Hi there TOD DJ, I am up unusually early because I really have work to finish. I thought I would quickly check in at TOD to see who was up. It’s so nice to start the day with Ellington tunes! The Duke is one of my favorite musician of all time! The guy was, in my opinion, a musical genius! And you, dear sister, are the best when it comes to music selections. Have a wonderful day.

Good news is that all the kiddies come home at the end of the week. Son flies in from CA; Daughter, SIL and our precious grandbaby drive up and we are going to PARTY! Chips, the coverage of the president’s trip has been the best in any media–anywhere in the world. What a magnificent place to wake up to each day. Yes, it is, 99. The state government is telling every citizen to solve EVERY damned issue or annoyance they have with a gun. Kill, kill, kill so you don’t have to talk anything out, or see a counselor or find any conceivable non-violent solution. I am worried sick about the world we are leaving our grandchildren.

The town is noted for its unusual gun legislation. In 1982 the city passed an ordinance [Sec 34-21]

      (a) In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore.

Why the world finally noticed Donald Sterling’s appalling history

The Donald Sterling who is dominating headlines and drawing widespread condemnation for allegedly saying a metric ton of racist things is the same Donald Sterling who has a long, long, long history of being accused of saying or doing offensive things. So why is this time — and why are these particular remarks — different? Why has the world suddenly discovered Donald Sterling?
Consider that Bomani Jones wrote a story headlined “Sterling’s racism should be news” in 2006. Again: 2006. Eight years and 351 losses by the Clippers ago. Jones wrote this after Sterling was sued for housing discrimination. In the lawsuit, Sterling was accused of refusing to rent apartments to black people. (This followed a different lawsuit filed in 2003 alleging that Sterling tried to drive out black and Hispanic tenants, a suit that was settled with an undisclosed financial settlement that was believed to be quite sizable.) As Jones pointed out, the story didn’t really draw much attention at the time.

Jimmy Carter wrote a book titled ” Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid ” . The media is selective in their outrage of what SOS Kerry said.

Maybe they need to look up the meaning of the word.

    • 75 99ts
      April 29, 2014 at 8:33 am

It is so very hard not to relate the media outrage to the color of the President’s skin – so I don’t bother trying to see any other reason for why the media will accept from Carter & any other President what they will not accept from President Obama & his team.

      • 76 Nena20409
        April 29, 2014 at 11:17 am

Truth. When that book came out, many were calling Carter names. The media were horrific……GOOGLE CNN and Wolf comments and interview with Carter.

C-SPAN had call-in LIVE show and the callers were awful. Caret had in that book current map then of how much land, how much restrictions and how much selectively walled off areas there were taken from those in occupied areas.

It was after that book that AIPAC and other groups supporting Israel started denouncing Carter loudly as not a friend of Israel. Carter also challenged the media and compared and contrasted how the media in Israel was more open and debate were more truthful than what the US media were selectively broadcasting.

Kerry spoke the truth. Ehud in Israel and another prominent Israeli pol said the same thing. Where I have issue with Kerry is the walking back. That only emboldens those who want status quo. That makes peace harder. And he knows how the media and the GOP are always looking for distractions that truth or solving any problem.

Dr Susan Rice or even HRC would not have used that term. In this environment, Kerry knows better. His lofty verbiages had gotten him in trouble before. Because of Bundy and now Sterling……this is not getting 24/7 media coverage. But for once, can these people Not mess up and give pretenders an opening to distract?

Thanks Nena – I know/knew little about US politics under Carter – I so appreciate the wealth of information TODers are so willing to share.

And I agree with your issue re Kerry “walking back” his statement – although taken in context his statement simply said he wished he had used another word – but the context remained. The GOP & the media, of course, turn it into “walking back”.

Thanks africa. Here’s more from America’s Voice

      America’s Voice | Released on 04/28/2014

According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice:

For the past two years, these promised Republican bills have been perpetually just out of reach and six weeks away from being introduced. Well, time is up. Despite having the power to act, they remain long on rhetoric but pathetically short on action. Until we see something concrete soon, we’ve learned we can’t take Republican immigration talk at face value.

The clock is ticking toward a legislative deadline at the end of June. There’s a simple way House Republicans can prove that they are serious about delivering on immigration in the interim. The first step is to actually introduce the legislation they are touting and to actually hold votes on reform bills. No amount of blame shifting can distract from the simple truth that the House could pass immigration reform if Republicans started turned their rhetoric into actual bill text and actual floor votes.

Poll: Obama Approval Rating Hits New Low, Spelling Trouble For Midterms

    Huh ?

He is not on the ballot…….

    • 85 hopefruit2
      April 29, 2014 at 8:52 am

Whether or not he’s on the ballot doesn’t matter. The poll itself is GARBAGE, and so is the GOP morale-boosting propaganda attached to it. Most polling nowadays DOES NOT accurately measure/convey this President’s job approval rating – I thought this was understood by now..

BOTTOM LINE: The GOP is in trouble for the midterms – not the President, or the DEMS. And they know it. And WE KNOW IT.

I suggest that between now and Nov 2014, any polling on the President’s job approval should be taken with a grain salt. PBO’s TRUE approval likely sits around 51% and RARELY deviates from that level as much as the polls have implied…

    • 86 jackiegrumbacher
      April 29, 2014 at 8:58 am

Linda, unless we know what poll and what and who was asked, it really is meaningless. No poll today tells you how things will stand on the first Tuesday of November and there are zillions of other factors–most of them local–that lead people to vote for one person or another. You are to right to dismiss it all.

This is a BFD for PA! Our state attorney general, Kathleen Kane, is a progressive Dem and she wasn’t going to spend an iota of energy defending an odious state law like this. I feel as if a great burden were lifted off the backs of Pennsylvanians. The next step is to get out the word because many people are still afraid of what’s going to be asked of them when they go to the polls. We can’t let people like Corbett succeed through intimidation and misinformation. Whatever prayers anyone can spare, please offer them to the people of this state so we can replace this repulsive incompetent in November.

I just noticed a news item about a claim that MH370 came down in the Bay of Bengal. One set of scientists say they have information to prove it – another set say it is impossible as that is well outside the area where they have determined the plane went down.

What has this to do with governments and money – millions have been spent on this search – quite an amount by Australia & we have an economy much smaller than many individual states of the US. Our PM has also signed up to support the US arms makers & spend billions on some defense airplanes – while they are saying they will charge all people to visit their GP because people go to the doctor more than they need to & the country can’t afford it!

Idaho hits 76K QHPs, breaks own target by 90%!

Holy Cats. For a solidly Republican state which didn’t expand Medicaid, Idaho has actually kicked some serious ass when it comes to ACA enrollments (then again, they’re also one of only two states–New Mexico is the other one–which are planning on moving from HC.gov to their own state-run exchange next year, so perhaps it’s not as surprising as all that). In any event, bravo to Idaho!

Good morning TOD. Some corrections from errors I posted yesterday:
The nomination of President Obama’s picks for judges has not gone as well as I said: There are still 86 vacant judges seats. The 50 I referenced are those that are well along in the process.

Harry Reid has done what he could but now the Repubs are threatening to shut the entire process down until 2015. In the vain hope I guess, that the Senate will be in GOP hands come january.

I guess not. It’s so sad how our “democracy” is dying unless we get out the vote this November. It’s also sad at how complicit the MSM is with the Republicans to achieve the end to that democracy. As an American History teacher, I find it difficult to teach about our democracy, our constitution when I see examples of how it’s being eroded by these people, including the SCOTUS. I draw attention to it with my students so at least I hope I’m influencing a future generation to embrace our democracy once again.

I don’t approve of her recusing herself often just because she once was solicitor general. You think any of the precedent destroying rw’ers of roberts court will ever recuse?

It’s the right thing to do. It’s more than ‘noble’, it’s lawful when she has literally worked on a case. It was an issue with her nomination, that there would be a good number of cases she could not participate in.

Of course Scalia was fine palling around with Cheney and Thomas’ wife and Scalia’s son were working on the Bush transition team before Bush v. Gore.

The left needs to demand these recusals. We are too damned polite.

Course the media ignored that poll, it doesn’t fit their agenda, which is doom and gloom for Obama and the Dems. And the only one who can save the day is Hillary.

It’s true: one of the Democratic party’s top Senate recruits is actively associating herself with George H. W. Bush and his son on the campaign trail.

Georgia’s Michelle Nunn — the presumptive Democratic nominee hoping to snatch an open seat in the deep-red state — has so far touted her ties to the Bushes in two ads and in her official biography on her campaign website.

In a new ad called “Point Guard” posted online Sunday, Nunn speaks to the camera and proudly declares, “I went on to become CEO of President Bush’s Points of Life Foundation” — referring to the nonprofit volunteer service organization inspired by the elder Bush’s 1989 inaugural address. (Nunn is currently on leave while she runs for Senate.)

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta has signed into law a controversial marriage bill legalising polygamy.

It brings civil law, where a man was only allowed one wife, into line with customary law, where some cultures allow multiple partners.

Controversy surrounded an amendment to the bill, supported by many male MPs, allowing men to take more wives without consulting existing spouses.

Traditionally, first wives are supposed to give prior approval.

Last month, female MPs walked out of parliament in disgust after their male counterparts voted through the amendment.

They argued that a decision to take on another wife would affect the whole family, including the financial position of other spouses.

The bill was also opposed by Christian leaders who urged the president not to sign it into law, saying it undermined Christian principles of marriage and family.

    pathetic backward move by uhuru.
