So sorry to hear of Ruby Dee’s passing. I believe she’ll be greeted by Maya, and the two will keep each other company among all the loved ones. I was introduced to Ossie Davis one evening back in the early ’90s, and it was a great thrill since I’m an admirer of both he and Ruby Dee.

Ruby Dee RIP. A talented, elegant actor. Made everything she appeared in better.

From The Guardian: Three planes already in air evacuating Americans from airport near Baghdad. More waiting to go. More Saigon, 1975 than whatever McWarmonger is saying, maybe.

It’s another day and another new low for Republican politicians. Jeff Sessions opens his mouth and shows the stupid, one disgusting comment after another. To think that anyone listened to this man and thought he belonged in the US Senate is just depressing.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) claimed on Thursday that Republicans in the House are unlikely to vote on immigration reform because President Obama released five Taliban-linked prisoners being held in Guantanamo Bay to secure the freedom of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. The explanation is part of a long list of revolving excuses Republicans have used to justify their inaction on the issue.

As usual, a day late and $50 short. Anyway, bringing this over from bottom of last post. Curious what others think.

The attack on the Haqqani Taliban leadership left me thinking. Remember how we were informed that if the details of the Bergdahl swap were leaked prematurely, the deal was off and possibly Bergdahl would be killed?

I have a suspicion, based upon no knowledge, but just putting some pieces together.

Some suggested at the time that the no leaking condition was put in place due to some internal battles within the Haqqani Taliban. Is it possible that more than just Bergdahl was involved in the swap. Like maybe the location of the leaders that were just hit? There have been a lot of rumors about the Taliban negotiating with the Afghan government. Perhaps some of the Haqqani leadership opposed that idea and other members thought they needed to be gotten rid of w/o the blood being on their hands.

So for 4 minor Taliban and one who appears to no longer have full mental faculties, we got Bergdahl and some of the real hard core leaders.

Just a thought, and definitely not something that the government can let be known, not even to Congress. Maybe sometime in the future, the whole machinations behind the swap will come out.

This wasn’t a swap, at lest with a swap you get something in return. The only thing the Haqqani Network got in return was drone, sent by yours truly.

So true. GWB talked a lot of shit, but his actions played directly into the terrorists hands by weakening our military and bankrupting the nation. PBO without the bluster eliminates our nation’s enemies with steely resolve. Guess which one the msm/gop endlessly tries to portray as a weak leader? They cannot even be dumb enough to believe the nonsense they peddle.

Iowa’s Republican Senate nominee Joni Ernst told a local news outlet she’s “appalled” that her husband once called former U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano a “traitorous skank” on Facebook.

As reported by the Des Moines Register, Democrats took a screenshot of Gail Ernst’s written comments, which had been up since April 2013, and seized on them. That prompted him to delete that and other inflammatory posts and apologize for them before Ernst denounced them.

“I’m appalled by my husband’s remarks,” Joni Ernst said, according to the Register. “They are uncalled for and clearly inappropriate. I’ve addressed this issue with my husband and that’s between us.”

Gail Ernst also called Hillary Clinton a “hag” in a May 2013 post on Facebook.

The flap is particularly notable because Ernst’s allies have been sensitive to sexist attacks on the candidate in her race against Democrat Bruce Braley for Iowa’s open Senate seat this November.

    Bye Bye Joni !

Her husband’s name is Gail? All my life, all the Gails I have met were all females. Leslie…..Hillary…..Renee…Dana, etc have all been both sexes.

Just some thoughts on .Warren going to Kentucky. Several here expressed disgust that a white woman is going, and Grimes is distancing herself from PBO. That is hard to take, but, let me explain why she’s going and why she can well make the Turtle rue the day he filibustered her bill.

As someone on Politicususa said, he calls her “the velvet hammer.” She’s nice and calm, but he wouldn’t want to cross her, and Turtle made her very angry.

She is from Oklahoma originally, a state like Kentucky. Let me point out some parallels: Kentucky has coal, we have oil; Kentucky has the famous basketball team, we have the football team. Kentucky is heavily evangelical, we are heavily so, mostly So’n Baptist. Our politicians are still running against PBO…..against Obamacare, against “job breaking” EPA regulations, against healthy eating, for the XL pipeline.

I firmly believe PBO will encourage Elizabeth to go to Kentucky. He is a realist, and if she can help get rid of the Turtle, he will be very grateful in the next session. Warren kept her head down and worked hard, and has learned to choose her battles. She connects well with young people, and can influence them. . She also understands this schizophrenic part of the country…..super religious, but mean. She knows how to deal with that and can talk as “down to earth” as anyone. She still has family here and visits, so is well aware of the currents. If she can help rid the world of the Turtle, EVERYONE should be thankful. I know PBO will be.

I know what this says about racial animus, but pragmatically, this is the best way. Kentucky is fortunate to have a D governor and have a strong D running for Senator. We are not so lucky. Our idiot Coburn is going to be replaced by a far right theocrat…..a choice of two, both equally awful. So I say….Go Elizabeth!

      June 12, 2014 at 4:31 pm

Carolyn, I don’t think people are “disgusted” with Warren or disgusted because she happens to be a white woman. The disgust is not at Grimes’ distancing herself from PBO in a strategic move to gain political support. Whatever they can do to ensure that the Dems retain a Senate Majority by kicking out McTurtle, I’m all for it.

The disgust is with the racism among DEMOCRATS in KY in 2014, which leads to all of these convoluted political antics in the first place. PBO is a good decent person with very reasonable policies, and the fact that Grimes has to an extra mile to “distance” herself, and can only have “white” politicians campaign on her behalf as a Democrat is what is “disgusting.” We cannot pretend that the GOP has a monopoly on racism/bigotry when it’s alive and well among a critical mass of Democrats in the US.

        June 12, 2014 at 4:38 pm

Okay……what came across to me was disgust with Warren for going, and disgust with the Democrats in Kentucky. Anyway, I think Warren can bring Grimes in for the election, and the Turtle will feel her wrath.
Her anger came through so strong on Chris Hayes’ show, he was obviously filled with glee. As the man commenting on Politicus commented, she’s entirely genteel and nice, but she means it. I think Turtle will learn you don’t cross Elizabeth.
Hate to say it, but the racial animus is still going to take time. As the over 65 generation, sad but true, dies off, this will change. Sometimes I get so angry with my generation I just could scream.
Also, living in an evangelical state, one learns how this is all wrapped up in their religion; very perverted, but inculcated at birth. We moved here from California…..talk about culture shock! I lived in San Francisco as a young teenager…..went to school with everyone…..loved it.
Around here the dumbest, redneck, poor white trash feels superior to President Obama because of the color of his skin.

          June 12, 2014 at 4:57 pm

Indeed Carolyn. I have no problems with Warren assisting on the campaign trail. I’m totally with you that McTurtle needs to be gone, and Warren will no doubt do a fine job in KY. And I agree the racial animus diminishing will take time, but I feel that it persists in large part BECAUSE of the so-called main-stream media, and because of politicians on the right AND left who ought to know better.

After doing some serious thinking about it, I’m not really upset if they distance themselves from POTUS, the main goal is for the Democrats to keep the Senate, and win control of the House. If getting the House is not possible then gain seats in the House. We have to give POTUS a Congress to work with, not these crazy ass racists government hating, women hating, black and latino hating, poor hating, Tea republicans.

Industry Group Files Lawsuit Seeking To Kill Seattle’s Minimum Wage, Claiming It Violates Their Free Speech

Last week, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray (D) signed a bill that will eventually raise his city’s minimum wage to $15 an hour. It took eight days for a lobbying group representing major employers like McDonald’s and Taco Bell to file a lawsuit asking the courts to repeal the legislation.

In a sensible world, this lawsuit would have no chance of prevailing. Many of its claims are frivolous — and comically so. The lobbying group argues, for example, that Seattle’s new minimum wage violates the First Amendment because “by increasing the labor costs of franchisees, the Ordinance will reduce the ability of franchisees to dedicate funding to the promotion of their businesses and brands.” In other words, the law requires businesses to spend money paying workers a living wage that they could otherwise spend on advertising, and this somehow violates the Constitution’s guarantee of free speech. If this were actually what the Constitution required, then any law imposing costs on anyone would be unconstitutional, including all taxes. After all, every dollar paid in taxes is a dollar that can’t be spent to buy an ad promoting the deliciousness of the Big Mac.

At the Juncture of Health and Climate: AMA Endorses President Obama’s Climate Action Plan
    Spandan Chakrabarti June 12, 2014

While the media has been too busy on made-up controversies, America’s medical community has begun to quietly line up behind President Obama’s climate action plan announced earlier this month by EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. Yesterday, the American Medical Association’s House of Delegates gave its formal assent to the President’s plan to reduce carbon emissions from one of America’s worst polluters, power plants.

The American Thoratic Society, the country’s leading organization of physicians dealing with pulmonary diseases, welcomed the action by the AMA, saying:

Newswise — June 11, 2014 — The American Thoracic Society welcomes today’s action by the American Medical Association House of Delegates reaffirming their support for efforts by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to limit carbon pollution from existing power plants. The resolution adopted by the AMA House of Delegates further noted AMA’s intent to submit formal comments during the public comment period to “to underscore the need to keep the standards strong and protective of public health.”
