Good morning, Chips, VC and early TODers. Last night’s tribute to Mike Brown was deeply moving and beautiful. There is no other site with the compassion, sensitivity– not to mention relentless reporting–of TOD. I feel sorry for people who don’t have this resource to come to every day. We are all better people for being here.

Good Morning, JackieG! I am still perusing the tribute post, while feeling good at how fortunate we are to have the chance to make our virtual home here.

ps: Are you going to do a couple of test-tweet-a-picture runs today (grabbing pictures from ‘the Google’) so that you’ll be an expert by tomorrow’s Latina festival?

VC, I am so frantic with stuff to do before tomorrow and rain is forecast, so I’m depressed as well. I’m going to have this fiesta if I have to do it soaking wet, so don’t know if I can manage a photo tweet today. Yesterday, I was sick and spent the day trying to get a quick visit into the doc and some medication. What a week!!!

I will cross my fingers that the weather tomorrow will be great, or if not great then bearable, for your fiesta. Hopefully you all can have access to some cover if all does not go as you wish weather-wise. Will be thinking of you! Take care of your health, please.

Yo, you! Do you happen to have a jackfruit tree on your premises? I was just reading an email a friend sent me about the wonderful medicinal properties of all parts of the jackfruit, even the tree bark and the roots and leaves. Apparently the fruit is greatly prized in India. Is that the truth? And if *your* jackfruit tree is bearing fruits right now, would you please send one (or two) by overnight courier, so that I can test a few of their claims? Thanks in advance, vc.

No, I don’t. But there is a nearby town Panruti where it grows plenty. But us indians eat only the delish fruit.

                  August 22, 2014 at 9:47 am

So the article lied. Sigh. It told this touching story of how the people of Bali had to go to so much effort, up mountains and all, to harvest jackfruits, then went on to say how it was used for a gazillion cures in India, etc. etc. [Yes, I know that’s two different places, but supposedly the author lived in India for a while and discovered its many uses there.

                  O, I forgot; since Panruti is nearby, how about taking a walk there this eve before your bedtime and picking up a couple of jfs for me? Send them with some of the leaves, please. I still want to test out some of the touted medicinal properties, and plan to try the leaves as tea – I am particularly fond of herbal teas. {See that Meta!}

Jackfruit is here in the States. I see it at the West Indian markets. You maybe can find it at the Spanish fruit markets if you live near one. I will look at see if I see it in cans, maybe brined and canned and let you know. Also try Amazon.com. They might have it there.

Hi, Ms Pat. Thank you so much for your suggestions. 🙂 I know I can get jackfruit in the West Indian stores here when it is ‘in season’, and I live about 45mins away from a really good WI store. However, faced with the option of getting my own jackfruit tree (from the motherland, so to speak), I simply could not turn down Amk’s kind offer. Think of it, I wouldn’t have to get in the car and drive, instead I could just meet the Purolator guy at the door, or better yet, step into the backyard and pick a fresh, ripe, jackfruit. Honestly, my mouth waters at the very thought!

Somewhat O/T: I wonder if I could convince Michelle to add a jackfruit tree to the WH greenhouse? hmmmm

In other news….Way to go, Vlad!!

Russia’s embargo on imported Western food is hitting its own people, as food prices in Moscow shops have jumped by up to 6% in just a week.

Moscow officials say frozen fish prices in the capital’s major supermarkets have risen by 6%, milk by 5.3% and an average cheese costs 4.4% more than it did before the 7 August ban took effect.

Russia has banned imports of those basic foods, as well as meat and many other products, from Western countries, Australia and Japan. It is retaliation for the West’s sanctions on Russia over the revolt by pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine.

And it is not just Moscow. On the island of Sakhalin, in Russia’s far east, officials say the price of chicken thighs has soared 60%. Before the sanctions these were among the cheapest and most popular meat products in Russia.

In the neighbouring Primorye region fish is now reportedly 40% more expensive than just a few weeks ago.

Starving his citizens too..because, the West is mean. Great job, bozo!

There is one error in that article snippet posted here.

” the West’s sanctions on Russia over the revolt by pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine” is incorrect. The sanctions are not due to the pro-Russian separatists, it is due to Russia aiding and assisting those separatists, and possibly even initiaing military action against Ukraine.

I see the smearing of Dorian Johnson has begun…….

    • August 22, 2014 at 9:12 am

Saw that on CNN last night Linda, Anderson Cooper going on about a conviction he had for a false report. Which is fair enough, his history will be scrutinized any way if there is a trial, but it would be so nice if the media were equally curious about Wilson’s history and that of the Ferguson PD. And if they didn’t rush to report the claims of Wilson’s buddies, eg the eye socket. The reporting is even worse than I feared.

      • August 22, 2014 at 9:31 am

Yes, but there are other *independent* witness accounts that corroborate Johnson’s account. Will all of these witnesses also be subject to a smear campaign?

Plus the whole idea that Wilson will possibly be able to present his story to the grand jury. How is this acceptable when, as one of LOD’s guest stated, the purpose of the prosecutor to put the case before a grand jury is to get an indictment; not clear the accused. A preliminary hearing would have been more acceptable. At least it would have been more transparent to everyone.

        • August 22, 2014 at 9:49 am

“Yes, but there are other *independent* witness accounts that corroborate Johnson’s account.”

Exactly right swbluega, and we know what will happen – every single one of them who offers to give evidence will be smeared.

“Michelle Nunn, David Perdue face off in debate in Macon”

MACON, Ga. (AP) — Democrat Michelle Nunn on Thursday ramped up her attacks on Republican David Perdue in Georgia’s closely watched Senate race, portraying her opponent as an obstructionist who would continue gridlock in Washington.

She also called out Perdue over his opposition to the academic standards known as Common Core, the most recent farm bill and a bipartisan plan for immigration reform.

Within minutes of winning the election for the Republican nomination, David said this election is about prosecuting the administration and the president,” Nunn said.

Perdue did not respond directly to Nunn’s attacks and instead focused on criticizing Democratic policies from the federal health care law to environmental regulations.

A couple of her ads highlights out how Romney-esque David Perdue is:

    • August 22, 2014 at 9:20 am

She’s behind by 6. I say, put all the money in Louisiana, Arkansas and NC to save the senate.
      God save the senate. 🙂

    • 90 99ts
      August 22, 2014 at 9:21 am

Good to see that she – at last – mentioned the President

“Within minutes of winning the election for the Republican nomination, David said this election is about prosecuting the administration and the president,” Nunn said.”

      • August 22, 2014 at 9:40 am

Also in Romney fashion, during the primary, Perdue attacked his opponents for being a part of the gridlock in Washington; representing them as babies in his ad. Now, for the general election, he seems to be open in his intent to do the same.

What ELSE I see happening ( I think) is the guy in the background looking to me like HE might actually be stealing something! Could this be a case of mistaken identity? Desertflower, I HATE linking to the Daily Mail, but there’s a clearer video there of the guy in the background, it looks like he’s paying the woman who just went behind the counter – scroll down to the ‘Surveillance: Michael Brown suspected in ‘strong-arm’ robbery video:

      What do you think?

      • 111 desertflower
        August 22, 2014 at 10:09 am

It won’t play for me, CHips…sometimes certain videos DON’T play for me and I have no idea why…this one won’t. On the video I posted, it appears to me as if that guy in the background slips something into his pocket and casually walks out of the store…all this is happening as Mike appears to be paying for his stuff. Is it possible that this IS mistaken identity…that the little dustup with the store manager or whoever that worker was, is because he mistook Mike for the guy that was already out of the store that never paid…and MIke is pissed because he was just accused of doing something that he DIDN’T do…but the guy that actually DID steal something is out the door and long gone?? This is what my eyes see…this is how this feels in my gut now…

        • August 22, 2014 at 10:22 am

I have that problem with videos all the time DF, they work in some browsers, not in others. Here’s the video:

From 0:33 you see a shop worker coming out from the back and going in behind the counter, the guy goes up to her and appears to pay for what he’s picked up, I think he’s putting the change in his pocket.

      • 116 desertflower
        August 22, 2014 at 10:13 am

There’s also THIS from the story at this post:

Whatever words were exchanged between the man in the video and the store owner, they were not considered very serious, as the store owner nor the employees did not report a theft at the store. According to the stores attorney, the owners were bewildered when the police approached them demanding the surveillance tapes.

Dear Chips and hopefruit, I love and respect you both but on Chris Hayes, at least for now, perhaps we may agree to disagree. I see that tweet as coming from a man whose eyes are opening and who is struggling to make sense of what he sees.
He is trying to put a name on it, to use current lingo.
Is he also hoping for recognition?
Sure. So far, though, I believe in Chris Hayes’ good will.

I most definitely have a HUGE bias against him, as you’ll have spotted 🙂 I dislike him so much I can’t even watch him, I just see the occasional tweet from him. My sense about him is always that he’s a privileged smart ass who has lived in a bubble, and that what’s happening in Ferguson shocks him is kind of proof of that to me. He’s been in the media for years, he has his own show, the lives of communities like the one in Ferguson, and their treatment at the hands of the police, shouldn’t be a surprise to him, if he’d done his job and opened his eyes he would have known already. But if they’re open now, and that’s good.

Vicki I really wish I could put a good spin on this. But try as I may – I can’t.

If Hayes is not equipped to comment on these complex situations – perhaps he should just refrain from commenting at all. Because these vague assessments actually confuse readers, and are not helpful in the grand scheme of getting people to understand what’s really at play.

I think Hayes is trying to have it both ways – he has a Libertarian audience that he needs to satisfy. On the other hand, he has to demonstrate some degree of empathy given what he experienced in Ferguson. The problem is that you cannot use an incident that is unambiguously racially-driven to placate your libertarian followers without coming off like a phony asshole to those on the other side. It just won’t work.

I think a better word would have been oppression, not occupation. You disagree?

And the term “millions and millions of Americans” seems to deliberately obscure the racial component that is so unmistakable in the Ferguson case.

Oppression might be more accurate, df.
I think occupation comes to mind when the police turn out the street lights and use night vision goggles, which happened in Ferguson. Hard not to link mentally to Gaza which Israel claims to have left, but turns off water and electricity at whim.

Ok, everyone. I see I am in a resounding minority here. From which I conclude that I am probably wrong about Chris Hayes.

But Vicki, I’m in the minority here about Manchester United, but I’m completely right – so you might be too 🙂

I am more likely wrong but here is a fact to consider: Chris Hayes grew up in The Bronx in a working class family and went to a public high school. A good one, though, Hunter in Manhattan. Then, on to Brown university. Next I will look up the bio on the truly detestable Ezra.
