Some essential and really cool environmental advances of late:

CROWN-OF-THORNS Starfish are the zombies of the sea. They won’t die even if you cut them in half. To kill one, you must dismember it completely—or inject it with poisonous (to them) bile salts. Instead of brains, these zombies munch coral, and off the coast of Australia, infestations of the beasts are damaging the Great Barrier Reef at an alarming rate. Enter COTSbot. In development since late 2014, the underwater droid identifies and assassinates the ravenous stars—autonomously. Unlike a human diver, the COTSbot can work safely in rough seas for eight hours at a time and doesn’t ask for a paycheck. The machine uses an acoustic sensor to navigate the reef and a camera to identify its prey from afar with 99 percent accuracy. “Very few underwater robots do onboard image processing,” says Matthew Dunbabin, the bot’s inventor and principal research fellow at the Institute for Future Environments at Queensland University of Technology. “It processes information in real time and takes action.” When it moves in for the kill, five thrusters enable the bot to hover in place as it injects the poison through a vision-guided articulating arm. These zombies don’t stand a chance.”

“Lovers of beer and marine life rejoice. A Florida microbrewery, a New York–based advertising agency, and a Mexico-based biodegradables company have teamed up to make six-pack rings that don’t strangle and choke marine creatures. Most of us are familiar with the horrifying photos of bird carcasses stuffed with the indigestible plastics they’ve eaten over a lifetime, or turtles squeezed into the tiny openings of six-pack rings. These aren’t just one-off cases: Scientists estimate that as much as 12.7 million metric tons of plastic waste found its way into the ocean in 2010 alone, and that 90 percent of seabirds eat the stuff. “The plastic problem is pervasive throughout our marine environment,” says Myra Finkelstein, a wildlife toxicologist at the University of California–Santa Cruz. “An alarming proportion of sea birds ingest plastic.”

But the folks at Saltwater Brewery in Delray Beach, Florida, think they’ve found a way to reduce their plastic footprint. Three months ago, they were approached by the ad agency We Believers about developing biodegradable six-pack rings. They then connected with Mexico-based biodegradables manufacturer Entelequia Inc., and at first thought they’d try kelp. Eventually, though, they settled on something that breweries have an abundance of: spent grain. Normally, says Chris Gove—a co-founder of Saltwater Brewery—brewers either give the leftover solid food waste to farmers, or they have to pay to dump it. But now, working with We Believers and Entelequia, they’ve developed a way to shape this food waste into six-pack rings, which they say biodegrade over two to three months. Of course, that doesn’t mean people should go lobbing these rings over the sides of their boats—biodegradable or not, “pack-in, pack-out” is still a good mantra to follow….continued”

Can’t remember who recently wrote the story that most GOP candidates for President are in it for name recognition and they go on to become media pundits – seems campaign staff are similar. MSNBC took on McCain’s senior staff, guess CNN is just wanting to do the same thing.

I’m just gonna put this out here. There is lots of talk about Tim Kaine being in the running for VP. I sure hope Hillary DOES NOT pick him. I remember when PBO picked him for Dem Chairman and he wasn’t very good IMO. He’s a bright guy but he would add nothing IMO to her campaign. I think Tom Perez would be a great pick. He has an impeccable resume and checks all the boxes as far as I’m concern. In addition, he would definitely rally the Latino community. Elizabeth Warren is a wonderful attack force on Donald but I just don’t see those misogynist Democrats (and yes we have many of them in our party) in Ohio, PA and Michigan voting for two women. I think Warren will be a force in a Democratic majority Senate and she would push Hillary to do the right thing every single day. She can also rally some of those disgruntled Sanders voters to GOTV for Hillary. I think she can do more for us at this time by staying in the Senate. Although I think she and Hillary would make a great one-two punch on Donald I’m just not sure that this country is ready to turn over all of the power seats to women just yet. Sad, I know! Julian Castro I would be okay with although I think his resume is a little thin but I feel he would be an okay pick. He is young and charismatic and could rally many of the youth to vote.

So glad you spoke up about Tim Kaine, because I couldn’t quite recall why I’ve never been too thrilled with him. He smiles a lot, but there doesn’t seem to be any there there. And you reminded me of the Dem Chair disappointment(s). I’m with you on Tom Perez – he’s the genuine article, IMO.

    • 68 MadameSoph
      June 23, 2016 at 9:13 pm

Donna, Tom Perez is my fave too. I was thinking that the only thing he’s missing is foreign policy cred, but do any of the possible pics being floated have FP experience? Tim Kaine doesn’t hold any appeal for me (other than the fact that he’s the only one of the Senators who would have a Dem Gov filling his post) and Julian seems too young/green still. I know people love Warren being the attack dog and all, but she’s not a fave of mine. I am very grateful for the CFPB. Still, she seems like, Sanders, Wiener and so many who were great at shouting and railing against, but very one-issued and self-promoting.

Ultimately, it’s HRC who has to work with the person. I remember when PBO picked Joe Biden, I felt like it “balanced the ticket” so to speak, but I was kind of “meh” on Joe himself. But they turned out to be a wonderful team and I ended up loving Joe as VP. I was one of the “Ridin with Biden” folks before he declined to run.

I am prepared to not be in love with her VP pick, but if it’s Tom Perez, (as we say in California) I’ll be totally stoked!

      June 23, 2016 at 9:16 pm

Donna, I agree with you on all points. Kaine has virtually zero charisma and was pretty much a do nothing at the DNC. I’m hoping the talk about him is a false flag. As I’ve stated before, EW is much better placed in the Senate. Hillary does not have to be pushed to the left and I don’t think she should have a running mate who would overshadow her in any way. Plus there are many Latino men who could not deal with both female President and VP candidates. I lean toward Julian Castro because he represents the future and would help to galvanize Latinos. I have to have faith that HRC will do the right thing. She’s got some very savvy advisors and she knows how the political world works. We’ll see.

Most early evenings, I seem to tune in to MSNBC right before Hardball. The show that precedes it is With All Due Respect. Actually, those dudes have no respect for anyone but themselves and their “brilliant ideas.” So I mute the last few minutes of it. Funny how it changes your perspective. With no sound, you can study (as if) the chunky, bloviating white patriarchal males, all with fake smiles, each of whom is more repulsive than the next. Now, I love men, white males included, as a group – but these guys are the type that remind you of hitting up a costume shop around Halloween, finding masks with their faces on them. It borders on the occult. OMG. Did I mention repulsive?

FREDDIE GRAY JOINS THE LIST OF MURDERED BLACK PEOPLE WHO NO ONE ACTUALLY MURDERED, APPARENTLY
    Damon Young, 6/23/16

Officer Caesar Goodson, the driver of the police van where Freddie Gray was intentionally given a “rough ride” — an act that severed his spinal cord, placed him in a coma, and killed him — was found not guilty on each of the charges (second degree “depraved heart” murder, three different counts of manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment, and misconduct in office) stemming from Gray’s death. He is the third officer charged in Gray’s death to escape conviction. Three more still await trial, but convictions for any of them seem extremely unlikely now.

Naturally, this series of events leads you to believe that no one actually killed Freddie Gray. Which, of course, seems preposterous. After all, his spinal cord was severed, he was placed in a coma, and he did die as a result of the injuries he received while in that van. Someone or a group of someones must’ve done this to him. But its only preposterous if you fail to realize that it’s not without precedent. American history is full of instances of Black people 1) getting murdered, 2) having their murderers be known to the public, and 3) having those murders carried out in public with no legal consequence for the crime. Sometimes it’s done by officers of the law. Sometimes it’s done by neighborhood watchmen. Sometimes it’s done by crowds of people. And sometimes — like with the castration, burning, flaying, and lynching of Jesse Washington — the murder becomes a festive and communal event, complete with food, music, souvenirs, and commemorative postcards.

Of course, if you’re no one; if you’re a thing that exists but doesn’t actually matter — which is how these dead Black people were regarded by their killers — no one can murder you.

ABIGAIL FISHER, THE OSCAR MAYER TURKEY BACON OF AVERAGE WHITE WOMEN, LOSES
    Damon Young, 6/23/16

    ……………………………………………………….

This decision is a major blow to 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier-ass White people who wish to be treated like Maseratis. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with being a White person. (Hi White people reading this!) Or even being an average White person. Most people — Black, White, Kappa, etc — are average people. Because math. But there is something particularly and specifically American wrong with reflexively assuming that the reason why your second Wednesday in March-ass ass was passed over was because you happen to be a White woman. And then being so hurt by this fabricated wrong that you take your regifted bottle of three-year-old Almaden Heritage-ass ass to the Supreme Court.

Watching the wonderful House protest, and thinking about it, it seems to me that this protest was the Democrats’ declaration of independence: independence of fear of the NRA, independence of fear of the Republicans, independence from corporate lobbyists, independence to do what they know they should do. I’ve read some comments that intimate that this is a futile gesture, that it will accomplish nothing. What I can say is that these writers do NOT know John Lewis.

He was TRAINED for this, he’s taken the knocks, he knows how to organize for the long view…..another Sarah Palin disparaged “community organizer” who knows exactly what he is doing. I firmly believe this is but the first volley in a long term strategy, beautifully organized and presented, and will bring about eventual gun reform. He has created a bandwagon that everyone is going to want to join. He knew exactly what he was doing. These people consistently forget what he and his people did in the 60s, they forget that sit-ins brought about an end to the Viet Nam War……

    This is not over.

    • 83 jackiegrumbacher
      June 23, 2016 at 9:24 pm

Carolyn, I agree with you. I feel that something fundamental changed yesterday and you absolutely nailed it with the idea that it was a declaration of independence from fear. We are not the same country we were a year ago because greater numbers of people are now seeing behind the mask of hypocrisy and fear mongering on the gun issue and are saying, “enough!”

    • June 23, 2016 at 11:49 pm

I understand that there were exit polls, but they weren’t standardized. Different regions were polled separately and people may have been asked different questions. That’s why they wouldn’t be accurate.

    • June 23, 2016 at 11:54 pm

Beautifully expressed, Carolyn (Hi!!) As he said, they tried three times before they successfully crossed Edmund Pettus Bridge. First the filibuster, then the sit-in”: they are forcing the GOP to reject these perfectly sensible, commonly supported regulations on the record. They are showing the difference between the parties (they are NOT the same). They are setting up for the November elections where they will pound the GOP candidates with their cowardly stance on these issues. It is a long term strategy, I believe.

  28. June 23, 2016 at 8:40 pm

About the Supreme Court decision with regards to immigration:

I hope that folks out there understand this.

    1. THIS is the reason that President Obama wanted Comprehensive Immigration Reform passed in Congress. He DOES NOT like to go the Executive Decision route. He would much rather prefer to it be settled IN LAW – not at the WHIMS of whomever occupies 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

    2. THIS is why you need a CONGRESS that will work. So, sniping at the President, or any other Democratic Member of Congress was a waste of time. The ones blocking Comprehensive Immigration Reform have ALWAYS been REPUBLICANS. Your protests and campouts should have been in Mitch McConnell’s and Orange Julius’ offices.

    3. Elections matter. For Congress and Senate – not just President.

    4. Do you see how directly impacted your life is BECAUSE OF THE SUPREME COURT?

WHY it matters who gets to choose the judges on the Supreme Court.

If you do not understand what the consequences of a President Trump – not only his existence, but who he would nominate to the Court…

    I’ve got nothing else…

To me, it’s spelled out, plain as day.

Folks need to be REGISTERED to vote.
Folks need to get OUT to vote.
Folks need to see the importance of voting for CONGRESS and SENATE.

What is Left Hand Enterprises and why did the Trump campaign pay it $730,000?
    June 23 at 2:30 PM

One of the top vendors to Donald Trump’s campaign is a company that formed in Delaware at the end of April.

On April 25, a new company called Left Hand Enterprises LLC was formed in Delaware, listing its address at an incorporation service provider in Wilmington.

A few days later, the firm received two big payments totaling $503,133 from Donald Trump’s presidential campaign to print and send a major shipment of direct mail. The campaign cut another $227,504 check to Left Hand Enterprises on May 2, new campaign finance filings show.

The rapid series of payments — $730,637 over five days — made Left Hand the 10th biggest vendor to the Trump campaign for the entire election cycle. But why it was hired, and what work it provided, remains a mystery even to some top Trump aides.

The campaign’s use of the mysterious pop-up firm has surfaced at a time of financial tumult for the Trump operation, which began June low on funds and has come under scrutiny for making large reimbursements to his companies.

Disappointed to hear a man in the orthopedic waiting room go on and on about politics to his small family group. He fit the Trump fan profile after he started talking. I would not have been able to have predicted it by his appearance and behavior before he got into the politics topic. It is somewhat scary to think there may be more Trump supporters than you would expect. When did selfishness become so prevalent?

On the positive side I finished my physical therapy today except for my take home PT plan. The doctor was positively surprised at my flex and extend ability of my replaced knee. Plus, I am now able to start back in small steps towards driving again. FREEDOM. Driving is such a big deal for independence. I hate depending on others.

My sister live in a complex for the elderly, and they all assume that she is a Trump supporter. Of course she is happy to set them straight. While IL Douche is calling HRC a crook and liar, looks like he is doing some shifty stuff himself. Doesn’t sound like someone who’s under audit would be making payments this large to a company formed suddenly then paid for “direct mail”? what state received “direct mailings” from DT? I wonder if any Rethug would come forward to say they NEVER received campaign mail from DT in the entire year.
