Referring back to the chart of potential numbers of Western nation fighters in Syria. There is a solid reason England and France have the most: colonial oppression of countries in the Middle East. They were heavy handed, and had to be forced to give up their power, and resentment simmers long and deep. Fortunately, we never did have colonies in the ME…..but England and France are now reaping the whirlwind.

To compare us to them shows lack of historical knowledge, typical of right wing yellers.

Agree, carolyn. I saw a great movie a few years ago about rage in Paris from their Algerian citizens still infuriated at the french Gov’t. “Cache” with Juliet Binoche and other big stars. Colonial injuries run very deep,

    Reality ….

    • September 1, 2014 at 12:37 pm

      This is not hyperbole …

“Russia has lost the hybrid war in Ukraine. Our Armed Forces have boldly crushed the bands of Russian mercenaries and destroyed the terrorists and secret agents. That is exactly why the Kremlin was forced to move to a full-scale invasion, using its regular troop on Donbas territory. Today we are dealing with divisions and regiments. Tomorrow it may be corps.

The operation to free East Ukraine from terrorists is over. We must now urgently build a defense against Russia, which is trying not only to consolidate the territories previously occupied by the terrorists, but to advance on other areas of Ukraine. A major war has entered our home, a war that Europe has not seen since the Second World War. Unfortunately, the losses in such a war will no longer be calculated in the hundreds, the thousands, or even the tens of thousands. In unofficial channels, the Russian side has already repeatedly threatened to use tactical nuclear weapons against us if our resistance continues.”

Oh God! This is insanity. Just plain madness on Russia’s part.

          Yes it is, Jackie.

Anyone questioning why it was important for Polish Prime Minister Tusk to be elected EU President ….

“Donald Tusk, the head of the European Council, declared today that Ukraine is in a state of war. He has called on Europe to stand in defence of their ally. “It is incumbent on us to declare in a loud voice that all our initiatives aimed at helping NATO suceed in its commitments cannot be blocked. Today, as we watch the tragic events in Ukraine unfold, as we watch the war – that word must be used, because that is what it is – we know that September, 1939 cannot be repeated.””

            1 Sept 2014

Official statement of the Office of Prime Minister, Ukraine – PM Yatsenyuk

“It is time to call things by their right names. Russia and Vladimir Putin are waging a war. The Russian regime is responsible for the war in Europe, for killing our people, for stealing Crimea, for tormenting millions of Ukrainians. And all for his wish to restore the Soviet Union.
The Soviet Union had fallen. And anyone who attempts to restore any empire, will fall with the same disgrace as his predecessors did.
I am sure that we will deal with these challenges. First of all we need to count on our own strength. Self-organization of the whole Ukrainian nation. Struggle at every place, wherever one may be. And help the frontline.
When it comes to the military leadership, we need radical changes in it. I support the President’s position on this.
I would like to thank once again our soldiers who did not abandon their fellows, who did not surrender, who got out of the encirclement, and who are ready to fight again for our country.
            ‪#‎RussiaInvadedUkraine‬ ‪#‎UkraineUnderAttack‬”

#TrustBarack …. and be forever thankful on 1 Sept 2014 that he is President of the United States just as we should be forever grateful that FDR was on 1 Sept 1939.

    Hi TOD.
If you are like me and you were wondering what happened after Def Sec Hagel announced that Uruguay was ready to take 6 Guantanamo detainees, The NY Times had a sad follow-up this morning.

    Everything was in place.
The Uruguayan plane arrived in Cuba and sat on the tarmac for a few days.
Then, without explanation, the plane returned, empty, to Uruguay. I guess the gov’t there changed its mind.
Very frustrating for all prisoners and their guards in Guantanamo, a truly tragic place.

Thanks to the Obama poster on the right and Arapaho’s suggestion, I’ve come up with an idea to help Latinos associate President Obama with the need to vote this November. I have found through many, many discussions that while Latinos love our president, they have no understanding of the Democratic Party. So I am having a large poster made of the president with his phone and a stack of llX14 posters and I’m adding ‘Help President Obama. Vote Democratic in 2014.’ I am then going to place the posters in any Latino stores that will post them and on any public bulletin boards in our Latino neighborhoods. The large poster, I will donate to the county Democratic Party to put in their store-front window. Every vote makes a difference and if these posters get even a handful of Latino voters to the polls, it will be worth it. The cost of having this done at the local UPS is minimal and I’m fired up about the idea. And yes, I will credit the Georgia Democratic Party for the original artwork.

    Good Southwest morning to everyone!

My grandfather worked on the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay bridges and he was a strong union man. It was my mother’s responsibility to take Grandpa’s dues to the union hall every Tuesday. The union hall was a short distance from their home. Everyone there always greeted her warmly and always asked her to make sure to give regards to her father. Union tradition is strong in my family to this day. Hubby was a union steward and my sister is also a union steward.

    Have a Happy Labor Day!

What’s just laughable is that Russia keeps insisting it has no troops in Ukraine, as if all the intelligence evidence doesn’t exist.

  21. September 1, 2014 at 1:17 pm

My mom was a union member, and I’m glad I found a profession in which I could join a union.

      • September 1, 2014 at 1:40 pm

She’s an idiot and a troll.

For starters — On a per capita basis, Belgium has provided the largest number of ISIL/ISIS fighters.

        • September 1, 2014 at 1:42 pm

Wow, really Bob? I didn’t know that at all. Why Belgium?

          • September 1, 2014 at 2:26 pm

Lots of disaffected, unemployed, young, radicalized Muslims (as well as converts), Chips.

“The largely Antwerp-based Shariah4Belgium has – officially – voluntarily disbanded. Its former leader, Belkacem, is now imprisoned. The triumvirate that assumed leadership after him consisted of Hicham Chaib, Noureddine Abouallal and Feisal Yamoun. Of these, only Chaib remains alive. Abouallal died last summer while fighting in Syria while Yamoun – considered a key force in recruiting Belgian jihadists – was killed there in early February.

“I have been following the extreme Islamist movement in Belgium since 9/11,” Van Vlierden says, referring to the 2001 attacks on the United States, “and I think I can conclude that the ‘traditional’ terrorist scene that exists or existed in our country is of little importance when it comes to the Syria volunteers. Every now and then you will see people with a past in organizations linked to al Qaeda, such as the Groupe Islamique Combattant Marocain and the entourage of Malika El-Aroud, the infamous Belgian widow of one of the assassins of Ahmed Shah Masoud in Afghanistan. However, the fighters in Syria are not recruited from these circles.”

Van Vlierden sees the Belgian Syria recruits as part of a more complex and dangerous phenomenon, and points out the central role of young, quickly radicalized newcomers to extremist networks.

“Shariah4Belgium has been crucial in this process,” he adds. “In the beginning, few outsiders, including the authorities, took them seriously enough. They were seen as a loud-mouthed, but rather innocent group. Before the authorities reacted, they had hundreds of young supporters. When the authorities did react, these youngsters were sufficiently radicalized to see this as an additional motivation. When preaching on the streets, disturbing lectures and similar activities were no longer possible, fighting in Syria became what they saw as even better way of getting involved.””

Lots more details here about Belgium & The Netherlands role in supplying jihadists to ISIL/ISIS:

    1. New moniker for PUMAs: OverTheHillWithHillarians

    2. CNN has headline “Obama Hammered Over Foreign Policy,” making it appear that all persons on the globe have hammered him. Now, I may be older than Hillary, but one thing I am crystal clear about is that the American people DO NOT want more boots on the ground.

It’s people like Hillary – who would probably make McCain her Secretary of State (can’t ya just see that?) – and HillaryFavoringRuffianPageboyFluffianHusband’sAWarProfiteerShe’sGotAnUglySneer Di Fi whom I’d like to hammer. Oh, and, Hillary, you can’t touch Joe Biden!

The only thing bad about that last one is that I keep picturing Di Fi’s face.
