China has fitted the final piece on what will be the world’s largest radio telescope, due to begin operations in September, state media report.

The 500m-wide Aperture Spherical Telescope, or FAST, is the size of 30 football fields.

The $180m (ยฃ135m) satellite project will be used to explore space and help look for extraterrestrial life, Xinhua news agency reported.

Advancing China’s space program remains a key priority for Beijing.

    • July 4, 2016 at 9:29 am

I understand the Giant McGellan Telescope will collect more light than any telescope ever built and the resolution will be “the best ever achieved”. One among a group of the next gen of supergiants. Will look back to shortly after the Big Bang. Got delayed due to the global financial disaster (thankfully recovered by PBO).

Morning all. It’s gray and cloudy on this 4th in my area and rain is expected to drown all outdoor events later today. The good news is that I can’t do anymore outdoor home improvement or gardening projects and that is truly a holiday to be thankful for!
I always think of how hot it must have been in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, especially for men wrapped in layers of clothing with high boots and fancy knots at their throat. Their physical discomfort must have been only matched by their fear of the extraordinary and dangerous step they were taking in declaring independence from the great British empire. How surprised they would all be at what ‘Great Britain’ and its monarchy have become today!

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Independence Day than to put aside all thoughts, images and discussions of Donald Trump. He pollutes everything with his ugliness and venom and has no place in a day set aside to honor what is good and right about our country.

Our politics are in much disarray
“Even the most optimistic projections of the Coalition involve Malcolm Turnbull holding power by just a couple of seats. A situation in which party unity is simultaneously of maximum importance and minimum achievability. Ouch.”

The Brits have a report coming out on the lead in to the Iraq war & some want to impeach Tony Blair (hope they take Bush along for the ride)

And the UKIP leader has now resigned – seems that no-one wants to be in charge of taking the UK out of Europe

Trump could have kept his mouth shut while the media kept attacking Sec Clinton but he couldn’t stay away from the foot in mouth & dealt himself another negative blow.

Sometimes I think it is no wonder the RWNJs get elected (& a few LWNJs) – sane people run as far as possible away from the politics the 21st century has encouraged.

Happy Birthday USA and Malia Obama (you rock, young lady!).

Have a safe and happy 4th celebration to all TODers who celebrate the day.

Good morning, from Florida, to all of our International TODers.

John Adams: “…it ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.” Some of the people in my neighborhood have been doing the loudest part of the celebration since Friday.

Our family will be having a low country crab boil today, and one of the best things about this is that I need only walk down two doors to the feast.

Anyone know anything about Jamie Stiehm. She has a article about FLOTUS entitle “First Lady legacy is good, but hot great”. She sound like one of those feminists who seem to not be please with the things FLOTUS took on. Because FLOTUS is black she should have talk more about race.

    • 37 globalcitizenlinda
      July 4, 2016 at 10:55 am

ignore those people. they have never appreciated FLOTUS and what she does.

they have also never understood that FLOTUS’ approach to her job was to lift up the dreams and aspirations of a group of people that the main stream usually ignores.

they wanted her to shout the usual first lady slogans that push the status of the people who are not at the very bottom of society.

instead FLOTUS chose to focus on the forgotten marginalized and did it in a different way by trying to find actual solutions to actual pressing problems … not just sloganeering.

FLOTUS’ results are practical and will last long after she leaves the White House. As for slogans, they are eventually replaced by the slogans from a new first lady

Brilliant insightful analysis; thank you globalcitizenlinda. You have named the deep story of their sorry, cheap, smug commentaries. isn’t it the case that Cabinet Secretaries are supposed to be neutral … as long as they are in active service?

I could be wrong, but I thought that legally, they were not supposed to campaign

      • July 4, 2016 at 11:02 am

I know that’s true of SOS but I don’t think so because Castro has actively campaigned for HRC.

        July 5, 2016 at 8:43 am

Tom Perez and Julian Castro have already endorsed Hillary..

So this is the reason.. “But this year Obama’s chief of staff Denis McDonough wanted to “send a signal about the primacy of the Obama administrationโ€™s responsibility to manage the government and serve the American people,” said deputy White House press secretary Jennifer Friedman.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said it was an effort to “delineate” politics from the White House’s responsibilities.”

what a bunch of scumbags! first they play the role of leaders of the “Leave” campaign and now they scoot off, making sure that others clean up the mess they made of the country.

I wonder how those millions who listened to their bigoted garbage and voted “yes, Leave” feel now … they have been scammed big time by people who were only trying to fulfill their political ambitions.

If THIS isn’t offensive enough, there’s this:

U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson is seeking to prohibit Department of Justice officials from enforcing parts of the Americans with Disabilities Act at private voucher schools.

The amendment, which Johnson submitted to be included in the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriation Act that has yet to pass, prohibits DOJ from enforcing provisions of the ADA that ensure equal access to public education.

Johnsonโ€™s amendment says the provisions that protect students with disabilities from discrimination cannot be enforced in private voucher schools because the schools are not public, despite receiving public money in the form of a school voucher.

A spokeswoman for Johnsonโ€™s Senate office said the amendment is meant to protect voucher schools from a โ€œhostileโ€ attitude the Obama administration and other Democratic lawmakers have toward voucher programs and comes months after the Obama administration closed a probe into the Milwaukee voucher system after a lawsuit alleging discrimination against students with disabilities.

While Republicans saw fit to go home, and play games with funding…this goes on….

n one study, researchers from multiple institutions, including the Brazilian Ministry of Health, examined children who had been born to mothers with suspected Zika virus infections. The virus has been found to cause microcephaly, a birth defect characterized by an abnormally small head. However, researchers found of the approximately 1,500 births they studied, about 20 percent of the babies born with Zika virus had normal head circumferences. This means these infants may have developmental delays or other defects even though they do not have microcephaly.

The other study published by researchers from multiple institutions, including the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, examined the ways the virus affects brain tissue. They looked at brains of three infants who died after being born with Zika-related microcephaly and also at fetal tissue from two pregnancies that ended in miscarriage related to Zika infection.

Happy 4th to all of TODville! Especially our Ms Chips and wonderful NW.

I am sitting in the Reno airport waiting to go to SLC then home. Had a wonderful time with family! Was able to avoid all political talk, except my aunt loves Franklin Graham. I am very good at keeping my mouth shut.

Malia is 18. Time has so flown by for those girls. They are both such beautiful and mature young ladies so proud of them. Have a wonderful day Malia.

Hi Marilyn, Congrats on keeping your mouth shut. So hard to do sometimes, but necessary. I was just up in So Lake Tahoe where my daughter lives. If I’d known you were going to be that close by I would have driven up to see you. Let me know next time you will be in that area. Until then, safe travels.

It has become a tradition for us to have our female reunion there over the 4th. We will be there next year too. We stayed in SLake Tahoe last year. I’ll definitely be in touch the next time I go there.
