Thanks amk – sure highlighted my thoughts on the DUMB of our media showing John McCain giving his view of current events. The man has no shame – and no memory.

Saw this last night, AMK, and it’s an invaluable piece for gaining perspective, which most of our most vocal politicians lack. I remembered clearly all the events that Zakaria referred to and recalled the feelings of horror. Yesterday was unique in that it all seemed to be happening at once.

I was channel flipping yesterday, landed on Ed’s show to hear Patrick Murphy saying that Pres. Obama needs to channel Ronald Reagan in dealing with current crises. I was surprised, but even more so at the immediate fierce push back he got from Ed saying PBO didn’t need to channel anybody, especially Reagan. That PBO was elected to get us out and keep us out of wars. Wow.

    • July 18, 2014 at 8:55 am

I worked so hard to get Patrick Murphy elected. He replace that idiot West. He has voted against and spoken against President Obama and the Democrats on so many issues. He is a DINO. I am so disappointed.

      • 37 Vicki
        July 18, 2014 at 9:14 am

That is why Patrick Murphy was rewarded with his own (occasional) show. MSNBC searches for DINO’s that have fooled their constituencies. The better to fool you with, my dear……

Yes, Paulita. I answered your remark on the previous thread but it is worth repeating. Ed’s immediate and accurate push-back earned my respect and would be appreciated by all of us here at TOD. Ed is unreliable at times but when he is ON he is good. He loves PBO but Ed’s ego sometimes gets in his way.

What Reagan succeeded at is making americans believe in fantasy. The fantasy of an omnipotent USA. While in REALITY The “most powerful country of the world” is indeed powerful but can’t CONTROL everything !!

Americans have to GROW UP. And acknowledge that the world is very complex. That POWER is SHARED.

Important note: The USSR collapsed mostly ON ITS OWN and it’s foolish to attribute that to Reagan. That Reagan is responsible for the “win” of the cold war is a MYTH. And as far as Reagan goes, everything about him is a MYTH.

But WHY that MYTH ? Again, because Reagan told americans what they wanted to hear; he was very good at making americans feel good about their country. He sold the FANTASY. And boy, was he also good at playing the daddy who would protect the american “children” from harm.

Barack Obama has infinitely more wisdom, more understanding of the world, more understanding of what the role of the USA can be. He doesn’t treat americans like children, but like adults. He has worked like crazy to make americans GROW UP and embrace the REALITY of the 21th century world, while suggesting a realistic path for american leadership in the world. A leadership based on VALUES, not fear or control. A leadership aimed at building a more JUST, PEACEFUL world. A leadership based on the most PROFOUND of american values: the empowerment of individuals combined with a sense of community.

Barack Obama is the real deal. Reagan was just a MIRAGE.

Very sad news in my world tonight related to those on MH17, one local family lost loved ones on both MH17 and MH370 – too much to handle –

but by far the STUPIDEST nonsense was our “Washington correspondent” giving air time to John McCain. The man should have his mouth taped up.

      July 18, 2014 at 8:43 am

99ts, I’m so sorry for the tragic loss of your local family. Such horrific times for every family involved. I don’t know why so-called correspondents think anyone in the world wants to listen to John McCain. I can only suppose they get a bonus for putting on the stupid.

Thank you for your thoughts jackie, I know many more die on the roads but this was so unexpected and pointless. I did catch a discussion related to whether or not Putin would be welcomed to the G20 which is supposedly on here in November.

McCain is so out there wanting to give his opinion to anyone with a microphone – it’s past time that the pundits realised he has nothing useful to say. He truly should be put out to pasture.

My condolences to your local family, 99ts.

When I think of what so many have to face in the middle east – our losses in comparison are small – but for those who lose their families – it is everything

I am thinking of the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915 – the equivalent of our modern airplanes for civilian travel.

And so many thanks NW for all your work yesterday – you create a safe haven for all.

OMG, the hypocrisy is staggering. This war mongering SOB started it all and now that it’s bit him the ass, he’s all about ‘laying down arms.’ I hope the international reply is: “You first, Vlad. Give back Crimea, withdraw all your Russian-sponsored troops and all the equipment you supplied and take them back to Russia. Stop recruiting separatist terrorists and stop terrorizing Ukrainians. When you’ve done all of this, come back and talk. “

Please take the time to read Juan Cole’s article on why Israel will fail in Gaza, even though many will be killed and their living spaces destroyed. According to Cole, there’s only one way out and that’s through negotiated settlement. Bibi is the George Bush of Israeli–acting first and thinking later.

Please let us get through a day without more heartbreaking news, although how that’s going to be possible with Israel bent on murdering Palestinians, I can’t imagine.

Indeed. This was a great article. At times like these people tend to get all hyperbolic “OMG-The world is ending” and some do it on purpose for clicks/ratings, while they sit back and watch others get riled up and agitated.

HF, it was all of it coming on the same day. If the Russian and Israel insanity hadn’t occurred simultaneously, we might have been better able to hand it. But so much senseless death and destruction–virtually within minutes of each other–is hard on the nervous system.

        • 92 hopefruit2
          July 18, 2014 at 9:31 am

Yes, quite understandable JG. Yesterday a lot went down – and reactions of concern and anxiety were normal. But I’m referring to some in the media who should know better…and who were riling up folks while having fun…For. E.g., MSNBC with Andrea Mitchell bringing on John Mccain to stir up the pot with his ill-advice was just irresponsible in my opinion

There’s a reason PBO continued his normal routine and only gave a brief statement. Because bad decisions are made in moments of frenzy, when 50% of the facts are unknown or distorted. He’s witnessed this in his history of politics – and those in the media know this too well…

Thank goodness we have a cool-headed President whose quiet self-assuredness and steady hands speak volumes at times like this. 🙂

This may not be politically correct, Hopef, but I confess that one of the things that sustain me through the irresponsible contributions of the likes of Mitchell and McCain (and a few others) is that their appearance + their hatred make me think they cannot be long for this world.

And TPM give him voice – as they give every other RWNJ space.

There is NO war that John McCain would vote against. I see in the article he is giving all the blame for Iraq to Colin Powell. The latter carries much blame – but do they all forget the words that EVERY President must know “the buck stops here”. GWB ruined the reputation of the US in the eyes of every nation in the world. PBO is well performing the task of changing that viewpoint. McCain does the opposite – he makes us realize how much GWB and his congress damaged the US.

The entire editorial page of The New York Times is worthy of widespread duplication.
The truth about the origin of the Gaza tragedy, which I cited last night.
Then the story about Germany and its Soccer success.
Next a sharper more pointed finger by Paul Krugman on the entire Lie and ignorance that CNBC and so-called business TV news display every day.
And last, but not least–A Clean Power-Off The Grid essay.

    So, 1) Mid-east truth
    2) Climate Change Wisdom
    3) How great soccer teams are made
    4) A ray of economic light amid the forest of darkness and deceit.

Authors—Paul Krugman, Roger Cohen, David Hayes, Nathan Thrall

Perhaps BT can post some of these worthy writings.

We are horrified by the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17. There are no words adequate to express our condolences to the families of the nearly 300 victims. We offer our sympathies and support to the Governments of Malaysia and the Netherlands at this difficult time, as well as to all those whose citizens may have been on board. We are reviewing whether any American citizens were aboard the flight. The United States Government remains prepared to assist with a credible, international investigation any way we can, and we will continue to be in touch with all relevant partners as we seek the facts of what happened today.
