Prosecutions have to start putting these killers in prison. Only then will the police see it as real. Guess some have more faith in the goodness of LE than I do.

rethugs demand ‘independent prosecutors’ at the drop of a hat for anything and everything against dems. dems could learn something from them. the fuckers are relentless despite their failures.

I am a rarity; I am a 49-year-old black man that has survived being pulled over by the police. And every time one of them pulls up behind me I wonder if my luck as run out. Now you might think I’m being dramatic or hyperbolic, but there is a graveyard full of black men that say otherwise.

Racial animus; the great unfinished business of these United States. It is amazing that a small group of people who have no status and no power; who were brought here as cattle, not having the God-given right to own our very selves can be so hated. Why this genocide of people who have nothing and all laws and custom set up for this to remain true for more generations to come? Is it that the history that we carry in our very selves that show white people that their vision of themselves, this country is false and has always been so? I,s it a jealousy that no matter what lies have been told over the centuries in this country, the women are beautiful and lyrical and the men strong and masculine, the babies a miracle; all creative and invincible, making a way out of no way, and choosing to love despite all that is hurled against us (funny how the Black beauty that was long derided is something that every woman wants now: our curves, our plump lips, our gliding walk, our beautiful skin, our confidence and our style). It is part of the dark nature of humanity to destroy that which it cannot have. Black men are scandalized and talked about, but every time one tries to stand, he is met with lies, tricks and destruction. He is told to stand up, to be a man, but that is what those who are licensed to kill fear the most. I do not share any of the optimism that PBO has (or by now only says because he wants to be encouraging) that anything will change in a meaningful for many decades to come. The hate that we are showered with is irrational and cannot be reasoned away or legislated away. We continue to live in fear. I am thankful that I do not have any children of my own; my fear would suffocate them and me.
Thanks for the chance to say my peace. I am not angry, just sadly resigned. I speak as a 62 year old who has been raised, educated, and worked in the South all her life, who is also a member of a multi-racial family.

    • July 7, 2016 at 7:54 pm

I FEEL you CEB…but i cannot accept that things can or will not change…as PBO has said Progress is not inevitable…it has to be worked for….

Dr King was asked how can a law legislate hearts…his answer was that it may not change a heart but it can prevent a person from lynching him….

and so what we must do is change laws that allow a police contract to hinder accountability….and shield police…BLM…along with the PBO’s task force has come up with ways to attack this …as Matt Murphy from twitter said….Activism without voting is ineffective….Beyonce in her statement said the same….

We must vote out those who do not see police reform…as urgent….we must have a plan…and move forward with the plan….we can join with those folks who can “see” what is before their eyes….and fight for Justice….

Injustice anywhere is a treat against Justice every where…

      #YesWeCan!

this is what we must do….this is what we must do

The song from the musical Ragtime, “Make Them Hear You,” really resonates with this national tragedy; citizens being executed on the streets by those whose duty is to “serve and protect.” Check out either the original version by Brian Stokes Mitchell, or the one by Three Mo’ Tenors member Rodrick Dixon; both are powerful.

This video clip with Jane Elliott on Oprah is really worth watching. It’s less than 25 minutes and …… just watch it for yourselves. I think this particular clip will speak strongly to this community. Her commentary towards the end re love vs justice is certainly apropos.

    ps: {Dudette, I appreciate you bringing Elliott to my attention. I found her approach a bit harsh (bitchy) in the first ones you shared earlier, but still felt constrained to watch to the end. I later found a 5min clip in which she actually spoke about why the MLK assassination had such an impact on her.}

      Thanks VC!

I totally get why she took the brutal approach she did in the exercise though. In fact, I’m convinced part of why the exercise was so impactful is precisely because it shoved people out of their comfort zones. Very insightful woman. I admire her conviction & dedication to her mission.

Oh, I do get the brutal approach, but as a sensitive soul I have to admit that *I* could not have handled her approach (especially in the college setting). I’m a bit like the British guy in the adult session who said he played it very low key. [You should find the Oprah clip when she is almost in tears explaining how/why MLK’s murder was so impactful for her.]

UPDATED DEAR WHITE AMERICA – AN OPEN LETTER

    July 7, 2016
Dear United States, YOUR Police System and those who are not Black in America,

I came home today once again to tell my 13 year old black son about yet another death by the hands of the cops – another death of another black person. I could barely get the words out without crying but this couldn’t be sugar coated from him like I normally sweeten other information I feed him. So, let me tell you what a black single mother had to tell her son today or pretty much every time the need strikes, which is often. I had to tell my 13 year old young black son how to not get killed in these streets by those sent out to protect us.

The first thing is the reminder that although he has white friends, he needs to remember that: “You are not your white friends!!! If you are with them and you all get stopped by the cops for any reason know that you are not them, you cannot say what they say or act how they act. There is a high chance the police may single you out as the trouble maker whether you had anything to do with it so be prepared. Remember to keep your hands out of your pockets; if you are holding your phone drop it and put your hands up or out in front of you where they can be visibly seen free of anything by the cops. If they ask you any questions, answer them with a calm voice, NEVER yell. Tell them your name, age, address, mother’s name and phone number. Know that you are under the age of 16 which means you are not to be questioned without a legal guardian so with that knowledge, give them your mother’s name and phone number again. If they feel the need to pat you down, assume the position I’ve taught you and let them pat you down but be quiet while doing so. Once they have met their goal of whatever the hell it was, if you are not arrested you wait until they have left the area completely then call me. If they arrest you, put your hands up in the air to signal your surrender then let them guide your hands into the cuffs and put you into the police car. You are to remain silent the entire ride to the station – don’t even be angry because there is no need for it especially if you are innocent. Once in the station you give them your mother’s name and number again and inform them that at your age you cannot be questioned without a guardian and/or legal representation. No matter what lies they fill your head with to scare you, know that none of their lies are above the law and the law is what I’ve taught you so do not fear their lies instead give them your mother’s name and phone number again and tell them that once a guardian is present you will answer any and all questions.

After I drill that process into his head we go over him not trying to be a hero when it comes to his other black friends.

    …………………………………………………………………………………………………

Today I showed him the murder of Alton Sterling. Why? Because I normally hide these images and things from him, I only tell him what happens because we do not watch the news or have regular TV access, we only stream but today I needed him to see what I’ve been telling him about for once so that he truly understands that the rules I lay upon him are not to scare him but to protect him from being an Alton Sterling, or a Tamir Rice; a young boy whose death haunts me every time I think about him. He knows that these things may never come his way but if they do, he is prepared.

Hi TOD community, I want to offer a link to an article posted on Colorlines.com titled “4 Self-Care Resources for Days When the World is Terrible” (http://www.colorlines.com/articles/4-self-care-resources-days-when-world-terrible). I am traumatized by these videos and cannot watch them. Since news outlets play these images of murder over and over that pretty much means I don’t watch the news for a few days. Lawrence O’Donnell’s show — one of the few MSNBC shows I watch — is one of the worst at this. He and his panel will talk for ten minutes with a murder video on a continuous loop with no sense of how traumatic this is for children and adults. So I offer this link on self-care. I really appreciate everyone working to maintain this site. It is a source of information and comfort. Bless you.

  51. July 7, 2016 at 10:08 pm

I believe Facebook saved the lives of Philando Castile’s girlfriend and child.

I honestly believe her going live saved their lives.

I was very worried for her safety when they cuffed her and brought her to the police station. I was worried she’d be found dead like Sandra Bland. I suspect you are right.
