Vicki, I don’t know if it’s human nature or learned behavior, but I confess to being one of those people who are so good at procrastinating. For example, I can’t remember when I last filed my income taxes before the deadline. I had planned to start this year because it gets so stressful trying to beat the deadline. But here I am, at the end of March, and I still don’t have all my documents together. Interestungly, I am totally the opposite of my father, a WWI veteran, who passed away 45 years ago. He was always so punctual in everything he did. I suppose he learned punctuality from the military. One of my sisters is exactly like my father. She just can’t stand procrastination.

Any way, I am so thankful that there are so many people lining up, even if it’s the last minute, determined to get covered by OBAMA CARE! These lines clearly show that a great many people are refusing to buy into all the lies peddled by Tea publicans, It also demonstrates that a great many people ignoring the negativism by mainstream media pundits who are so good at spreading GOP propaganda while pretending to be impartial journalists.

        March 28, 2014 at 7:36 pm

        1. People might not have had access to positive ObamaCare news.

        2. People are working two, three, four jobs to feed their families and they don’t get paid time off.

        3. Many states have blocked access to navigators and it might have been hard for some people to find face to face access to help with filling out the forms for ObamaCare.

        Lots of reasons.

QUESTION (To Mac Users and all): This is something weird that I was wondering today. You know how every time you open up a document on Microsoft Word or PowerPoint or download something or whatever, you can view it in your Downloads space (next to the Documents space) and it tells you what day and time you opened the document and the size of the document. If you opened or downloaded it in 2012, it is still saved there in 2014 and tells you everything about the document. If you delete it from your Downloads section and send it to trash, does that mean the MB, KB (example 65KB, 254 MB) size it takes up disappears from your computer?

Chips sent me a wallpaper of Rooney in 2013 and I was scrolling through my downloads section on the laptop today and it’s still there. Does that mean it was taking up that disk space in my computer?

    • March 28, 2014 at 7:58 pm

I can only speak as a Windows user. If you empty a deleted file from the recycle bin, that frees up the space it occupies. If it’s in the recycle bin, it still exists on your computer. I don’t know if Macs have recycle bins.

    • 107 forus50
      March 28, 2014 at 8:00 pm

ok I don’t have a mac and this is a question not an answer so I’m 0-2. BUT, why was it still in your downloads and not deleted!?!?!?!?

    • 109 hopefruit2
      March 28, 2014 at 8:00 pm

I think the files take up space until you delete them from your trash. I’m a Windows user but you would have to delete files from my trash to clear up space. For example, if you empty your “trash” from your email, the amount of available space you have also increases.

    • 111 vcprezofan2
      March 28, 2014 at 8:01 pm

I don’t have an answer; only to say that I wouldn’t want to be the one to say ‘yes’, and see you go after Chips with a blunt object. 😉

    • March 28, 2014 at 8:02 pm

Yes, but only when you empty your trash to free up space.

      • 113 Nerdy Wonka
        March 28, 2014 at 8:08 pm

Thanks, Meta. My Mac rescuer in chief.

One more question. Let’s say I’ve worked on a paper in Microsoft Word and saved it in a folder called Class Papers in my Documents section and I open it up later to review or whatever, it will show up in my downloads. Now, if I send it to trash directly from downloads and empty my trash, is the paper gone forever or will it still exist in the folder called Class Papers. Thanks.

        • March 28, 2014 at 8:11 pm

I’m puzzled about why such a document would show up in Downloads when you created it yourself – Meta, help!

        • March 28, 2014 at 8:13 pm

You know, I don’t know what you by downloads because the only thing that shows up in my downloads is stuff I’ve actually downloaded from the web.

But to get to your question if I understand it correctly, even though your paper shows up in different places, your doc exists in only one iteration unless you’ve made a copy and renamed it using the “Save As” function. So if you delete it from one place, it’s gone.

          • March 28, 2014 at 8:13 pm

EXCEPT, of course, in your back-up.

          • 120 Nerdy Wonka
            March 28, 2014 at 8:22 pm

I totally phrased the question wrong. My fault, Meta.

The documents and PowerPoints that show up in my downloads are from the web. The PowerPoints are created by the professors and students retrieve them from a website so of course when you originally retrieve them, they show up in your Downloads section. So I guess what I wanted to know is that if you’ve saved them under another name using the “Save As” function and put them in a folder, then whenever you empty your Downloads, it doesn’t affect what you’ve saved. It just affects the original version that was downloaded initially, right? Thanks.

            • March 28, 2014 at 8:24 pm

    • 127 MightyPamela
      March 28, 2014 at 8:04 pm

NW, I would agree that it frees up space, but perhaps only after you finally empty the trash, right?

    • March 28, 2014 at 8:07 pm

Excuse me? Are you trying to send Rooney to trash?????

    • March 28, 2014 at 8:09 pm

Nerdy, as far as I know once you send anything to trash and then empty trash it’s gone and frees up space on your drive. I go through that Downloads folder every so often and empty it, a whole bunch of stuff I don’t want – apart from Wayne – so it’s safe to say goodbye.

      • March 28, 2014 at 8:11 pm

Speaking of Wayne, my MUFC loving colleague told me that some of his friends in Manchester are threatening to cancel their subscriptions to Old Trafford. He’s telling them to hold on to them, go the games, and give Moyes all the shit he deserves.

        • March 28, 2014 at 8:13 pm

And there’s talk of a plane hired by a supporters’ group flying over Old Trafford tomorrow demanding Moyes’ sacking.

          • March 28, 2014 at 8:14 pm

Not talk. It was confirmed on BT Sports.

            • March 28, 2014 at 8:16 pm

Sorry, BT Sport, sans the final “s”.

            • March 28, 2014 at 8:16 pm

Oh, I know it’s planned, it’s whether it not it will be stopped. I hate this kind of crap, I think he’ll be sacked any way at the end of the season, maybe sooner, I wish these groups would lay off.

              • March 28, 2014 at 8:19 pm

What’s amazing is that the Glazers, as Americans, haven’t given him the boot already. But, US sports owners tend to give managers more time, for the most part.

                • March 28, 2014 at 8:24 pm

I’m stunned too, and I read somewhere about the Glazers being trigger happy when it comes to firing coaches, so it’s pretty astounding that Moyes has lasted this long. I’d guess Ferguson and Bobby Charlton have lobbied for him, and the fact that he was Ferguson’s choice complicates things a little more. It would be a huge embarrassment for him if Moyes was sacked so quickly, and as a loyal devotee of the Glazers, much to the hardcore support’s annoyance, I’d guess they’re giving Moyes more time as much for Ferguson’s sake as his. Still expect him to go in the summer, though.

Surprise, even if you delete a file and even after emptying your recycle bin, the file STILL exists on your disk. It just isn’t allocated and space is recovered. However, the way that is done is by Windows putting an x’e5′ as the first character of the file in the directory. As Windows creates new file or even expands them, it will re-use the space (if it needs it, that is no other free space on the disk) as needed. This is why programs like Recuva can sometimes recover files you delete, generally as long as you had not written into that sector of disk after deletion.

This is for windows. I am sure Mac os does the same thing.

Lesson: Files never get 100% deleted from ‘puter. That’s why you should multiple format your HD when you throwaway/sell your puter.

      • 142 Nerdy Wonka
        March 28, 2014 at 8:45 pm

Oh, I know that files are never 100% deleted from your hard drive/disk/etc. and before you sell or throw away your computer you should perform or take it to a place where your hard drive is wiped clean or where any sensitive data is removed so the next person is receiving a clean computer with no history.

What I was wondering was if something was deleted from my downloads and emptied from my trash, does that mean it’s no longer taking any disk space and that space is freed up? And from the answers, that seems to be the case. But thanks Amk for the information.

What does x`e5′ mean? Is that a way to clean your hard drive or is it just a way to delete files and then empty your trash so that you have more space on your computer?

        • 143 amk for obama
          March 28, 2014 at 8:51 pm

That is M$’s way of removing the pointers to the deleted files. The deleted files still stay at that disk sector under that name. That’s how disk recovery programs get back those deleted files.

EXCLUSIVE-Russia threatened countries ahead of UN vote on Ukraine-envoys

Russia threatened several Eastern European and Central Asian states with retaliation if they voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution this week declaring invalid Crimea’s referendum on seceding from Ukraine, U.N. diplomats said.

The disclosures about Russian threats came after Moscow accused Western countries of using “shameless pressure, up to the point of political blackmail and economic threats,” in an attempt to coerce the United Nations’ 193 member states to join it in supporting the non-binding resolution on the Ukraine crisis.

According to interviews with U.N. diplomats, most of whom preferred to speak on condition of anonymity for fear of angering Moscow, the targets of Russian threats included Moldova, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan as well as a number of African countries.

A spokesman for Russia’s Mission to the U.N. denied that Moscow threatened any country with retaliation if it supported the resolution, saying: “We never threaten anyone. We just explain the situation.”

    Read that last paragraph again…

Did anyone else catch this very interesting portion of the Readout of President Obama’s call with Putin above:

“President Obama suggested that Russia put a concrete response in writing …”

this phrasing caught my eye because it highlights 2 possible things to me :

    (a) PBO and his team and EU partners are announcing (in the most diplomatic way possible) that they do not trust putin’s word;

    (b) tired of putin’s double-crossing and instability of intent, there is now demand/insistence that team Russia clearly spell out its course of action into a binding agreement

in street language, this could be the equivalent of => put up or shut up because I am done playing games with you

The language of diplomacy, at heart, is all about “put up or shut up.” PBO also made it clear that Russia must remove its troops before there are any other steps.

I had the same interpretation. President Obama and his team won’t be played.

‘ For the first time same-sex couples are now legally allowed to get married in England and Wales.

Politicians from the main parties have hailed the change in the law. ‘

I’m guessing PBO isn’t playing. He lined up resources for the EU while in SA and Putin is finally catching the drift. MSM too dense to understand and too stuck on their Koch treadmills to feign curiosity.

Hey Meta and TOD. Also world leaders can see the honesty and reliability in PBO. They see him as a strong leader and probably applaud him as a super strong leader for what he has to put up with here in the US. Vlad made the mistake of listening to these RWNJs portraying PBO as weak. On another note, I just heard on my local news that Christie’ s approval rate is 17% nationally. That made my day.

Good evening, COS. Yes, Putin miscalculated as did the MSM.

Love the news about Christie. He’s scum and he WILL face the consequences.

Yes, but Christie’s convinced himself that the people in Iowa “love him.”

He’ll be like Mitt – years later, he’ll still be measuring for new drapes in the White House. Only, in Christie’s case, he’ll also have ice cream droplets on the measuring tape, because he’s gonna need a lot of sugar to get over his crash.
