Chat Away

First Lady Michelle Obama, Dr Jill Biden and Sgt Aron Wanless acknowledge soldiers during a jobs fair for military members and spouses, April 23, at Fort Campbell, Ky. To help veterans leaving the military as it downsizes, the government on Wednesday started a one-stop job-shopping website for them to create resumes, connect with employers and become part of a database for companies to mine.

The Russian parliament’s lower house has passed a bill that bans swearing from films, music and other works of art, it’s been reported.

The measure would impose fines for swearing in films, plays, concerts and shows, the Itar-Tass news agency reports. In addition, members of the public could face penalties of up to 2,500 roubles (ยฃ42; $70) for swearing in public and officials would have to pay double.

The bill says a panel of experts will decide exactly what counts as a swear word. If the measure is approved by the upper house, it will be signed into law by President Vladimir Putin and take effect on 1 July 2014.

Just when I thought it was impossible to love George Clooney any more, he proved me wrong.

    That man is awesome!

Hotel-casino developer Steve Wynn and actor George Clooney offered vastly different accounts Tuesday of a dinner that ended in verbal fireworks.

Wynn said Clooney โ€œgot drunkโ€ from downing tequila shots and stormed off after delivering an F-bomb.

The two-time Oscar winner issued the following statement in an email sent through his publicist: โ€œThere were nine people at that table … so you can ask them. … Steve likes to go on rants.

โ€œHe called the president an asshole … that is a fact … I said the President was my longtime friend and then he said โ€˜your friend is an asshole.โ€™ … At that point I told Steve that HE was an asshole and I wasnโ€™t going to sit at his table while he was being such a jackass.

โ€œAnd I walked out. There were obviously quite a few more adjectives and adverbs used by both of us. Those are all the facts. It had nothing to do with politics and everything to do with character.โ€

What’s up with these stupid ass Republicans? I’m so glad to hear that Clooney stood up for Obama. If anyone is a asshole it’s people like Wynn and his racists ass party.

There’s been some rumoring that PBO is planning to reject the Keystone – he’s just waiting for an opportune time to make the announcement. Again, this is just a rumor at this point.

Tzar Vlad really has lost it ….

“Jemilev has been banned on TV, but the voice of the people always shouts louder than censorship! Today it became known that the new powers in Crimea are applying sanctions against the legendary leader of the Crimean Tatars, Mustafa Jemilev.

In particular Crimean television announced its latest odious editorial decision today. The heads of GTRK [state television] are censoring Mustafa Jemilev. From now on, GTRK are not allowed to show him, interview him or even show anything he is involved in. GTRK announced this decision to their employees today. This censorship extends to any mention of the legendary leaderโ€™s name.

This news caused a huge internal protest among the television companyโ€™s employees. They are worried that they could be fired, or that there will soon be more changes in staff. Whatever the politics of power may be, Crimean Tatars have their sense of truth, which has been tempered by a 70 year struggle for their rights. No authority, not even the strongest and most authoritarian can prohibit the living symbol of that truth, Mustafa Jemilev. People must now stand up for the truth!

I propose a flash mob: letโ€™s spread this message about GTRK censoring Jemilev and put his portrait on all social networking sites. Soon Crimea will stand up with Jemilev against the terrified attempts to hide any information about Jemilev.”

A lot of discussion about the Keystone Pipeline on this and the previous thread, with Ed Schultz reportedly telling his audience that he’s got it on good authority that the President will veto the Keystone Pipeline.

Let’s ignore the emoprogs on this for now, just as they should have been ignored by reasonable Dems after ACA became law.

I think it was Ladyhawke who posted SmartyPants’ comments to a NYT article here yesterday. Check out this from the NYT article:

“On Friday (Apr 18), in what was widely viewed as an acknowledgment of just how potent the politics of Keystone have become, the State Department announced that it would delay the decision on the pipeline for several months, almost certainly until after the midterm elections.

    / snip

The agency is now drafting a regulation, expected in June, to slash pollution from existing coal-fired power plants. Details arenโ€™t yet available, but experts estimate that it will cut an average of 200 million to 500 million tons of carbon emissions annually within a decade. And the E.P.A. estimated that regulations on building and appliance efficiency have cut or prevented the annual emission of 350 million tons of carbon.

That means the combined impact of the current and forthcoming E.P.A. regulations could lead to cuts of over one billion tons of emissions annually.”

I read SP’s post yesterday, Arapaho, and thought it made a lot of sense to me. Very often, Smartypants synthesizes (Smartypants does it, so I don’t have to) info into just the right sized bites for me – it’s one of the reasons I love dropping in there. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ™‚

This is pretty silly looking, but remember to get this to come out, you have to layer thin strips of vegetables in the brown rice in a particular way to get anything resembling a face.

(I’m not sure which country the reporter was in when he saw this on his television screen.)

The ‘older American’ part was what caught my eye, because we so often jokingly mention age here.
