Today’s White House Science Fair

“As a society, we have to celebrate outstanding work by young people in science at least as much as we do Super Bowl winners. Because superstar biologists and engineers and rocket scientists and robot-builders… they’re what’s going to transform our society. They’re the folks who are going to come up with cures for diseases and new sources of energy, and help us build healthier, more successful societies.” –President Obama

YW, Nena! Spent ~2 hours putting it together but I wanted to give Nerdy Wonka a break and hopefully, I covered all angles of one of the best events President Obama & the White House puts together nearly every year.

Wow, what Obots will do for TODville.

Impressed with your dedication to keep us all informed of such a fun event (which I missed 😦 ).

Will check out a bit later.

Gold star and an extra cookie for LP. Thank you!

You did a fantastic job, LP. Loved seeing the intelligence and innovation of these young people. It’s no wonder PBO loves these science fairs. When the world seems angry and partisan and problems seem impossible to solve, these young people provide a breath of fresh air and hope for the future.

Well this is a work of love and I am so moved by the overview. You are right, it is very powerful to see something of each of the fairs and to watch several clips of the President interacting with the budding scientists. Funny thing is a think adult engineers, scientists, makers of all stripes react to his enthusiasm when he comes to see the products of their labors just as much, almost as if the youthful idealism and pride of work returns when they see how the President reacts with bursting delight. This man is truly a fan of the America he is serving. We know it here and relish his trust in us. Someday many more will tell the tales like you have on this post. Thank you for your hard work on our behalf.

That’s your Republican-led Congress, doing nothing, trolling the country and then taking credit when someone manages to work around their obstruction long enough to save a few people or avert a crisis or two. Yeah, Republicans totally directed this Zika crisis y’all! They sat on their hands and refused to fund it for months and when the crisis grew they petulantly told the White House to steal money from Ebola, confident that their House leadership couldn’t pass even a dollar for an emergency health crisis.

“Republicans are going to look back on this time that they’ve had to act on the Zika virus and deeply regret it,” Earnest warned today.

This is Paul Ryan’s “leadership” in action; taking credit for something the President had to do in order to get around Ryan’s ineptitude as Speaker.

Republicans are floating Ryan as a possibly Hail Mary presidential candidate, proving that the Peter Principle is in full bloom at the RNC.

    Hi, LPlains! 🙂

Hi TOD fashionistas, I need help choosing my new glasses’ frames. Are there actually fashion-y glasses for 2016, and if there are where can I see a few? Choosing new glasses has always been a pain for me – exactly the reason I haven’t changed mine for a few years now – so please share a couple of up-to-date pics to assist me in my choice. Thank you.

      GA/GE vc.

I’m probably the last person to give fashion or popular culture advice, but that won’t stop me, LOL.

Don’t have a TV or watch movies, so my impressions are based on what I see online. Seems like sturdy frames are in now (think Rachel Maddow and folks I’ve seen in TV ads [do watch my soap opera, which includes video ads which may also air on TV] as trendy hipsters seem to favor these type of glasses.

      Remember Sasha at turkey pardoning?

Which at first glance looked to me just like some sunglasses I had just picked up at local Goodwill store a day or two before — but her frames are tortoiseshell, not plastic with gaudy decoration):

      • 32 vcprezofan2
        April 14, 2016 at 2:40 pm

😀 😀 I’d just like to see me ‘killing’ a pair like Sasha’s! Very unlikely I could carry it off with the same pizzazz!

    • April 13, 2016 at 8:15 pm

Hey, vc, I’m really into eyewear because I wear them all the time and I have good insurance. My doctor has a huge selection and I just bought three pairs: a regular pair that kind of look like Sasha’s (brand: SALT), reading and sun (brand: Anne et Valentin). But even with insurance, it was all very expensive because I have progressives and then there’s all the other add-ons.

A lot of people like Warby Parker frames. They are a whole lot cheaper but still good quality. I tried them and couldn’t find the right fit for my nose bridge and face but they have some very nice frames. If you can’t find a store near you, you can order some online and they’ll let you try them on for free and then you return them. Check them out and see what you think.

        GE vc and Meta.

Back when I followed @chrislhayes (i.e., before #Snowdenwald) I recall him tweeting about Warby Parker.

So vc, there’s hipster cred if that appeals to you.

And yes, it’s amazing how expensive eyewear (especially frames) can be.

Four eyes signing off now, LOL.

      • 35 vcprezofan2
        April 14, 2016 at 2:52 pm

Thanks, Meta. Don’t laugh, but in all the yeas I’ve worn glasses I have never once paid any attention to the brand of glasses! That probably explains why I get so many complaints! 😀 😀 😀 Maybe now is a good time to check those out. Though I do have insurance, one reason I’ve kept my current ‘progressives’ one for longer than the prescribed time is that it has a magnetic sunglass addition that I can clip on while driving. However, it really is time to change (*a-hem:cough-cough*- impending trip to WDC and all that stuff). 😉 Can’t return in the same glasses I wore to the Inauguaration, I don’t think. 😀 Will definitely check your Warby Parker link for ideas.

Talk about NOT being ready to be CiC. Whining already about unfair treatment, which is laughable. I wonder how he’d react to some Senator suggesting he be primaried for being a disappointment in his first term?

Never mind whether he’d be fit to answer the 3A.M. calls that will invariably come in about the Middle East, North Korea, Russia, Syria, and domestic terror. Can’t IMAGINE him handling it, or picking a competent team who could cover for him.

“Team Sanders now demanding Hillary win 59% of pledged delegates” “Bernie Sanders’ campaign manager, Jeff Weaver, suggested this past week that Sanders will contest the Democratic nomination at the convention in July even if Hillary wins the nomination before that date.

Talking to CNN, Weaver suggested that if Hillary doesn’t win the nomination with pledged delegates alone — the delegates you win in the state primaries and caucuses — Sanders will effectively declare a civil war at the Democrat convention this summer.

When asked about this plan to disrupt the Democratic convention, Sanders refused to repudiate the idea.”

      http://americablog.com/2016/04/team-sanders-now-demanding-hillary-win-59-pledged-delegates.html

Sanders is intent on destroying the Democratic Party!

        • April 14, 2016 at 6:57 pm

That’s what it seems like. He seems to believe this fairy tale he’s selling. And I think if you can’t assemble a competent campaign team, if you can’t explain what it is you’re going to do or how you’re going to do it, if you think you don’t need to build coalitions, if you only have the most minimal interest in and knowledge of so many facets of what presidents have to deal with, how are you not scared to death at the prospect of actually becoming president, instead of being just a gadfly. I guess I thought he had more detailed plans, he just didn’t think his supporters would be interested but it turns out he has no plans at all. He has bought land in Florida he’s been trying to sell to his supporters. Then I read all about Clinton’s unfavorables, and criticism of each little thing she does – blah! But I believe it will all come out right and even now I don’t believe we are as deeply divided as the GOP.

“REX is a hands-free robotic mobility device for rehabilitation. Self-supporting and secure, REX is designed for people with mobility impairments in rehabilitation centers and hospitals. Wheelchair users are at risk of developing numerous medical complications from extended periods of sitting. By enabling them to spend more time standing, walking and exercising, REX may offer significant health benefits. REX Bionics is working with physiotherapists to develop the practice of Robot-Assisted Physiotherapy (RAP). In a session of RAP, REX lifts patients from a sitting position into a robot-supported standing position, allowing them to take part in a set of supported walking and stretching exercises, designed by specialist physiotherapists. REX is rapidly adjustable for each user opening up the rehabilitative benefits to a wide range of people. REX also limits the burden on the therapists during manual handling and reduces the amount of help required to assist patients who are undergoing standing therapy.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Custom built for the individual, REX P opens up a world of social, recreational and work opportunities as your mobility is enhanced. REX P is completely self-supporting, giving you the freedom to use your hands, whilst remaining stable and balanced. We understand that, for wheelchair users, protecting the health of your shoulders is important, as is the ability to use your hands, which is why REX is designed to allow hands-free standing and walking.”

Jeff Merkley, my Senator just was on Rachel’s Show talking about his endorsement of Bernie. Bernie claims to have had 27,000 in the NYC rally beating Obama who had 24,000 in 2008. The estimate was from BS’ group. I hope they were wrong.

    • April 13, 2016 at 10:19 pm

Big crowds don’ t mean much. Voters mean a lot. A recent media survey of Bernie crowd in NYC showed one half of those interviewed weren’t even registered.

    • April 13, 2016 at 10:24 pm

I am sorry that Jeff Merkley caved. But I think it was easy for him, because the nomination is already decided and it will be even more clear by the time it gets to Oregon that it’s over. He will pay for it though when the GOP opponent in his next election runs Ads about his support for a marxist communist.

      • 77 Obama Grandmama
        April 13, 2016 at 11:06 pm

I was upset with Senator Merkley’s endorsement, but if NYC’s voting rules are so strict that two of Trump’s kids did not qualify to vote in the Primary maybe BS will not get too many votes from the Yuuuge crowds. After watching Lawrence’s Show I wish Hillary would take up the invitation to visit the housing area in NYC.

        • 78 99ts
          April 14, 2016 at 1:24 am

The voting rules are NOT strict. You simply have to be registered as a republican to vote in the republican primary. Sounds very logical to me.(and I don’t even live in the USA) Trump & Co know nothing about the voting/election process – this becoming obvious with every passing day. There have been MANY independents voting for Bernie & for Trump. be interesting to see the votes and the turnouts when the primary is for the party people only.

Well, I guess Lawrence O’Donnell stays up late (maybe to see what Donald Trump is late-tweeting), because he just “liked” a tweet I sent him. How’s that for a cheap thrill? Ha. I’d say his guest, young Bronx politician Ritchie Torres, is going places. Someone commented to Lawrence that it might be premature, but Torres looked like “a young PBO,” and Lawrence agreed. Nice!
