Early Bird Chat

Completely Random Old Pic – Pete Souza: “A nice way to celebrate the New Year for the President was to jump in the ocean in his native state of Hawaii. He was on his annual Christmas vacation with family and friends, and went swimming at Pyramid Rock Beach in Kaneohe Bay.” Jan. 1, 2012

gm desert flower – enjoy your day – hoping your governor is sane enough to throw away the latest bill on her desk.

It’s just simply AMAZING to me that she said that she “has to think it over” WTF!!! There’s NOTHING TO THINK OVER!! I’m so sick and tired of the stupid, ugly mess coming from the RW, bought and paid for lawmakers here, I could puke. I am SO over this!

anyway….your day is nearly done, I’m guessing….but have a restful night.

Df, the club for people with pukey governors is large. I’m a certified member from PA.

We have way too many in my world at the minute – doing some horrible things (although not fixated with women & sex as are the RWNJs in the US). I think they are being such a disaster they will hopefully not last too long – we seem too lazy as a group to be out marching in the streets. It seems in Arizona many have much more get up and go – so things may change.

Well…this has managed to bring a lot of different people together, which is the upside of this nasty bill. One reason people are willing to get off their butts and show up and protest is the weather. It’s perfect right now. If this happened in the summer, people would be out, but not like they are now. Glad to see them wake up and speak up. I hope this shines a bright light on the nutjobs in the AZ legislature and makes people question what the heck they’re doing there in the first place!

Good morning Chips and the morning crew. To anyone who’s near a glorious body of aqua colored water who can actually swim in it (minus the gorgeous president) congratulations! To the rest of us–stuck in winter with snow on the way–keep on pressing on. I still have the ‘Press On’ button that Linda offered to us in 2011 at What is Working. It seems just right for this winter.

Some Georgia legislators are attempting to follow in the footsteps of the Arizona deranged….

“Ga. looks at Preservation of Religious Freedom Act”

House Bill 1023 will allow denial of services based on religious grounds

It was first passed by the House and Senate in Arizona and now it appears Georgia is following suit and considering a “religious rights” bill that could provide a wider berth of protection for people, government employees and businesses to deny services to people because of their religious convictions.

Georgia House Bill 1023 is called the “Preservation of Religious Freedom Act.” Hearings in both the House and the Senate judiciary committees were held Monday afternoon to debate the measure…House Bill 1023 would allow individuals, businesses and government employees to deny services based on religious grounds. Rep. Sam Teasley authored the bill, which is sponsored by four other representatives.

While many Georgians feel the bill would be a step in the wrong direction, others maintain it’s a freedom protected under the Constitution and one that should be celebrated.

Georgia isn’t the only state considering a measure like House Bill 1023. Tennessee, South Dakota, Kansas and Mississippi are considering similar legislation.

SW, how come it isn’t unconstitutional to discriminate at random against people ‘you don’t like’ or approve of. There’s got to be a massive court challenge in here somewhere. How is this different from “Whites Only” or Irish Need Not Apply” or “No Jews?”

      • February 25, 2014 at 8:20 am

“…how come it isn’t unconstitutional to discriminate at random against people β€˜you don’t like’ or approve of…How is this different from ‘Whites Only’ or ‘Irish Need Not Apply’ or ‘No Jews?'”

I’ve no clue JackieG. It is no different. And while the discrimination this bill would allow seems to be focused on the LGBT community, it opens doors for all those other discriminations that the GOP likes to claim no longer exists (and therefore their belief that we need no regulatory laws).

At this point, we can only hope that the GA legislators will vote down this proposed bill.

Is the ALEC group behind all these bills – I have a vision of half a dozen white guys heads together – playing poker – drinking whiskey and wondering what to do next to ruin another few states with these bills. The people who take them up are more insane than the ones who design them.

      • February 25, 2014 at 8:56 am

I so agree with you 99…

we need to keep in mind something that LL wrote last year which has also been echoed by smartypants and others…that the GOP and their meisters…are in their last throes …the beast is dying …this is their attempt to thwart what smartypants called the “coalition of the ascedant”…my concern…whereas Alec…the RW super pacs and even RW media seem to be on the same page and have some organization about them….we in the “coalition” appear to be fractured….fighting separate battles on many fronts…women’s rights, voting rights, workers’ rights, immigration, LGBT…etc…this coalition needs to be an actual coalition…something that the Moral Monday Marchers have been able to do…

these attacks on the “Coaliton of the Ascedant” will not end and in fact they will increase…

while we continue to wage battles in our own particular area of concern…we must not lose sight of the BIG picture…we must find a way to come together…with a strategy that links all of our struggles….

        YES WE CAN!….YES WE MUST!…

Pf, I agree with you ++++ a million. We have got to get our act together and coalesce around one goal—-getting a working U.S.Congress in 2014 and replacing insane governors and state legislators with sane ones.

          • February 25, 2014 at 10:43 am

            GM Jackie…

the issues are what motivate follks to action…folks do not come to the poles just because…there must be a connection of the struggles …a realization that politics is indeed local…and what happens in our state can thwart what happens on the Federal Lever and ultimately stymie PBO’s agenda for We The People…

PBO has said that one of the greatest threats to democracy is a “cynical” electorate…an electorate without hope…

i get so many emails from the DEMS …messages of panic and gloom….who is motivated by that…they seem to have learned nothing from PBOs message of hope and change…they do not seem movtivated by PBOs called for a year of action…’

the protests taking place around the country…show that WE THE People…are moving Forward>>>

Hmmm….when the new late night shows debut with appearances from people connected to PBO (e.g., FLOTUS, VP Biden), shouldn’t that tell us something? It tells me something for sure. I don’t see the shows opening with Rand Paul, or Bobby Jindal, or Palin….

Local Chgo news just interviewed Mayor Rahm in front of the WH. He’s there for PBO’s big announcement re. Chicago being awarded the big digital manufacturing hub, bringing together “brains and brawn”, as Emanuel kept saying. The brain source, and what made Chgo attractive, were the 3 most excellent universities here—-U. of Chgo., U. of Il. Chgo. and Northwestern—–and the brawn supplied by the hard working people of the city of “big shoulders”. It should help ensure Chgo’s economic future.
Emanuel was also asked about the Polar Plunge Sunday with Jimmy Fallon——a jump into frigid Lake Michigan to raise money for the Special Olympics. Started with Emanuel promising the leap if Chgo kids read over 2 million books over the summer, which they did. Then Fallon asked Rahm to be a guest on his new show and Rahm said he would if Jimmy would jump with him. Fallon agreed and now is tweeting about it with the hashtag swimmyjimmy. πŸ™‚

Dreadful, dreadful. I drove through the Peace River district 3 times, way way back, before the Alaskan pipeline was built, even! It was so essentially beautiful, the light and the environment so deeply magnificent, I felt as if I was no longer on the Earth. For decades after, it remained a safe place in my mind, one which I often considered returning to, permanently. Now it has been destroyed. Contaminated for perhaps millennia. My heart breaks. Shame, shame and degradation on the oil companies ~ may they never, ever find forgiveness. In this world or the next.

Hey Mark……we rely on you to do the counting of all things …..Can you tell us how 440,000 Army troops are somehow LESS than the 420,000 troop levels required by the Republican Sequester ?

Also…..how does MORE money equal LESS money them ? Will the media please explain…?

And just, perhaps, PBO will explain to boner that SOTH is ACTUALLY a job, with RESPONSIBILITIES to the American People, not just to the republican party and it’s shameful, selfish agenda. Hello, boner. Please pay attention, you may learn something. Dufus.
