      My new son-in-law greeted me with a beard when I went to Chicago to visit right after Xmas. He had sported the after five needs a shave look previously. I preferred it to the beard, but had a chance to think about what I would say if asked since I saw a photo on FB with the beard. Of course, the first thing my daughter asks is what I think of his beard. I was prepared saying I think to have or not have a beard is something the person and their spouse needs to decide, no one else. Glad I thought about it ahead.

    [Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon] has now responded with a letter to constituents in which he comes out against holding a vote on the sanctions bill right now. Here’s the key quote from the letter, which was passed along by a source:

    “At this time I do not support additional sanctions legislation because I share the views of many foreign policy experts that it could undermine the ongoing negotiations and weaken our multinational coalition, ultimately making less likely our goal of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.”

    Merkley’s opposition in particular suggests how this debate may unfold going forward. With around 30 Senate Democrats remaining quiet on the vote, it may require questions from constituents to get them to declare their positions. […..]

      UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who also tells me he does not support moving forward with the sanctions bill at this time.

      “I won’t be signing on to it,” Murphy told me. ”I think it risks blowing up the negotiations or at the very least allows for countries like Russia and China to start weakening existing sanctions.”

    Russians negotiating with Iran on Oil? Is US satisfied with it or does the deal undermine the terms of the P5+1.

    Jay is concerned if true. It would potentially trigger sanctions. US will continue to look into it.

    If Russia is dealing with Iran would that then Not warrant more sanctions. Jay agreed if the story was true.

    Executive Initiative? Jay said for them to wait until the SOTU address. I don’t believe that POTUS is using more executive orders more than, say, GWBush. Bush used 289 by now and PBO has used 149.
    Jay did say that perhaps they should check with the WHPC historian…..Mockingly……to get the exact numbers.

    Now Immigration and Executive orders. Nope the ADM position has Not changed. Senate passed the bill. It is not a hard job to do ad to get done. The House needs to pass the bill. The ADM remains optimistic on CIR in 2014.

    Those who are disappointed about 15 Dems or so going bat poop fatuous on the Iran sanctions are doing so for 2 reasons.

    AIPAC and the number of people in the senate who have Jewish heritage in the senate. 11 or 13. The most in our history.

    There re 20 Women in the senate. That makes a difference. The more the senate has a Diverse make up, the better. Dems have always been more supportive of Israel in our history than the GOP. Today, the GOP has Endtime faddish.

    What needs to change here is NOT name calling against those 15 or so Dems. What needs to change is for POTUS to speak to the nation, Prime Time and explain why the P5+1 is important. If POTUS does that, within 24 hours, those 15 would drastically change. The POTUS has got to stop playing quiet diplomacy with warmongers. The Nation at large needs to be informed and prompto.

      Thank you nena20409 for all your reporting today. I only saw the thank you and goodbye WHP briefing today by the fabulous Jay “wolfman” Carney.

      I think however the president has been anything BUT quiet with the senate. Jay has openly confirmed he would veto any bill passed. Yet the latest “news” report has numbers increasing in the senate to overcome a veto. I’m not sure if I believe that. I even heard talk of a bill giving the p5+1 time to work ( a year) before more sanctions would go into place. I’ve been hearing about this growing support for more sanctions every since this preliminary agreement for talks. I also listen at work to the state.gov briefings from SOS Kerry’s office. He too has been urging the senate to leave this alone and not scuttle the chances of diplomacy working.

      When the talks were first announced I listened to a UK parliament q and a. There was much concerned mentioned about the US, in particular congress was mentioned. The reps were urging the PM to make it clear to the US. The PM ( blank on name and see face) was very clear that President Obama was fully committed. That word was his, and I felt it carried weight. They know he is nothing to play with. So…really as much as this pains me I know HE did not do all this hard work, bringing all these nations together for the toughest sanctions,and this chance for direct talks to let a few mealy mouthed senators jettison it.

      As far as the nation needing to BE informed we all need to get ourselves informed! One thing is clear we have no desire for another war, not even your every day republican. They may be satisfied with some Obama derangement just say no, but democrats would not be. If talks get scuttled would any of those 30 dems, including Schumer be ready to accept ANY responsibility? NO.

      I trust the president has this, though I’m sure he and his admin appreciate hearing from informed citizens.

    I am Not a Fan of Jon Huntsman or Joe Manchin. Both were governors. Both are Not buying whatever Christie is selling and neither did Randell from PA on Politics Nation, yesterday.

    Huntsman, who appeared on MSNBC Tuesday with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va), also a former governor of that state, said that gubernatorial offices are structured so tightly that everyone would be aware of such an action “down to, you know, a minuscule details.” (sic)

    “But I have to tell you that having run a governor’s office — and Joe has done the same thing, and every governor’s office, whether your state is large or small, it’s pretty much organized the same way,” he said, as quoted by the Washington Post. “Your neighbor is a chief of staff, and your deputy chief of staff is just right down the hall. And everybody knows, day in and day out, what’s playing out in your state. Down to, you know, a minuscule details.”

    If anyone read the article linked yesterday entitled “The Rise of the Chris Christie Democrats”, you’ll see how he was able to get elected. He made alliances and each side got something. The dem. boss in south Jersey was being investigated by Corzine so he gave his support to Christie and the investigations stopped. The Essex county executive is corrupt but he gave Christie his support and there are no investigations. Buono was not part of the good old boys and girls network and could not be bought so she paid the price. I am disgusted by this state. Christie in actuality has done nothing for this state but he has promoted himself and the people voted for his celebrity.

    I’ve got a pen and I’ve got a phone — and I can use that pen to sign executive orders and take executive actions and administrative actions that move the ball forward in helping to make sure our kids are getting the best education possible and making sure that our businesses are getting the kind of support and help they need to grow and advance to make sure that people are getting the skills that they need to get those jobs that our businesses are creating.

    And I’ve got a phone that allows me to convene Americans from every walk of life — non-profits, businesses, the private sector, universities — to try to bring more and more Americans together around what I think is a unifying theme: making sure that this is a country where if you work hard, you can make it.
