“Celebrating Black History Month: African-American Female Firsts”

In celebration of Black History Month, we take a look at some of the African-American women who were pioneers in their field. Whether it was business or entertainment, they crossed both racial and gender boundaries and continue to inspire today.

    • February 26, 2014 at 7:47 am

Wow, that’s a fantastic link swbluega, absolutely amazing photos of those women, such incredible stories.

      • February 26, 2014 at 7:55 am

The earlier ones were especially a lesson for me as well as inspiring. Their accomplishments are even more impressive given the obstacles I’m sure they had to overcome to achieve them.

        • February 26, 2014 at 8:03 am

And so many life stories we rarely, if ever, hear about swbluega. I understand why some people object to Black History Month, that black history shouldn’t be separated from ‘just history’, but it’s an opportunity to highlight the stories of women like these, whose history is rarely told.

Sw, how I wish American history textbooks were written with these great women in mind. Children spend so many years in school learning that white men did everything important in history. Little minds warped from day one.

sw, I know this post has ended, but I wanted to thank you very much for posting this link in celebration of our Sheroes (what an inspiring group of women). I look forward to reviewing again with my 11 y/o granddaughter.

      Thanks again.

Good morning Chips, SW and Africa. It’s bleak, cold and snowy this morning and the long range forecast says there’s more of the same on the way. Hope all of your worlds are sunny. By the way, I love the photo. Anything with a smiling FLOTUS brightens the day.

Good Morning JackieG. Barring any further extremes with the weather, just think… we’re one day closer to spring and tell yourself, “This too shall pass.”

Hope you have a wonderful day. 🙂

Sw, I try, I really do. It’s just hard to face the bitter cold everyday. We had one warm day in the high 40’s over the weekend and it made me weep with joy not to shiver when I went out the door.

        • February 26, 2014 at 8:23 am

I understand Jackie. It’s always easy to spout platitudes when you’re on the outside looking in. But I am sympathetic to all of you who have had little or no respite from the snow, ice, and freezing temperatures over these past months.

Africa, in the lists of brave women that we’ve learned about in Black History month, the mothers of slain children should have a prominent place. The courage of these mothers is unimaginable.

      From the article….http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2014/02/i-am-still-called-by-the-god-i-serve-to-walk-this-out/284064/

“The progeny of the plundered were all around me in West Baltimore—were, in fact, me. No one was amused. If I were to carve out some peace myself, I could not be amused either. I think I lost some of myself out there, some of the softness that was rightfully mine, to a set of behavioral codes for addressing the block. I think these talks that we have with our sons—how to address the police, how not to be intimidating to white people, how to live among the singularly plundered—kill certain parts of them which are as wonderful as anything. I think the very tools which allow us to walk through the world, crush our wings and dash the dream of flight…

This is how it is for our young Blk Men….I never had sons…but I have two grandsons…it brings me to tears…angers me…sometimes makes me feel helpless…that is why the attacks on the PBO cut me so deep….

the initiative directed to Blk and Brwn young men that PBO is starting is so very important….so very important….

      Press Onnnnnnnnnnnnnnn…We have no choice!!….

PF, thank you for this deeply moving article. None of us can rest until this country grows up and faces its sin of racism. We all have a stake in raising a generation of black leaders who refuse to put another generation through this hell. President Obama by is very existence contradicts every racist preconception the ignorant carry about them and it kills them. When they don’t have bigotry to cling to, they have nothing.

P.S. Sent you an e-mail. Hope you got it.

Chips, does Danny drive yet? Was just reading about 2 doggies, Roscoe and Luna, who were left in their owner’s truck while he went inside a home, got tired of waiting, put the truck in gear and took off. Luckily they made their way down the road without incident past other drivers, joggers etc. and ended up in a river bed. I bet the drivers who passed by the truck driving dogs did a double take. Truck was damaged, Roscoe and Luna are ok, and were laughing their heads off about the joy ride they pulled off.

Off the planet impressive – everything this POTUS and FLOTUS do has positive results – despite some try not to believe it

“Another possible explanation is that some combination of state, local and federal policies aimed at reducing obesity is starting to make a difference. Michelle Obama, the first lady, has led a push to change young children’s eating and exercise habits and 10,000 child care centers across the country have signed on. The news announcement from the C.D.C. included a remark from Mrs. Obama: “I am thrilled at the progress we’ve made over the last few years in obesity rates among our youngest Americans.””

Good morning and congrats to africa!! Love the photo…as is often the case, it looks like no one else is around and they are engrossed only in each other:) I love that about them.

    Then there’s this:

Perhaps unsurprisingly, a Tampa Bay Times study from 2012 shows that “as ‘stand your ground’ claims have increased, so too has the number of Floridians with guns. Concealed weapons permits now stand at 1.1 million, three times as many as in 2005 when the law was passed.” Put bluntly: As Floridians sense that other Floridians plan to shoot first, they buy more guns. Think about it: The National Rifle Association that has pushed so hard for “stand your ground” laws in recent years is the same National Rifle Association that has put so many guns, and such lethal guns, in so many hands—concealed carry, open carry, wave-it-around-and-call-it-free-speech carry. The gun lobby has single-handedly made certain that the very definition of what one might reasonably expect from an altercation at a Walmart, a movie theater, or a gas station has changed. By seeking to arm everyone in America, the NRA has in fact changed our reasonable expectation of how fights will end, into a self-fulfilling prophecy about how fights will end. It should surprise you not at all to learn that of the 10 states with the most lenient gun laws in America, seven support “stand your ground.” In those jurisdictions shooting first isn’t merely “reasonable.” It borders on sensible.

    Rinse, lather repeat.

    • 67 dotster3
      February 26, 2014 at 8:44 am

Every day I read more gun preposterousness. Saw yesterday that the Repub dominated Indiana legislature approved a measure to allow guns in cars in school parking lots. Why??? It seems the NRA and related business interests won’t be satisfied until everyone is packing—-what’s next—-a gun in every elementary school kid’s backpack?

      • 68 99ts
        February 26, 2014 at 8:49 am

Lots of road rage in school parking lots – might as well sort it out with guns at 9am. Sigh

President Obama Rips Fox News Misleading People About Obamacare

//President Obama got in a strong jab at Fox News tonight for their constant misleading of people about the ACA….Like all of the best presidential take downs, this one was delivered in the form of a joke. It was clear whom the president was talking about. Republicans who get bad information from watching the wrong newscast. Obama was clearing describing Fox News, and that tiny segment of America known as Fox News viewers.

The president’s description was deadly accurate. Fox News viewers are certain that they are right about the ACA, when it is clear that they have been blatantly misled, and possess very few facts about the healthcare law. It is nearly impossible to reason with one of these individuals because they have been subjected to endless hours of propaganda that has been disguised as news.

Considering what the ACA has been up against, it is amazing that the White House is on target to meet their enrollment goals. The Koch brothers have been spending millions of dollars the Republican Party has been on the attack non-stop for years, and the top cable news network in the country pounds out a daily endless drumbeat of anti-ACA propaganda. //

      February 26, 2014 at 8:51 am

I wish there was a national campaign to mock those who watch FOXNews—-billboards, signs on overpasses etc. I can never believe the high ratings that channel gets when all they’re doing is feeding their viewers lies and propaganda. FOX is one of the reason why we have so many uninformed dummies in this country—–and nutty and extreme people voted into our congress.

CBO Teaches Republicans a Lesson: Governing Is Hard

    By Jonathan Cohn

That money helps finance the expansions of Medicaid and new federal tax credits that will allow millions of Americans either to get insurance or, at the very least, get coverage at much lower costs. Eliminating that money altogether, as Republicans typically propose, means either fewer people get help or deficits go up.

And that’s the reality Obamacare’s critics are never willing to confront. They’re great at attacking Obamacare. But they’re lousy at coming up with alternatives that look better by comparison. There’s a reason for that. The downsides of Obamacare are real, but, in many cases, they make possible the upsides. Take away the former and the latter go away, too.

Why Republicans Will Never Stop Lying About Obamacare

    By Gene Lyons

Politically speaking, here’s the thing about those melodramatic ads attacking the Affordable Care Act currently running on TV: In terms of actual policy, they’re as futile as the 40-odd votes to repeal the law that House Republicans have already cast.

GOP hardliners are like a drunk in a bar fight threatening to whip somebody twice his size if only his friends would let go of his arms.

It’s all over but the shouting.
Indeed, governors and legislatures in previously recalcitrant states including New Hampshire, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Utah and Virginia are considering Medicaid expansion they’d previously shunned.

Is It Mean to Debunk Lies About Obamacare?

    By Jonathan Chat

Some eight months before the midterm elections, the airwaves are being flooded with the sad tales of Obamacare victims. The tales all fall into the same predictable rut. First, the poor victim steps forward to share his (or, more frequently, her) tale of deprivation. Then reporters discover the putative victim is either a non-victim, or possibly a beneficiary, of Obamacare. Then conservatives get angry.
So the new rule in conservative media is that, if you have a terrible enough disease, your claims can be used in attack ads and any reporter who tries to verify them is insensitive to their illness. Too bad conservatives hadn’t discovered this principle in 2012, because it would have been fun to watch them defending that ad featuring a man blaming Mitt Romney for his wife’s death.

Until then, singling out only gay people to be subject to a proprietor’s “religious values” sounds more like rationalization for hate than anything to do with “religious values”.
