Steve Benen: Jobless claims drop to nearly seven-year low

Going into this morning, economists projected a slight improvement in initial unemployment claims, but the new figures from the Labor Department were far better than expected.

The number of people who applied for U.S. unemployment benefits last week fell to a nearly seven-year low of 300,000, a sign the labor market might be experiencing a spring revival. Initial claims in the seven days ended April 5 sank by 32,000 from a revised 332,000 in the prior week, the Labor Department said Thursday…. Economists polled by MarketWatch expected claims to total a seasonally adjusted 320,000.

The average of new claims over the past month dropped by 4,750 to 316,250, marking the second lowest read since the end of the recession.

ThinkProgress: This 32-Year-Old Florida Woman Is Dead Because Her State Refused To Expand Medicaid

Charlene Dill, a 32-year-old mother of three, collapsed and died on a stranger’s floor at the end of March. She was at an appointment to try to sell a vacuum cleaner, one of the three part-time jobs that she worked to try to make ends meet for her family. Her death was a result of a documented heart condition — and it could have been prevented.

Dill was uninsured, and she went years without the care she needed to address her chronic conditions because she couldn’t afford it.

Under the health reform law, which seeks to expand coverage to millions of low-income Americans, Dill wasn’t supposed to lack insurance. She was supposed to have access to a public health plan through the law’s expansion of the Medicaid program. But Dill, a Florida resident, is one of the millions of Americans living in a state that has refused to accept Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion after the Supreme Court ruled this provision to be optional.

Jonathan Cohn: House GOP: We’ll Have That Obamacare Alternative Soon! Really!

You know that Obamacare alternative, the one that House Republicans promised to unveil in April? Their leaders announced on Tuesday that it’s not ready just yet.

This should surprise exactly nobody.

Republicans have been promising to get serious about agreeing on an alternative to the Affordable Care Act ever since they took control of the House in 2010. Somehow, it never happens. Conservative intellectuals have crafted some ideas and a few wonkish lawmakers, like Senator Tom Coburn, have actually proposed measures formally. But the conversation in Congress never gets past bland proclamations of principle. It’s the latest proof of what Jonathan Chait has called the “Heritage Uncertainty Principle”—the fact that conservative reform plans never become viable legislation, and exist exclusively for the use as rhetorical props when Republicans want to demonstrate they really care about health care.

Michael Tomasky: What That RNC Aide’s Equal Pay Blunder on MSNBC Says About Her Party

It’s not Kirsten Kukowski’s fault she only had gibberish to spout about workplace gender fairness. It’s the fault of her party and its culture — and the GOP will pay for it with women.

Just a wild guess, but I have a hunch that Kirsten Kukowski is glad Tuesday is over. Kukowski is a press aide at the Republican National Committee. I do believe I’ve spoken with her on an occasion or two, something to do with credentials. She seemed nice enough.

And so I almost felt a little sorry for her Tuesday as I watched her performance on Jansing & Co. on MSNBC, hurtling herself into enemy territory, burdened with the task of defending her party’s record and posture on women. Kirsten, I’ve been there. All of us who’ve done television have—those moments when you know you’ve got nothing, so you keep talking and talking, saying nothing, larding your sentences down with “you know”s and “uh”s, wondering if the viewers can see your face turning red, praying that any second now you’ll hear the host say, “Sorry, we’re out of time.”

OK, I don’t feel sorry for her. She made her bed, as they say….

TPM: Poll: Republican Guvs Trail Dem Challengers In 5 Races

A new set of polls by Public Policy Polling finds Republicans on the defensive in a number of governor’s races.

The polls, conducted by the Democratic-leaning PPP on behalf of MoveOn.org found the Democratic candidates in Maine, Kansas, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Florida leading the Republican candidates.

• In Maine PPP found Republican Gov. Paul LePage (pictured) trailing Rep. Mike Michaud (D) 37 percent to 44 percent.

• In Kansas, Gov. Sam Brownback (R) trails Democratic gubernatorial candidate Paul Davis 41 percent to 45 percent.

Raw Story: Republicans remind Hank Aaron of racists who threatened his life during home run pursuit

… “We can talk about baseball. Talk about politics,” he continued. “Sure, this country has a black president, but when you look at a black president, President Obama is left with his foot stuck in the mud from all of the Republicans with the way he’s treated. We have moved in the right direction, and there have been improvements, but we still have a long ways to go in the country.”

“The bigger difference is that back then they had hoods. Now they have neckties and starched shirts.”

Steve Benen: Don’t know much about history, DeMint Edition

In theory, Jim DeMint’s understanding of slavery and the Civil War is the sort of thing that should bother those who describe themselves as “constitutional conservatives.”

Heritage Foundation head Jim DeMint appeared on Vocal Point with Jerry Newcombe of Truth In Action Ministries last week, where he insisted that “no liberal is going to win a debate that big government freed the slaves.”
DeMint, a former US senator from South Carolina, told Newcombe that “the conscience of the American people” and not the federal government was responsible for the end of slavery.

…. Wait, it gets much worse.

Let’s put some pressure on GOP Leaders to today to bring the Senate bill to the floor for a vote on extending unemployment insurance. They’ve certainly re-branded – to the even more misogynistic, heartless bastard party.

I wish that every right wing Supreme Court Justice were required to read about Charlene Dill’s death and that the hideous Rick Scott be made to eat this piece–literally–bite by bite. Let the bill for her funeral and the continual support of her family be sent to Scott and and every Republican state senator or assembly person who went along with this cruelty. You got a scalp now, Rick–a real human being dying because of you, You didn’t hurt the president, you didn’t bury ObamaCare. You killed someone and you will keep on killing until a decent governor replaces you. Hope there’s a place in the hottest part of hell reserved for the Rick Scotts and Tom Corbetts of the world. I don’t just want these guys defeated in 2014, I want them crushed so they slink away like the defeated rats they are. They run on their pro-life purity and then govern with a cruel and utterly vicious disregard for human life.

    OMG !!!

Sen. Angus King (I-ME) is floating siding with Republicans after the midterm elections.

In an interview with The Hill, King, who currently caucuses with Democrats, said that he would make his decision on which party to caucus with after the the midterm elections. King said he is leaving open the possibility of switching over to caucus with Republicans if they take control of the Senate.

Yesterday he voted NO on the Paycheck Fairness Act with the Republicans.

Narendra Modi, the controversial prime ministerial candidate of India’s main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has for the first time publicly admitted that he is married.

Mr Modi, 63, made the declaration when he filed election nomination papers.

He married Jashodaben when he was 17 but the couple have lived apart.

He has always avoided questions on his personal life amid suggestions he wished to appear celibate for Hindu nationalist reasons.

Jashodaben is a retired school teacher and reports say she lives in a one-room house in a village in Gujarat.

It came as a rude shock to many of his rabid fans fanatics. Questions are now being asked if he can lie about his marriage for decades so successfully , what else is he capable of?

Oh look! Even The View has found a Black Republican, the current most desirous category of guest, to sit at their deep thoughts chat table today—–former NBA player and current CBS sports analyst Greg Anthony. He said he’s always been a Repub, voted for Obama in ’08 because of the historical significance but back to the good guys in ’12, supporting Romney, made an ad for him. Media is working overtime. I know what they’re doing.

    • April 10, 2014 at 11:19 am

    • 77 debz
      April 10, 2014 at 11:55 am

The View has really lost it’s way. How it went from women of different generations discussing their views to becoming a political show is beyond me. I haven’t watched it in years, but it used to be very entertaining with very little political talk. The only political talk I remember was the youngest woman saying that Clinton made college more affordable for her. That’s how long it’s been since I watched the show.

      • 78 Lovepolitics2008
        April 10, 2014 at 12:55 pm

I think what’s happening on The View reflects what’s happening in America right now. What’s happening is that President Obama is the most transformative president in decades. President Clinton did a good job with the economy, but didn’t challenge the status quo so much. Barack Obama IS challenging the status quo. REAL CHANGE is happening. That makes people more emotional, more “engaged”. On both sides.

How soon before we hear the poisoning the well meme from the media? As we approach yet another recess (two week “District Work Period”), I am reminded of another great post from Steve Benen last year on the do nothing congress.

      House Republicans exhausted by failure

    • 82 Lovepolitics2008
      April 10, 2014 at 1:10 pm

He’s had enough. Well, I think he’s had enough for a couple of years, but still hoped that somehow after Nov 2012 the republicans would find a little conscience and stop hurting America in order to hurt him and democrats. I remember Joe Biden saying “the fever will brake after the election”.

But now President Obama has been forced to accept that republicans are so blinded by their quest for power they aren’t rational anymore and are putting America in real danger in the long term; two more years of obstruction and America will lose any chance to lead the new economy of the 21st century.

As long as he things he can mitigate the damage, President Obama keeps pushing for “civility”, cooperation. Because he knows this is the more constructive way to do things.

But when he feels there’s immediate danger for America, all bets are off. He’s not the conciliatory diplomat anymore, he becomes a very fierce fighter. Remember the debt ceiling ? He was inflexible, because he was protecting America in the short and the long run. Same thing is happening here. He’s going to tell it like it is: America can’t afford two more years of republican obstruction.

Watch the media who called him “weak” change their tune . They will find him “too combative”, not “conciliatory enough”. Sigh…

Conservatives made hay over the White House push for gender pay equity after a study highlighted its own wage gap between the sexes, but they were missing part of the picture.

The Washington Examiner explained Thursday that although an American Enterprise Institute study showed that female staffers earned 88 cents for every dollar their male counterparts earned last year, the salary data also showed that women actually out-earned men among the highest-paid White House staffers.

Based on the same 2013 salary data, the Examiner found that 70 of the 150 White House staffers making more than $100,000 were women. Those top female aides earned $128,600 on average compared to $120,600 for top male aides, the publication found.
