Bernie Sanders’ Tax Returns Reveal He Never Thought His Candidacy Would Get This Far
He forgot to pad out his charitable donations — failing to meet one of our famously cynical standards for politicians.

“Bernie Sanders is certainly an unconventional presidential candidate. But did he ever really intend to be a big-time presidential contender in the first place? Or was his effort always supposed to be a sort of protest candidacy, originally intended to lend light to key economic issues, that now has become a larger thing than he imagined? His recently released tax returns contain evidence that maybe this was the case.

And, no, I’m not talking about some of the newsier highlights, such as the fact that his reported income for the previous tax year was around $200,000, or the fact that he’s still facing pressure to release more tax returns. The Sanders campaign has promised to furnish additional returns, and Sanders said during Thursday’s debate he’s pretty confident they’ll be pretty dull. As The Washington Post reports, the campaign is “cautioning not to expect many new revelations.”

Well, they’re almost right. Because look at this:

On his Vermont tax return, Sanders made a total of $150 in voluntary contributions to support four causes: at-risk children, endangered wildlife, military veterans and the environment.

What? Only $150? Man, Bernie, do you even know how to run for office? When those tax returns come out, one of the things that is supposed to be revealed is your magnanimity. We’re supposed to swoon about what your taxes reveal about your heart. Real candidates know this is one of those dumb standards the press applies to them, and they plan accordingly. If Sanders had any intention of being a serious presidential candidate a year ago, he would have padded this out. Throw a couple grand at the at-risk kids. That sort of thing.”

I keep saying it over and over…I’ve never believed that he wants to be POTUS/CIC. He just wanted a platform…at this point I’m becoming unsure for what. I have no doubt that there will be more that will give evidence to his lack of intent. And I have no doubt that when all is said and done, numerous supporters and donors (especially the low dollar donors) will have been disillusioned and disappointed, and left feeling betrayed.

I didn’t watch the debate. Did the moderators bother to ask about the candidates plans to deal with climate change?

    • April 16, 2016 at 7:27 am

From what I remember, the “climate change” question was related more to fracking. Sanders, in his holier-than-thou way, proclaimed that he was against it…period. Then pointed to HRC, denouncing her for being in favor of it.

Hillary, in her way of providing details, explained that there was need to move away from coal/fossil fuels as a source for energy…not just in the US, but European countries and other countries as well At that time, she saw fracking as a bridge to move people away from coal/fossil fuel sources — make us less dependent — to more clean energy sources. She said that we were now crossing that bridge and have access to sources such as solar and wind energy. While she’s not at the point of saying that fracking is *never* acceptable, I remember from a previous debate where she itemized conditions where fracking could be permitted…the conditions being so detailed and numerous enough that the decision for fracking would be less likely.

Again, we see Bernie in his black or white mode…no gray area. He doesn’t take into consideration how or why things are done the way they are. He just decides it is or it isn’t…no incremental steps toward change is good enough. No consideration of who would be [negatively] impacted by any [drastic] changes is given. No thoughts regarding the cost. I doubt he gives *any* thought to alternative solutions.

This is not the mindset of a person that *I* would want to consider for POTUS. President Obama has made tremendous progress in improving the US’s relations with other countries. A Sanders’ presidency…just as with a GOP president … would wipe out much — if not all — of the progress in that regard.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has condemned the policies of US Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump, equating them to bigotry.

Zeid Raad al-Hussein did not mention Mr Trump by name, but he singled out the businessman’s support of torture and his policies towards Muslims.

“Bigotry is not proof of strong leadership,” Mr Hussein said.

The commissioner also criticised a plan by rival candidate Ted Cruz to conduct surveillance on Muslim neighbourhoods.

“Hate speech, incitement and marginalisation of the ‘other’ are not a tittering form of entertainment, or a respectable vehicle for political profit,” Mr Hussein told an audience in Cleveland, Ohio.

He added: “A front-running candidate to be president of this country declared, just a few months ago, his enthusiastic support for torture (…) inflicting intolerable pain on people, in order to force them to deliver or invent information that they may not have.”

What a week. TGIF!!! I want this primary to be over. I am tired of Bernie and his supporters, I have listened to Leslie Marshall show and the Norman Goldman shows today (just because I can at my work this afternoon) and some of the folks are so delusional in their hatred for Hillary and the Democratic Party. I am a proud Democrat but I know our party is far from perfect but right now we can’t tear something down without something to fill the space and not worry about the Repubs taking over. All these Bernie supporters really don’t care about how government runs and how it affects everyone. They only care about their little purity. This one lady even said that Obama was a Democratic corporate whore. I am threw my phone against the wall. I don’t know if I can keep from really telling a Bernie supporter just what I think of their candidate. Rant over. Now to go home have have a drink.

Me too. He would have been the perfect president for this time. Competent, experienced, honest, passionate, and charismatic. And for the segment of the population is afraid of change Joe would have been the reassuring father figure they crave.

Hillary is very competent, hard working, and has the stamina and the strength to face the ugliness thrown at her by the GOP.

But I would have preferred Joe Biden. He’s tough too. And I just love his personality.

while bs is preaching ‘morality’, the actual vatican dood is doing this.

Pope Francis is due to visit the Greek island of Lesbos to show support for refugees trying to reach Europe.

He will visit a camp where more than 3,000 people awaiting either asylum or deportation to Turkey are being held

Lesbos has been the main entry point for many among about a million people who entered Europe over the past year.

Thousands are now stuck on the island after last month’s controversial deal between Europe and Turkey to try to stem the flow.

The Vatican insists the pontiff’s five-hour visit is purely humanitarian and religious in nature and should not be seen as a criticism of the deportations.

I thought I’d give it a go. But some sparkly new Bernie supporter responded to my tweet about “trying to encourage a little fairness among supporters. We Dems have an election to win in November!” She wrote something like Bernie and his supporters go with facts, and Hillary and her supporters can’t accept the truth about her and lie about Bernie and yada yada yada – some big old overreaching blanket statement like that.

I think she thought I was a die-hard Bernie supporter, rather than somebody trying to suggest cooler heads might prevail. So I sent her this message, and then I blocked the little darling.

” I’ve got no response to that. My comment was about ‘fairness’ across the board. And you just insulted millions of Democrats.”

    It’s-getting-old.

    • April 15, 2016 at 11:55 pm

Standing O, Booms. There really is no reasoning with Bernie’s supporters. He and his surrogates have been feeding them a lot of nasty smears for a long time and they’re not about to let go of that bone. They are snarly and weird, to say the least.

Thanks. I didn’t follow the antics of the Ron Paul supporters of yore, but I’m thinking they acted the same way (and he’s barely a human being, in my book). However, he wasn’t in the same electoral position as Bernie, so this is worse! Some of the younger ones are going to walk away thinking people like Sarandon are big-time role models. Ugh.

      …. in April. 😦

I keep thinking BS will just back away, kind of like the lower rung rethugs did, when it was obvious there was no effing way to win. Or if not, then he’d continue on to ensure there is some kind of press interest in the Dem race. That is happening, but all the interest is in him. Political/news websites all focus on Trump, Cruz, and Sanders. Maybe an occasional reference to HRC, but only if there’s something they can spin negatively. How did so many Dems go off the rails? Tired just thinking of the work to haul them back into reality, and reasoned voting.

This is the media susanne – their interest is in having a white man – any white man in the discussion. Hillary has watched for years as the media has attacked PBO and she sees them doing it to her. Like the President – she ignores it – which is the ONLY way to treat the US political media. They want reality TV, not a President.

        • April 16, 2016 at 4:27 am

Honestly. that’s what i think too. I can see them all saying that ‘The great experiment is over. It was a failure. Lets get back to normal.’ Hurts my heart to see such a good man as PBO and a more than caring competent woman like HRC trashed the way they have been.

It does break my heart to see that the dems couldn’t come to the party & elect a congress to implement the President’s agenda – but what an amazing man – he did what he could to create consensus & when the GOP and the media refused – he carried on with his plans. The hatred by the GOP for health care didn’t stop him getting it done. I hope Hillary will do the same – and use her first years like there is no tomorrow when she will probably have a senate majority – if not the house.

The daughter-in-law that is the princess that gets what she wants when she wants it with her own family declared almost as soon as Bernie jumped into the race that she feels the Bern. She regularly posts on FB anything and everything about how great he is. My son is the one that keeps in touch with me not his wife. I do not discuss politics with them as I do not want my son to have to deal with her wrath. Never thought I would dislike anyone that married one of my kids. She has a terrible temper if she does not get what she wants or you disagree with her. She is always right. No matter what. Facts mean nothing to her it is always a decision based on emotion. I am thinking she may be a good representative of Bernie’s supporters.

Here’s what I know, or think I know.

    1. Bill needs to quit talking about Bernie or Hillary or the 1990s. Or anything else. It’s not helping.
    2. Pardon my French and call me crazy, but I don’t give a damn about Hillary’s transcripts and I don’t give a flying fuck about Bernie’s tax returns.
    3. I think it was nice that Bernie got to speak in Rome, as an American, about important humanitarian topics. The world didn’t end. Nobody will remember what he said by Monday, anyway, because he won’t be talking about it, since “the crowds” weren’t “yuge.”
    4. Loved the fact that Hillary stopped by and met a lot of nice people who live in public housing accommodations in New York today, after being urged to do so. Looked like an eye-opener for her.
    5. Glad Rachel’s still mentioning Flint.
    6. John Kasich shouldn’t be around women, young or old, much less talk to them or about them. I’m beginning to wonder if his wife was a mail-order bride (before Skype), or he won her in a lotto, because surely she didn’t “see” him before they wed. Not that I care about this, either, but he sure looks like he married up, because he’s a damn bozo.
    7. Ted Cruz acts ultra weird, every day. Maybe to hide his evil parts.
    8. I don’t believe I’ve allowed myself to listen to Trump’s voice in a couple of days. And it’s been grand.

Goodnight, TODville – sleep well when you get there!
