        Hi, Jackie! I’m coming along; every time I think the pneumonia is gone, it comes sneaking back. Using the oxygen has helped tremendously, especially at night. Taking it easy this week because starting Thursday, I’m in Reading for the Berks Jazz Fest.

          Sorry, it’s taking so long. My sister is prone to pneumonia–had it twice–and the winters are terrible for her since she’s confined indoors a lot. Hope the Spring (if it ever comes) brings some relief. Have a great time in Reading.

      It may be cynicism on my part, but it’s gotten to the point that whenever the GOP express certainty that their candidate will win, I suspect that there is some deceit, underhanded, unethical behaviour in play that the GOP believes will insure that win. [Same reason why Karl Rove almost burst a blood vessel and Mitt Romney was in denial during the 2012 election.]

      • 18 Don
        March 30, 2014 at 8:17 am

        The fact that we have to convince people that they are under attack is a very sobering thought. At what point will people open up their eyes and see that the GOP is trying to strip away our most basic right. There is nothing more basic right than the right to vote.

      • 19 Don
        March 30, 2014 at 8:23 am

        That’s not cynicism swbluega, the GOP has indeed engaged in deceit, and unethical behavior. In other words they have broken the law to stop certain segments of society from voting. If they truly believed in their ideas they would not have to cheat to win an election.

        • March 30, 2014 at 8:47 am

          “If they truly believed in their ideas they would not have to cheat to win an election.”

          That’s just it…some of the things that come out of their mouths are so outrageous and unfeeling that you have to wonder whether they actually believe what they’re saying. I think it’s more that they know that there is a faction that will believe such rubbish — even if it contradicts their best interests — because of who is saying it. We also see that many of those who spout the outrage are not the ones who will suffer, and are probably among the first to take advantage of the benefits from the ideas and policies that they claim to be against.

    Good morning to all on this very windy, very rainy day. People in this area are preparing for flood damage today as the rains keep coming. Since PA’s primary is so late, there’s still a lot of shuffling about who qualifies to be on the ballot, but it looks as if we’ll have four choices for Dem governor candidates. Whoever wins had better come out fighting and clinch the deal in November. Like all states with the misfortune to have Republican governors, we can’t survive another four years of right wing idiocy.

That whole display there—-all the horrific GOP hopefuls having to parade by and grovel at the feet of throw uppy Sheldon Adelson, hoping to be the anointed one, the one he bestows with his $100 million, the one he uses to try to buy the presidential election —again—-who will then gratefully stop all the criminal investigations of all his illegal activities———all utterly revolting.

    Good News: I am part of the last minute #ACAsurge. Finally got signed up last nite.

    Bad News: I am ashamed it took this long. Though not my fault. Kynect held up my application in December before I traveled abroad. I only got it resolved after returning last week.

    Experience: Not very user-friendly. Annoyed I was asked to prove my citizenship. Wonder if they asked everyone in my state to prove citizenship or only those of us with “unAmerican”-sounding names.

    Take-away: Still an Obama-bot. Now smothered in #Obamacare. Healthcare security makes my professional changes less scary. 😆

    Not that anyone would be tuned in anyway, but warning that Smirky GOP Tool, Chuck Toady Todd, is filling in for Low Ratings Gregory on MTP. NBC couldn’t possibly be considering him as a permanent replacement host, could they? (probably) I already got to see him and Today’s Erica Hill snickering about Obamacare, saying that even tho polls show a SLIGHT improvement in approval, and they both emphasized and laughed about “slight”, Todd explained that wasn’t any real approval by the public—-(couldn’t possibly be)——it was because of “debate fatigue”, tired of the whole subject, and so there was sort of a “passive acceptance”. And added that this is the one subject that is really got the Repubs all fired up about voting.

    • March 30, 2014 at 9:11 am

      “debate fatigue”

      It’s getting harder or taking too much effort to continue to fabricate lies about Obamacare.

      “passive acceptance”

      There is a surge in people *actively* embracing Obamacare by signing up, and acknowledging that it is a true benefit to them; especially if they were unable to get insurance in the past.

    • March 30, 2014 at 10:02 am

      Pretty much every speculation UpChuck Todd gives – the OPPOSITE is true. Thanks Chuck, for reassuring us that the GOP really has nothing to be exited to vote for/against this November.

      Thanks, amk. Great read. I think he is in over his head.

      “Putin has really painted himself into a corner by destroying every independent source of power in Russia. He now has only the bureaucracy to rely on, and must keep increasing its funding to keep ensuring its loyalty,” says Ben Judah, the British author of Fragile Empire, a study of Putin’s Russia.

      “Eventually, the money is going to run out, and then he will find himself in the same position Soviet leaders were in by the late 1980s, forced to confront political and economic crises, while trying to hold the country together. He looks strong now, but his Kremlin is built on the one thing in Russia doesn’t control: the price of oil.”

      This was an excellent article, AMK. I like the reference to the fact that Putin was only a mid-level functionary at the time the Soviet Union collapsed and doesn’t have the senior level understanding of why it happened.

    you asked a question about the proof of citizenship and Obamacare enrollment;

    No, you were not singled out because you had a “foreign-sounding” name or accent;

    proving legal residence or citizenship is part of the Obamacare law that was put in there at the insistence of republicans – you know it was one line of attack when they were writing the law ;

    initially, the law was written to include EVERYBODY who was in the US (documented or undocumented) with the justification that diseases don’t ask for papers and everyone must receive care in the ER.

    The only caveat at the time was that anyone who was not documented could not receive government financial help but could use their money to buy a policy on the Obamacare exchange;

    once the hysteria about Obamacare being for “illegal aliens” was pushed by talk radio and gop elected officials, then the option to let everyone buy healthcare was dropped;

    I have helped many in the immigrant community sign for Obamacare;

    so yes I know that once you answer the question that you were not born in the US, you must provide your citizenship number or permanent resident number;

    this information is then verified by a backchannel link to the immigration services – but part of the law is that this information can’t be used to start deportation proceedings for undocumented parents who sign up their children.

    It operates more like IRS – ignores immigration status for tax filing and only eligibility is determined;

    Ps. fears of this deportation partly explains WHY many in the immigrant community (especially Latinos) have been hesitant to sign up their eligible children for Obamacare

      Why would you want to compete for something you thing is not worth anything. We are part of that 47% they can’t stand, the welfare, free loaders, who just want free stuff from the government, who sit at home having babies on welfare and food stamps, and Paul Ryan said our men don’t work. So if they prevent us from voting, no big deal. But it is ashame, because instead of doing all you can to make it harder to vote, they ought to be encouraging people to vote. It just show you what low down dirty bastards these Republicans have become.

      it has NOTHING to do with Democracy..

    The Jim Crow era lasted until the 1960s. It took an historic civil rights movement, landmark Supreme Court rulings and Congressional approval of sweeping civil rights laws – including the Voting Rights Act – to end de jure Jim Crow racism.

    Democratic Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson championed the civil rights bills, which passed thanks to a bipartisan alliance of Northern and Western Republicans and Democrats.

    Those Republicans included Sens. Jacob Javits, Clifford Case, Hugh Scott and Everett Dirksen — and Kentucky’s John Sherman Cooper and Thruston Morton. Kentucky Rep. Tim Lee Carter, a Republican, joined the Bluegrass State’s six Democratic congressmen in voting “aye.”

    The likes of moderate Republicans like Cooper and Morton and liberals like Javits and Case are long gone from the GOP, which has chopped away its deep civil rights roots.

    I am in awe of how much it took to beat back the forces of repression and racism…

    it scares me at times to think how much we could slide back to the era of the Night Rider..(it really was not that long ago @ 50 years) I do not belittle the TERROR that black folks felt when black men were lynched at will….but to some degree… Stand Your Ground and Stop & Frisk laws…are creating their own kind of Fear…

    When one of those racist…. sexist…homophobe GOP candidates knocks off a so-called moderate (by today’s standards) it is another blow against democracy and the civil rights of everyone, esp the civil rights of blk folks…

    #FORWARD…..because we must!
