow the kazoos: the war on Obamacare has officially reached its point of reductio ad absurdum. Two of the opposition’s favored fevered conspiracy theories about the law have clashed, like two asteroids headed for the planet that smash into each other before they can do any damage below….

….Do you see where this is headed? The law forces Congress and its staffers into the exchanges…the law, in theory, allows for plans with abortion coverage to be sold on the exchanges…and, voila, the crash in the skies above….

  6. August 20, 2013 at 2:01 pm

Brought over from end of previous post cause it’s such good news

New Abortion Restrictions in States Are 0 for 8 in Courts

State legislatures trying to curtail abortions have suffered a 0-for-8 losing streak after court challenges to their new laws this year.

The laws, all but one signed by Republican governors, drew on ideas from a playbook created by an anti-abortion group. Democrats plan to use the attempted curbs to boost 2014 congressional fundraising and increase voter support, calling the laws part of a “War on Women…..

I’ve been looking at so many articles I don’t know what I’ve seen or where!! LOL! Maybe I saw this here, but anyway here it is:

Push for a Government Shutdown Over Obamacare Falls on Hard Times

The GOP drive to defund Obamacare is leaking oil.

From the leaders of the GOP establishment to usual tea-party allies, a growing number of Republicans are splitting with movement conservatives who are pushing to shut down the federal government if funding is not cut off for President Obama’s health care law at the end of September….

    • August 20, 2013 at 3:02 pm

“Conservative groups accuse the GOP establishment of adopting a defeatist attitude. “You can’t win if you don’t fight, and the Republican Party—and the leadership in the party—has done nothing but cave, cave, and cave,” said Matt Hoskins, executive director of the Senate Conservatives Fund, a tea-party-aligned group that supports the defunding push.”

So conservatives think that the Republicans are caving (aha!) and the far left thinks the President is caving – both sides are demented.

      • August 20, 2013 at 3:30 pm

The President has never caved, but he has applied grassroots organizing techniques which activists don’t understand. It’s a different perspective. Smartypants has had some great posts about it. I’ve changed computers and don’t have the links.

One thing I like about Twitter so much is that I can block unwanted people. The far left and the far right are so noisy they suck up a lot of attention so I’m making a conscious decision to find good positive news about the President, economy, life and send it out into the world. I end up feeling so much better after I do and this is the very most positive space here. it’s a pleasure to stand with you for President Obama and the world we want to create with him.

        • August 20, 2013 at 7:07 pm

I love smarty pants and I’ve rad those posts too. The far left people just refuse to learn, because they think they already know better!

I wonder if budget cuts have anything to do about this. Veterans certainly aren’t a priority of the GOP although they have been by the President.

Figures show continued decline in disability backlog, but criticism persists

….In advance of the petition, submitted by the conservative group Concerned Veterans for America, the Department of Veterans Affairs released a fact sheet Monday reporting that the claims backlog of 490,000 claims pending more than 125 days is down by almost 20 percent from its highest point more than four months ago,….

….Obama told a veterans group this month that the administration was “turning the tide” in the effort to reduce the backlog. ””Today, I can report that we are not where we need to be, but we’re making progress,” Obama said in an address to the Disabled American Veterans’ convention in Orlando Aug. 10. “In the last five months alone, it’s down nearly 20 percent.”….

…Sen. Bernie Sanders, (I-Vt.), chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, said the figures show “significant” progress in reducing the long wait many veterans face to have their claims heard….

The VA said the measures it has taken to reduce the backlog, including reorganizations, new training and new technology, amount to “the largest transformation in its history to eliminate the backlog of disability compensation claims, and transform the way benefits and services are delivered to veterans, their families, and survivors.

Democrats turn up heat on Republican climate-change skeptics

….Four years ago, it was health care. This year many thought it would be immigration. But in California, global warming has become an unexpectedly hot topic….

….Many prominent Republicans agree that climate change is happening, including former Environmental Protection Agency heads from the Nixon, Reagan and both Bush administrations, as well as former Secretary of State George Shultz.

But a deep vein of skepticism runs among current Republican officeholders, which Democrats have exploited.

This week, President Barack Obama’s political arm, Organizing for America, fanned the flames, sending golden unicorn trophies to 135 Republican lawmakers, including Rohrabacher, for “exceptional extremism and ignoring the overwhelming judgment of science.”

“This award is designed to draw attention to the anti-reality and anti-science position that Rohrabacher and others in Congress have taken,” the group said in its release….

Another heads up: Any Twitter account that has the name “anonymous”, or anonPress office or any such variation is a Libertarian front group that DESPISES our President and anything remotely associated with him. They are VERY much pro-Greenwald and anything associated with him, including NSA outrage, firebaggery, drones outrage, etc. These groups were associated with the Occupy Wall Street (which was nothing but another Libertarian “movement” designed to thwart Barack Obama’s ability to fundraise for the 2012 campaign. It’s an organized group with monied interests seeing to create anarchy and destroy the US government, particularly as it’s headed by President Obama – I think Koch Brothers is one of their funders. They have managed to fool quite a few people – including some Obama supporters, but from day one my alarm bells were screaming.

If you look at their Twitter much of their venom seems to be direct at Barack Obama and few else (besides his supporters). The GOP is rarely, if ever mentioned in any of their TL’s.

I wanted so badly to go to this free event this Thursday at the Newseum about “Covering Civil Rights: On the Front Lines” hosted by my favorite radio talk show host Joe Madison with special appearance by MLK’s children. It would have been such an honor to meet them. But of course the free tickets were gone within 5 minutes of them posting the event. 😦

PPP will often poll stupid questions like this just to get a handle on, well, how stupid people are.

Schools have been effectively ‘shut down’. No one learns citizenship anymore, basic American history. No history of labor or the union movement. ‘creationism’ as science.

My friend’s daughter got a scholarship to a decent college. Are you ready for the classes of her first trimester?

        Japanese (one of her majors)
A course in how to be a freshman that lasts the entire trimester
        ‘Social relationships’.

That’s it. That’s what constitutes a freshman course load at a decent college.

The L.A Times had a story about an AA young man who received good grads at an under-achieving school in Los Angeles. He was accepted to UC Berkley on a scholarship and his first year he struggled with his writing and math classes. Many of the students coming out of public high schools even with scholarships are struggling to stay in college because they are unprepared and are not very mature. I can see sometime in the near future students are going to have to go to community colleges before they are allowed to go to Universities. Maybe there will be more Continuation classes to learn a skill instead of going to college right out of high school.

I asked the same question on Twitter. This is not a poll designed to highlight the ignorance of LA Republicans – we already know they are ignorant, Bobby Jindal is their Governor after all.

These polls are designed to spread misinformation. If you notice, they put the info out without EVER providing the proper context, or correcting the misinformation. They simply ask questions predicated on faulty assumptions (that Obama presided over hurricane Katrina), and then reporting the findings.

This is similar to the nonstop “birther” polls. Mark my word: You won’t see ANY polls put out by the MSM or polling outfits about Ted Cruz’ citizenship or place of birth…

The late journalist Michael Hastings had traces of drugs in his system when he died, the Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday.

Hastings was killed in a car crash in Los Angeles in June. He was 33.

The coroners who examined him found “traces of amphetamine in his system, consistent with possible intake of methamphetamine many hours before death, as well as marijuana,” the Times wrote. “Neither were considered a factor in the crash, according to toxicology reports.”

The ultimate verdict: Hastings’ death was an accident.

The coroner said Hastings’ family had been attempting to get him to go to detox at the time of his death, and that he had relapsed into drugs a month before he died, after 14 years of sobriety.

Hastings’ death prompted an outpouring of conspiracy theories. Elise Jordan, Hastings’ widow, rejected those theories in an interview with Piers Morgan in early August. She said she thought her late husband’s death was a “tragic accident.”

Former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) is being billed as the keynote speaker at a September conference sponsored by the Fatima Center, which one civil rights organization calls “the single largest group of hard-core anti-Semites in North America.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hatewatch blog noted on Tuesday that Paul had reportedly accepted the speaking engagement at the Fatima Center’s September “Fatima: The Path to Peace” conference in Canada.

Other speakers at the conference will include John Birch Society President John F. McManus, which has been accused of contributing to anti-Semitism for decades.
