After All This, Has He Earned Nothing?

POTUS Mandate

****

“I take this personally.”

Those were President Barack Obama’s words yesterday at an Organizing for America meeting as he fought back against his critics over the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

The criticism from supposed “allies” like Elizabeth Warren, Allan Grayson, and the labor movement has increased in vitriol and volume.

“Show us the bill!”

“Why is it secret!?”

“This is NAFTA 2!!”

Everyone agrees that no one has seen anything of the deal aside from the summary. And, in perusing the summary, I don’t see anything which approaches an excuse for the Gotterdammerung levels of hysteria.

“It’s being negotiated in secret! It must be bad!”

Name me one treaty which has been negotiated live on C-SPAN.

“NAFTA was awful, so all trade pacts are awful!”

This is a very parochial view. Without growing trade, the economy won’t grow. And NAFTA provides lessons in how not to forge a trade pact, which Pres. Obama is following.

CDTojHaWYAIlXqG.jpg-large

“There are no wage/labor/environmental protections!”

That’s just false. The summary shows this. You can only believe this if you, without evidence, assume the summary is false propaganda.

And that last point leads into the meat of the essay.

“Obama must be lying. He’s sold us out. He’s the corporatist we always knew he was.”

Pres. Obama has operated under a handicap for the 6 and a half years of his presidency.

No, I’m not talking about him being the nation’s first African-American president. There is that. But I’ve come to realize that’s not his largest handicap.

No, I’m referring to the almost messianic hopes pinned on his presidency.

Yes, his campaign and governing themes have been “hope” and “change”. But I defy anyone to point to me where he says “I am the hope,” or “am the change.”

People heard the words “hope” and “change” and zoned out after that, without listening to the full message. “You are the hope.” “You are the change.”

Nothing is easy. Pres. Obama didn’t promise a path laid with primroses. He emphasized that nothing changes without struggle, without sweat. But Americans, being Americans, pinned all their hopes on a magical being. And when life, being what it is, turned out to be much messier than they had envisioned, they turned on a dime and blamed Pres. Obama.

“He betrayed us! There’s no change, no hope!”

CDTmEfaW0AAIEhJ.jpg-large

The change was in saving Detroit from bankruptcy, and the US (and the world) from a Second Great Depression.

The hope was in passing health reform, so that people no longer had to choose between keeping their homes or paying for health care.

He killed bin Laden, he wrenched the country on its opinion of same-sex marriage, he restored the country’s image in the world.

But it’s never good enough.

He will disappoint us. He will use us. He will turn out to be the empty suit we always thought he was.

Good lord, if Bill Clinton had achieved half the things Barack Obama has, no one would have cared if he’d received blow jobs from a string of high priced DC call girls.

CDTmbXRW4AEwP8d.jpg-large

But Pres. Obama is always to be distrusted, always has to re-establish trust, always has to prove his bona fides. Past is never prologue for him. There’s always the expectation that he’ll disappoint us in some existential way.

I’ve often said that “demography is destiny”, and that the Democratic Party had demography on its side. But the party is circling the drain to an even greater extent than the GOP. Democrats have to establish their “purity” by standing against the president. Republicans have to establish theirs by dragging him through the mud. And that’s why both parties are dead letters. Democrats because they can’t embrace the most successful Democratic president since Roosevelt. Republicans because they’re on a nihilistic binge. And I now understand why people don’t vote. Why? All they hear is the sniping, the noise, abetted by a bought and paid for media.

Barack Obama was president of the Harvard Law Review. He could have picked any plum job. He could have been the most successful of corporate lawyers. Instead, he became a community organizer. He worked with the powerless. He made them his life’s mission. And none of that is good enough.

Don’t you get it? Barack Obama is not Bill Clinton. He is not LBJ. He has not deceived, obfuscated, or prevaricated. He has not triangulated. He has not cheated on his lodestar. He has simply delivered on many of liberalism’s greatest wishes. No, he hasn’t earned blind loyalty; no one should. But he should have earned a large benefit of the doubt, and a bit of trust. That after seven years he has to prove himself time and again among so many of his “supporters” says nothing about him, but everything about them.

    ON POINTTTTTTTTT!!….

We have always been focused on the GOP and their racist notions….well the DEMS have theirs…and they have shown it so clearly…

they refuse to honor him…they refuse to tout his accomplishments…
they want to re-set the agenda to pre-Obama…

they want to dis the coalition…black and brown…esp….
they use us and the President when they need to and throw us away when they don’t…

but it is not like we did know this…we just hoped for better things….

prettyfoot—How I read the ACA hysteria from Day 1 was “We don’t want to share our healthcare or our money with black and brown folks.”
How I read the “We will fix Obamacare” sour faces from DNC during the mid-terms was “Anything the Black President does, we can improve.”

I love this so much LL, so many points that make you scream ‘yes!’

    And your conclusion:

“That after seven years he has to prove himself time and again among so many of his “supporters” says nothing about him, but everything about them.”

I’m inclined to start an LL 2016 campaign 🙂

    Thank you, you treasure.

I use to be proud to say I am a Democrat, no longer. Our supposed leaders in Congress make me ashamed…..that they can’t embrace what our President has done for this country over the past 6 years…he must Prove to them he is worthy on a daily basis.

Great essay LL. I understand the frustration many feel about how some on the Left are reacting to the TPP trade deal. The way they are acting is the reason most people hate politicians. As I have stated previously, this is unfortunately how politics is practiced, especially on the Dem side (i.e., they prey on the fears of their supporters, in this case unions, to fundraise and get attention). As per Greg Sargent today, PBO also sees the game being played and is calling the assholes out “On a conference call with a small group of reporters, President Obama significantly intensified his criticism of Elizabeth Warren and other opponents of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, accusing them of being “dishonest” about the secrecy around the TPP process, suggesting they were playing to their “fundraising” lists, and arguing flatly that they were using “misinformation that stirs up the base but doesn’t serve them well.” PBO explained the situation more eloquently than I could (no surprise there) and is calling out both the game being played those on the Dem side who are exploiting the situation. The fact that Warren is flatout lying in her complaints about secrecy in an attempt to gain TV time and donations should disqualify her from any discussions of her running for President. Same for O’Malley. Lying to exploit fears for financial or political gain demonstrates a lack of integrity that I cannot accept. I guess I am not as upset as some because (1) this is unfortunately how the game is played, (2) I was never a fan of either Warren or O’Malley or Maddow and (3) I am confident that PBO will prevail when all is said and done. The reason I am so confident is because experience clearly shows that it is foolish to bet against PBO (as all the achievement PBO has accompished during his presidency illustrates). PBO loves this country, not any particular political party (and especially not the Washington game). He will continue to drag this country (and unfortunately the whiny left) forward in a positive direction because that is what leaders do, and PBO is a great leader. History will be very kind to PBO, and all this noise and nonsense will be forgotten soon enough. Support PBO anyway you can, but don’t let the words of PBO’s inferiors (like Maddow, Warren, O’Malley or Brown) get you down. PBO has a very thick skin (he would not have made it as far as he has if he could not take the heat, be it justified or unjustified).

    .

I am deep in the middle of a stressful move, but I just had to chime in with a hearty “That’s right!”

A long time ago, I decided this President has shown his core and earned my trust in both his motives and methods.

A huge side eye to those in his party who choose to cause problems. No one who does not fully support the greatest president of my lifetime and all he has done will get ANY of my support for 2016.

Hi everyone! First let me apologize, I’ve been following this site for years but never posted. I was just so glad that this place existed. I just wanted to come by and say thank you to everyone here. I used to be very active in the 90s but I’m afraid that became very disheartened by what I saw as ideological elitism and nepotism (this was before I knew of the phrase emoprog) so I stepped away and couldn’t really find a new “home.” When PBO ran in 08 (I live outside of Chicago so I got to see him rise from the beginning) I got back into it and helped campaign for the first time in my life because I finally saw some forward thinking that was rooted in reality instead of symbolism for symbolism’s sake. I’m just happy there are others that agree with the magnitude of his presidency. Thank you again.

  24. April 24, 2015 at 2:09 pm

Thank you LL. I simply cannot believe how badly President Obama has been and is being treated by many in his own Party. As someone said, if it were not for RWNJs winning in 2016, I wouldn’t even vote.

The reason you don’t hear the Republicans talking about TPP is because they are in stunned silence over the Democrats attacking the best President this country has had in the last fifty-plus years.

  28. April 24, 2015 at 2:39 pm

As others here have done, I sent an encouraging note and huge thank you to the President last night. Just now, I called the WH comment line. Didn’t have to wait long at all. Shared my comment and in it made sure I made note of how furious I am at the Dems and their treatment of PO. The lady thanked me twice and ended by saying “You’re a good person.” Could tell she was touched with my message of support for PO and agreed with my comment about the Dems.

Congrats LL on another spectacular piece. Almost every time you articulate what so many of us are thinking and feeling…..so good to have our thoughts and feelings put into words. So we can say Amen, Amen, Amen…..and get up and stand up and let these people know why we are so disgusted with them. They are puny, petty little people……not one of them is worthy to tie PBO’s shoes!

O’Malley, Warren and all the others betraying the President. They are being courted by the people who do not want to see progress. Follow the money and see where all this controversy started. O’Malley is trying to raise money for his campaign but this way is not the best way and he will soon realize it. As for O’Malley I was rooting for him. No more. He should realize that he needs the President’s supporters if he wants to win the nomination. Joe Biden all the way; he is the only one that has the President’s back so far and if he changes I will drop him like a hot potato. But the President has plans for them this Saturday night; he is going to cut them a new ***hole.

Thanks LL for this amazingly on-point essay. I echo the sentiments of everyone here! I really didn’t think that after 6.5 years, a growing economy, ACA, end of two wars, so much progress on the policy front for LGBT, women, Native Americans, Latinos, Veterans, etc., that we would be subject to the emo-left’s grumbling about bullCHIT based on half-truths, lies, omissions.

Thanks, LL another brilliant essay! I was in D.C. yesterday; A friend went on a job interview & she wanted to explore the area so I went with her, and didn’t get back until late, so I’m just catching up.

President Obama made his remarks yesterday in front of the OFA Leadership Meeting. The President knows we are his base, not the emoprogs or the Clinton Dems in Congress, just my opinion. He wants us to show the facts on what is in the TPP and why it’s a good deal.
