Night owl chat – Musicals: Stephen Sondheim

Europe invented the Western opera. America took the opera tradition—among others—and turned it into the great American musical. The first in a series on numbers from American musicals. Tonight: the music of the greatest musical composer of the latter 20th century, Stephen Sondheim.

Send in the Clowns is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever. I didn’t understand it when I heard it at 20. It took years for me to ‘ get it’.

Thank you, Mr. Bobfr for posting this.
I would have love for him to have met our President Barack Obama.
Some things you can only imagine.

Thanks Bob for sharing this tweet. What most people don’t know is how young both Malcolm X and Dr. King were when they were assassinated. They were both 39 years-old. Malcolm was only 4 years older than Dr. King. Like King, Malcolm X had a profound impact on young people in the 60s, and especially those in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Weeks before he was assassinated, he announced that he was ready to work with other Civil Rights leaders who were genuinely focused on solving the problems facing African Americans.

    O/T …….but the link wasn’t working when I first saw this….

…..Researchers claus-christian carbon and vera m. hesslinger (experimental psychologists based in germany) have reported that leonardo da vinci may have unknowingly created the very first 3-D image in history with his famed ‘mona lisa’ masterpiece. evidence has been drawn from the in-depth analysis and side-by-side comparison between da vinci’s own ‘mona lisa’ housed in paris’ louvre and an additional version held at the museo del prado in spain — often thought by historians to be made by a copyist…..

A detailed view of the face regions of the prado and the louvre versions and a red–cyan anaglyph combining both depictions

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

….however, based on their documentation, the two researchers have hypothesized that the prado rendition was actually painted by an apprentice in da vinci’s workspace at exactly the same time as the original, from a slightly different positioning in the room. the space between the two perspectives would have created a stereoscopic 3-D effect when overlaid on top of each other. ‘we reconstructed the original studio setting and found evidence that the disparity between both paintings mimics human binocular disparity.’ they describe in their report ‘this points to the possibility that the two giocondas together might represent the first stereoscopic image in world history.’………

    This really matters …..

…. read it, please, and spread the link, widely and aggressively. Lots of peoples’ lives are in the balance.

This is the new GOP savior in the Oregon Senate primary…… “A doctor who hates Obamacare” ….to bad they didn’t vet her earlier

…….The police report outlined a specific incident after a 2007 Christmas party when James Grant called 911 and told responding officers that his then estranged wife had hit him in the face with a notepad. The two were just two weeks from getting their divorce finalized at the time, and were still living in the same home, but on separate floors, according to the investigating officer.

Grant also told the officer he was “tired of the ongoing harassment” from Wehby and claimed that she had pulled his hair, slapped him and thrown items at him over the past year. Wehby, a pediatric surgeon, has been leading the race against Jason Conger in the Senate GOP primaries. But just last week, allegations surfaced which tarnished her campaign. It was revealed that Wehby was accused of stalking her ex-boyfriend, Andrew Miller in 2013……….

http://www.wealthreporter.com/sa/fed-employees-trap-c.html?mvcode=/212521/ This is the second time in three days I’ve seen articles relating to this topic. I’ve read them both, but don’t really get it. Is anyone able to synthesize or condense for me, please? And, is it a big problem for all of us, or only the 1%?

    • May 19, 2014 at 11:02 pm

MP, the US is not in any current danger of a ‘currency collapse’ – which is the fear-mongering, underlying premise of this screed. What matters is that we give President Obama and the next truly Progressive Democratic President a Democratic House and Senate, and any ability of China or weakling Russia to undermine the central role of the US Dollar in the global financial system will be ZERO.

Thank you, bobfr. This is the intuitive feeling I was getting, as in, when reading and re-reading an article still creates a sense of confusion, I begin to suspect the underlying motive is just that, to create confusion, and to give people (like me) the impression that we/they are stupid and are being played. Especially the mention of Russia, seemed too far off base, given the situation there, to be credible. Sometimes following links just makes me clear my history, cache and cookies, in that order! Eff’ing waste of time.

“…. I begin to suspect the underlying motive is just that, to create confusion, and to give people (like me) the impression that we/they are stupid and are being played.”

Yes, that is the intent. Fortunately, MP, people like YOU are not stupid and won’t be ‘played’!

125MP I saw a country do something like this in the 60’s are it was not nice. It had a terrible effect on everyone. The 1%er’s left the country while the rest had to suck it up…….Cuba is still in trouble.

A little of both. Getting used to the pace at work, but giving up on trying to catch up on any given evening. I go to the last post, and see how far back I can go in the posts… 🙂

I meant ‘caught up’ at work, but your answer covers that too. Happy to see you here and to know the heat/drought hasn’t overpowered you. Out of the blue this week offspring asked if all was well with you so I mentioned the moving and resettling busy-ness answer.

/whisper – first mention here/ Someone you know got official notification they’ll be receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts – Honours Music in a couple of weeks. Seems they have also had an offer of acceptance (or whatever it’s called) to Laval U to pursue a Masters in music composition, but haven’t decided yet whether they will accept. 🙄

“I can only say the following: the scale of the process is impressive. The country is able to defend itself–both from Putin, and from pro-Russian terrorists.”

In the next several hours, pay close attention to any indication from the US or/and NATO that Russian troops are transitioning to their bases. That’s an essential element that must be verified.

Good News — some of the races, other than U.S. Senate, have multiple Dems running (of course, people need to find out about the candidates and choose wisely)
Bad News (part 1) – ridiculously low voter turnout and low information voters will decide the primaries
Bad News (part 2) – almost all of the judicial slots (State Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, etc.) are unopposed and supposedly non-partisan, (but really not)
