Your time conversions are impeccable at the minute – Monday 26th 10am

Australia Day is not something I get too enthused about any more – not a good date – arrival of the 1st white settlement. The native Australians call it Invasion Day.

And to make my point complete – the Prime Minister has celebrated by awarding an English knighthood to the Duke of Edinburgh – my head hurts from the stupid. The 1972 Labor government stopped issuing English awards and instigated a series of Australian awards of excellence – but they didn’t carry the title “Sir” with them. So a liberal government decided to bring them back – got to recognize those class distinctions.

            • January 25, 2015 at 7:06 pm

“…. the Prime Minister has celebrated by awarding an English knighthood to the Duke of Edinburgh…..”

Whaaaaaaat? So that crusty old bigot is now Sir Duke of Edinburgh??

Sir Australian D of E – or whatever – Tony (born in England) wants to make sure the Queen gives him a gong for his services to England.

The Queen has to approve these awards – shame she didn’t disallow this one – maybe she just giggled and said this might be a good way to get Tony out of Australian politics

I heard they were profiling Li Na, defending Australian Open champ. Guess I catch the video of that segment some other time.

And the first lady wearing a dress by an Indian designer. They think of every little detail to show respect for the people they’re dealing with..

    • January 25, 2015 at 7:17 pm

The Obama Administration has raised this to an artform.

Just mentioned to LL that I was glued to the NDTV broadcast this morning, and an array of Indian-Americans who traveled with PBO to India were interviewed (such as congressman Bera [D-CA]) who basked in the President’s reflected glory.

It’s such an excellent goodwill strategy by PBO’s team — means that the local audience will have Americans they can relate to, and hence have even warmer feelings for America and Americans.

      Love it.

      • January 26, 2015 at 8:11 pm

It is a goodwill strategy, and it flows from their innate graciousness and care for others. I think it must be as natural to them as breathing.

This collection of news items is dazzling! An amazing day for left leaning politics worldwide.
Lots to be happy about today. Unless you are David cameron. He is Not Happy.

On the other hand I am in NYC and need to get busy checking batteries and charging my phone. I will go out first thing tomorrow and fill up my refrigerator, just in case. Hurricane Sandy was 5 days without power, toilets, elevator service, phones, internet—OMG. And i live on the 20th floor.

It was the week before the 2012 election and I missed TOD more than most other things.

Wow, had no earthly idea that NYC experienced such outage with Hurricane Sandy.

Walking up 20 flights of stairs — kudos to you, Vicki.

Stay safe and warm — hope you can hunker down for the worst of it.

BTW, I’ve posted here a couple of times today that an arctic blast is predicted for the first week in February — wind chill to -30 in NJ. (See previous post for tweet link.)

Thanks Dudette and Bob. Since the no flushing toilets in 2012 i have enough bottled water on hand not to get caught unable to flush ever again.

      January 25, 2015 at 8:01 pm

ha! i was just over at youtube searching for a really good version of this song to post here. usually it’s offered as a chant, in honor of king david kalakaua (kawika means david in hawaiian). it tells of his lineage, and his people’s love for him. the ‘pua’ mentioned is a flower– kawika is the flower of his ancestral line. very classic hula selection.
