          Thank you so much LP and Chipsticks for this lovely coverage of FLOTUS and her family in China. You guys really put to shame the lazy and unethical mainstream media that are only interested in hype, sensationalism and spreading GOP propaganda. TOD archives will be such a major resource for historians interested in honestly capturing the true essence of the Presidency of Barack Obama.

    senseless acts that makes one really worry about those who don’t stop to think about the consequences of their actions =>

    confession: I do not know WHO the rapper in this story is;

    but: the fact that some imbecile choose to shoot at people in a funeral procession!!!

    and: specifically shoot at this rapper when he was in his mother’s funeral procession) makes really sad and angry at the same time;

    plus : the fact that so many others around could have been hurt by this shooting make one wonder what is wrong with people????

    don’t know how often and how loudly this needs to be repeated => people please, stop the killings – too many lives lost at the point of a gun!!

    Snowdenski’s Russia is quite the place ….

    “In addition to its daunting fertility decline, Russia’s public health losses today are of a scale akin to what might be expected from a devastating war. Since the end of the Communist era, in fact, “excess mortality” has cost Russia hundreds of thousands of lives every year.

    The 1960s and 1970s witnessed an increase in mortality rates for key elements of the Soviet population. But Russia’s health patterns did not correct course with the collapse of the USSR, as many experts assumed they would. In fact, in the first decade and a half of its post-Communist history the country’s health conditions actually became worse. Life expectancy in the Russian Federation is actually lower today than it was a half century ago in the late 1950s. In fact, the country has pioneered a unique new profile of mass debilitation and foreshortened life previously unknown in all of human history.”

    Link to the full article is in the tweet:

      Know your enemy ….

      “Josef Stalin is said to have coldly joked that one death was a tragedy, while one million deaths was just a statistic. This comment seems to apply to post-Communist Russia as well to Stalin’s own deranged regime. For the better part of a generation, Russia has suffered something akin to wartime population losses during year after year of peacetime political order. In the United Nations Development Program’s annually tabulated “Human Development Index,” which uses health as well as economic data to measure a country’s living standards as they affect quality of life, Russia was number 73 out of 179. A country of virtually universal literacy and quite respectable general educational attainment, with a scientific cadre that mastered nuclear fission over half a century ago and launches orbital spacecraft and interplanetary probes today, finds itself ranked on this metric between Mauritius and Ecuador.”

      Amen, here, again. Bobfr, I have long wondered if erectile dysfunction is not an attempt by Mother Nature to curb human population growth. I’m sure many will disagree with me, but it seems infertility could be another aspect of this, and modern science/medicine has found ways to create conception where it would not happen in Nature. I’m always skeptical of things which do not synchronize with natural energy forces. I do not mean to stir up a commotion, just expressing a thought.

    Just reviewed your wonderful collage of photos from FLOTUS, Daughters, and her Mom during their visit to China. She is all the Ambassador we need for Mothers and Daughters around the world. Her consideration and ability to include her own Mom in these ‘never to be forgotten’ trips warms my heart forever. I have experienced foreign visits in my adult life; but my own Mom was already deceased and my Daughters unable to leave their jobs and accompany me; thus the memories could not be shared. I see and understand the glow in the eyes of these Daughters and Ma Robinson as they view the Terracotta warriors and the forbidden city. This is an education that can no t be obtained from a textbook. Thanks again for sharing these inimitable pics, Ms. “B”

    looking at the photos of people in long lines trying to sign up for Obamacare is very heart-warming for those who understand that PBO and some Dems were right in fighting for this law to be enacted;

    but these images also make me wonder =>

    imagine if from the start of passing Obamacare (or at the very least the start of open enrollment) media outlets had been educating people about Obamacare and encouraging sign ups instead of relentless bashing this life and death policy?

      Yep. And, when the numbers are fully accounted, amk, the total of those obtaining #Obamacare BEFORE 31 Mar 2014, is likely to exceed 10 million due to all the people who have purchased insurance directly from providers, i.e., ‘off exchange.’

      • 76 nathkatun7
        March 30, 2014 at 2:48 am

        Exactly, Bobfr. And if you add to the 10million, the 7 million people who qualified for Medicaid, and the 3 million young adults who were able to stay on their parents’ insurance, Obama Care, from 2010 to the present, has made it possible for about 20 million Americans to
        to get health insurance coverage.

                  I guess the profits the Insurance companies are experiencing are from made up of pixie dust and unicorn farts…..not dollars from the increase In premiums from the ACA or Obamacare. The insurance companies give you 30 days to pay so the first payments would have come in either Feb or early March. I had to badger them to get me a statement to pay for my brothers premium and the April statement for March arrived last week. The insurance companies are behind in their billings because they don’t want to hire enough people for the increased business…..greedy sobs.

    The Tea Party crusade against the Affordable Care Act (ACA) hit a huge snag this week. On March 24, 2014, Texas Tea Party Senator, Ted Cruz, decided to put up a ‘quick poll,’ about the ACA on his facebook page. Problem? The Koch brothers don’t control the conversation on social media, the people do.

    Ask a question, get an answer.

    The question Rafael ‘Ted’ Cruz asked on facebook was simple. Are you better off now than you were before the ACA, also called Obamacare, was signed into law, four years ago?

    Nearly 40,000 comments later, the resounding answer from people all across the country was YES.

    People love the ACA.

    People who responded to the question cited different reasons for saying that they’re better off since the ACA went into effect. Some pointed out that the ACA has saved them money, reduced their monthly premiums, and lowered deductibles and co-pays.

      amk, thanks for posting this. It’s been a long 4 years for the health care law primarily because Democrats, with the lone exception of Barack Obama, seem to really know how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I think the tide has turned for Obamacare and the GOP are not only stuck with the health care law but are also stuck with the name.

        As I tweeted before, the 100% credit for #ObamaCare success goes to POTUS & FLOTUS. If only the boneless dem pols had done their part….

        • 101 forus50
          March 30, 2014 at 12:00 am

          yup. I wish I could give Katherine Sebelius kudos on it because behind the scenes I’m sure she has done tons of speeches, long days, events, conference calls, etc. But publicly she seemed to be always defensive about it; not great at displaying confidence about it. And then the defining moment was when POTUS had to jump in and rescue it when the website failed and she took a back seat. Just my perception…

          Other than POTUS and FLOTUS I can think of one other person that didn’t test which way the wind was blowing on ACA; he just forged ahead and did it on his own in a red state. Steve Bashears, governor of Kentucky.

          • 102 jacquelineoboomer
            March 30, 2014 at 12:14 am

            I would add Nancy Smash, who got the ACA through the House in the first place so the President could sign it, and who staunchly supports it. I think Kathleen did well in one or more of the congressional hearings, speaking up, so I’d add credit to her for that. She’s also always been a PBO supporter, so I’m a little biased!

              March 30, 2014 at 12:25 am

              Agree with Nancy Smash – it could not have been done without her that’s for sure. I do agree that Sebelius did well in the hearings; just was hoping for a more vocally strong sales person on it.

      A great ACA ad would be what would happen to people like Justine if the Republicans succeed in repealing ACA Obamacare.

    They’re bringin’ ’em all over – good riddance – not that I’ve watched her in years on CNBC. In fact, for all I know, she’s been on FOX for years, and this is a new format. Since her nickname was “Money Honey,” she’s right for the FOX “News” business plan; that is, if you’re air-headed and a woman, come on down. (Just checked out the comments with this tweet … #stupidparty is all I’ll add.)

    It is well known that success has so many parents but failure is an orphan;

    Obamacare has reached a stage where so many are going to claim it as their “child” and try to marginalize PBO and those many people across the country who have supported it whether its popularity was up or down, when website was working or barely working;

    Yes , as the Obamacare enrollment numbers demonstrate that it is a success, many will try to lay claim to it and marginalize PBO and those who fought to get us here – make no mistake about it, politicians can lie without blinking or skipping a beat;

    I can see that after being :

    (a) quiet for a while (during the period when enrollment numbers were dismal) ;

    or ;

    (b) being publicly critical (in Dec, when media outlets were helping gop label PBO as a “liar”) ;

    Now, WJC is easing back into the parent mode;

    Well, what he is saying is true that Dems should not run away from Obamacare but rather embrace it.

    However, I am one of those who still remember how WJC helped gop out as they defended the junk policies (the “cancelled”) and accused PBO of something which should have been put squarely in the corner of the insurance companies;

    So yes, I am resentful when I see these reports appearing at the time when PBO has pushed through the major obstacles to get Obamacare to the deadline;

    I am aware that we need ALL hands on deck for the upcoming midterm election but please allow me a few minutes to voice my resentment … … then afterwards I can shut up and get with the program

      Oh, please, take those few minutes and more, and I will join you. Old WJC’s getting on the bandwagon a day late and a dollar short, again, hoping to “save the day” like freakin’ mighty mouse. He’s a buzzard.

      Don’t let him steal your joy!

    i love the Tibetan custom of the exchange of silk scarves as a sign of blessing. My sister married into the Tibetan culture, and has a Tibetan daughter who is married to a Tibetan refugee. When we had my mother’s 80th birthday, everyone present came forward and bowed before my mother and she placed a white silk scarf over their neck and shoulders. It was a very sweet ceremony, honoring and empowering her.

    ‘ BEIJING — Japan and North Korea started high-level government talks on Sunday for the first time in more than a year that were expected to focus on abductions of Japanese by North Korea decades ago.

    The fate of at least a dozen people who Japan says were abducted by North Korea in the 1970s and 1980s is likely to top the agenda of the two-day talks in Beijing.
    North Korea admitted in 2002 that its agents kidnapped more than a dozen Japanese in the 1970s and 1980s. It allowed five of them to return to Japan, but said the others were either dead or had not been abducted to begin with. Japan believes there could be other Japanese abductees still alive in the North. ‘
