What #bridgegate tells us about the GOP

I know we’ve all had a laugh at New Jersey governor Chris Christie’s fall from grace. Documents have come to light that his top aides were involved in closing access lanes to the George Washington Bridge as political payback for the mayor of Fort Lee not giving Christie his endorsement for re-election. And his marathon news conference today, even though being massaged by the feckless national punditry, was a farce of gigantic proportions.

But there’s something serious underlying the Christie debacle.

In a fit of vindictiveness, he either ordered an act which would perforce put lives at risk, or, like Henry II, mumbled “Will no one rid me of this turbulent mayor”, and loyal aides knowing his bent acted upon his ambiguous wishes. Either way, Christie does not come off well.

His press conference was a master class in GOP damage control. He spent the majority of the conference in casting himself as the victim. Another chunk he spent in excoriating his mendacious staff for lying to him. (Note, he was angry for them “lying” to him, not for their actions.) He spared almost no thought for the very real danger in which he put the people he was elected to serve.

That speaks to the core of the modern Republican Party. It really has no concern for regular people. They’re merely voters to be conned into supporting the party. Once electoral success is achieved, they can be dispensed with as so many pawns on chessboard. The GOP playbook when caught in malfeasance is to cast about for blame, play the victim, and ignore the real damage done. We see this in the fight over unemployment insurance. Anyone with a soul would realize that there people who are still feeling the aftershocks of the Great Recession, and that help is still needed. But those people are so much chaff for a wider political agenda, which is to destroy the last vestiges of the Great Society, which the modern GOP hates with a visceral hatred.

Christie is merely the grandest expression of a deeply seeded Republican pathology. Republicans love their country; they just happen to hate most of the people who inhabit it. People are merely means to an end, and that end is power. The powerful to whom they’re handmaidens have no concern for ordinary people, and that mindset informs their political minions. One could say that their worldview boils down to “The beatings will continue until morale improves”; however, they don’t care about morale, they just employ the beatings to maintain control.

So, as we chuckle and chortle at Chris Christie, remember that the clown masks a deadly serious persona. The bullying, the misanthropy, and the lack of empathy are not bugs; they’re a well-designed feature

Yep. Elected ‘Republicans’ and their #NEWSTAINER buddies serve the needs of a handful of plutocrats. They have no other loyalty.

    I repeat.

    In My Humble Opinion….

I’m inclined to believe that there was some serious bullying going on in Jersey and the Dem leadership in that state didn’t want to rock the boat with him. He was endorsed by democratic mayors, pastors, assemblymen, state senators and other leadership in the state. I think he had a stronghold on lots of people there. My hope and wish it that this all comes out in this investigation. The notion that so many dems voted for this bully simply because of his pushy, arrogant, in your face persona is beyond my comprehension. There is more to this than meets the eye. Why else would they go after this small town mayor because he wouldn’t fall in line? They were used to getting everyone on board with them and were determined to make an example of this mayor to keep everyone else in line. It’s corruption at its best.

Someone in Christie’s inner circle just pleaded the fifth, oh dear!

    LL you are correct.

One thing is Clear……to Me. Christie believes his Fakeness. That will be and has been his weakest link and that will become his undoing…….Look at what he did just to Win this re-election? $24M spent to eliminate a viable Dem Senatorial candidate…..in an election Christie was beating his opponent by 30% points? Many of those who voted for Christie will not support him ever again.

This was crossing the Line. Christie will Not win eventually.

How many times (and in how many different ways) can Jay tell the TMZ jackals that President Obama is not focused on Bridge-gate or the Gates memoir.

President Obama asked for the NSA review. Ace reporter Ann Compton wants to know if President Obama will take any executive actions. Jay is basically telling her to read the report. Duh. Now she wants to know the status of the state of the union speech.

In their worldview…..POTUS must obey and do as they do obsessively.

Poor idiots. They think that they matter, They don’t and they can’t accept it that this POTUS is not reactionary as they are.

Per Jay, POTUS spoke with Gates this past weekend when he heard that Gates had injured himself. The next question was about the Book and Jay said: The book was not out yet and No discussion were about that.

So these Idiots think that McConnell appearing before POTUS’ event this afternoon is indicative of wanting Mitch M. to win in November? Jay chuckled and said No.

So, a bit of AWESOME news: The missus was accepted to El Camino College! She’s going to be a sultry student, get her RN, and dress in schoolgirl clothing for me. (Maybe not the last part.)

‘The GOP playbook when caught in malfeasance is to cast about for blame, play the victim, and ignore the real damage done. ‘

And in this one area all GOPs seem very well-trained! My only fear this time is that media will make a lot of fuss now, and in a year or two they will throw open the door for Christie should he be in the running again. I remember that Mark Sanford did his media apology dance, waited things out for a couple of years, then returned to ‘calmly’ regain his seat. I’ll wait patiently to see how Christie plays out in the long run.

Great post/comments! I think what you’ve illustrated has the potential to intertwine with Rachel Maddow’s pretty awesome theory from last night: this whole debacle might have been retaliation and retribution targeted NOT at the mayor of Fort Lee, but instead at state Senator Loretta Weinberg, the Majority Leader whose district coverage includes Fort Lee (in part to a major disagreement in regards to the NJ Supreme Court). This wouldn’t surprise me….
