How I wish Trump were a figure in a tv comedy so it would all be over in an hour. The idea of enduring his idiocy for another six months makes me ill and the thought that this creature might, by some twist of fate, become president freezes my blood.

I think that secretly Republicans can’t wait for President Obama to go after Donald Trump. I think they want to see Trump utterly destroyed.

And the important thing, Don, is that we all watch carefully what PBO does and model his approach as we interact with voters. President Obama will not do nasty, but he will make his point about DT’s unfitness in a way that will devastate him. When it comes to PBO, I always say, “Watch and learn.”

The German parliament has approved a resolution declaring that the mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks during World War One was a “genocide”.

Armenians say up to 1.5 million of their people died in the atrocities of 1915. Turkey says the toll was much lower and rejects the term “genocide”.

The timing is awkward, as the EU needs Turkey to help stem the migrant influx.

Turkish president Recip Tayyip Erdogan said the resolution risked harming ties between the countries.

    /

More than 20 nations, including France and Russia, as well as Pope Francis, have recognised the 1915 killings as genocide.

Turkey denies that there was a systematic campaign to slaughter Christian Armenians as an ethnic group during WWI. It also points out that many Turkish civilians died in the turmoil during the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.

Ms Merkel was not in the Bundestag (lower house) for the vote. Her Christian Democrats (CDU), their coalition partners the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens all supported the resolution, and the vote in favour was overwhelming.

German MPs came under pressure from Turks in the run-up to the vote, including threatening and abusive e-mails, German ARD news reports.

There will never be good “timing” in condemning genocide, since the offending country will always have some card to draw that gives people pause. But the Armenians have waited a long time for this kind of international condemnation and it’s a good thing to have it stated. My son has a lot of Armenian American friends in CA and this kind of recognition is a big deal for them.

Jer, I hope that Harry Reid and Dick Schumer have an “or else” waiting in case Sanders doesn’t give up and continues to undermine HRC. There will need to be some private conversations after next week that delivers the good to Sanders–concede and support the Dem nominee or know what life in hell is like when you return to the Senate. Also, Bernie is going to be in over his head in campaign debt and is going to need Dem party support. I hope he has the brains to see that.

  14. June 2, 2016 at 9:07 am

    Our President yesterday:

So, look, here’s my main point: The primary story that Republicans have been telling about the economy is not supported by the facts. It’s just not. They repeat it a lot – but it’s not supported by the facts. But they say it anyway. Now, why is that? It’s because it has worked to get them votes, at least at the congressional level.

Because – and here, look, I’m just being blunt with you – by telling hardworking, middle-class families that the reason they’re getting squeezed is because of some moochers at the bottom of the income ladder, because of minorities, or because of immigrants, or because of public employees, or because of feminists – because of poor folks who aren’t willing to work, they’ve been able to promote policies that protect powerful special interests and those who are at the very top of the economic pyramid. That’s just the truth.

I hope you don’t mind me being blunt about this, but I’ve been listening to this stuff for a while now. And I’m concerned when I watch the direction of our politics. I mean, we have been hearing this story for decades. Tales about welfare queens, talking about takers, talking about the “47 percent.” It’s the story that is broadcast every day on some cable news stations, on right-wing radio, it’s pumped into cars, and bars, and VFW halls all across America, and right here in Elkhart.

And if you’re hearing that story all the time, you start believing it. It’s no wonder people think big government is the problem. No wonder public support for unions is so low. No wonder that people think that the deficit has gone up under my presidency when it’s actually gone down. No wonder that – they did a survey, a lot of white Americans think reverse discrimination is as big a problem as discrimination against minorities, even though black unemployment is twice as high as white unemployment. And the typical Hispanic woman makes 55 cents for every dollar a white man earns, and there are only a handful of women running Fortune 500 companies.
But that’s the story that’s been told. And I’m here to say, Elkhart, seven and a half years since I first came here, we’ve got to challenge the assumptions behind this economic story. And the reason is it has ended up dividing Americans who actually have common economic interests and should be working together for a better deal from the people who serve them. And it’s made people cynical about government, and it’s kept working families from pushing our political system to actually address our economic challenges in a realistic way. Families of all races, and all backgrounds, deserve higher wages. Families of all races, and all backgrounds, deserve quality health care and decent retirement savings. Every child in this country deserves an education that lets them dream bigger than the circumstances in which they’re born.

You know, look, in today’s economy, we can’t put up walls around America. We’re not going to round up 11 million people. We’re not going to put technology back in the box. We’re not going to rip away hard-earned rights of women and minorities and Americans with disabilities so that they’re able to more fairly and fully participate in the workplace. These are permanent fixtures in our economy. And rolling them back will not help folks in Elkhart or anyplace else.

And if we’re going to transform our politics so that they’re actually responsive to working families and are actually growing the middle class, then we’ve got to stop pitting working Americans against one another. We’re going to have to come together and choose a vision of America where everybody gets a fair shot, and everybody does their fair share, and everybody plays by the same set of rules. And that’s the vision that made progress possible over these last seven years. And that’s what’s going to lead us forward now.

Chris Matthews earned a paycheck yesterday, I see:)

Matthews: You just said that Trump is hiding something, by not releasing his tax returns. What is your candidate hiding?

Weaver: I — my — my candidate is not hiding anything.

Matthews: But then why doesn’t he release his tax returns?

Weaver: He has released some —

Matthews: He’s released one year, of fourteen, that’s it.

Weaver: — and he has House and Senate ethics reports —

Matthews: Yeah, but why doesn’t he release his tax returns? You just said, a minute ago, that a politician is running for President, that doesn’t release his tax returns, has something to hide —

Weaver: But that’s Donald Trump! You asked about Donald Trump, Chris!

Matthews: I asked you, why wouldn’t a politician release his tax returns…

Weaver: That’s not a hypothetical, you said why isn’t Donald Trump revealing his tax returns?!?

Matthews: Okay, fine. You said that Donald Trump would not release his tax returns because he was obviously trying to hide something. What is Senator Sanders hiding?

Weaver: He’s hiding nothing. And I think — if you talk to anybody in the media — who saw those tax returns in 2014 — everybody who thought there was gonna be some big thing in there, and you know what? Zero!

Matthews: I’m just asking the question, live question, right now: You just went after Trump, for not releasing his returns. Why doesn’t your guy do it?

Weaver: Yes, and that — because Trump is a flim-flam artist, and a fraud! We’ve seen that, in his university, and —

Matthews: Why don’t you address yourself to the question I just asked? Why doesn’t your guy release the returns? Give me an answer!

    Weaver: Well, he will.

    Matthews: Oh, he will?

Weaver: Sure! He said he will!

Matthews: Senator Sanders will release his returns during the course of this campaign?

    Weaver: He said he will…

    Matthews: Before the convention.

Weaver: He said he would, yeah.

Matthews: Well, can you give me a date?

Weaver: I’ll be happy to get you a date, Chris…

Nice, but too little, too late. No one flipping CARES anymore! BS needs to go home and take a nap or something….the rest of us have long moved on.

The company he keeps… SS ought to pay this guy a visit

    http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/06/trump-delegates-patriot-movement-militias

Last December, Donald Trump’s presidential campaign approved David Riden to be a delegate candidate on the Tennessee ballot, and when the state held its primary in March, voters selected Riden to go to the Republican National Convention. When Riden represents Trump there in July, it will not be his first time as a delegate to a political gathering. Seven years ago in Illinois he attended the so-called “Continental Congress of 2009,” where he and other delegates put forth “Articles of Freedom” that called for abolishing all federal firearms laws, replacing the Department of Homeland Security with citizen militias, and, if necessary, launching an insurrection against the federal government.

Riden explains that his views today go even further than those of the Continental Congress of 2009—his involvement in which he says he explicitly disclosed to the Trump campaign when he applied to be a delegate. Riden told Mother Jones in an interview that US leaders who violate the Constitution may have to be done away with: “The polite word is ‘eliminated,'” he said. “The harsh word is ‘killed.'”

Riden said he keeps in contact with a militia group based in Tennessee, though he is not a militia member himself. He said all three branches of the US government are “way off away from the Constitution right now.” Americans may need to attack with assault weapons and bombs in the nation’s capital and elsewhere, he said:

Good morning TODvlle. I am finding how long it takes to get thru the back posts when you are gone for 6 days. The posts of PBO’s trips to Vietnam and Japan were so inspiring. The reaction of the ordinary people to PBO was wonderful. This man will be our Ambassador to the World for the rest of his life. The people who want him on the Supreme Court are limiting him. While he would do an amazing job it is way to limiting for him.

I also wanted to suggest a book of TOD’s posts of PBO’s foreign trips. I do believe this is the only place where you could see the full impact of those trips. No media covered it the way our Chips and Nerdy Wonka have. I also think this blog should be archived at the Presidential Library. I know we will talk about this at our DC meet up in 2 weeks. I don’t want to loose contact with all the people here. We know PBO will continue in some great work that we can follow and be a part of. We have time to figure this out. I am not ready to end.

Hi Dudette. It never fails to fill me with pride with I see women graduating from our service academies. This is something I would never have imagined would happen in my lifetime. The academies were male bastions and women were only allowed on campus as ‘dates’ or tourists. You start saying things for the cameras, based on how you think you’re coming across, to your “followers.” She’s the female version of Michael Moore, in my opinion. A Question of Racism
What’s behind the vitriol in the opposition to Obama?
    By Michael A. Fletcher

    ……………….

    The First Black President

A series exploring the cultural impact of Obama’s White House

    “You lie!”

The words cut through the air as President Obama, not eight months into his first term, laid out his signature health care proposal in a prime-time speech to a joint session of Congress.

The outburst by South Carolina Republican Rep. Joe Wilson, challenging the president’s factual assertion that the health care law would not extend coverage to illegal immigrants, drew audible gasps in the room and withering stares from Obama as well as Vice President Joe Biden and then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who were sitting behind the president on the rostrum.

It’s unprecedented for a president addressing Congress to be heckled like a referee at a summer league basketball game. Not surprisingly, the incident still rankles Obama supporters, including some of his closest confidants.

“Somebody should have smacked his a–,” former Attorney General Eric Holder said of Wilson in an interview. “They should have . . . told him to sit the f— down.”

Wilson apologized and was formally rebuked by Congress. Still, for many the incident stands as a prime example of how the unwritten rules dictating public respect for the nation’s chief executive and his family have shifted for the worse since the nation’s first black president took office. Instances of obstruction, scorn and outright insult have mounted over his seven-year tenure.

“There is a unique feeling of fear — hatred is too strong a word — but a feeling of anger, dissatisfaction with this president,” Holder said.

All of which raises a disturbing question: Is racism to blame?

The continuous challenges to the president’s legitimacy and authority offer a troubling counterpoint to the shimmering achievement his election and re-election represent for a nation founded on both the dream of equality and the reality of white supremacy. They evoke a shameful history, when whites routinely addressed blacks by their first names and adult men were called “boy” and otherwise diminished without a second thought, no matter their age or standing.

Any one or two or three of the slights to Obama could be dismissed as insignificant one-offs, the last gasps of a dying order that relegated people of color to a lesser place.
