One question, who the hell is that top for? Sasha or Malia Obama.

        • May 10, 2016 at 6:19 pm

Oh darn, I was so hoping Coach Williams and the North Carolina Tarheels was going to win the men championship, so they would be back at the WH before POTUS leave. 2009 POTUS pick them to win it all and they did.Coach Williams is another coach who like and respect POTUS. Not like that sorry ass Bobby Knight who endorse Trump.

I’m giving up on Manchester United. They just got beat by a Ham. 😦

FT: WEST HAM 3 UNITED 2
It’s all over. The Reds suffer defeat in dramatic fashion, having come from behind to lead in the second half. Anthony Martial got both of United’s goals.

Former PA Senate candidate had a meeting today with a number of Dems to thank us for our support and talk about the inside politics that had led to his defeat. There were many Bernie supporters in the group and someone said they were tempted to let the Republicans win so people could see how bad it could get. I had to say that when things get “bad,” it’s those who can least handle it who suffer the most. What happens to the people who need the healthcare they get under Obamacare to stay alive. What happens to 11 million immigrants and the Dreamers who lives will be destroyed; what happens to young people who’ll be recruited for senseless wars; or the disabled who rely on government support. It’s so easy to talk about destroying the ‘system,’ but very hard to live with the consequences. One man had the decency to say that I was right, so that was something.

Oh JackieG, your post was just what I needed to see. I just got home from meeting a friend for lunch who was voicing the same opinion as those people at your meeting, telling me, “Maybe electing Trump is what people need in order to wake up.”

This woman is not far left. She is not a BS supporter as far as I know. She is a black woman who is somewhat of a conservative Dem, very anti-taxes, a bit anti-immigrant. She loves President Obama but has pretty much missed the miracle and awesomeness of his presidency simply because she chooses to be uninformed. She is intelligent, an executive with a major company, but only pays just enough attention to policy to complain, not to find out how shit actually works, and who’s in charge of what. She has hated HRC since she was the First Lady and said sees no difference between HRC and Trump (!!??!)

I told her I will not let PBO’s legacy and accomplishments be followed up by Donald Trump. I told her maybe she can ride out everything going to sh*t but I will lose my healthcare. She replied, “Well, it would take awhile for them to get rid of it; I mean it took awhile for them to make it a law, right?” !!!?!!

I implored her to listen to PBO’s recent speech to the Howard graduates, but I just think she is beyond hope. I mean, she’s a grown woman and I’ve gone round and round with her about this stuff before, but I kind of lost it this time. Donald Trump! for crying out loud!

I got on TOD the minute I came home, for a dose of sanity and here was your post. Just wanted you to know it helped 🙂

The truly maddening thing, MS, is how utterly uninformed intelligent people are. They just don’t bother to get beneath the surface reporting of the media and just accept negative judgments about PBO and HRC without questioning. Some people just can’t see beyond their own noises. We just have to hope they don’t constitute the majority.

    • May 10, 2016 at 7:16 pm

We already saw how very bad it can get when George W Bush ran this country into the ground in every single way imaginable. It’s not enough that people died, lost their jobs, their homes, their savings, schools rotted, ISIS began, Big Pharma ripped off seniors, on and on and on. GEEZE, when are people going to wake up and do the emotional work to be a responsible voter!!

      • 14 MadameSoph
        May 10, 2016 at 7:33 pm

        Jackie, Meta,
I don’t know if the majority of people ever will do the work. It’s up to the Obama Coalition to save their asses once again. When we come out in record numbers, we make up for the “gut feeling” voters and the lazy voters. Of course, there are not enough of us to make up for the low mid-term and local turnouts, but in the General, when most people will vote sane, us coming out strong puts the best candidate over the top.

My friend was saying how “people don’t have time to pay attention; their lives are too busy.” But, I know that she watches Netflix before bed. I peruse TOD. We’re all busy; but there is information out there if one wants it. It is a choice to remain uninformed. If she was up on policy and just disagreed with me, I would be bummed out, but not as frustrated with her. I told her, “If you don’t have time to be up on every issue, just pick one or two that you are passionate about and inform yourself about and work on that.” But, I know it’s useless to try to change some people.

My cousin and I were discussing how we don’t understand how people could be “angry” or “hopeless” after the past 8 years. I mean, the system has been “rigged’ since I can remember, but the miracle of PBO’s Presidency is that he has shown us just how much amazing change can be accomplished IN SPITE OF the system being rigged! I have more hope now than ever!

My cousin told me that she decided that, if other people refused to be happy, she would just have to be happy for everyone. I decided to do the same. FORWARD! 🙂

        • May 10, 2016 at 7:49 pm

          FORWARD, indeed.

          GE Madame Soph.

It’s sometimes best to give politics a rest with a friend, especially if that person thinks voting for Trump (!) is a good idea.

But between now and when PBO and #OurManJoe hit the campaign trail, you could drop a crumb of JackieG’s truth in your friend’s path, and mention if Trump were elected, it would upend our relationships with every. single. country on earth.

Our stable financial system would be a thing of the past, and companies will panic and layoffs of “unnecessary personnel” will devastate entire swathes of the US.

I don’t know what it’s like where she lives, but her in exurban Ventura County, many stores and car dealerships closed after 2008 financial freefall. Now we’ve basically got high end and discount stores — the mid-level stores have pretty much closed (except for Kohls and Target). My Nissan dealership left town, replaced by RollsRoyce-Bentley.

That’s just the financial aspect of a Trump presidency. He’s such an egomaniac, who knows what would trigger more maiming and death of young servicemen and women?

My prediction is that you won’t have to be “Debbie Downer” with your friend once PBO and @VP start campaigning — just ask to view an event or two. 🙂

          One final word about Trump:

            Arapaho,
I tried all of those arguments on her and she wouldn’t budge. She’s proud that she hasn’t wavered in her hate for HRC, telling me, “At least I’m consistent.”

I just remembered that she is a HUGE Shonda Rhimes, Kerry Washington and Scandal fan. I got her a signed copy of “Year of Yes” and she loved it. If anything will sway her, it will be this YouTube. Think I’ll send it later, when the General gets closer 🙂

This election year is so depressing and frightening.

@knx1070 radio aired a report that said most of the GOP voters tonight actually believe Trump will win in Nov.

It seems many supporters are drawn to Trump because he is a celebrity. Non-stop media coverage validates and encourages people to think they’ve made the right choice by voting for Trump.

To hell with the global chaos and potential wars his belligerent foreign policy might bring. (Can you imagine John Boulton as Secretary of State or Chris “the bully” Christie as VP?)

I see so many people now who seem to be so much like him — well-fed, loud and obnoxious, and Trump is the brand they want to be associated with Americans by the international community.

              It’s so humiliating and self-defeating. #EndOfTheAmericanCentury

I wonder IF those people thinking we need Trump inorder for people to see how bad it can get really understand how close we were after GW left office of losing it all? When Trump says things like instead of paying our bills we will negotiate a better deal like he did with all his bankruptcies or we will just print more money there are people that think it will be no big deal including my Architect Brother. He is intelligent, but bonkers! He thinks Trump will not do what he said he would. I unfollowed my Brother on Facebook since I am in skilled care recuperating after total knee replacement and I do not need the stress of seeing all the Trump articles he endorses. He has The Donald, Melania and one of the Trump sons on his Like page. Yuck!

Steve Weinstein is right, PF. “Conservative” means white male. Hillary won West Virginia in 2008 because she was white and Barack Obama was not. Now they’d rather have a white male than a woman. Tells you everything you need to know.

Yep! I have had my eyes opened to a few (self-identified liberal) people here that I know supported HRC in 2008 and are for “some reason” supporting BS in 2016. In what political world does that make sense unless it was “not the black guy” in 2008 and now it’s “not the woman” or “not the woman who hangs out with the black guy” in 2016. People eventually reveal themselves.

WOW – I’m stunned and thrilled. Up here in Portland, people who prefer Hillary must be awfully quiet about their support. We had a good turnout last week to hear Bill speak for her, but it was nothing like the Bernie Bro rallies.

        Judith,
That’s how I am and I’m guessing a lot of HRC voters are here as well. I don’t have a sticker on my car because I don’t want it keyed. I will vote though, for damn sure!

I almost went to the East LA College Rally that got descended on by those Tea Party type BernieBros that were yelling obscenities and making supporters walk past them as they screamed. I read that one ripped a signed HRC sign out of a child’s hands. I just watched the BBC Doc on the President’s Healthcare Fight and they showed the Tea Party and they were acting exactly the same as the “protestors” at the recent HRC rally here. Now I’m kind of glad I didn’t go, although I would have loved to be this woman:

Hillary Clinton won the Nebraska Democratic primary on Tuesday, but she’s not getting any delegates out of it.

The Associated Press called the race in favor of Clinton, whose victory amounts to mere expression of preference but could serve as a boost to the Democratic front-runner’s argument that she is a more electable candidate in open contests, particularly as she looks to pivot to the general election against presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

The candidates’ delegates to the Democratic National Convention were awarded in the state’s March 5 caucus.

Bernie Sanders won the caucuses by 15 percentage points, receiving 15 delegates to Clinton’s 10.

Prejudice is not a storm that crashes and passes. It is a weed that must constantly be cut back, lest it take over. Remembering these events requires remembering that they were committed by people, and they started with something that seems so harmless — words. We are not unique by virtue of being American. Nor are we immune. Our history shows that we are just as susceptible to hatred and discrimination as any other. And when we have allowed it to flourish, we have allowed it to deny millions of others their humanity.
