Good for him: “As Harvey Milk said, we must give them hope. I go to give them hope”

The approaching end of the U.S. war in Afghanistan could help President Obama move toward what he has said he wanted to do since his first day in office: close the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Blocked by Congress from releasing or transferring many of the remaining 164 detainees and able to try only a small number of them, administration officials are examining whether the withdrawal of U.S. troops at the end of 2014 could open the door for some to challenge the legal authority of the United States to continue to imprison them.

      I love that News.

This POTUS is accountable to himself. He is methodologically cleaning up Clinton’s and GW Bush’s messes. Thank you Mr. president!

      • October 19, 2013 at 8:15 pm

Absolutely, Neena! And did you notice not a single member of congress has yelled “Guantanamo” for Al-Libi(the IT/OBL Mastermind behind the Kenyan/Tanzanian Embassy bombings) when he was arraigned in Federal court this past Tuesday. He was already indicted in NY ’98, that court has a 100% conviction rate on terrorism cases!

Duly noticed. They ONLY complain to embarrass or to inject Politics for their Own Gain and Gamesmanship.

RICHMOND, Va. — The federal government is again open for business, and Republicans in Washington are licking their wounds from the failed Tea Party attempt to derail President Obama’s health care overhaul. But here in Virginia’s capital, conservative activists are pursuing a hardball campaign as they chart an alternative path to undoing “Obamacare” — through the states.

One leading target is Emmett W. Hanger Jr., a Republican state senator from the deeply conservative Shenandoah Valley, who prides himself on “going against the grain.” As chairman of a commission weighing one of the thorniest issues in Virginia politics, whether to expand Medicaid under Mr. Obama’s Affordable Care Act, he is feeling heat from the Republican right. His openness to expansion has aroused the ire of Americans for Prosperity, the conservative advocacy group backed by the billionaire industrialist brothers Charles and David Koch. Dressed in emerald green T-shirts bearing the slogan “Economic Freedom in Action!” its members are waging what the senator calls “an attempt to intimidate me” in Richmond and at home. They have phoned his constituents, distributed leaflets and knocked on 2,000 doors in his rural district. When the Republican town committee met Monday night in Mr. Hanger’s home county, Augusta, Americans for Prosperity was there.

“This has been one of those trench warfare kind of efforts for a year now, and I think it is one of those hidden stories of the whole fight against Obamacare,” said Tim Phillips, president of Americans for Prosperity. “It’s not flashy; it’s just in a whole bunch of state capitals and in the districts of a whole lot of state legislators, but it’s such a crucial aspect of the overall long-term effort to roll back Obamacare.”

Noth called today’s legislative branch “the worst Congress since right before the Civil War” and explained why he sees “racist” undertones in the government shutdown and Birther claims and views the Tea Party as “un-American.”

Noth spoke the truth. SPEAK, sir. We can Hear you. Thank you.

In June 2009…..Jimmy Carter was the 1st public figure to speak out what he was seeing.

Honest Historians will Not be kind to the media, TBGOPers and many who stood idly by and said NOTHING. The 2 Bushes…..shame on them on this topic for the evil verbiages are coming mostly from their Party members and sympathizers.

Posted at the end of the last thread.

$13 billion is a lot of money, but it looks like JP Morgan had a loan loss reserve of $23 billion.

Somehow this seems so obscene to my way of thinking. As if they deliberately took some cover, knowing they would create chaos and hurt for many people. It is more than sickening, it is beyond the pale for immorality.

Why did the settlement not take the whole $23B? So, they have basically already written this off? And why exactly do people in Congress praise the head of JP Morgan as being some paragon of banking, when he’s basically just a sophisticated criminal with enough money to get away with it? Infuriating!

      • October 19, 2013 at 9:23 pm

“… he’s basically just a sophisticated criminal with enough money to get away with it …”

That’s precisely what we are confronting, theo.

That’s why the scale of the financial penalties must be significantly increased + assured jail time. As long as these dudes can hedge and not worry about incarceration, they’re going to continue. It’s the nature of avarice. It’s avarice that we need to crush.

        • 24 theo67
          October 19, 2013 at 9:26 pm

How do we do that, when the people in Congress who could make that happen are bought and paid for? After President Obama leaves office, I fear we’ll slip back on this front…

          • October 19, 2013 at 9:33 pm

It’s up to us, theo. If, for instance, our next President is Elizabeth Warren, we’d move way forward on these issues, rather than in reverse.

Young leaders like the Castro twins of Texas, Wendy Davis, AG Grimes of Kentucky …… a very long list … are not owned and are on the move.

The more women we get into the Senate & House the better.

We make the Country what we want it to be. That is the lesson plan President Obama has been teaching since his community organizing efforts.

If we match the zeal of the #teabaggers but remain focused on bending the arc of justice in a more inclusive, equitable and empowering direction we can achieve anything.

        From beebs

The fine would settle all potential civil action that might be taken against the bank in future but does not mean that criminal cases against individuals are ruled out, our correspondent adds.

JP Morgan had initially aimed to persuade US justice department officials to drop the criminal investigation but the attorney general ruled that out, reports said.

Yup. An overall win, which would have never happened if mittbot had won.
