Oh, I thought it was a variation on CC’s moral wins – you know, opening the door after making sure no one else was around, then stepping in all triumphant. Apologies, sir, if I got it wrong.

It’d be kinda funny if they sent us a ransom note. We could have a fundraiser to raise the loot, but I’m not sure if anyone would contribute.

Shame on you; I take issue with that! You know very well we’d all contribute because we come ‘true’ in a pinch. 🙂 Not to mention, some of us (ahem. not me of course) owe unknown sums for work he has performed and he never once sent the collection agency after us…. them…whatever.

Aaaah! I hear you. I got called 3 times this morning and gave an excuse….oops…a reason each time, then held my breath that a 4th call wouldn’t come in. After that I consoled myself that I *am* going to go do that fasting lab work I messed up a couple of days ago, AND my refusing also left the way clear for the next person on the call list. /insert angelic smilie here please/

If our democracy survives this horrible SC Republican majority, I hope future generations and congresses work to undo this systematic betrayal of everything Americans have fought and died for. Billionaire Tom Perkins’s Voting Rights Act: pay ‘$1 million in taxes’ get ’1 million votes’

This was the suggestion at a forum in San Francisco back in February – wonder if any RW SCOTUS members were there?

    • 37 Don
      April 4, 2014 at 8:11 am

Perkins doesn’t have to pay for votes; the only thing he has to do is convince some working stiff that some poor person is taking away their whatever.

18 Democrats voted with the Republicans yesterday to gut ” full time workers ” requirement that employers offer health insurance to their employees . That want the hours changed to 40 per week.

And here’s another reason why I always caution folks to not freak out if the jobs report for a given month is “so-so”

    • April 4, 2014 at 9:41 am

Can I just say how incredible our President is? In the face of unprecedented obstruction he has single-handedly brought this country back from the abyss. 49 straight months of positive job growth and this year the economy is poised to kick into turbo drive.

Mt Rushmore? The guy needs his own mountain.

    A thousand times THIS.

This country doesn’t give a crap or treat you as a human being with all the burdens that come with it until they identify that you’re white when you shoot someone or commit a bloody massacre. It’s maybe he’s a terrorist because he has a muslim name. Maybe he’s an undocumented immigrant who hates America. Then they find out you’re white and it’s oh, that poor boy. What was his home life like? Did his parents get divorced? Did his parents stop living the millionaire life and he got bumped down to upper middle class? Is he depressed? Is he suffering from anxiety? Oh, his girlfriend dumped him? Oh, so sad. When did he take a wrong turn? Oh, that poor, poor, misunderstood boy.

Nope. You’re not “misunderstood.” You’re the same as everyone else and your psyche doesn’t deserve greater concern than others who commit the same crime.

    • 69 jackiegrumbacher
      April 4, 2014 at 9:22 am

NW, all this knee-jerk labeling comes from a human being’s failure to ever expand his/her mind beyond childish assumptions. Tooth Fairy: Good: monster in the closet:bad, It means someone has chosen never to grow up or mature or even allow themselves to question the false and ugly narratives of people around them. They will go through their entire lives from birth to grave, never knowing what it’s like to think and feel like a full human being. I don’t feel sorry for them, but a complete lack of self-examination and growth is a form of hell on earth. If there was one thing I would wish every school to teach beyond reading, writing and arithmetic, it’s to help young people to think, to question every assumption they ever made and to stretch their minds and hearts to see beyond themselves.

Paul Krugman has written his 4th Obamacare is Succeeding column called Rube Goldberg Survives. Very smart take on how we came to have the ACA as we have it.
Professor K’s bosses cannot be happy with him.

I would not be surprised to read that Paul Krugman is leaving the NY Times for another venue. He respects our President and that puts him at odds with ownership.

What a fantastically ironic coincidence that on the same day the Supreme Court struck down a law limiting campaign contributions because money does not automatically corrupt politicians, we received news of the death of Charles Keating, the very poster boy for the corrupting influence of money on elected officials.

Taking advantage of the deregulation of the savings and loan industry, Keating used Lincoln to engage in a 5-year orgy of speculative investing – real estate, junk bonds and other risky instruments – as he sucked out investors’ cash to finance his high-flying lifestyle.
Tellers and managers at his thrift persuaded thousands of mostly elderly investors to ditch their government-insured certificates of deposit and unwittingly put their life savings into uninsured junk bonds issued by Lincoln’s parent company, American Continental Corp. Lincoln’s salespeople were told to foist the bonds off on customers who were “weak, meek and ignorant.”

when regulators began to turn up the heat on Keating, he did what any crooked businessman who had given $1.3 million to five senators would do: He called them up and demanded they pressure regulators to back off.
To their credit, the senators refused to intervene, telling Keating it would be wrong to insert themselves into government investigation on behalf of a political donor. Ha ha ha! Just kidding!
The four Democratic senators and one Republican senator snapped to attention.
The Democrats were Alan Cranston of California, Dennis DeConcini of Arizona, John Glenn of Ohio, and Don Riegle of Michigan. The only Republican was John McCain of Arizona, later the 2008 Republican presidential nominee.

Charles Keating knew exactly what he was buying with his political contributions.
“One question, among many raised in recent weeks, had to do with whether my financial support in any way influenced several political figures to take up my cause,” Keating said in 1989. “I want to say in the most forceful way I can: I certainly hope so.”

What’s so hard for this SC to understand??????

The basic Republican critique of President Obama is that he’s Europeanizing America. In the last campaign, Mitt Romney claimed Obama “takes his inspiration from the capitals of Europe.” Paul Ryan warned “we will turn out just like Europe if we stick with European policies.” Europe’s continuing economic stagnation—12 percent unemployment, near deflation, tepid growth—is certainly an unattractive model for the United States. You can see why conservative cartoonists like to draw Obama in a beret.

But the policies that created the mess in Europe are not Obama’s policies. They are the policies—especially tight money and fiscal austerity—that Republicans have pushed for America. And where economics is concerned, the GOP is still the party of croissants and lederhosen.
