Who wants a Manhattan? I’m using the real shit, Wild Turkey 81.

Just had one … I used Maker’s Mark. Ok LL? Didn’t have it straight up tonight … had it on the rocks; every once in a while, I like it that way.

      • March 6, 2014 at 10:06 pm

One of our favorite places is Killer Shrimp in the Marina. We went there Sunday for happy hour. Well cocktails were $6. Their well bourbon? Effing Bulleit Rye! That costs a pretty penny at BevMo. It was the beginning of a long Oscar night.

Wow. Will have to check it out LL. Do you use bitters in your Manhattan? I used to … I make mine on a sweeter side now and use an orange liquer …. from Grand Marnier (if I feel like splurging) to Triple Sec. Tonight I used Citron orange liquer. This may be in violation of your Manhattan code, so sorry. But I do love Manhattans …. and they are the loveliest cocktail ever!

          • March 6, 2014 at 10:13 pm

Yep, bitters for me. I’ll have to try your recipe.

3 parts bourbon to one part sweet vermouth to 1/2 part Triple Sec, or Grand Marnier or …. shaken over ice and strained immediately into a chilled martini glass … drop that cherry in … take a picture than sip and enjoy! Or as I said sometimes just combine all over ice in an old fashion glass and enjoy. One of the best Manhattans I ever had was at the Oxford House (no longer in business alas) in Oxford, CT at a wedding reception and it was on the rocks (I had never had one on the rocks before) and it was delicious. My preferred is straight up as described above.

My hearty congratulations to the missus too LL. I was watching Rachel’s documentary, so got the news now. I’m happy for both of you. the possibilities sound marvelous. Her happiness in the job is, I know, of utmost importance to you also. You two have made much progress of different kinds in a year!

Oh yes…..the Iraq war was just what we all thought it was about: OIL for the wealthy British and American companies, and there is documentation that the Iraq invasion was being planned ten days after GWB’s inauguration. President Obama has had to clean up more than any of us even imagined.

        • March 6, 2014 at 10:27 pm

And just imagine how much easier it would have been to deal with Putin without Iraq hanging around our necks. Bush will never serve a day in jail; hopefully, the disdain which history will show him will be an object lesson to future Presidents.

US office supplier Staples said it will close 225 stores in North America, more than 10% of its presence, as shoppers move online and its sales slump.

Sales in the final three months of the financial year fell 10.6% to $5.87bn (£3.5bn), the retailer said in a statement.

Staples has 1,846 stores in the US and Canada after closing 42 stores in 2013.

The company said the closure will help it save $500m of costs a year by the end of 2015.

The company’s shares fell by almost 16% in New York trading.

From Nixon to Reagan to Gingrich to Bush to Paul Ryan and Chris Christie today, leaders who’ve shifted America to the right have been aided by moderating misrepresentations. In the case of Reagan, it was not just the man, but conservatism itself that received the flattering reinterpretation. That was a difference that mattered; it goes to the heart of why Reagan is the American right’s touchstone. But the more general process of misrepresenting and reinterpreting increasingly radical ideological figures as if they were normal, everyday pragmatic problem-solvers is one that’s been a repeated leitmotif in America’s political trajectory since Richard Nixon’s political resurrection in 1968.

Key to this progression has been the fact that, rather than building cumulatively on successes, more often than not conservative succession has been built on successive failures — each one sold as a “common sense” way of dealing with the chaos created by previous conservative incarnation. Reagan succeeding Nixon was closest to being the exception to this rule. Nixon exploited and began consolidating the racial divisions that fractured the New Deal majority, a process briefly interrupted by Jimmy Carter, and Reagan finished that process of consolidation. He did so, however, by radically altering the tone, if not the substance. Thereafter, however, the pattern held with remarkable consistency.

Read the article on the previous post about the Georgia takeover in 2008. The author said Russia does want its empire back, something I have contended since this Ukraine invasion began. The reason Putin was able to do it successfully was because the U.S. was preoccupied with and weakened by its problems in the Middle East. WELL……since then we are out of Iraq, closing down Afghanistan, have dealt with Qaddafi, taken out OBL, are settling Syria, and Putin has not caught up. There is a new sheriff in town, and Pooty can’t fool this one or push him around. Another mess PBO has had to deal with, legacy of GWB, and YES, Ms. Lindsey needs to admit that any problems are the legacy of GWB’s total loss of credibility, NOT any action in Benghazi. How long will we suffer from GWB and Cheney????

    it must be frustrating to little putin to see that PBO is NOT allowing him to use the Ukraine crisis as a pretext to kill more ordinary Ukranians;

I am personally very impressed by the level of restraint that PBO, Team-Obama, Ukrainians have shown in the face of such blatant aggression!

For Immediate Release March 06, 2014

Readout of President Obama’s call with President Putin of Russia

President Obama spoke for an hour this afternoon with President Putin of Russia. President Obama emphasized that Russia’s actions are in violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, which has led us to take several steps in response, in coordination with our European partners. President Obama indicated that there is a way to resolve the situation diplomatically, which addresses the interests of Russia, the people of Ukraine, and the international community. As a part of that resolution, the governments of Ukraine and Russia would hold direct talks, facilitated by the international community; international monitors could ensure that the rights of all Ukrainians are protected, including ethnic Russians; Russian forces would return to their bases; and the international community would work together to support the Ukrainian people as they prepare for elections in May. President Obama indicated that Secretary Kerry would continue discussions with Foreign Minister Lavrov, the government of Ukraine, and other international partners in the days to come to advance those objectives.

A missing 11-year-old boy in India has been found after he was spotted by a member of the public who received a WhatsApp alert sent out by police.

Police in the northern town of Bareilly say they used the instant messaging service to send out the boy’s photo to several mobile phones in the area.

A man travelling on a train, who had received the alert, recognised the boy sitting near him and called the police.

India has more than 900 million mobile users and WhatsApp is hugely popular.

Happy Friday!! This is the weekend everyone but me messes with their clocks:) Spring FORWARD!

Anyway, big HEAD’S UP for these corporate bill mill lovers and haters of democracy…

Now the council is looking to take its blueprint for influence over statewide lawmaking and drill it down to the local level. It has already quietly set up, and is making plans for the public launch of, an offshoot called the American City County Exchange (ACCE) that will target policymakers from “villages, towns, cities and counties”.

The new organisation will offer corporate America a direct conduit into the policy making process of city councils and municipalities. Lobbyists acting on behalf of major businesses will be able to propose resolutions and argue for new profit-enhancing legislation in front of elected city officials, who will then return to their council chambers and seek to implement the proposals.

In its early publicity material, Alec says the new network will be “America’s only free market forum for village, town, city and county policymakers”. Jon Russell, ACCE’s director, declined to comment on the initiative.

Everyone that supports this, is a member of this group….listens to this group……NEEDS TO BE VOTED OUT OF OFFICE!
