        December 19, 2013 at 6:44 pm

Sorry Bob, just went back to the last thread and saw your note. I am presuming that Senator Reid scheduling votes into Sat evening is the reason for the freak out.

        • December 19, 2013 at 6:50 pm

That’s funny, Layla. I thought you were asking about the fella pictured in the tweet ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

Yes, Senator Reid is not in any way conceding to the attempts by Republicans to halt the approval of nominees. What he is thereby also doing is enabling Republicans to do really stupid stuff, politically and on record – like refusing to extend UI benefits, voting to KILL the Defense Programs Bill, allowing wind tax credits to expire when a simple unanimous consent (taking less time than for me to type this) would have allowed the extension … and on and on and on and on …. hurtful, dangerous acts against the people of the United States.

Lots of youtube gold for Dems in 2014.

First the Republicans drag out voting on the nominations after blocking them for an unprecedented time. Harry Reid goes nuclear with the rules to avoid the blockage. Mitch McConnell pledges to get back for this terrible decision to change the rules. So now that dragging out the nominations the GOP has decided the UI vote should be done in leu of finishing the nonessential nominations. More obstruction. Pretty lame.

        “A tough soldier

A short old man stands alone in a crowd of protesters. He doesnโ€™t join any of the chat groups on Maidan and doesnโ€™t walk around much. Instead, Oleksiy Kushnirchuk stands motionlessly, his back very straight and attentively catches every word coming from the stage.

When asked how old he is, Kushnirchuk replies, โ€œNot so old yet. Just 85.โ€ Kushnirchuk came to EuroMaidan on Dec. 18 from the village of Kosmach, in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, leaving behind his sick wife and a family of three children and seven grandchildren.

He spends every day on Independence Square, then goes off to sleep in a cold bus. He doesnโ€™t complain. During his adolescence, Kushnirchuk spent 2.5 years in the ranks of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), a paramilitary army that operated during World War II and fought against the Nazis, the Soviet Union and other enemies of Ukraineโ€™s independence.

Kushnirchuk says he fears nothing since the day he found the dead body of his sister, killed by Soviet security officers.

โ€œI become very angry when I hear about the customs union because itโ€™s like a new Soviet Union, where we were treated as slaves for 70 years,โ€ Kushnirchuk says, rapping out every word. ”

He’s just one of several Ukrainians featured in the story, Layla.

I didn’t understand something on the last thread. Did the GOP agree to vote on the Presiden’t nominees or not?

    • December 19, 2013 at 6:43 pm

Vicki, they can’t stop the votes. All they can do is force the full interval of debate time which is what they are doing. Senator Reid is bringing all the nominations he has scheduled to a vote. Some tonight at 1115p ET and tomorrow. The Yellen vote is scheduled for either 6 or 630p ET tomorrow.

      • 37 Vicki
        December 19, 2013 at 6:48 pm

That’s what I thought. The confusion was the tweet that said contradictory things. I’ll go reread the Reid tweet about first the GOP this and then the GOP that. or something.

Then there were 11 nominations and now the talk is about 4. Naturally I’d like the senate to be in permanent session until PBO gets whatever he needs.

      • December 19, 2013 at 8:06 pm

Correction: the Yellen vote is now scheduled for 6p ET Saturday.

    • December 19, 2013 at 7:10 pm

Who knows what the schedule will wind up being, but this is the latest:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Democratic-led U.S. Senate set debate to begin on Friday on President Barack Obama’s nomination of Janet Yellen to head the Federal Reserve, with confirmation expected on Saturday.
Democrats had hoped to confirm on Yellen on Thursday or Friday, and then adjourn for the year. But they failed to get a time agreement with Republicans to speed up the process.
Regardless, Yellen, now the Fed’s vice chair, is expected to be confirmed with bipartisan support to replace Ben Bernanke, whose term expires next month.
A senior Democratic aide said that unless a time agreement is suddenly reached, the Senate would begin consideration at close to midnight EST on Thursday (0500 GMT Friday) of Alejandro Mayorkas as deputy secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, the first of four of Obama’s pending nominees.
Under a tentative schedule and working around the clock, the Senate would vote to confirm Mayorkas before dawn on Friday, followed later in the day by John Koskinen to head the Internal Revenue Service and Brian Davis to be a federal judge in Florida.
The confirmation vote on Yellen is expected to occur at about 6 p.m. on Saturday (2300 GMT), the aide said.

    So Hello Everyone

My name is Linda and I used to post here all the time. I have been busy working and doing OFA stuff so I rarely post. That should change now than I am done teaching until August.

I also like to organize information. I have been making a page that will list all the 2014 races where we can make a difference.

I have made a humble beginning at this page

I have a fairly good list of close races in the house but could use advice and suggestions for races in the Senate, Governors, etc.

The idea is to have one spot we can go to to find information on Dems who are challenging vulnerable GOP candidates and also list Dems ho are vulnerable and need out support.

I will list the Dem candidate’s name, website, donation site, and place folks can volunteer to help their campaign.

Hi Linda!! Good to see you and thank you for all the incredible work you have been doing for OFA and for everyone who visits your website to mine the excellent resources you continue to compile.

    • December 19, 2013 at 8:22 pm

You provide such a valuable service.

Thank you for everything that you do. I hope that OFA is aware of what you’ve compiled.

I’ve posted this before, but it bears repeating (from Feb 2013):

      * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Vulnerable Republicans Side With Dems to Reauthorize VAWA
Every single voting House Republican from a district President Obama won last November supported the bill… Rep.Gary Miller, R-Calif., was absent, but his other 15 colleagues from Obama territory all voted yes. GOP Reps. Mike Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Peter King of New York, who represent the two districts Romney won most narrowly, also voted for the VAWA reauthorization.

Here are the 16 House Republicans from districts Obama carried in 2012:

CA Jeff Denham, David Valadao, and Gary Miller
      CO Mike Coffman
FL Bill Young and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
      IA Tom Latham
MN John Kline and Erik Paulsen
      NV Joe Heck
      NJ Frank LoBiondo Jon Runyan
      NY Michael Grimm, Christopher Gibson
      VA Scott Rigell
      WA Dave Reichert

      * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Bill Young passed away this year, and Tom Latham announced he won’t seek re-election next year.

For whatever reason, the URL that was posted in Feb no longer works (at least on my machine).

    Greetings all and sundry!

I can’t tell you how good it feels to feel human again. My cold is mostly done, just a little bit of sniffles.

Today I spent most of my day at our youth service’s holiday potluck. Towards the end we went around the table and said why we were glad to be children’s librarians.

Now, I’ve been thinking about jumping ship. Another local Los Angeles library has a position which has piqued my interest. But I don’t know if I’d be happier there. It’d eventually be more money, but I love working with my kids.

And today’s potluck reminded me of that. I know I need to advance my career, or should at any rate, but will that make me happier?

Anyway, just some thoughts before Christmas.

    • 77 99ts
      December 19, 2013 at 7:40 pm

Years ago, I took the promotion and the money – because ego, status, things, whatever – and my working life turned me into a misery – ended up retiring way early because I hated it so much. Mr 99 on the other hand, did an early mid life crisis, completely swapped careers – got to a level where he loved the work & refused any suggestions of a “management position” & is still working (& supporting us both).

It really does need much thought and discussion with family.

    • 78 jacquelineoboomer
      December 19, 2013 at 8:26 pm

LL – Whatever you decide, remember you are taking YOU with you! If you move to the other library, you will bring your enthusiasm and exuberance with you … so that, if those qualities aren’t already running rampant when you get there, they will be after you’re around for a while and it rubs off on the others. I took several promotions in my career and used to think “one day they’ll know I can’t do this,” or wonder if I’d like them at all, and then I found out I could whistle while I worked, so to speak, wherever I went! You’ll pick up what you need to know when you get there, and will look back on your hesitation with a chuckle.

Or you could just stay where you are, money isn’t everything, the kids you mention and your library setting seem ideal. You could just extend that happiness.

Can you tell I’m a Libra?

On another note…if any of you are interested in reading a new Kennedy book over the holidays, I just finished one, published this year. The title is: “These Few Precious Days: The Final Year of Jack with Jackie” by Christopher Andersen. I learned a lot in reading this book, and it touched my emotions too. One thing I learned is that JFK was a much sicker man than we were ever told…..more than his back, more than his Addison’s…..but Jackie said he never complained. Also, some intriguing inside stuff about the Cuban missile crisis and other events. Heartrending about the birth and death of their son Patrick in 1963. Well written, and resources are also given, which I appreciated very much. This is not second hand hearsay.

other than shaming them and asking students/young people to take all that is being offered by the ” Young people don’t enroll in ObamaCare rightwingers, have there been any efforts to directly confront the Koch Bros and those conservative groups?

If anyone has some feedback on these two possible course of actions we are exploring, then please give share it:

    (a) ask young people to delete the personal information on their medical bills and send them to these groups as a claim demanding compensation for asking them to not but insurance

    (b) students/young people collectively arguing the FTC or Consumer Protection Bureau or DOJ to sue these groups for false advertising – given that other organizations/companies that provide false medical information are routinely sued on behalf of the general public

    • December 19, 2013 at 8:19 pm

Choice “b” would be where I’d focus and I’d suggest you contact Secretary Sebelius, Senators Warren, Boxer & Cantwell and ask their assistance, as well as, contacting Jon Carson at OFA in case they have any plans.

    • December 19, 2013 at 9:13 pm

I am skeptical of MSM reporting that “young people don’t want medical insurance.”

If you’re taking a poll, let’s separate out men from women. It might be true of young men, but women have a monthly reminder of health care needs and if they are sexually active, first-hand knowledge of the importance of family planning. Young mothers are acutely aware of how important they are to their young children.

So I’m sure any MSM “polls” on this subject are mostly among young men.
