    Good morning, TOD.

      Good mooooooorning Tnmtngirl!

      • July 22, 2014 at 7:44 am

Blessed and enjoyable day to all here. This is my serve in our food pantry (Manna House) day, then yoga early afternoon. I’ll be lurking as I can. 🙂

      • July 22, 2014 at 8:11 am

        Congrats on #1, tnmtngirl!

Kudos to you for volunteering at your local food bank.

Interestingly, my local food bank is also called Manna. I thought it was a local organization, but it might be national?

Great to hear you’re into yoga — has your husband been on any good hikes this year, or has the weather not cooperated?

        • July 22, 2014 at 9:04 am

No, not part of national organization. What our church named our pantry years ago. We serve an average of 800 families every month. My husband is actually doing a thru hike on the AT. He is doing it as a chaplain for our conference (Holston) of the UMC. He is currently in VT, scheduled to summit Mt Katahdin in early September. Thanks for asking about him.

          • July 22, 2014 at 10:15 am

Have you or your husband read A Walk In The Woods by Bill Bryson? He is a very funny writer and this is his account of his attempt to thru hike the A.T. I highly recommend it.

      • July 22, 2014 at 9:52 am

Hey Chips! Good Morning all. Hope our wonderful president has a fantastic day in honor of my birthday 🙂 🙂 🙂

    • July 22, 2014 at 7:42 am

Good Morning Tnmtngirl! Congrats and enjoy your day! 🙂

    Good Tuesday Chipsticks…TODers!!!

Run-off Elections here today. Only a couple of items on my ballot, but the big item is on the Republican ballot to determine who will be running against Michelle Nunn [U.S. Senate Seat] in November. At any rate, I’ll be heading out later this morning to cast my vote.

Everyone have a FANTASTIC day!!!! 😀

Repeating from end of last post….

“Texas Gov. Rick Perry orders 1,000 National Guard troops to border”

Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced plans Monday to deploy as many as 1,000 National Guard troops to the state’s border with Mexico, faulting federal officials for “empty promises” in dealing with an influx of Central American children and families.

Perry said the Guard will provide support over the next month to Operation Strong Safety, the state-funded border surge he declared last month. The state operation, which includes sending state troopers to the border to assist local law enforcement, costs $1.3 million a week; the combined operation will cost more than $17 million a month. It’s unclear how it will be funded, Perry said.

A guard spokeswoman, Lt. Col. Joanne MacGregor, later clarified that troops will operate under the state Department of Public Safety’s “umbrella” and “we will not exceed their authorities.”

Texas state and local law enforcement officers cannot enforce federal immigration law, meaning they cannot detain people based solely on their immigration status. But they can refer those they suspect have entered the country illegally to the Border Patrol.

I’m sure that $17 million a month could be put to better use if the main purpose of the National Guard’s presence is show of force and deterrence. Doesn’t sound like it will stop the flow of mothers and children coming to the border. I guess Perry continues to have these photo-ops to try to make himself relevant for 2016.

So are they going to shoot the children? Blow them up? They could provide them food & sustenance for years on that monthly amount of money – and this is the state governor who will not provide health care for its people because – costs too much!

War & hate – the only things the GOP wants to finance.

      • July 22, 2014 at 8:00 am

Those same “leaders” who have no qualms about spending millions..billions when it comes to using the military as bullies [whether at home or abroad] are always crying about government overspending and are continuously obstructing when it comes to spending for those in need.

This overpriced production does nothing to improve Perry’s image if that’s his goal.

      July 22, 2014 at 7:55 am

That’s exactly what it sounds like, SW. He’s showing himself to be a Bush clone. Spend lots of money to look macho, regardless of the cost to your state or the impact of your decision on the actual problem. I hope there comes a day when a smart and humane candidate has a chance to be governor of Texas. I fear Texas voters won’t be see that they have that person in Wendy Davis.

      July 22, 2014 at 8:23 am

“Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said the state was seeking legal consultation regarding funding for “Operation Strong Safety.” He said that the state will work with officials in Washington, D.C. on funding options.

“Texans are willing to put boots on the ground, but we expect Washington to foot the bill,” he said.”

Gosh – they want federal money – for their private war

      • July 22, 2014 at 9:16 am

If this isn’t talking from both sides of your mouth, I don’t know what is.

Why don’t Perry and Abbott both just say, “We’re not happy with a Black man in the White House, so we’re going to drain his coffers as much as we can, to Hell with American taxpayers.”

I’m sure hoping that the Obama Administration refuses to pay for the stupid of Rick Perry – what are these troops going to do. The children are giving themselves up – no-one is “hunting” them.

Hi swbluega – I did have a great day today – out to lunch with some new found cousins, older relatives and of course, daughter and grandbabe. One of those lunches that goes on and on until the staff stand behind you asking if you need anything else! Family has the most healing qualities – would love to know how we can expand that to nations.

        Enjoy your day.

Dutch UN Security Council Response to the Malaysia Airlines Crash

Karel J.G. van Oosterom, the Dutch Permanent Representative to the U.N., discusses his country’s support of a Security Council resolution demanding international investigators have access to the crash site of a Malaysia Airlines plane shot down near the Ukraine-Russia border.

The pressure from its citizens on the Dutch government must be fierce. No response from them is going to be thought “enough” with so much tragedy wreaked on one country. I hope they now willingly participate in strong, crippling sanctions on Russia.

  6. July 22, 2014 at 8:07 am

From the previous post it was noted that it has been a year since Nerdy joined forces with Chips to run the blog, and I want to thank them for an outstanding job. This place has become my source for news and I truly appreciate all you both and the other BTs do. LL, your essays are magnificent. And the other folks like Bobfr, Japa, Hopefruit, Desertflower, AMK, Donna, and so many more people add so much wisdom and knowledge that this place is a fantastic resource. Everyone should come here to really know the truth.
On another note, I know Hillary has been mentioned many times . I have received three “Are you ready for Hillary” letters. The first two I sent back with a note saying I am not ready for Hillary but I am ready for the 2014 elections and so should she. I figured after two times the people sending this would get the message but no, I received a third yesterday. This one went straight to the garbage.
Have a good day all and thanks again for this blog.

HRC and PUMAs only care about themselves.

Have never seen such a selfish bunch of politically aware people on the Democratic side before, enabled by the MSM/GOP/Koch brothers who rub their hands with glee at the thought of crushing the Clintons.

So the numbskulls on TV will not be happy until President Obama calls Putin and yells, “Vlad, you are a THUG! And a poopy face! I’m never talking to you again! GOOD BYE!” and slams down receiver, if such emphasis was still possible.
    Juvenile brains.

And if he did that they would call him out for not being diplomatic in how he relates to Putin. PBO will never get positive responses from the current GOP and media – I am so pleased he just does his job and ignores their stupid.

      • July 22, 2014 at 9:23 am

        Greetings 99…

Yesterday at the My Brother’s Keeper Town Hall event…a young man asked the President how does he cope with the negative things that are said about him….

he gave a great answer….he said that when you are young you do care more about what is said but as you grow older and you learn more about who you are and what you want to do…those things become your focus and not what others say….he also said talked about the difference between constructive and destructive criticism…..and gave examples of the difference..

it was so very nice to listen to the President talk honestly to the young people and the their families and it was gratifying to see the adults nod their head in agreement to what the President was saying…

        • 32 99ts
          July 22, 2014 at 9:34 am

Amazing man, the world and these young men, are so lucky to have him.

Sometimes I think I care more about what is said than does my daughter. She is so confident in her belief system & lectures me to be the same – sometimes it was ingrained in our upbringing to “abide by what society thinks”. It takes time, for me, to realize society is wrong.

          • July 22, 2014 at 2:16 pm

What a wise statement of our generation being taught to abide by what society thinks. I remember during the Vietnam Era, hippies, flower children and drug usage being of the opposite side due to abiding in what society thought. I was brought up to be a pleaser and suffered from worrying about what others thought. My oldest daughter like yours led me into trusting myself thus my research instead of just believing the news. All of the above lead me into checking out Senator Barack Obama and my total support. People can change their ways even in later life.

        • July 22, 2014 at 10:09 am

Last night I watched the whole thing. I found it very moving. The President didn’t shy from expressing his deepest feelings. He is a wonderful, thoughtful, honest, empathetic human being. And what a wonderful teacher he is. Just wow.

    • July 22, 2014 at 8:31 am

Hasn’t Putin’s weasel-like reaction to this senseless slaughter of Dutch best and brightest convinced even RWNJs and emoputins of what a coward Putin is?

Next he’ll be blaming the horrific crash on someone’s mother. Sheesh.

  8. July 22, 2014 at 8:13 am

Just heard on the radio that the national rate of poverty for children now is almost 25%, while it was 16% at the turn of the century (I’m assuming they meant 1900).

Even reliably conservative CBS radio news said it was “troubling.”

Didn’t hear the specifics, but will look for more info.

I don’t know if this has been posted before but its an excellent review of the blowback consequences of both Putin and Netanyahu’s attempts to use war to gain popularity at home. Bibi’s very ill-considered war against Palestinians is likely to cause him the far greater damage and create real risks to Israel’s future survival.

Oh heck, soooooooo true Arapaho415, a complete mystery!!!!! 😆

    • July 22, 2014 at 8:48 am

😀 I can appreciate that one Arapaho415. The other mystery for me is how dogs seem to be able to hear you opening their food/treat container — sometimes even from outside — but sometimes can’t seem to hear you when you’re standing in front of them giving a command.

    • July 22, 2014 at 9:19 am

I have always laughed at dogs sniffing each other’s butts. Can you imagine what life would be like if humans did that? We would never get anything else done!

LH, he’s a Republican and so gets praise. If it were a Democratic governor, he would be condemned. WP and NYT are as guilty as anyone. They live in a world where macho cred is all that matters.

      • July 22, 2014 at 9:47 am

It’s really amazing JG. The puff pieces on Rick Oops Perry are pathetic and embarrassing. Eric Boehlert is not holding back …..

      • July 22, 2014 at 10:13 am

Fear brings people to wish for authoritarian leadership. Macho leadership. Bringing the National Guard is NO real solution, but it reassures people.

What President Obama is proposing is much more intelligent, effective, sensible. But in matters of PR, it’s a more difficult strategy to “sell”.

        • July 22, 2014 at 10:18 am

And the media people are not very sophisticated, to say the least. Some of it is corporate bias, republican bias even. But sometimes I also wonder if it’s, simply, the fact that the people who ascend to national prominence in the media are, mostly, careerists who are better at advancing themselves than at analyzing things. They’re not competent analysts, plain and simple. Not sophisticated minds. So they fall in the trap of the simplistic tactics of the GOP.

Plane crash followed NATO alert on rebel capability

Rachel Maddow whittles away the unsubstantiated reports in the Malaysia Airlines plane crash investigation and points out that NATO warned the world on June 30th that Russia was training Ukrainian separatists on vehicle-borne anti-aircraft capability.

I cannot figure out how to link to the exact video…but it is the first one from last Friday the 18th. Absolutely NOONE else has reported on this.

The NATO report begins around the 16 min. mark.

Israel appears to have had no clue as to the existence of the tunnels into Israel.
Yet, with No evidence they insist that Hamas hides weapons in hospitals and schools and homes.

I believe that Israel knows that they are lying and they Do Not Know any of Hama’s secrets.
Not only the “surprise tunnels” but Ayman Mohyeldin yesterday reported on an extensive network of Hamas hospitals and other facilities.

Israel is demolishing Gaza. Starving it of food, water, electricity, housing, hospitals. Demolition is the action and the intent.
      Stopping rockets is the excuse.

A Bad Sign For Boehner as Judge Throws Out Senator’s Obamacare Lawsuit

Here is the reason why Speaker John Boehner’s lawsuit is likely to go nowhere. A federal judge in Wisconsin threw out an Obamacare lawsuit by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) because the senator lacked standing.

Sen. Johnson was challenging an Obama administration rule that allowed congressional staffers to get subsidies while signing up for Obamacare. The judge in the case, William Griesbach, a 2002 Bush appointee warned Johnson that standing can’t be based on his own subjective views.

The “optics” of a drunken House speaker, slurring his words, crying for no reason, giving in to the extreme factions of his party while ignoring the needs of the country, matter very little to the media.
