Thanks JER! As was said, this will be a lifetime memory for these students, not just shaking hands with the President, but knowing he chose to be a part of *your* high school graduation.

(I wouldn’t want him to; don’t know if he legally could), however I like to think that if this president were to run again in say 10 years or so, he’d have a landslide victory. All these young people whose lives he has positively impacted would want to vote for him. I can see no reason why they wouldn’t clamour to support him.

You got any *good* sleep yet since the weekend? I noticed somewhere that you got 30 minutes of real work done, so assume this means you were very productive Sunday-Monday and I don’t have to worry for now about feeding you and Danny. 😀

        • June 11, 2014 at 7:58 am

Well, Danny was VERY well fed yesterday: he stole a steak from the kitchen. I turned my back for one second and there he was, running out the door with it dangling from his mouth. So, I had to cut the surviving steak in half for our dinner. Still hungry.

Now CC, you of all people know that words matter. /frowning/ ‘Stole’ is so strong. DannyO was simply trying to train you not to leave stuff so close to the edge of the counter/table/whatever. Plus, I’m betting you slept better for not having all that red meat weighing down your stomach. 😉 😉

BTW, a little hunger is probably a good sign….in some scenario …somewhere.

/stern whisper/ DannyO, even though I took your side with Chips (that’s the deal), I really do not approve of such behaviour on your part! You have to prove yourself trustworthy. Next time she slips up like this, just bark a couple of times in reminder, okay? If she still doesn’t smarten up, then okay, but no stealth moves. Get it?
Also, too, you probably shouldn’t eat anything today – penance and all that.

Ah, fond memories of my first dog, Rufus, and my candlelit dinner with my gourmet duck that I had lovingly prepared for a special date. And there Rufus was — under the table with the duck in his mouth, daring anyone to take it from him.

He was FAMOUS for making it very difficult for me to date in my 20-something years.

When I was 30, I met Mr. 57 and he drove me home from a party. Rufus met him, crawled onto his lap, and put his head in the crook of his neck.

As we say, the rest is history……

            • June 11, 2014 at 9:57 am

Aaaaaaaaw 57, that is the cutest story ever! Mr 57’s lap, that is, not the duck – which has me in tears! 🙂

10 days later a group of us went to Ravinia (a wonderful outdoor/pavilion music park North of Chicago). Mr. 57 won over my goddaughter by walking with her all over the park. And the next morning my brother called me at 7:00 a.m. (my brother was NEVER up at 7:00 a.m.) and said to me, “Please don’t eff this one up.

So – Rufus, my goddaughter and my brother. hmmmm….

We were married 6 weeks to the day that we met. 34 years ago, as of August 15.

57F, I do like your funny stories. One ‘worry’ I have about Rufus choosing your future life partner – do you really think Chips need THAT particular encouragement? Given her success rate in the village to date, might she not be inspired to call on DannyO in this area? Is this fair of you? I don’t know…….

I am unabashedly gleeful at Cantor’s fate tonight. It is what he deserves. It is what his party deserves. Eric Cantor is a political arsonist – as is the entire Republican leadership – and no one should be sorry that they are being consumed by the fire of hatred they set.

Apart from Cantor’s humiliating defeat I was even more gratified to see the media so horribly blindsided by yesterday’s developments. They simply couldn’t spin this as “bad news for Obama” and you could see the loss for words and straining to make a cohesive argument. Then you had Chuckie Toad lying through his teeth claiming that he was not surprised by this outcome – YEAH RIGHT Mr. Toad! Where were all your polls?

Ace reporter Chuck Todd was desperately trying to set the meme that it was immigration that took down Eric Cantor. He kept saying that the recent increase of children crossing the border with an adult or guardian made the immigration issue a perfect storm. Meanwhile there is this from the article posted by pinkbunny70:

Poll: Immigration didn’t doom Eric Cantor

Meanwhile, Cantor was deeply unpopular in his district, the PPP poll found. About 63 percent of those surveyed in his district said they did not approve of the job Cantor has been doing, with 30 percent of registered voters approving. Among Republicans, 43 percent approved of Cantor’s job performance, while 49 percent disapproved, the survey found.

“Cantor didn’t lose because of immigration,” pollster Tom Jensen wrote in the memo obtained in advance by POLITICO. “He lost because of the deep unpopularity of both himself personally and of the Republican House leadership. Even in his conservative district voters still want immigration reform passed, and they want it this year.”

    • 61 hopefruit2
      June 11, 2014 at 8:34 am

I don’t know the exact breakdowns, but there is reason to believe that some Dems and Independents voted against Cantor since it was an open primary. Here’s an article from the HuffnPuff that was posted a few days ago about the intention to vote out Cantor:

      • June 11, 2014 at 8:46 am

“…reason to believe that some Dems and Independents voted against Cantor …”

To the degree that this was the case, I guess the end justified the means.

    • 63 57andfemale
      June 11, 2014 at 8:49 am

I think it was a vote for the tea party, although the open primary system may have had something to do with it.

The district went 57-42 for Romney. Is there room for the Dem’s? Probably if they are at all prepared to try to fight for the seat. I am forever perplexed by the seats the party chooses to fight for.

Cantor cannot run as an independent, but he could mount a write-in campaign. That would be shave votes from GOP and give the Dem a chance.

I see the GOP throwing Cantor under the bus and embracing this immigration-hating ‘nut’ because he has ‘professor’ credentials. However, his Dem opponent is a professor at the same university.

My Thoughts on Cantor’s Upset Loss
    by BooMan
Wed Jun 11th, 2014 at 12:19:13 AM EST

In the aftermath of Eric Cantor’s epic, shocking 11-point primary loss to an underfunded xenophobic college professor, Hillary Clinton bestrides the globe like a colossus. There is literally no hope now that the Republican Party can do one thing to improve their performance with the Asian or Latino communities. In fact, since it is now evident that it is not sufficient to do nothing about immigration reform, but one must spend all day bellowing about the brown hordes crossing our border, Republican politicians are powerfully incentivized to loudly advertise their disgust with the changing demographics of the country. And they will. The GOP is guaranteed to do much worse with Asians and Latinos in 2016 than they did in 2008 or 2012.

Think about this. Wall Street and the Chamber of Commerce and Agribusiness and the evangelical community all lobbied the House Republicans to pass immigration reform and they got nowhere. That is how incredibly racist the people are in these gerrymandered districts. When has the Republican Party ever before told those powerful conservative interests to go fuck themselves? Normally, when those groups speak, the GOP jumps to do their bidding.

I generally like Booman’s take on things, but why is he so hung up on Hillary Clinton? I mean don’t we have a midterm to focus on – a midterm that is far more important and consequential that what HRC does in 2016 if she’s the Dem nominee (which is still far from determined)?

      • 81 Vicki
        June 11, 2014 at 9:06 am

        I agree, hf.

Plus, is Booman willfully denying that Jeb Bush’s compassionate immigration remark was carefully calibrated?
That it was NOT a gaffe?
Thant Jeb talking about immigration as a matter of love was intentional?
That the “base will never accept it” was the fog of war propaganda the RW specializes in?
And did I mention that Jeb’s wife is latina?

I seem to be standing out here alone thinking Jeb is what is comin next.

The media and corporate establishment is pining is for Bush-Clinton election. It’s like they want to go back to the good ol’ days of the 1990’s and 2000’s when corporations were left to do as they pleased while wealth inequality skyrocketed.

And some bloggers seem clueless about this.

My strong belief is that if we run a credible progressive candidate against Jeb we will win big.
Hillary is not the only dem.
Say “hi” to Martin O’Malley, Elizabeth Warren, Bill de Blasio, Deval Patrick, Julian Castro, Wendy davis, Sherrod Brown,
For gods sake, Michael Dukakis and Bob Dole were presidential candidates.
            Open our minds, please.

        • 85 jackiegrumbacher
          June 11, 2014 at 9:37 am

Vicki, I understand your concerns, but it’s really light years in political time before 2016 and both Clinton and Bush have to get through grueling primaries before we know what we’re dealing with. The more that either Clinton or Bush believe they have this wrapped up, the less likely they will. We have a turbulent summer and fall ahead of us when we have to focus on winning our state houses, keeping the Senate and, at the very least, making significant gains in the House. Let’s hope this election is a wake-up call for Dems and for the few remaining R moderates and for Independents. Every last mother one of them has got to vote this fall–no excuses.

  30. June 11, 2014 at 9:02 am

So Immigration Reform is being given as an underlying reason for Cantor’s defeat. I guess this mean that the GOP (and yes, some Democrats) will see this as more justification to dig in their heels on other issues e.g., Gun Control, Healthcare (i.e., repeal Obamacare), etc.

You’re right Chips, maybe we should give him a chance and see how things shape up.

Sad that there are 2 competing candidates against the RWNJ – Trammell is the dem nominee and really has a chance if the party and the dems in his district get behind him – I think the other guy is giving the seat to the GOP.

TOD, I think it is helpful to keep in mind how repellent a personality Eric Cantor is. That is one reason he lost.
Folks very often vote for whom they like. Especially when they are politically clueless folks.

The USA Loves POTUS. Maybe not quite as much as we do but remember PBO is the only President to win by more than 50% Twice in recent history. The lovers outnumbered the haters.

We need progressive candiates at every level that will continue PBO’s great works and be charismatic, open, friendly and inspiring. Now in 2014 and certainly for 2016. No slick pre-packaged contestants are likely to win in the current era.

Laughing at C. Todd saying Cantor lost because of immigration, that the news that children from S. Amer. were crossing the border pushed them over the edge. I bet about 1 person in that district, if that, was aware of that news item.

http://www.esquire.com/blogs/politics/ – Charles Pierce this morning:

A Stunning Victory for the Tea Party, and What It Means

… “It wasn’t just the fact that Cantor flirted with immigration reform. Brat also hit him for voting to raise the debt ceiling — Brat has promised to vote against raising the debt ceiling for the first five years he’s in Congress — and for voting for the Ryan-Murray budget plan, and for voting to end the government shutdown. In other words, Dave Brat was elected because he ran against the very few things that Eric Cantor did that remotely helped the government simply to function. Apparently, Brat would have the country default on its debts, go without a budget, and have the government still shut down until the president is willing to torpedo his signature policy success, If you lived in the Seventh Congressional District of the Commonwealth of Virginia, those are the policy choices your fellow citizens would have endorsed last night. Any pundits who ever again criticize the president for not “compromising” with a party that thinks this way — and is proud that it does — deserve to have their keys to the Green Room icebox confiscated.”

Emphasis on the last sentence ^

Right wing hacks talking – but entertaining – especially when Norah O’Donnell asked as to how this affects Obama – they said little and went back to how sad that Cantor is gone & continued to blame the GOP pollsters

My favorite b.s. from Luntz (who is on the Cantor payroll)

“I think this is such a great loss not just for Virginia, but for the country. Eric Cantor had the ability to negotiate. Eric Cantor had the ability to sit toe to toe and make concessions and make agreements.” – hahahahahaha. Cantor might have negotiated with Boehner – didn’t notice those great skills used elsewhere.

Bill Kristol, Todd and Luntz are all GOPers and of the same Faith. Luntz, the guy who plotted a political Coup d’tat with Cantor and Co on Jan 20th 2009? And Norah O’Donnell didn’t even bring that part up on the lies Frank spouted on Live TV? DC/NY Journos are Cancer to our system of Gov’t. They are always making excuses for the TBGOPers’ Failures, Obstructionism and Backward Disgusted Political Schemes.

I was listening to C-SPAN Callers this AM and their 1st caller was from VA and in dist 7 and he voted for Brat. He said that Cantor lost for he had not paid attention to the needs in that district. He was disliked. He didn’t respect them and he was Not around. He had stayed in DC too long and he was not candid with the policies those living in the district cared about. He said that Immigration had NOTHING to do with it.

Cantor had just 28K votes. Brat had 35K. Cantor won in 2012 with over 220K votes. The issue is that Cantor didn’t bother to make sure that his voters came out. He was in DC and not only that, he had spent over $150K buying food for friends than Bart who spent $122K to defeat Cantor. Todd is Lying. I agree with Pink up thread.

Greetings, TS! Dickinson and I had an ongoing convo for a bit, and he did seem to admit he’d step aside IF the acknowledged guy verbally does the right thing. Maybe you could read the full convo in my TL and add your gentle persuasion or POV. [Or start your own conversation with him.] He seemed quite willing to dialogue, and he hasn’t said anything that we all don’t believe. I’m thinking if enough others engage him positively maybe the guy who currently has legitimacy to run might cast a keener ear to what he’s saying? Also, many others engaging him in a reasonable fashion may also make him rethink his possible ‘spoiler’ position. Who knows?

Pierce did some research last night

This is interesting – “Brat also hit him for voting to raise the debt ceiling — Brat has promised to vote against raising the debt ceiling for the first five years he’s in Congress ”

So would Brat vote against his own party on this – How many times did GWB raise the debt limit?

I doubt he has a clue as to what the debt limit is, nor the impact of the US not paying its debts. This is the scarey part of these people getting into congress. He supposedly has a degree in Economics!! I fear also what he must be teaching his students.
