Earlier in the day, the Obama administration will release a new report from the Council of Economic Advisers and National Economic Council on the general economic benefits of road and bridge projects.

E.J. Dionne: Bordering on heartless

…. instead of dealing with this problem in a thoughtful way reflecting shared responsibility across party lines, President Obama’s critics quickly turned to the business of seeking political gain. Last week, the only issue that seemed to matter was whether Obama visited the border.

It’s not just partisan politics, either. It should bother religious people that politicians pay a lot of attention when conservative church leaders speak out against contraception and gay rights but hardly any when religious voices suggest that these children deserve empathy and care.

There are those in our clergy who could usefully consider whether they speak a lot louder when they’re talking about sexuality than when they’re preaching about love….

BBC: Israel’s Gaza campaign in seventh day, amid rocket fire

Israeli air strikes on Gaza and rocket fire on Israel have continued as Israel’s operation against Palestinian militants entered its seventh day.

Palestinian officials say 172 people in Gaza have been killed since the offensive began last Tuesday.

Israel says nearly 1,000 rockets have been fired from Gaza in that time. It said it shot down a Palestinian drone near Ashdod on Monday morning.

Thousands of people fled their homes in northern Gaza after an Israeli warning. The Israeli military dropped leaflets over the town of Beit Lahiya, warning of impending attacks.

Israel has massed thousands of troops on the border with Gaza amid warnings it is prepared to launch a ground invasion.

Cyd Zeigler: Dan and I debated whether to post this on Facebook. Ultimately we decided to share what we believe is yet another incredible symbol of hope for our community from a President who has been the most powerful partner we have ever had in the White House.

When we received this letter in the mail last night, we were overwhelmed. It’s not every day you get a letter from the President. This wasn’t just another copy with a fake signature – the ink bled through the paper. For just a few brief seconds, our relationship was the focus of the desperately busy lives of the President and First Lady. To two regular guys from humble families, that’s insane.

While we certainly know the President has done so much for LGBT equality, it hit us both then – in our bedroom staring at this letter – how much our equality means to President Obama…

    RIP Ms. Gordimer. Magnificent voice!

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – South African Nobel Prize-winning author Nadine Gordimer, one of the literary world’s most powerful voices against apartheid, has died at the age of 90, her family said on Monday.

Gordimer died peacefully at her Johannesburg home on Sunday evening in the presence of her children, Hugo and Oriane, a statement from the family said.

UGH. I cannot believe we have such a coward sitting in that chair, second in line to the presidency.

I also can’t believe his rude behavior with those two young girls. He couldn’t stop with his breakfast and turn and look at them and be honest. Can you imagine POTUS doing that? Boehner is really the WORST.

Has anyone heard how the Dems plan to organize this Fall to turnout the vote. Now that OFA is a 501C (4) and is organized to support the Presidents causes and not individual candidates what happens to their mailing (contact) list?

    • July 14, 2014 at 10:55 am

I’ve been wondering the same thing, Donna. Our local Dem org is organizing some voter reg drives but I’m getting anxious and not seeing a lot of anything else.

      • 67 donna dem 4 obama
        July 14, 2014 at 11:05 am

Me either. I was sort of hoping that by now that there would be more movement but the focus has been on the Presidents agenda. I’m going to email my Dem Party chair lady and ask her how this is going to work this year.

I know that most people feel that all politics is local but under these circumstances I would like to see the Democrats nationalize the elections this year as well as promoting their candidates. PBO is so popular among his base that I really feel that we could rally our supporters if we talked more about how ineffective the Republicans as a whole are at governing and getting them fired up by talking about how PBO has been treated since taking office. I would make that lawsuit a big deal with his supporters and cast it as their way of just not accepting the results of two elections.

        • July 14, 2014 at 11:12 am

I think that’s a great idea and one we should definitely implement. This lawsuit could be a flashpoint to get people to the polls to defend our POTUS and all the gains we’ve made over the last 6 years on many fronts. It needs to be emotional.

Donna, I think the contact list was absorbed by the state Democratic Parties who incorporated it into Vote Builder. Vote Builder is kept up with new voter registration data as it comes in. I know all new voters are incorporated by our local party into the central date base and then one of our team sends a welcome brochure to the new voters. This month, official campaign reps came to our county and they are working full time, building outreach teams. They are modelling their efforts on the president’s campaigns.

Prison food supplier has Michigan officials at wit’s end

    July 13, 2014

LANSING — Maggots in the kitchen and on the chow line. Workers caught smuggling contraband or engaging in sex acts with inmates. Food shortages and angry prisoners.

Those are among the problems that have plagued Michigan prisons since December when the state — in a move aimed at saving more than $12 million a year — switched from using state workers to feed prisoners to a private contractor, Aramark Correctional Services of Philadelphia.

Ongoing turmoil with the 7-month-old contract — including many instances never previously disclosed — is detailed in more than 3,000 pages of state records obtained by the Free Press under Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act: One Aramark food service director showed up drunk and failed a Breathalyzer. Another worker was caught trying to smuggle marijuana. Others have failed drug tests, kissed prisoners, threatened to assault inmates, or announced intentions to “go postal” inside a facility, records show.

I’m at my wit’s end,” Kevin Weissenborn, the Michigan Department of Corrections manager in charge of policing the Aramark contract, e-mailed one Michigan warden in March, records show.

Morning everyone… this may be totally true, but somehow I don’t think this will shut them up.

Conservatives are stuck in a perpetual outrage loop. The reappearance of Todd Akin, the horror-movie villain immortality of Sarah Palin, the unseemly celebration of the Hobby Lobby decision – these all speak to a chorus of “la-la-la-can’t-hear-you” loud enough to drown out the voice of an entire generation. Late last week, the Reason Foundation released the results of a poll about that generation, the millennials; its signature finding was the confirmation of a mass abandonment of social conservatism and the GOP. This comes at a time when the conservative movement is increasingly synonymous with mean-spirited, prank-like and combative activism and self-important grand gestures. The millennial generation has repeatedly defined itself as the most socially tolerant of the modern era, but one thing it really can’t stand is drama.

    • 101 amk for obama
      July 14, 2014 at 11:55 am

The vote overturns centuries of tradition in a Church that has been deeply divided over the issue. It comes more than 20 years after women were first allowed to become priests.

The vote followed after almost five hours of debate at the University of York.

The motion had the backing of the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and Prime Minister David Cameron.

The crucial vote in the House of Laity went 152 in favour, 45 against, and there were five abstentions.

In the house of Bishops, 37 were in favour, two against, and there was one abstention. The House of Clergy voted 162 in favour, 25 against and there were four abstentions.
