Welp, guess I’m staying off the intertubes today as well. Woke up with an awful lower back ache, and it’s just getting worse. About to have lunch and pop one of the missus’ Norcos. And I have an awesome concert to go to tonight, so hopefully this will do the trick.

Also had the saddest dream. I was back with one of my exes from my 20s. Throughout the dream I kept thinking about the missus.

LL, Your guilty conscience bothers you even in your dream. Enjoy your concert tonight.

    • March 28, 2014 at 5:00 pm

Crikey LL, that’s a wacky dream! Have a fab time at the concert – it’s not Billy Joel, is it? 😕

      • March 28, 2014 at 5:03 pm

No, it’s Pavement, uber hip 90s band. And my buddy used to supervise the guitarist up in the Portland Library. Thus we get to go backstage. But Jesus, my back is all sorts of a mess right now. Just popped a Norco so hope that does the trick.

I will hopefully get my piece on PBO’s FP speech done this weekend. Right now it’s back to a very good Chilean sauvignon blanc and rugby.

        • March 28, 2014 at 5:05 pm

Pavement! Oh flip, I adored one of their songs, and I can’t remember which one. Damn you LL, I’m going to spend the next five hours on YouTube 😦

I was kind of wondering why the extensions were given for the 3/31 deadline when a) the Admin hit the revised goal and b) the deadline had been known for some time so it wouldn’t be a surprise. I read that while it is true that they wanted to enroll all those “in line” the bigger reason was a concern about an unprecedented rush on the last day that would create a catastrophic crash. That seems to make sense given the success of “”Between Two Ferns” and all the other messaging they’ve been doing. I hope it doesn’t crash on Monday the 31st but now at least it won’t be catastrophic.

I agree with your idea that the Administration is concerned that the website might crash in the last days crush.
Very wise to have a back-up so folks won’t get shut out.

And BP now admitting that their leak into Lake Michigan this week is double the amount they initially stated. Lake Michigan—–water source of 7 million Chicagoans——-likely killing fish there too. Familiar looking attempt at cleanup going on now, which always leaves toxic remnants. BP——-not a corporate friend—–poisoning U.S. water sources wherever they are.

Wonder if it’s at the stage yet where PBO has to show Putin how he can step back without falling flat on his face? I’d be surprised if PBO wasn’t willing to offer Putin a hand ‘to hold’ so he can carefully walk back from the precipice,

      • March 28, 2014 at 5:43 pm

Based on the comments in the above referenced NYT piece, I think that is what the President, via SOS Kerry did earlier this week:

“The statement said that Mr. Obama, who was visiting Saudi Arabia on Friday, “urged Russia to support this process and avoid further provocations, including the buildup of forces on its border with Ukraine.”

White House officials said that Mr. Obama and Mr. Putin agreed during the call that Mr. Kerry and Mr. Lavrov would meet soon “to discuss next steps.”

Officials did not say when that meeting might happen. Mr. Kerry has been in Europe with Mr. Obama during the past week and was in Riyadh Friday with the president for a meeting with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia.”

    The New Billionaire Political Bosses

I disagree with one thing…we DO have an oligarchy, and we have it NOW. The only way to unwind this, is for Americans to get honest and real about what’s really been happening over the last 3 decades…add to the toxic brew, Citizen’s United….and here we are. Our very own oligarchy that we rail against others for. Scary shit. WE NEED TO VOTE AND GET EVERYONE ELSE TO VOTE. EVERY ELECTION. EVERY TIME.

Anyone else here smirking at this title? 🙂 (Anyway, they have put the trip nuggets together and also included a slide show.)

First Lady Michelle Obama just returned from a week-long visit to China that focused on the power and importance of education. Throughout the visit, the First Lady posed a daily travel blog, complete with video and photos, and along the way answered questions from kids across America.

“It has been a tremendous honor for me, my daughters and my mother to experience this fascinating country over this past week. I’ve especially enjoyed speaking with young people in China, learning about their hopes and dreams, and sharing your stories with them and their stories with all of you. ”

In Beijing, Xi’an, and Chengdu, the First Lady met with young people to hear about their challenges, hopes, and dreams……………//

Readout of the President’s Call with President Putin

President Putin called President Obama today to discuss the U.S. proposal for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis in Ukraine, which Secretary Kerry had again presented to Foreign Minister Lavrov at the meeting at the Hague earlier this week, and which we developed following U.S. consultations with our Ukrainian and European partners. President Obama suggested that Russia put a concrete response in writing and the presidents agreed that Kerry and Lavrov would meet to discuss next steps.

President Obama noted that the Ukrainian government continues to take a restrained and de-escalatory approach to the crisis and is moving ahead with constitutional reform and democratic elections, and urged Russia to support this process and avoid further provocations, including the buildup of forces on its border with Ukraine.

President Obama underscored to President Putin that the United States continues to support a diplomatic path in close consultation with the Government of Ukraine and in support of the Ukrainian people with the aim of de-escalation of the crisis. President Obama made clear that this remains possible only if Russia pulls back its troops and does not take any steps to further violate Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. President Obama reiterated that the United States has strongly opposed the actions that Russia has already taken to violate Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2014/03/28/readout-president-s-call-president-putin

Don’t know if it’s been noted here, but I just wanted to mention the ridiculousness of the ‘cancel Colbert’ effort that the rt. wing jumped on——because I am seeing headlines everywhere saying “Colbert accused of racism”——and mad that people will just see the headline and not read the explanation in the text. I saw that segment in question on Colbert——–and of course he was mocking the Redskins owner’s statements about the team name——–using humor as he always does to point out racism and other outlandish behavior. I can’t believe after all these years there are still people who don’t know Colbert’s modus operandi—–that he uses satire and humor to expose all the hate, racism, small-minded conservative thought. He’s a real gem, our Mark Twain, imho. Need to support Colbert against the attack by the dumb nuts.

Fareed Zakaria has one of the most viewed OpEds at WaPo now:

I nearly always find myself shaking my head in agreement when I read or watch Fareed:

“Compare what the Obama administration has managed to organize in the wake of this latest Russian aggression to the Bush administration’s response to Putin’s actions in Georgia in 2008. That was a blatant invasion. Moscow sent in tanks and heavy artillery; hundreds were killed, nearly 200,000 displaced. Yet the response was essentially nothing. This time, it has been much more serious. Some of this difference is in the nature of the stakes, but it might also have to do with the fact that the Obama administration has taken pains to present Russia’s actions in a broader context and get other countries to see them as such.”

We have the G7, EU, UN, OSCE, IMF, NATO, and Ukraine united in condemning Russia’s violation of international law and stressing the need for a diplomatic solution. Finally, it looks like this ‘may’ be the beginning of Putin trying to ease his hand out of the lions mouth. As always, his actions will speak louder than words.

Putin knows he can’t survive if the oligarchs lose much more money. His dreams for a Neo-Russian Empire are in ashes. His only option is to cut his losses and save his own skin.

Here’s my contribution to #Ukraine updates.

Although wouldn’t it be wonderful if Putin truly is turning tail and running away from conflict?

The US media has contributed greatly to the RWNJ neocons by propping up Putin (citing “polls” — which can’t be trusted here, let alone in a dictatorship, being a veritable Putin propaganda machine (oooh, Putin is so much more “manly,” etc.) to the degree that they should rightfully be paid by the Kremlin.

I believe this week of our President in Europe is going to be a huge turning point for him, for the U.S. and for the world. He used those meetings to exemplify exactly what he means by power by partnership. Each leader was listened to, he was listened to by the other leaders, and they worked together to bring a united front about Ukraine. He definitely showed the strength of “soft power.”

He brought the Japanese prime minister and the South Korean president together to discuss their differences. NO ONE else could have done this.

His speech in Belgium was forward looking and masterful. It will be acted upon and looked back to for years. It set a standard for world affairs.

Then, he met with the Pope, which was a mutually enjoyable meeting. The new Prime Minister of Italy got the chance to show he knows what he’s doing, and charting a new path for Italy. And how many times did he say Pres. Obama was his model?

Now, today, Putin calls him begging for the diplomatic talks
    AND……ACA signups topped six million…..!!!

Finally, people are beginning to wake up and see what he has been saying and doing for four and a half years.

This is quite a record for just six days!
